Upgrade from ESX3.5 to vSphere 5.0

Hi all

I have a project to upgrade on update my old host ESX 3.5 and VirtualCenter 2.5 to the most recent and vSphere vCenter Server 5.0 and 5.0.

After having read in the doc upgrade and because of the environment is small, I decided to build a new vCenter Server from scratch rather than go through the upgrade process (mainly due to wanting to put vCenter on a virtual computer, upgrade the operating system to 64-bit, separate the VCDB on an external SQL Server etc.).

I'm hoping to do an orderly migration where I vMotion VMs off-a former host, upgrade to vSphere 5, and vMotion the VMs, then turn it back on for her.

My question is quite simple (I hope):

Can I add vSphere 5.0 ESXi hosts and ESX 3.5 hosts in the same Cluster HA (assuming they are configured the same way in regards to the vSwitch and vMotion) after I added all hosts in vCenter 5?

This is so that I can vMotion VMs ESX 3.5 hosts former on the new 5.0 vSphere hosts after an upgrade of the host.

Virtual machines are all alive and I can't afford to have downtime...

Thanks for your time...

-Anthony

Hi Anthony,.

-There is no direct upgrade from ESX / I have 3.5 to 5.0

-See link that has the checklist of HA and on ESX 35 x patch requirement inorder to add to 5.0 HA cluster

http://pubs.VMware.com/vSphere-50/index.jsp?topic=/com.VMware.vSphere.avail.doc_50/GUID-BA85FEC4-A37C-45BA-938D-37B309010D93.html

-If you upgrade VC25Ux, make sure that host certificates enabled, other wise HA configuration breaks down, link above has this info also

-Yes, VMotion works between 5.0 ESX hosts and ESX35x whether network, CPU compatibility are according to the needs.

We currently have our VCServer and race, but I'll be upgrading for Vsphere 4.0 Update 1. To do this, I need to build a new server, because our current server is not compatible with the hardware requirements. First of all, is there an easy way to migrate the settings from one server to another? Also the networks I will build as my local lan and my dmz, network adapter settings, etc... be there when I take my guests on the new Vsphere server. Are the specific server VC parameters or appearing in ESX boxes themselves?

    jkoelker wrote:

So since I only change my virtual Center Server and without changing the physical material of boxes ESX but upgrading from 4.0 I still need to worry recreate all my settings. Depending on your position, the parameters are all specific to the ESX boxes and not the server Vcenter himself? I read that correctly? The only thing that happens is my Vcenter server. I'll put as the utility to update on what will update my esx boxes and Vsphere.

If you do an upgrade to ESX4, so yes all the settings will be retained.

I was under the impression that you have been rebuild the ESX host, that would be my choice of the upgrade.

  • Eager to HELP! On the upgrade from ESX3.5 to vSphere4.1

Help! Help! Help! This problem has me stuck for a few days... Thank you all for your kindly help in advance!

I need to upgrade 2 ESX 3.5 server to vSphere4.1, and I've updated vcenter from 2.5 to 4.1. VCenter is installed on one of the virtual machines in ESX3.5 server (let's call this node-A, another node-B ESX Server).

I intend to upgrade the node-B, then move vcenter and Update Manager from node A to node B, and then to upgrade node-A. This process is OK?

    For the upgade process:

I had Manager Update installation on another virtual computer on node A and download the ESX4.1.0.iso of "Host upgrade releases" using the vSphere client. Then I create a new baseline, choose the option to upgrade host base type and select a data store that resides on the local disk on node-B. Fix this reference to the node B, node b, then analyze the updates, result shows that this basic line is non-compliant. I don't know why it is non-compliant, I found not the newspaper.

Any tips on that? Thanks to you all!

The clean-up operation will not proceed if you got under virtual machines on the host you are trying to clean up.

Now, if you have configured mode fully automatic DRS, everything will be done for you (when you start the operation of sanitation, the host is placed in maintenance mode, then all running virtual machines are evacuated to another host). Otherwise, you'd have to all VMs running manually vmotion to another host.

