Use of NIC outside ESX

Hello

We lack ESX 3.5 on a server with 3 cards of IBM Pro/1000 PT PCIe quad. Currently none of the network adapters on these cards are used and ifconfig shows them as vmnic2 - vmnic13.

We want to take one of those unused cards and assign an IP address. We do NOT want to be part of the vswif0, or the Service Console or anything like that. ESX server has no need to be involved in this CARD care and feeding at all. We are trying to create a private network of dorsal between ESX server and another Unix server.

root@ESX# ifconfig vmnic5 IP netmask NM upwards

SIOCSIFADDR: Permission denied

SIOCSIFNETMASK: Cannot assign requested address

SIOCGIFADDR: Cannot assign requested address

SIOCSIFBROADCAST: Cannot assign requested address

All the research I found shows us how to create a vswif0 interface or a service Console interface, etc. No one seems to know or want to configure just an old plain NIC on the server for one use other than by ESX.

We are concerned, the server VM has no need to access these to all network interface cards. To this end, we tried:

root@ESX# vmkload_mod u e1000

modprobe e1000 root@ESX#

/lib/modules/2.4.21-47.0.1.ELvmnix/kernel/drivers/NET/e1000/e1000.o: init_module(2): no such device

Tip: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect parameters, including invalid i/o or IRQ module.

You can find more information in syslog or the output of dmesg

/lib/modules/2.4.21-47.0.1.ELvmnix/kernel/drivers/NET/e1000/e1000.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.21-47.0.1.ELvmnix/kernel/drivers/net/e1000/e1000.o failed

/lib/modules/2.4.21-47.0.1.ELvmnix/kernel/drivers/NET/e1000/e1000.o: insmod e1000 failed

So, it is less useful, and network interface cards disappeared completely from the system. So we ran vmkload_mod e1000 and they reappear as vmnic2 - vmnic13 again.

How can I put an IP address on one or more of these network cards - with or without having to go through the services of esx?

Thank you!

Using the VI Client is easier to connect directly to the host.

Select Configuration-> network

Click Add a network

Select "Service Console" as the type of

Select the NETWORK card you want to use

Give him the IP that you want to use.

This will create an vswif1 interface that is in reality a second IP address in the same (and only) Service Console

  • Using 2 NIC in the Workstation 6.5

    Hello

Recently, I started researching the use of VMware to use as programming devices. VMS, I created are used for industrial controllers using the NIC program. In our society, we use a normal cable network for all normal network traffic and a card wireless network for all emissions. I tried to configure 2 virtual bridged network cards in my virtual machine, but without any success. Is there a way I can work around this problem? Is there any other way how can I achieve this? It is really important that 2 networks remain separate from each other. I hope you have a solution for this problem. Thanks in advance.

    With sincere friendships.

Run the virtual network Editor.  Disable the automatic bypass.  Then, specify what physical NETWORK card you want to bridge to swtich VMnet0. and specify the other physical NETWORK card to the bridge to one of the unused VMnet (2-7, 9) switches.  In the settings of your virtual machine, the value of a virtual to be bridged NETWORK adapter (switch uses the VMnet0) and the value of a customizable and specify the VMnet switch that you precede.

  • Try using four nic as an external switch ports

    Hello

I have a quad port gigabit nic in my esx Server I want to use it as a 'switch '.  that is, I have a vSwitch with all my VM on it, and I have included 5 NICs in there.  One is an internal NETWORK interface that works very well, and the other 4 are quad port PCI-E adapter.  For some reason when I plug a physical computer into one of these 4 ports, I'm not able to get a network connection and cannot communicate with the virtual machine.

Is there something I'm missing here?

    Thank you

    Hi Dontinou,

If you want to connect physical machines directly to external ports? It is not how ESX should work but why not, special purpose...

First of all, you need to use crossover cables (or have the network card can detect direct connections).

Then, you must have a group of port by physical map (or a vSwitch) because when you join a virtual computer in a vSwitch, it uses all the physical ports but only one. Then configure each port group to use an identified uplink and attach each virtual NETWORK adapter to a group of different ports. Finally, give a different IP address to each vNic.

The problem with this design is that you need to configure each physical machine the IP addresses of the virtual machine they want to contact on they are connected to a specified card... It's not easy. And physical machines will not be able to contact each other, unless you install a router within the ESX VM.

You'd better buy a small switch.

    Good luck.

  • Invisible NIC for ESX but seen by lspci

This may be a simple solution, but I'm not find resolution.  Run ESX 4.0 on Dell R710 with a NIC four ports on the motherboard and four ports in PCI1 NIC, turning off the system to add a second NIC to four ports PCI2 (same brand and the seller as the first), fed by system up, but does not have the new network adapters plugged into what either.  VCenter brought to the top but the second quad-port NIC is not seen by ESX, but can be seen when I do an lspci | grep 'Ethernet '.  Esxcfg-NICS - l does not show the new NETWORK map either because I guess that it will only show these network cards known or used by ESX.  Is it possible to have the system will reload the drivers without restarting the computer for "Unknown device" NETWORK card ports and allow them to be seen by ESX?  If this isn't the case, should ports be connected to a switch device or network for the ESX to recognize that they exist in order to use?

