Update 3 for vmware Infrastructure 3 is a comprehensive update?

Is update 3 for vmware Infrastructure 3, a comprehensive update or should I install the update 1 and day 2 first?

I believe that if you apply the update 3 with the Update Manager and then rescan with your baseline, you will see fewer missing updates.  It should take care of all update 1 and day 2 patches.  If you want to apply update 3 make sure to run all of the patches that have been released since then as well, there are a few recent bugfixes of update 3.

If all goes well with this number of hosts you can eliminate the time instead of reduce, if you have the DRS in fully automatic mode when you use the Manager to update to migrate the guests off the coast to other hosts for you while patch.

  • Which TCP port is used for VMWare Infrastructure Client?

Hello, my ESXi server sits on the private network, and I'm trying to PAT so that I can access the external network using VMWare Infrastructure Client Server. Does anyone know what port is VMWare Infrastructure Client listen? Thank you.

    Priscilla

Do the external network for VMware NAT

I guess you mean that your server is located in the internal network and Client is on the outside.

If the customer does not have to "listen" for connections it opens TCP ports - HI 1024-65535 to servers as follows.

Servers (including GSX) TCP ports: 8222, 8333, 902

If you have ESX (i) then TCP ports: 80, 443, 902

  • Local host for VMware Infrastructure Client permissions

We normally use vcenter 2.5 and ESX 3.5. Our user permissions are set on vcenter, using Active Directory.

However when vcenter is out of service, we can connect locally to each esx host using the VMware Infrastructure client. Logging as root works very well. However, we have several local nonroot accounts defined on the ESX host.

How can we give users permission to open a session? We want to be administrators on the graphical interface, but does not give the root password.

As root, you will need to identify yourself with the VI Client and assign permissions to non-root users to access environment - but caution that you do not have the granularity of permissions, as you do with VC and if these hosts are managed by CR you do not want to make changes to them directly as this may affest DRS and HA-

  • Y at - it an update for VMware ESX 4.1 update 1?

    Dear friends;

I heard that VMware releases update for VMware ESX 4.1 update 1. Could you please tell me if this is correct?

And would you please reference me this article?

ESX will not available in vSphere 5.0. It will be always supported in the same way that VI 3.5 is still supported, however. Here's an official blog stating that ESX 4.1 is the latest major version of ESX.

With the release of VMware vSphere 4.1, we announced that 4.1 will be the last version of vSphere to support the ESX and ESXi hypervisor architectures.

  • using the converter no option for "Type of Destination." I am allowed only 'VMware Infrastructure virtual machine'

Hi, I am looking to convert my localhost Ubuntu 9.10 for a machine virtual (vmdk) using vCenter Converter Standalone Client 4.0.1.

I am at the step #2 (specify the Destination) and I expect to converter to allow me to choose a path to store the hard files.  However, 'Destination Type' does not have any selection - only 'VMWare Infrastructure virtual machine' is available.  (also there is input to the server, username, and password fields)

    What I am doing wrong?

    Thank you

    Hello

using vmware converter 4.01 when virtual do physical power machines Linux the only available destination is ESX (i) server.

One possible way to solve this handicap can be what makes an image of the Linux system using one of support for the products of the image and then use the vmware converter to set up the image of Linux box as a source and destination that it doesn't have to be a server ESX (i)

If it comes to an eventual conversion, you can use a trial license with the product of the image (e.g. acronis true image or norton ghost).

    Best wishes / Saludos.

  • not getting does not clone/update with VMware Infrastructure client option

Hi we have an esx3.5 with VIM 2.5

to authorize the server through a host file, that we had to create a virtual machine on the esx server and install VIM 2.5 above, pointing licensing to the ip address of this server. This vm is winXP so everything works fine.

When we try to connect to the ip address of the winVista esx server, we get a Manager, without options - clone/updates

Therefore, in order to make any kind of cloning or updates remotely of machines WinVista you must:

create a VPN connection on the site with the esx server,

Connect to the ip address of the esx server,

    Open the VMware Infrastructure client,

    opening of session

Open the console of the computer that has installed VIM 2.5

and perform a cloning from inside the virtual Windows XP machine

as you can see it's pretty heavy. is there another way?

    Thank you!

Because if I understand your message, you don't see the "Clone/Update" option in the menu when you connect thru customer VI ESX Server. Yes, this isn't. ESX does not provide the functionality without VirtualCenter. Then, must use VirtualCenter, address IP/Hostname in the VI Client to accomplished these tasks.

  • Alternative to VMware Infrastructure Web Access?

I had absolutely horrible experience, try using the VMware Infrastructure Web Access site to manage my VMware Server 2 (2.0.0 - 2.0.2), but I spare you the rant about the problems.  In short, I expect more distributed as alpha software.

Is there another program of VMware or someone else who will allow me to manage VMware Server and access the console of the virtual machine.  I liked the product for Server 1.x, but unfortunately, they removed support.

Yes, he must be the customer of ESX3.5.  Specifically Virtual Infrastructure Client 2.5.  I do not know which build ESX3.5 I got the customer, but it was there are a few updates.  So, you might try the extraction of the ESX3.5u1 or u2, if the current version of u5 does not work.

A major limitation with the VIClient is that it cannot completely handle material type 7 VMs.  (e.g.: Server2.)  You can start the virtual and other computers, but cannot change the settings of the virtual machine.  If the virtual machines are the older type 4 (e.g.: Server1) then you can make full use of the VIClient for everything.  However, the type 4 does not support USB2.  You don't have to have all your virtual machines as type 4.  My server has a mixture of types, but I have to remember which are of type 7 and use the web interface to modify the virtual machine settings.  But apart from that, I use the VIClient to display the console for all virtual machines.

