Update Windows wants to install KB973346 daily

Greetings!

I - and many of my colleagues - are being invited by the automatic update to install the fix KB973346 daily.  We are all running Windows XP SP3 and are also updated on all our patches.  Is there a way to stop reminders to install the patch already installed, or should live us with it until the next Patch Tuesday?

I tried the following remedies, and each one failed in one way or another:

Run the Microsoft Fix It utility to reset the Windows Update components in aggressive mode (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058) and default - shield yellow still appears in the system tray.

Restart the AutoUpdate service in Control Panel administrative tools - computer management - yellow shield still appears in the system tray.

Rename the C\WINDOWS\system32\catroot2 folder to shield catroot2.old - yellow reappears in the system tray.

Uninstall the KB973346 hotfix by using Add or remove programs Panel - after you have reinstalled the patch, yellow shield reappears in the system tray invites me to install it again.

Installation of the redistributable KB973346 hotfix installer (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=24701af8-b87e-4e85-9463-f50755a1b6ad&displaylang=en) in normal mode and Mode safe, boots - a reading error "Setup error: the system cannot find the specified file" appears, and the installation fails.

Are there other strategies I miss to correctly install this hotfix and will not be prompted to install again once it has been installed?

Augustine,

This info help if Jeff used VISTA, but it uses XP.

  • Update Windows wants to install an older driver from Nvidia

My Dell has a driver Nvidia as of 20/11/09 (date of the driver, not the installation of the driver - Driver Version 8.17.11.9562), and Windows Update keeps insisting that I should install an "option" upgrade for a driver from Nvidia which is older, as of September 2007, published 12/12/08.  How is that possible?  How can I let Microsoft know that there must be something wrong with their recommendation of update?

    Hello

Unfortunately updates Windows is often older drivers certified. So the best method is to stop
the automatic update of the drivers while leaving the other updates in automatic mode. Then since updated
drivers can be very important in a mature OS response that must be updated manually. New
computers are provided with pilots of early stage so they really need to be updated quite often especially
When there are major changes in the pilot platform, which is valid for both Vista and Windows 7.

Part of the problem is from the platform changed pilot and there's a maturation process Microsoft
is too overwhelmed with updates from the pilot to the certification process. Thus, at the time where a driver
certification passes a manufacturer probably has published several major updates to this one. Here now
in 32 and 64 bit platforms just adds to the load of the certification.

If you run Windows Update it is not a virus. However, if you try and update certificates through third party sites there's a chance it could infect your computer.

  • Windows Update keeps wanting to install "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP (KB2618444).

Windows Update keeps wanting to install "Cumulative Security Update for Internet Explorer 8 for Windows XP (KB2618444)", even if it appears in the list of updates to inistalled in the control panel.  The installation fails.  When I use "Fix it", it indicates that default Windows update data locations have changed, but I can't 'Fix It' to do the repair.  In what could be a related issue, Windows Data Execution Prevention (part of IE 8?) detects a malfunctioning or malicious add-on, whenever I try to access a video on ESPN3 and closes the Web page.  However, 'Fix It' can not detect any problems with the modules.  I don't know what else to try to fix any of these problems.

    Hello

Were you able to install some other updates?

I suggest you perform the clean boot and install it manually.

  • Windows wants to install 6 updates every time that I log out or put the computer in mode "Eve"

I can't stop or have food options on.  I expect the updates to install.  It is said that they have installed and the next time I start there they are.

    Hi Happygrammy,

Welcome to the Windows Vista answers Forum!

This could happen if the update that you are trying to install are damaged during the process. To prevent this all the time you need to maybe uninstall the updates, and install them one at a time.

To do this, you will need to make a list updates that are the cause of the problem, then go to install update history and uninstall them manually. Then download these updates and install them in clean boot mode.

To help resolve the error and other messages, you can start Windows Vista by using a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. This type of boot is known as a "clean boot". A clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.

Steps to put the system in clean boot include:

1 log on to the computer using an account with administrator rights

    2. click on start, type msconfig.exe in the start search box and press ENTER to start the System Configuration utility.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click on continue

    3. on the general tab, click Selective startup, and then clear the check box load startup items. (The check box use the file Boot is not available.)

