updated images of VMware Server to use in ESXI server

Hello

I just have a lot of virtual machines that has been configured and used by vmware server 1. Now, I'll use ESXI server, when I downloaded the images to the esxi server and tried to run, I had a mistake in VMDK. Is it possible for me to change VMDK and use these old images or I need to reconstruct images from scracth. also, is there any availbale tool to update my old images to use ESXI?

Thank you

ESXi does not support the scattered disk format used by VMware Server by default. What you can do is to follow the recommendations of weinstein5and use VMware Converter or convert the hard file in a supported format (zeroedthick, eagerzeroedthick or thin) using the vmkfstools in ESXi command line tool.

Assuming that the virtual disk has no snapshots, you can follow these steps in order to maintain the virtual disk file name.

  • create a 'old' subfolder in the folder of the VM on the ESXi host and move the hard files in this folder
  • Basic virtual machine folder run for example vmksftools old-i /hard-d thin vmname.vmdk
  • If the virtual machine lights without problem, you can remove the "old" subdirectory

    Hello, my saver

Currently, I have an Esxi, but before I used a picture of WMware player to my virtual server and I know, I use Vsphere to work with my 5.1 ESsxi, I just want to know if I can use my VMware Player image in VSphere for Esxi? and if the answer is Yes, how?

    Thanks for your help.

Right, so use VMware converter to do this as indicated in my previous post.

  • VMware Server Proliant 385 + Win2008R2?

Then, they gave me a depreciated DL385 (2 x Opteron 275, 13 GB of RAM)

    I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.1 LTS 64 bits.

    I installed vmware-server - 2.0.2 - 203138 - update.patch

    VMware-server - 2.0.2 - 203138.x86_64.tar.gz

Then I did p2v of old machines Debian/AMD64, that works perfectly.

Then, I wanted to try my luck with Win2008R2. I had read that my CPU probably would not support this guest operating system, but I decided to try and they install fine, but they are incredibly unstable and lock up quite often.

In the paper, I see messages like

    #UD 9a25de9e sz = 1 ct = 96

    03:07:44.009 18 August: vmx | Captured signal 15 - tid 10720 (eip 0x7f885d7adf83)

I then found a post related to the 275, which recommended

    CPUID.1.EAX = ""--: 0000:0000:0000::: 0101:-""

I added this, but he has not really changed anything.

So, the question now is: is my CPU is just not compatible with R2, or have I missed something?

Of course, I'll do it and I'll take the points with humility...

  • need help to set the access rights of a vmware server 2.0.1 on vmware image

    Hello!

I have a vmware (running ubuntu server 9.04) image that was created with a vmware server installation varsion 1.0.9. now I decided to upgrade to the host, which means that the host totally changed: new equipment, new OS, new vmware-server-version: 2.0.1

My problem atm is, I may not know, what would be the appropriate access rights (chown/chmod) for this vmware image. during the installation of vmware server 2.0.1 I was asked to specify some 'administrative user' where I took the an im working with Linux itself (lets call it "user").

so, when I copied the old vmware image in the data store (/ var/lib/vmware/VirtualMachines for me), chown-ed the folder including all files init by A, setting chmod to something like 600, the console vmware (web surface) told me that there were several problems with the image and couln can't be started etc. etc. etc...

I played with several rights to the image and the only thing that seemed to help was setting the folder and all files included in 'root' with the command chmod chown '777'... not what I would call 'secured '.

so: how to set the access rights for the virtual machines? I want that they have only minimal rights as possible and especially nothing like root: 777...

My static VM files, as in those who are not dynamically created when the virtual machine starts, are the property of root, root of group with permissions of 711. Root is the user that I have chosen as the admin user when you run vmware - config.pl. My users do not have direct access to this server, so I'm not too worried about the permissions. You can give different rights for different users to different virtual machines, creating roles and their allocation to users/groups. On that, the details are in Chapter 10 of the user guide - http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vmserver2.pdf.

  • Best Linux o/s to be used for VMWare Server 2

    Hi guys,.

What would be the best Linux o/s to be used for VMWare Server 2 and why?

Are there known traps or other questions that you may have experienced with some operating systems.

    Thanks for the comments.

I don't know about the 'best' that I only use openSUSE x 64 but I find it incredibly stable and reliable, especially when compared to a lot of Vista (out of production). Image single with 8 GB disks and non - RAID SATA with usually about 10 virtual machines running constantly. CentOS and Ubuntu seem to appear a lot here, but that could be wrong, since people in general do not post when things are working very well. Fedora seems to have arisen recently with more than its share of problems.

  • Has anyone made it using the "Update Image" feature in Eloqua?