  • upgrade from ESX3.5 Update 1 for update4 ESX3.5

Hello I have a group of 10 ESX3.5 update1 servers in the environment of having shared storage for virtual machines. My VC is already 3.5 update4. I need suggestions on how best to upgrade ESX3.5 update1 to ESX3.5 update4 without any downtime (if possible, which I think is possible can I vmotion virtual machines to other hosts in the cluster). Any reference to specific document to update the upgrade only would be very useful. Thank you!

VMware Update Manager is the best way to go.  Simply create a base line, attach it to your cluster and clean up against it.  VUM will automate the process by issuing a 'to enter maintenance mode' of the host, all virtual machines off migration to other hosts in the cluster, putting the host in maintenance mode by rebooting and taking the host out of maintenance mode... Rinse and repeat.

If you do not Crossover, you can always do the process manually by using DVD media and choosing "upgrade".

and finally if you want to you can do using esxupdate

  • Suggestion on the move from ESX3.5 to ESXi4.1 in mixed environment

    Hi people,
I just wanted to know regarding the upgrade from ESX3.5 to ESXi 4.1. In my environment, there are 40 ESX ESX 3.5 version with 2 having 4.0 with SAN and DAS storage, but due to budget constraints we modernize only 5 ESX to ESXi 4.1 and the rest may be later. Need to know everything by keeping these diffirent version ESX in a mixed environment in different cluster will be no problem from the point of view of performance. Any suggestion will be highly appreciated. VCenter version is 4.1

  • Direct upgrade from esx 3.5 to esx 4.1

    Hello

I've already upgraded to vCenter 2.5 to 4.1, now I'm upgraded by train from esx 3.5 to esx 4.1 and all of the articles and videos that I have read say that I need to download the upgrade zip file and do the upgrade through VMware host update utility (as I am only upgrade 2 hosts).

However, when I try to download the zip file, the only option I get is

ESX 4.1 Update 1 (updated the ZIP of ESX 4.0)
Use this package with vCenter Update Manager 4.1 U1 or vihostupdate vCLI or esxupdate command line to upgrade ESX ESX 4.0 to ESX 4.1 update 1.

Which allows an upgrade to version 4.0 (or if she says).  Can I use this zip file?

I even went back through all the versions 4.0, and there is no upgrade for 3.5 anywhere zip file?

How can I make this update of the utility of the upgrade using the host?

    Concerning

    Steven

In my view, an error in the above steps.

Are you using ESX and ESXi, you will need to download ESX 4.1 install ISO for upgrade from ESX3.5 to ESX4.1 driver

You must use vCenter Update manage or esxupgrade.sh for upgrade. No other tool as vihostupdate, host update utility etc. are not supported.

For more details from vCenter update manager, refer to the admin guide and for esxupgrade.sh, see http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=1009440&sliceId=2&docTypeID=DT_KB_1_1&dialogID=170100028&stateId=1%200%20170096294

  • Upgrade from 6.0 to 6.2 horizon view

    Hello

I will update 6.0 seen Horizon to 6.2 in two weeks. I read the guide 6.2 upgrade and have my flattened upgrade plan, more or less.

Now that I'm not sure of the East (this is the first time that I am ignorant version), is / was there of any changes from 6.0 to 6.1 which must be taken into consideration, but is not mentioned in the guide to 6.2 day?

Also, I currently don't have implemented SSO implementation. How the look of the task would get SSO running? Think to implement SSO before the update... one thing at a time...

High level of questions, I know. But I am happy to provide more details if it is necessary.

    Thank you

The date of issue for Horizon view 6.0.1 6.0.2 6.1, 6.1.1 in detail what is included in this version.  The release notes for 6.2 will include shades or known issues related to the upgrade to this version.

It does not appear that the upgrade from 6.0 to 6.2 is supported.  Page 11 of the upgrade guide indicates that the 'latest version of VMware Horizon 6.0 (with view) maintenance, which is 6.0.2"is the supported platform that allows to upgrade.

Also, when the upgrade of your Agent view, uninstall existing agent, restart and install the new agent of 6.2.

