Update Ultra-DMA to SATA-2

Hello

I have a case of HP Pavilion A210.no 4 year with a 120 GB Hard Drive Part # 6Y120L0 Maxtor DiamondMax Plus 9.

XP SP2 is installed.

The specifications of the motherboard is http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00063027

The system displays a S.M.A.R.T. failure at startup, and the drive is grinding and evil. I want to replace the drive.

I have another drive that I would like to install Maxtor as a replacement for the disk.

It is a Samsung Spinnpoint T166 320 SATA2 7200 RPM 16MB with Windows 7 pre-installed.

What changes to I need to bring to my PC to install the Samsung SATA 2 drive?

I read in this forum about the StarTech adapter Converter: http://www.compusa.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=5337111&CatId=468

Is this all I need?

Hello jbrattis, I read some good reviews on these adapters and some not very good comments. I've never used one of these adapers.

There are also some addon PCI Sata cards that may be installed in one of the three ports PCI on the motherboard. I used some of them in the past and they worked well. These cost slightly more than the adapter that you linked.

At this price, you would not take much more than a glance if the adapter has not been run as it should.

You also need an adapter to connect the connector white molex that your current system has, on the Sata power connector that would be necessary to connect to the Sata hard drive.

You should also be aware that since you mentioned the Sata hard disk has already installed on the hard drive Windows 7, you'd probably have very many problems with this configuration, and the system cannot even boot.

This could be because the drivers for your motherboard and devices are probably not taken in charge for Windows 7.

You should consider a new installation of Windows 7 and then install the necessary drivers for your system.

Device drivers for your system, available with Windows XP can be a little hard to find, but most of them can be.

I would suggest finding the network card drivers for your NIC supported for Windows 7, so you can at least get on the Internet and to try and locate additional drivers for your system.

Just some thoughts.

  • Ultra-DMA 66 on Tecra M5?

    Hello

Some software of tewaking is an option to enable Ultra-DMA 66 on shipset intel. Ultra-DMA I know reduces the CPU usage when you access the HD. This usually means a more responsive OS. It is always a setting that I don't want to mess with unless I'm 100% sure, that it will not mess with my system. I remember in the last of the problems with the desktops and Ultra - DMA.Probably because wilt HD ot the chipset controller couldn't take it.

So my question is... done Tecra M5 (51st version) supports Ultra DMA66... and it's a good idea to enable it in windows xp?

    Thanks in advance.

    see you soon

Seems that you are not allowed

UDMA-> court for access to the memory of Ultra-Direct
It is a protocol for a standard ATA and it controls the speed of data transfer between a drive HARD ATA (IDE) and the controller of the motherboard!

As you say than UDMA and DMA to transfer data from the HARD drive to RAM by using the DMA controller on the CPU.

But please don't compare any old desktop computer with mobile technology. Tecra M5 is a mobile generation. Tecra M5 supports SATA HDD! Holders of host controller Serial ATA (SATA) integrated (2 profits, 150 MB/S)

AND the integrated IDE controller supports Ultra ATA 100/66/33.

    To return to your question;
Tecra M5 uses U-DMA66 and faster! You can use hard disks that support U-DMA100

I hope that I was clear enough

    Hello

I suggest to reset the default settings to default and check for the issue.

You may also contact the manufacturer of your BIOS to change these settings.

Important note: Change (CMOS) BIOS/complementary metal oxide semiconductor settings can cause serious problems that may prevent your computer from starting properly. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the configuration of the BIOS/CMOS settings can be solved. Changes to settings are at your own risk.

  • Satellite A100: How do I enable SATA NATIVE mode

Hello, my laptop Satellite A100 PSAA9 and the southbridge is an ICH7M
I put an SSD in my laptop and the drive controller is locked-> Ultra DMA 6 IDE compatible mode.
I would switch to the native SATA-1 to increase the bandwidth (from 110 MB/s-150), but I can't find any setting so that, in the last BIOS 6.00

I think that maybe in the past, Toshiba has enable this feature, but I suppose they might have turned it off for beginners who don't know how to install the SATA drivers during the installation of Windows.

I found Toshiba BIOS database, but it is locked by a password.
I'm willing to test any BIOS that could re - enable native SATA mode

+ The message was edited: link has been removed - unauthorized +.