    4. on the Services tab, click to select the skin all the Microsoft services check box, and then click Disable all

Note: Following this step lets services Microsoft continue to run. These services include networking, Plug-and-Play, record of events, error reporting, and other services. If you disable these services, you can permanently delete all restore points. Do not do this if you want to use with existing restore points system restore utility

For more information about the clean boot, follow the below given link:

How to troubleshoot a problem by performing a clean boot in Windows Vista or in Windows 7

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929135

When you are finished troubleshooting, follow these steps to reset the computer to start as usual:

    1. click on start, type msconfig.exe in the start search box and press ENTER.

If you are prompted for an administrator password or for confirmation, type your password, or click on continue.

    2. on the general tab, click the Normal startup option, and then click OK.

    3. When you are prompted to restart the computer, click on restart

You will need to maybe reset the Windows Update components, download the Microsoft fix - it from the link and run the wizard that automatically resets the windows update components, if it does not, I recommend that reset you manually update windows components from the link: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

These steps should solve the problem, give it a try and check if you are able to perform windows updates.

    Hope this information is useful.

  • Error code: Trying 80072F8F update windows after fresh install - Dell Vostro 1510 - (Windows 7 x 64 PRO)

Hello, I'm trying to update windows after installation and I get error code 80072F8F.  After looking for other pages, I checked my BIOS date and time are correct and Windows as well.

    Laptop: Dell VOSTRO 1510
    Windows 7 x 64 PRO

I already activated Windows (silly me to check everything actually works) and I need a solution as soon as POSSIBLE.

I needed Windows update to try and fix a number display adapter (card intel not giving not external display resolutions)- but that's another question.

I hope that there is a fix out there somewhere in the ether.

No anti-virus installed at the present time, no anti-spyware, no firewall.

Repost: What were the problems you are experiencing that you thought that a "new facility" could solve?

The foregoing notwithstanding, and since you neglected to install an antivirus application...

Personal data backup (which none should be considered 100% reliable at this point) then format the HARD disk and do a clean install of Windows.  Please note that a repair installation (upgrade AKA on-site) won't fix this!

I have read many topics and I can't seem to find the same problem I have.  I use Windows VISTA Home Premium (32 bit) for awhile and since June 30, 2009, I had bad download and install Windows updates.  I installed updates today, but I continue to be invited to run/install updates for Office XP and Office 2002 (currently about 9).  I used VISTA and Office 2007 for some time.  I believe that I have IE 7 and SP2.  I appreciate any help I can get to fix this.  Thanks in advance for your help.

    Hello SKYisDlimit,

After my communication to you, I continued to the Internet using the search.  I was finally able to locate the file you suggested (Msmapi\1033) he successfully Office Pro 2003 Outlook running.  Thank you!!

I don't know if you're alone in asking the question following or not, but I'm still able to re - install Microsoft Office Professional 2007.  I uninstalled after information I received of Santosh, and it has the re - install Office Pro 2003 (which have been upgraded).  Now when I try to reinstall 2007 (bought in February 2007), I keep getting the following message: "Setup is unable to find a version of Microsoft Office on your computer.  If Office is installed on a disk or a network share, click the buttun browse to select the appropriate disk or sharing.  If you have a version of MB on a CD, insert the CD into your CD-ROM drive, and then click the Browse button to select the appropriate drive. »

I tried several times without success.  Of course, I use Office 2003 Pro, so it's on the computer.  If you are unable to solve this problem, please either direct to the appropriate area or tell me who I need to contact.  Once again, thank you in advance for your help.  Needless to say, it's more frustrating!

  • How to update Windows after re-installing Vista 32 bit.

I reinstalled Vista Home Premium 32-bit on my Dell E521 and 105 recommended updates to consider.  Should I install all and hope for the best, or is there a better way to ensure that only the most recent updates are included?  Tips appreciated.

    Thank you

    Terry

You have need of all updates and service packs in the order.  Windows Update allows you to identify the first list and install all of them.  Then run it again before appear no more.  And then install SP1 if it did not appear as an update, then repeat the process.  Then install SP2 and repeat the process.  You will be so up-to-date.  You can't just install new updates - you need in such order as presented by Windows Update.

    I hope this helps.
