USB to RS232

I WAS using a NI USB-to-RS232/4 hub and communicate successfully with an external device for a few days.  He decided to vacation elsewhere, and I found myself in extremis.  In the Discussion, looking for help (I think) "USB to RS232", I came across a post from someone with the same problem.  After trying the solutions proposed by OR, which I did as well after a long discussion with the support of NEITHER, the guy with the same problem solved by buying a USB hub to RS232 CommFront.

I cannot find the thread now and can't get MAX to recognize the hub of CommFront, so I can't be a VISA resource. I uninstalled and reinstalled the driver NI-VISA and NOR-Serial 3.9.1 the hub appears in the device as Manager "usb > rs232.»  I would like to contact the person who started the thread I negelcted to record to learn how they have solved the problem, or am desperate for suggestions on how to get stuff NOR recognize an alien species, as the hub of CommFront.

Thanks to you two.  I was able to change the name of "COM" after searching a bit in the Device Manager.   In series with the external instrument communication is now possible. I learned a lot of things.

NOR should have a third option in the trade of these messages.  In addition to 'Reply' and 'Accept as Solution', the third option would be ' response and accept as a Solution. "  In this way, the thread can be closed while still giving the opportunity to thank those who provided solutions.

Thanks again.

I wonder how do I get the "USB to RS232" device name, description, and serial number, as NiMAX is capable of (see the attached image NiMAX-USB - 232.jpg).

By using the function viFindRsrc (as in the example of FindRsrc_CVI.cws), I get the name of the resource only: "ASRLxx::INSTR" (viFindRsrc.jpg attachment).

  • USB to RS232 (adapter OR or not)

    Hello:

I have to use a USB-RS232 adapter to connect my laptop to a device for the control.
The control will be through LabView library VISA.

However, I found that the price for the USB-RS232 adapter varies a lot.
NOR has one (http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/en/nid/12844), more than 100 books, whilte there are many other USB-RS232 adapter costs only 10-30 pounds in other locations.

What I wonder if do USB-RS232 adapter or this price?
Is there a compatibility issue (single adapter of NOR is compatibile to LabView?) or other conduct issues I should be aware of?

I just want to understand the difference between adapter OR other less expensive adapter before making the purchase (but I will not avoid the issue of compatibility)

    Thank you very much
    Best regards, Jhensi

    Jhensi,

There are many companies making USB-RS232 adapters that work with LabVIEW using NI-VISA.  The problem is that some cards drivers are not fully compliant with the RS232 specification.

Another thing to consider is the isolation.  If you are in an industrial environment you wish to an isolated USB-serial adapter.  Personally, I use adapters of NOR and electronics of B and B.  If you search the forums you will find other manufacturers mentioned as well.

  • rs232 USB problem

    Hello world

I've been in vain looking for a solution to a problem that I seem to have with standard equipment communication using a converter USB to rs232.

I'm using Labview 2013 on a windows 7 computer and using a converter using the FTDI chip.  My computer recognizese converter and NOR-MAX recognizes as ASRL7::INSTR that I named "pc830."  I've attached a screenshot of my VI.

I am tempted to write a command in a pc830 (p) 169 170 order of read/write ASCII) asking a piston position data. The problem I encounter is that, while I can send a command, I'm not receiving all data during the reading of my program and my connection time part (error-1073807339 occurred to read in PC830PosVelExtractor.vi VISA, VISA: (Hex 0xBFFF0015) timeout expired before the operation ended.).

The first and obvious questions are if the serial port settings I use are correct.  I'm essentially rewriting of a previous Labview program that allow to control this piston even.  I took (and verified) that these are the correct values (baud rate, stop bit, etc.).  In addition, this old program sending the \02255\sR\s10034:96\r message takes up a replica of the equipment of series with the position data (for example \02V26057:148\r).  I checked that the hexagonal version of the message sent by my new program is the same as the old.