Two VLAN different connection to the iSCSI SAN. You should have the same subnet, but a different IP addresses (if any) connecting to the San from each host (depends on the SAN)... For example 192.168.130.25 for ESX1 and 192.168.130.30 for ESX2. Unless your SAN network covers actually two subnets on your local network, you create a question where you don't need to. I would also use separate NETWORK card for vMotion traffic and another for iSCSI. Separate them VM traffic too (makes everything cleaner and less chance of collisions and too load performance causing one issues for each other. This is why it is a good idea to have at least four, if not six, physical NIC (or ports) within an ESX/ESXi server.

  • Adding 2nd NIC killed ESX Server

    All,

Thank you for taking the time to read my post. Here are the environment and then my question.

    3 - DELL R510 - Dual Core Quad - Intel systems

The area has "2" Integrated NIC

as well as "2" QUAD Port - PCI Intel network interface cards

NIC 0 - integrated NETWORK card is a system where installed- and it is plugged into a standard Switch CISCO GIG, the tag VLAN 108

NIC 1 - integrated is configured for iSCSI connectivity

LOCATION 0 - Port Quad PCI NIC

Port # 3 is connected to a GROUP of CIRCUITS on a CISCO SWITCH with VLAN 108, 104, 107 and 110 on it

Port # 1 is used for the 2nd iSCSI connection

LOCATION 1 - Port Quad PCI NIC

    # 7 port is connected to a different GROUP of CIRCUITS on a CISCO SWITCH with VLAN 108, 104, 107 and 110 on it

All three servers are installed with ESX4 update 1

When I go into vCenter to one of the three servers and go to the primary Switch virtual networking, if I add #3 NIC or Port #7 NIC to the virtual switch (it currently integrated NIC 0 in) the system disconnects the network and to connect to vCenter losses and the entire network. If physically I reboot the ESX Server, it is NOT on the network. I have the tag VLAN in NIC0 defined 4095 to accept all the VLANS as well. (I tried with and without the tag of VLAN 4095 - same result)

    Here are my questions:

1 - Why is - what happens? How it should be configured?

    2. is there a way to get NIC0 to return to the network without having to re - install ESX?

I reinstalled the boxes several times now and tried many variations of combinations of nic, and they all end up with the ESX Server disconnected from the network and does not.

Really looking for some common sense here... Please and thank you.

Hmmmm, shooting a little in the dark, but I think your next 2 steps are:

    (1) get the SC (vswif0) MAC and check your MAC address table switch to fly throughout of ports

    (2) on the console, use esxcfg-vswitch for uplink associated with the Group of port SC the first list, and then delete the 2nd network card.  This should get your SC direct return and leave the new map available NETWORK the vswitch, simply not group ports SC.  (And you don't have to reinstall :-).)

  • How to manually configure the IP, subnet, gateway on the new NIC in ESX Server 3.5

Hello, first let me say that I am relatively new on ESX Server and so the question I ask here may seem trivial but I looked through the documentation and other threads and that you have not found quite what I'm looking for.

I have an ESX Server 3.5 with a number of production virtual machines running works very well.  I need to install a second NETWORK adapter because my use of the network will go through the roof, once I convert a production server used in a virtual machine on this machine.  I have a server Dell PE 2950 and I bought an Intel Pro/1000 PT dual port PCI-e adapter that is on the list of hardware supported.  In the reading I did, every reason to believe that when I set up the server, the new network cards will appear in the VIC where I can assign to a new Vswitch and so forth, so I get it.  What I don't see in the VIC is a way to specify the NETWORK adapter settings.

The problem is that the switch I connect to, put in place by our network management staff, will not be DHCP settings of NETWORK card for me, I have to manually configure the IP, subnet and gateway until I can start talking.  When I initially installed ESX, I was able to provide all parameters of NETWORK card installation - which is not the case now with the new NETWORK card and the operating system all this up and running.  How do I do this?  Thanks for any help.

    ... BillH

Adding another physical NETWORK card to your vSwitch will make this new Teddy to comply with policies of vSwitch.  In particular, the load balancing algorithm will determine how the additional bears will get used.  By default, this is done with switch port ID.  This means that each vm NIC that feeds, will choose the next available bear to talk about.  The virtual NIC will essentially be Robin and choose the next Teddy online to talk it through and will so remain like that until a failure condition occurs, or the virtual machine is restarted.

If you know a particular VM is a high user of I/O, and you want to separate its traffic from the rest of your virtual machine, and then create a new portgroup on vSwitch0, assign this new portgroup 3rd Teddy and use the other two as before.  In addition, in your regular exchanges, remove or make sleep 3rd Teddy.  In this way you completely isolate the heavy vm from the rest of your systems.

I thought I knew how to do this, but I can't seem to find the screen where you can assign a VLAN to physical NICS in an ESX 3.5 Server?  Could someone please tell me where it is?

    Thank you very much

    Do you mean in networks:

To change the label of network and VLAN ID for a group of ports

    1. connect to the VMware VI Client and select the host from the inventory Panel.

    2. click on the Configuration tab, and then click Network.

    3. on the right side of the screen, find the vSwitch to change, and then click Properties for the vSwitch.

    4. click on the Ports tab.

    5. Select the port group, and then click on edit.

    6. click on the general tab.

    7. change the label of network or VLAN ID , and then click OK to save the new settings.