If you can live with the older hardware type, the VIClient is absolutely the best way to manage the Server2.

  • VMware infrastructure management - time necessary to do the job? Tips and advice needed please.

guys / girls - some notice on the amount of work required to maintain and develop a VMware Infrastructure setup as follows:

9 blades (BL 465 & 685) HP connected to an EVA 8000 (double fabric connected)

Set up 2 separate HA /DRS Clusters running ESX 3.5 Update 3

130 virtual machines, mainly under windows 2003 (backup VCB full every night)

How many hours per week would you say, in your experience, should maintain, troubleshoot and develop (stay up to date with patches, etc.), critical infrastructure of this size in an enterprise environment with 2,500 users (IE if something goes wrong then there will be serious questions asked). The job would mean ensuring full availability etc. and a capacity of DR.

Be as conservative as you like, duties include looking after the equipment, and (with HP support relevant contracts), could understand you short if possible reasoning. The turnover of virtual machines is about 2 per week.

    Hello

last part of the puzzle is man how many hours per week would you must employ a person to perform the infrastructure once implemented. (ie. verification of backups, torubleshooting of performance issues, the provisioning maybe some new virtual machines per week, now patch levels and take care of the equipment, etc..)

For this size environment, I would have a virtualization full-time administrator who works closely with your storage, network, server and application teams to solve problems. Almost everything from the beginning will be considered a problem of virtualization. You need a good plan on how to handle this. You will need a team made up of members of other teams to manage all possible problems.

Again be as conservative as you want. I'll assign the points after this bit.

I probably aim for at least 2 people for full redundancy. The work does not stop when you're on vacation.

3-9 guests can be easily managed by a single person, but we're going to do a bit of math...

    150 VMS to start...

Let's say you need to VMotion all 150 VMs... Say 30 seconds per VM, if 150 * 30 = 1.25 hours = average 2.5 hours of interruption, etc..

Let's say you need to SVMotion all 150 VMs... 1 GB/s with an average 24 GB per VM so 3 working day in SVMotion tell everything... Closer to 1 week. Its a drive problem.

    Now add both to:

    Debugging problems of enforcement...

    Debugging problems of storage...

    Debugging network problems...

    Guest operating system problems debugging...

    Debugging problems ESX...

    Debugging performance issues...

    And the time to add:

    Reports required by management...

    Duration of training...

    New implementation time VM...

    Nerw material planning...

    DR testing and planning...

    etc etc.

It is at least 1 person complete if not 2.

  • "The session is not authenticated" when you try to convert it to VMWare Infrastructure Server computer machine

The image was a Linux P2V conversion... I didn't have my ESXi server on the same network, so I just used the Converter 3.0.3 Startup disk to create my virtual image (RHEL 4), and now I'm trying to use the 4 converter to convert the image from the server to the ESXi server.  When I do a "convert", I select 'VMware Workstation or another VMware virtual machine', browse my virtual machine's .vmx file.  In the next screen, I select "Virtual Machine of VMware Infrastructure" in the menu drop down and put my server, including the password information in the boxes below.  I click Next and that works fine, it connects.  From there on, I leave all the default settings and click Next... immedietely at the top of the window, I get "the session is not authenticated.   I did not find anything about it either with the search function, apologize me if I missed something.  Someone else encountered this?

This happened to me when the time updated Inbox ESXi causing a shift in the session information on the host computer, which I was trying to convert.

The fix was to bounce the agent converter on the server you are trying to convert.  For me all right.

  • Sizing of VMware Infrastructure

If you are going to build a VMware infrastructure, consider yourself the hyperthreading the processor function in order to have several virtual machines per server.

    Example:

    carrots 2 x 10 = 20 hearts (Physics)

    40 carrots (with hyperthreaading)

I guess that 75% will be used for virtual machines and 1 vCPU per VM

    1-15 virtual machines for physics

    2 30 VMs with hyperthreading

which is the best architecture, based on the physical cores or it is safe to use the feature hyperthreading for VM deployment.

Finally, if I use the physical cores, is it safe I guess 1 physical core = 4 vCPU?

    Thank you!

You must not consider hyper-threading, you still share the physical heart.  Here is a good article about the sizing and hyper-threading Gotcha Hyper-Threading with Machine vCPU virtual sizing - Wahl network

    It's safe I guess 1 physical core = 4 vCPU?

You should never assume anything in a design unless support can be posted in the event of oversubscription, you must confirm that your workload won't suffer degradation performance if the CPU use increases.  You really need to understand the workload and usage patterns.

  • Assign 1 NIC purely for VMWare Workstation

    Hi all

I recently gave me a Z1 HP Workstation PC for my office.

It is an integrated wireless and wired connections.

What I would do, is use the wireless purely for VMware workstation 7 and connect it to our test card WLAN to provide connectivity to the outside (for the windows updates, etc.).

Then use the wired connection, to connect to the domain network.

Anyone know if this is possible? I can't find much info about him.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you.

Good then you have to try to work around the problem.

The host WiFi network adapter, let all IP6 verified but protocols and then manually set the IP4 address to a 169.254.x.x address while retaining the good mask subnet, default gateway, and DNS for the LAN router.  It comes in a way that is known to work however, it is still dependent on how the wifi adapter and the WiFi router manages normal communications.  If it works, what it does is to allow the virtual machine is to use the VMware bridge Protocol but the 169.254.x.x address stops the host itself to use.  Other normal settings for good subnet mask, default gateway and DNS servers for the LAN router has been know to turn on the bypass, which will take place on a WiFi network card and or WiFi routers.  In some cases, make what you want may have to be done via wired Ethernet, if a WiFi solution cannot be implemented.

If it does not we know as there may be other things to try with the WiFi before you have to implement a wired Ethernet solution.