Now, to check that the USB cable works in fact, I did a loopback test by opening a window to test VISA.  In this regard, bypassing the cable in a rs232 configuration, I'm able to successfully send and receive this same order of \02255\sR\s10034:96\r.  I got a timeout issue before, however, I activated the terminal character, and he went.  The message is sent and received without problem.

Back to my program, I activated the same way the terminal character (\r) from the serial port hoping to get rid of the question.  When it is connected to my standard equipment, I always get the question of timeout during playback.  However, if I short the cable once again in a rs232 loopback configuration, I can send and receive my \02255\sR\s10034:96\r message without problem.

I actually connected the old and the new program the cable just to see that I could talk with other devices.  It works very well, and I may as well read and write in both directions of each programs.

My last attempt to diagnose/difficulty of the question was to add a "hunt read buffer" just before you perform the write operation.  It didn't matter, because as far as I know.

I would like to hear from someone with suggestions that I am just about ideas at this stage.  We have no space to add a serial port of the computer, and converters with FTDI chips reviews seem to be good.  How can I get this thing to talk!

  • Add a printer series using RS232 converter USB Vista

I tried to use a converter USB to RS232 to connect a HP Laserjet 5 L printer to a laptop using windows vista.
The driver for the converter has been added and is recognized by the computer, but I'm unable to add the printer from the control panel (I have the printer driver).

Should I change the settings of the printer in the port section or any changes since the Device Manager?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hey Fabian,.

HP LaserJet 5 L seems to be a very old printer and it seems that there are no updated drivers from Hpwebsite for Vista based computers: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=15005&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=25480&swLang=8&taskId=135&swEnvOID=2093

The printer is recognized as new hardware found?

If possible, connect the printer directly to the RS232 port on another computer and check what is happening.

Other USB devices work fine on this machine?

  • Satellite A110-137: serial USB 1.1 Cable does not work

My computer is Satellite A110-137 and the operating system is Windows XP Home Edition v 5.1 service pack 2. Language setting is the Finland.

    I have a prolific USB driver cable RS232 2.0.0.26 version 1.1.

It does not at all. When I try to connect it to a package Kantronics KAM radio modem using Hyper Terminal there is an error COM3 message: ei voi games. Tarkista porttiasetukset. (COM3: cannot open.) Check the port settings).

The settings that I have are 9600 bps, 8 data bits, zero parity, 1 stop bit, hardware flow conrol. It's the same thing in device driver settings and the settings of the Hyper Terminal. It is 100% sure that the problem is somehow related to Toshiba or Windows XP as the same USB converter RS232 perfectly works and right the first time with for example Fujitsu ErgoPro have Windows 2000 (and it's a machine Pentioum 233, very old stuff indeed).

I can't get any help of Prolific, their home pages seem to be offline now.

    Hello

I studied a little on the net and it seems that this converter RS232 USB 1.1 creates a virtual serial port (possibly the com 3)
As far as I know the built-in modem is using the same port.
Possibly there could be compatibility problems.

However, this is not a product of Toshiba and this is why I would recommend contacting support of the prolific.
I've been on the site and it of online.

  • YX button not working not not answer

Hello world... I would be very grateful if someone could give me a hand with my new HP 50 g calculator...

Quite simply... the button Yx and LN and ex functions do not work. There must be a mode or a setting that I need to change but I can't understand it...

Please give me a hand as soon as POSSIBLE!

    Thank you...

    Hello

Please explain the keystrokes that you use.

Note: it is important to see which mode of operation the calculator is in:

RPN or algebraic (press the MODE button to see the operating mode).

These modes have fundamentally different ways of the order of entering values for functions.

(Sorry if I'm saying things you already know).

Otherwise, if it's only this key that does not work, try a test of the keyboard:

Press on and hold IT and press F4, release the keys and the following menu should appear:

    1 LCD DISPLAY 2. KEY
    3 FLASH 4. SRAM
    5 USB 6.RS232
    7 RING 8. IRDA
    9 CARD A.AUTOTEST

    Select "2. TOUCH"by pressing number 2.

