  If you are still having this problem here is a few things to look at.

  The first thing are to check the error code you listed above.  It is a figure of short and I wasn't able to find anything with this code.  Go to Windows Update and select "view history update" and then double-click on one update has failed, which will give you the error code.  Then you can find an error code if you want to get information on this subject.

  Make sure your firewall is disabled when you run the windows update.  Let us know what virus program you use.  Have you updated your antivirus program lately?

  Error code Win 7 643 for update for Microsoft XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2 for x 64 systems (KB973688). Must have tried 10 times at least. All I get is the error code and it can not install XML based Services. Have you tried system restore, but that did not help at all.  If anyone has a solution please let me know. Also how can I remove the extra cannot be installed in "Update history".  One thing it says XML Core Services 4.0 Service Pack 2.  I do not have the Service Pack 1?

  If you can't answer YES to all three of these conditions, you don't need to install KB973688 and steps #1-#4 in my second reply to this topic should prevent Windows Update from the offer.