    Hello

You need the native SATA controller?

The laptop was equipped with a controller SATA interface supports the Serial ATA Rev. 1. 0a.

Some laptop models take a BIOS that contains a SATA mode option.
This option can be changed on AHCI or in compatibility mode.

But as far as I know a100 BIOS does not contain these settings

  • Re: Satellite A300 GN1 hhd PIO mode by default... problem need to DMA

Hello I have a problem with Ide channel. I reinstalled Vista to xp, in the bios sata option is set to "compatibility" and I can't change hhd to ultra DMA... Here is the photo http://img386.imageshack.us/my.php?image=65634705sv6.jpg
my pc is running very slowly... maybe someone knows how to change pio to DMA mod?

    Sorry for the bad English

Wait a minute: you use Vista and Windows XP Home edition or you installed Vista only? I didn't understand exactly what you wrote.

If you are using Vista just go to BIOS settings and set SATA controller in AHCI mode. After restarting Vista several AHCI drivers will be installed and Vista work well will win.
If you use two operating systems, it can be problematic, because you can not set on AHCI back. You will get the blue screen after each start up Windows XP Home edition.

  • Update hard disc on Satellite L20

    Hi all

I would like to change the hard drive of my Satellite L20-260...
I installed a hard MK4026GAX drive, I would like to replace it with a bigger... by taking a peek on the internet I found hard drives as MK8032GAX...

Yes, 80 is the size (80 GB) but 32 what means? Can someone tell me is this hard disk can replace my old (one broken too) a?

    Hello

I put t knows what means the 32 at the end of the number, but the disk HARD of MK8032GAX supports Ultra DMA/100 (ATA-6) interface.

To my knowledge the Satellite L20 260 supports serial ATA (SATA) interface.
You must use the s HARD drive that supports this and don t buy HARD drive that supports IDE interface because you will not be able to connect it to the laptop.

In addition, the compatibility of the BIOS is very important. In many cases, the BIOS cannot recognize the HARD drive because of the large size.
According to your post, the laptop supports 40 GB HDD s. In my opinion the 80 GB should work and should be recognized.

I recommend to visit the merchant of HARD drive in your area and ask for compatible HARD disk. Maybe you would be able to test it in the shop.

  • Sat. 1400-503, SD-R2102 drive: IDE ERROR #1, cont.

    Hello.
Therefore, even after the firmware update (1400-503 drive, SAT SD-R2102). Original firmware was 1316, after changing to 1W16, an error message is displayed. The firmware update program cannot return to the previous state, bcs is displaying the message: not found disk ATAPI. Can anyone help?

    Hello

    Just for Info:

The first two letters are important... They represent 'the family' as 10XX, 13XX and 17XX are Toshiba original firmware. 1QXX are Compaq. 1DXX are Dell and so on...

Finally, two are actually version. The more means more new version. But they are the exceptions a...

You should never Flash your drive with the firmware of different 'family '. By example, if your firmware is currently 1015 should never flash at 1 Q 24 since your disk may not work more after the blink...

    Good bye

  • Satellite Pro L300: BSOD after updating BIOS

    Hello

After updating the Bios of the Satellite Pro L300, windows will not start!
His show the blue screen of death!

    What can I do?

    Hello

You are able to access the BIOS settings?
I m not very well why this BSOD appears, but eventually the SATA mode settings have been changed after the BIOS update

Usually the SATA mode must be on AHCI if the SATA drivers are installed.
But if the SATA drivers are not included the SATA mode must be set to compatible.

    Please check this!

In addition, you could set the BIOS default settings and may try to start the computer again.

  • Aspire One 722 just took out of box will not connect to windows update.

I have 2 identical Aspire One notebooks 722 running AMD chipsets running Windows 7sp1 pro.                              (SNID [redacted to comply with guidelines]) that does not connect to update the window. I have the built-in System Restore on a single noteboook to see if that would fix it. It there no. This is the news, I had them on the Board for the protection of labour. I tried for a month now to get Microsoft updates to work.

I tried all the fixes and the tools I find on the net and within Microsoft to get updated to work and have had no sucsses.

I even went as far as buying a new hard drive and a new copy of Microsoft windows 7sp1 drive still does not work.