Each key (do not press the keys in a particular order). Appears in a grid with small squares. As each key is pressed, the place associated with this key is disabled. Once all the keys were pressed, the calculator will automatically return to the main menu of test.

To exit the main menu to test, press-F3.

If this test determines that the key does not work, then probably, it's a hardware fault.

    Best regards.

  • While loop stops unexpectedly

    Hello world

I have a problem with while loops.

Im trying to write a program that allows me to control the temperature of a hot plate, using as a starting point one of the examples in LabVIEW (basic series writing and reading). So basically the program sends an order asking the real temperature of the heating plate and it then reads a response with the State, then the user writes a temperature (the sub - VI creates the command that is sent to the cooking plate), then he reads a confirmation response. the while loop is to monitor the temperature and change it if necessary

Sometimes it works for about 30 seconds and sometimes for a few minutes, and then everything stops playback, I don't get the error messages, it stops just a response.

The hot plate is a pro H550 MS7 and im using a USB to RS232 converter

PD, I'm pretty new using labVIEW, sorry for my bad English.

Greetings and thanks for the help

Found the manual.  Here is a summary (edition - in fact, it is essentially all of the manual, just condensed and without 'images'):

    • The statement format: prefix, Instruction, data frame, Checksum
    • Command: Prefix is 0xFE
    • Answer: The prefix is 0xFD
    • Add at least 50 msec between pairs of bytes
    • Data frame, send high and low bytes
    • Checksum = sum of the instructions, the frame data, but not prefix
    • Commands and responses seem to be mainly sequences of 6 bytes

    OK, this helps a lot.

The first issue with the OP code: turn off the stop character.  The protocol uses binary communication protocols.  The stop character is only useful for communications ASCII protocols.  Nor if he was being a 0x0A in data, VISA Read stop reading right there because it's the stop character and it is enabled by default.

Second, always do not have need of the bytes to the Port.  You know what you send and you know what should be the answer.  Therefore, suffice to say the VISA of reading to read the required number of bytes.  If your delay is long enough, you do also not waiting for him by saying the VISA must read the number of bytes to read.

I need to read data from an instrument using RS-232 serial connection. The instrument transmits data as soon as it is turned on. the power button is on the instrument, and I need to send a signal to transmit data. I use NEITHER usb to RS232 hub as my laptop is not a RS-232 port. I tried the basic writing and read.vi but can't get the buffer.

Try to run with Hyperterminal to see if you have found anything of your device.  When Hyperterminal works, then try your VI.

You don't need really the business structure in your vi.  You wiring is difficult to keep up with all these curves and segments being hidden.  Here's how your vi should look like:

  • LabVIEW base, protocols supported system of development and the basic features

    Hello

I ask this question here because I can't find that information on the web, or I get the technical support e-mail response. We are interested in acquiring a license of basis of Labview to start development to develop test for simple automation systems. The basic idea is to have a card with digital, analogue i/o, common seria interfaces: RS232, Ethernet, I2C or SPI. All this to interface HW under test.  A single port for communication with the PC (USB, Ethernet, RS232).

    We would like to know:

    (1) what protocols are supported by the Labview Base development system package.

    (2) if the license mode allows you to integrate MATLAB/C/C++ code.

    (3) in general, where a document that provides details on the characteristics of the Labview. We were not able to find a manual for it. Just this very basic with informaton purchase link: http://sine.ni.com/nips/cds/view/p/lang/no/nid/1385.

    Kind regards

    Jose

Have you looked at the page 'Buy' for LabVIEW? http://www.NI.com/LabVIEW/buy/

Basically, I think that LabVIEW base supports everything in terms of basic Windows protocols, but does not include LabVIEW RT or FPGA (for CompactRIO/FPGA targets) but you can use series, ethernet, etc. DAQmx for windows (and also the instrument 3rd party drivers). It doesn't have the enhanced math library or the application Builder so that you can not create executables/installers - you will need run your code in the development environment.

Alternatively, you can call external code .NET / C dll through the call library function node. You will not be able to incorporate Mathscript, because it is only in the complete edition upward.