We did not have much success with the help of the new feature "Update Image" Interior Eloqua - especially on pages that are built 100% in HTML and imported into. Anyone succeeded with the help of the new "Update Image"? If so, I would like to know how you use (outside the WYSIWYG). Maybe it's the flaw - it works with the WYSIWYG - someone can confirm? (support could not or would not)

    Thank you

I'm not sure I understand exactly what you're asking, but in E10, for updating an image, I go to the assets > library > Images > double click on the image to update, click on the "Update Image" button and download the new image. There are sometimes a few minutes for the update display assets.

  • Impossible to use VMWare Server and Virtual PC at the same time?

I have a Win 7 box I use VirtualPC (unfortunately, VPN to the employer only supports the 32-bit Win XP).

If I try to start any virtual machines using VMWare Server, power on and then immediately off.  Tried several different VMs.

However, if I disable VirtualPC, they all work normally.

Then... there at - it a known issue with the help of Virtual PC and VMWare Server at the same time?

BTW, I didn't see this problem when you use Virtual PC and VMWare Player at the same time.

VirtualPC leaves the CPU of the exploitation of VMX root, which is a restricted mode.  VMware Server is problems to switch between legacy mode and long (this switch is prohibited when the CPU is in VMX root operation).  The current versions of the workstation and the player are able to circumvent this restriction.

  • You can convert a virtual server on a single machine in VMware Server on another computer using ESXi?

    Here is my scenario:

    Machine 1

    Server5 - host VMware Server 1.0.6 version

Is within Server5 Server6 running on VMware Server & Server7

    Machine 2

    Created an ESXi Server

I want to one Server11 newly created on the ESXi machine be Server7.

All machines are running MS Server 2003 R2 SP2

I tried using the conversion tool and get an error message "actively denied connection to the target computer.  I tried all the possible scenarios regarding the installation of conversion on each machine tool.  I made sure that telnet runs on both machines.  I found little or no information on this error message on the VMware site.  Is there a better way to convert this virtual machine that use the conversion tool?  It sounds simple enough, but I'm obviously missing something.  Thanks in advance.

Stand-alone installation of converter on the host that is running Server 1.0.6.  http://www.VMware.com/download/converter/

Turning off 6 Server and Server 7.

In the first step of the Converter Wizard, select the option for an engine off the coast of the virtual machine.  This should allow you to select the VMX file using a button 'Browse '.

VMware server uses hardware version 7 by default. ESXi uses hardware version 4. You will need to use the converter to go beyond the material differences.

But I have not found the two sample applications provided (usr/share/doc/vmware/vmware-vmci/samples/or C:\Program Tools\VMCI\SampleApplications\README from VMware).

Can you tell me where I can get these please the sample?

I'm not I'm sorry, but that doesn't mean there is not No. You can get more hits if you post in the developer communities. Host communications direct comments any is generally deprecated for security reasons, it is probably why there are not many, if any, API in this area.

  • Control using ActiveX MKS with VMWare Server 2 - qsp.js - missing?

    Hello

I have VMWare Server 2 got up and running, created a few virtual machines was playing with her. I'm try VMWare to see if I want to move to Microsoft Virtual Server 2005. One thing that I really liked Virtual Server 2005 is the ability to use my virtual machine in an ActiveX control (I know... I know... "I like being able to tab between virtual machines while I am already IN the admin of the site). I downloaded the CAB file, extract the files, installed the plugin and registered the DLL by following the instructions in this article:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/sc_search.do?cmd=displayKC & docType = kc & externalId = 1002342 & sliceId = 1 & docTypeID = DT_KB_1_1 & dialogID = 1390001 & StateID = 0% 200% 20859477

I entered my config in the sample HTML IE, and when I open the HTML file I get a black box indicating the plugin is running, but there is no connection. When I turn on debugging in IE, I get an error that says:

    Line: 7

    Error: 'Querystring' is not defined

In the debugger window, it shows the line fails to instantiate an object qsp. There is a reference to script in a file called "qsp.js" that contains the object that he tries to instantiate in the HTML code. Hmm, where is qsp.js? It is not in the cab file and I can't find it on my hard drive. I downloaded and installed the vSphere SDK and can't find it in one of these directories or the other? I looked in the temporary IE files, but it isn't here either.

Any ideas on where I can get this little ole JavaScript file? It's all of that I need connect to my VM...?

I was wondering if there was another (easier) way to achieve what you want. This rings a Bell for many years when I used to use Virtual Server. I use the VI/vSphere Client to manage my server 2.x hosts but unfortunately is not available with a gentle 2.0.1 installation.

Always forgetting the missing javascript file, it works if you hard code the parameters to the connect method? Mine is:

    MKS. Connect ("192.168.0.12", 902, '[standard] XP Pro VPN / Windows XP Professional.vmx","username","password");

Note the slightly weird for the VM name search syntax (although I suppose at this point as to the format, it's wanting). That's what you get using the command "vmrun" with the parameter 'list' to show how VMs. ex:

    vmrun t h https://yourserver:8333 / sdk -u user_name Pei password server list

Obviously, if we cannot get the connection to work there is little interest in the conclusion/autour missing Javascript coding.