Check the Product Interoperabiity matrix to ensure your versions of vSphere and vCenter are supported in point 6.2.  Also, do not forget to check your version of DB is supported in 6.2 (for the composer and DB events) here.

  • Lack of Configuration section in VAMI, vCenter active watch is not Accessible after upgrade from 5.5 to 5.8

Hi all!  I'm having a bit of a problem that I can't find a solution for anywhere.

I have a lab with two boxes of vcsa under 5.5 U2d, and wanted to move to 5.8 SRM.  I started the VRA 5.5.1 (I do not remember, real version number which was with MRS 5.5.1), mount the ISO 5.8 on both sides, restarted both, took the update of the CD (following the official update steps), but after the restart, the two vCenters show "enabled (not available)" and still list it as 5.5.1.

I have validated the RV service is running.  I have been following this thread, regenerated certificates for the TWO vCenters & TWO VRAs: vsphere upgrade from 5.5 to 5.8 Server replication enabled (not accessible) has yet no joy.

I checked the CROWD and the IP address is correct.  I tried to check /opt/vmware/hms/conf/extension.xml for the thumbprint and the file does not exist on each box, the only thing it is extension - template.xml.

On the one hand, I have reset the vCenter database (/ usr/sbin/vpxd - d of VMware KB: reset the vCenter Server repository embedded for vCenter Server Appliance 5.x ), deployed a new VRA 5.8, and he had to register very well.  It's then it dawned on me what missed me: almost all the Startup Configuration where you specify the vCenter (see attachment)

For grins, I recorded the VRA 5.8 of the 'old' vcsa work and tried to save it to the 'new' vcsa, which he could not with a lot of what looked like errors, assuming that because of 'new' vcsa already having a recorded SOAP VRA.  I re-recorded it back to the 'old' vcsa and is happy.  Installed SRM 5.8 (uninstalled 5.5 because I started with a clean database in the vcsa) and all is well on the side of the 'old '.

I'm trying not to go this route on the 'new' side, as I a VDS, vSAN and twice as many hosts, so I won't recreate the vDC, cluster, add guests, etc.  I copied to /opt/vmware/hms/conf/extension-template.xml /opt/vmware/hms/conf/extension.xml and restarted.  Footprint arises, but still no configuration tips.

    Anyone have any ideas?

Thanks for your reply. You said that the VRA is on a cluster, East of thatcluster HA-enabled? Because where HA must restart the VRA on another host, it does so through the ESX host and this could have emptied the OVF environment. And to even you'll always a working configuration until you start the upgrade or you try to perform any operation through VAMI configuration page. To be on the safe side, I think before upgrade, you can power off and then turn the unit on (simple restart is not enough) to make sure that the EPS of the FVO is recreated.

  • vCenter Storage Monitoring Service Service initialization failed after the upgrade from 5.1 to 5.5

I recently upgraded from vCenter 5.1 to 5.5. After the upgrade, I started getting health warnings for the VMware vCenter monitoring of Storage Service that say "failed to initialize the Service." I restarted the vCenter server and restart services several times and who has not deleted the question. When I look in the SMS. LOG file there is no activity in it since I did the upgrade (a week or more there). All prior activity in the SMS. JOURNAL seems to be well upward until the upgrade took place though. I found at least half a dozen KB articles that describe the various reasons why this error may occur, but they all relate to older versions of vCenter. Just to be complete, although I saw the symptoms in the articles and none of them really seem to be the same as what I see. My hypothesis is that perhaps the SMS did not get properly re-installed upgrading because I don't see any SMS subdirectory in the directory \Program Files\VMware\Infrastructure\tomcat\webapps but I do not know if this directory must exist on a 5.5 installation.

If you would be grateful if anyone has any advice for troubleshooting for this type of error.

    Thank you

    Mike

Change the credentials of the service account for VMware vSphere Profile-Driven Storage Service to those used to start the VMware vCenter Server service and the service of VMware VirtualCenter Management Webservices. By default, the account used Local System.

Restart the service, the change was made, and then check.