Everything elese works fine I can join any network at work. Surf the web, download electronic music or programs. No problem at all with the part of it. I get no error message or it is just to update program and the bar just moves a day if I let him. I do it all the patches from microsoft, they say that all is well, or fixed and still nothing.

Think it's strange that a new disc of win7sp1 with a new HD it still does not work. I'm at my wits end.

Anyone out there have the magic bullet miss me?

Sure could use some help on this. No I won't update to WIndows 10 and forget about it. Ha ha

Well @ 12:10 CST, I learned that I had 205 updates installed plus 5 in option.

So it is now was the installation of updates since then.

So, it does not. In the review I, that I did not did nothing before.

This time, I did a clean installation of the operating system. Installed all the latest drivers. A through the online activation.

Click updates in short order says something about downloading a new engine update. Screen went white and Brown a few times. Back to update sceeen were he sat running for approximently 12 + hours. Then, the notification of the necessary updates. And now it's @ 65 of 209 updates (installation)

When this is done, I will do the same to the other laptop and hoping for the same results.

Thanks to everyone who gave me advice here. It was great to have you share your knowledge and your encougment.

  • Connection USB Z2 Xperia is not detected (after trying to update Lollipop)

    Hello world:

I get in most of the topics here, including (USB connection problem FAQ), but not found an answer to my problem. Find the post suggestions when you type the message topic a little clever novelty...

Well, I was happy to receive my mail yesterday regarding my availability of update available Lollipop Z2. SAT, open PC Companion on my Windows 7 laptop, make a backup of the settings (without photos or apps) and then to receive the update.

PC companion asked me to keep the phone unplugged, and that it would notify when connect me (Nice also)...

I started the download, but apparently the laptop came into fashion 'sleep' (not plugged into the wall), which was another reason for not having the phone connected (because of Z2 battery drain charge up to 100%)

The rest is blurry, but when I woke up the laptop, it stopped downloading at 51% and extending the.

A method to restart the laptop, but when I tried to connect the phone... nothing. Well, he is never detected by the laptop. Wireless Media Transfer option was still working, but it would not download the update (as if the USB connection is required). Tried to install it on another PC (with administrator privileges) and no go.

Never started phone update... works perfectly with this exception. PSG, MSC, USB debugging, nothing works). Helium does not work. Nothing!

I'm kind of crazy, since the update of the pacifier is not destructive (no fading phone data), but it seems that I will probably need to reset the phone.

    Help, please

Well, it seems that the problem is intermittent, as the PC has detected the phone and I was able to update to the pacifier. So.will hardware problem complete RMA. THANKS for all THOSE who have planted in. Please close thread.

  • No option AHCI in the BIOS. DVD SATA as IDE burner.

Hello, I am new to the forum and need advice, else why would I be here, no?

I have a desktop HP Pavilion a610n with the AMD Athlon 3000 + CPU. I upgraded from XP to Windows 7 Home Premium. I borrowed an IDE DVD drive to install the new system because the original HP drive stopped working.

After installation, I bought a new 24 X Multiformat DVD Writer (DVD 1270i HP) and connected on one of two SATA connectors on the motherboard (since both tried) and bought an adapter for the power supply connection (4-pin Molex to 15-pin SATA). Start the computer and the device has been installed and all seemed well until I put an audio CD in the drive and it just sat there with the ridiculous small icon rolling around. I tried a DVD in there then and it froze the computer.

I then went in the implementation to see if there was an option to switch from IDE to SATA AHCI, but there isn't. In the Device Manager DVD appears as an IDE drive I think I need some sort of update BIOS to enable SATA support. HP support has no new BIOS download for this computer on their download page. Only XP is listed as an operating system.  My only option is to return the drive and get an IDE model?

Sorry for the novel, but I tried to give a complete description of my attempts at resolution. Thanks for any advice you can give!

    Kernal Klink

    Kernal, welcome to the forum.

I checked the specifications of the product for an update of the BIOS. There is an update of the BIOS, but it is only for XP Home Media Center. The BIOS is dated 25/08/2005. It wouldn't fix all problems you encounter at this stage. You can try to reinstall XP and do the BIOS update, but as I said, it does not seem to fix all your problems.

I think that I return the drive and save your money for a new computer. You have nothing to lose and much to gain.
