Using Thunderbird for GMail - IMAP

I tried to follow the recommendations of Google for IMAP using Thunderbird.
Their recommendations:

On the server settings tab:
The arrival of new messages at startup > checked
The arrival of new messages every 10 minutes > checked
When I delete a message > mark as deleted
Clean up ("Expunge") Inbox on exit > let off
Empty trash on exit > let off

If I followed the instructions for the deleted message, I find myself with many email in Thunderbird that have just a line through them, but not deleted. I don't understand why this has been recommended, unless the motive was to try to reduce the amount of actions performed on the server.

I wonder if other users of TB have seen elsewhere, or have the best suggestions?

The recommendation was made to avoid the problem of deleting a message that has been copied to another folder: Gmail deletes both the original and the copy (see the last paragraph of the section labels). There is a discussion of the issue starting here. Note in particular the recommendations of bkennelly here and here.

  • My mail is migrated to a new system, server and they have adopted Microsoft Outlook which is terrible. I use Thunderbird for 20 years and loved.

When my main mail server migrated to a new system, they used Microsoft Outlook to organize my email. I used it for almost 2 months and it's awful. I would like to restore my old Thunderbird program. It seems to be working: I get the number of messages in my Inbox on the Thunderbird icon and an audio invites all new messages are received. The only problem is that I can't get in my mail because Thunderbird will accept none of the passwords that I offer (I only have three). Can someone please fix it so I can reset my password or have Thunderbird recognize one of my passwords? The main server wants to open a new account in Thunderbird, but it means that I lose all the data from the old account.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Using the 31.3.0 version, which I just installed on a Vista laptop.

How can I add a toolbar to the compose window - all toolbars in the main window are checked.

In the composition window, hold down the 'alt' key, press v and select "toolbar." Turn on the lack of menu bar and the toolbar.

  • I use Thunderbird on multiple computers to the same gmail account but I have a laptop with little memory, so I need this laptop only to download a few files

I use Thunderbird on multiple computers to the same gmail account. I have a small laptop with very little memory and it runs out of disk space when it downloads all my folders. I would only download some of my file on the laptop, but keep all the folder on my other computers because they do not have problems with disk space. When I unsubscribe records in 'manage folder subscriptions' then he cancels his subscription on all my computers, not just the laptop. When I go to 'Properties' on the folder and sets 'retention individual police' these settings are not applied at all. What can I do?

All of the messages in each folder will appear in your message list. But this does not mean all the bodies of messages are downloaded, if you have properly configured the parameters of the disk. If what I described above stuck in your settings then Message body should be downloaded only 'on demand' when you click on each message.

To confirm this install the addon glodaquilla, which has a column "on the disk" that indicates if a message is on the disk. If you want, after you have installed the addon set Thunderbird to work offline, so it does not download message body when you click in the list of messages.

  • TBird/gmail set up in 2012. Don't know what version of Tbird. 2 days ago gmail IMAP connection stopped. Need help bad!

Since my account Gmail is free, I am only able to perform an Internet search for the suggested corrections, and so far nothing has helped. I probably truncated my problem more far in trying, since I am a layman, not a true geek. Not even close to a geek.

Everything worked well, for the last 3 years, until Tbird has started to request my password frequently. Provide it not worked; change he did not; following the path of the suggested error didn't work, re - try leads to the message that IMAP has been disconnected, which seems to be typical of the stories online that I read, but I'm not smart enough to fix it. You try to run a non-profit of the current situation is extremely frustrating. Please help, someone...

Since the version of Thunderbird 38 uses OAuth2 for authentication of Gmail accounts. It is the only way to be considered "safe" by Google. http://TechCrunch.com/2012/09/17/Google-OAuth-2-0-for-Gmail-and-talk/

You need to change the "authentication type" "OAuth2' in the account settings of Thunderbird for your Gmail account.

In the top right of the Thunderbird window, click the menu button > Options > account settings > server settings.

To do this, incoming and outgoing (SMTP) server. The outgoing is bottom of the list of Auditors.

The Windows Office live mail does support the rules of message for mailboxes IMAP mailbox?
If not, then someone can advise on alternative e-mail client which takes support the feature. I know Thunderbird that supports this feature, but Thunderbird doesn't have the feature of autofill dropdown as gmail address (where it lists all e-mail addresses containing the alphabets typed in any part of the identification of email).

  • I'm moving in IMAP to pop. I followed all the directions and get a GMail IMAP account, AND then a new folder appears called [GMail] (gray)

The [GMail] folder contains sent duplicate, Spam, folders etc. I can not delete or move or delete it even manually. It's outta here! Very frustrated!

Thanks for the link chist1. In my view, it is a 'feature' annoying. Here is my solution:
Yes, you can remove this annoying "feature"! Turn off labels "feature" for the boring [GMail] subfolders. Use a client and secure your e-mail on your own computer, not the web interface. Make sure you have all the special folders and a copy created on the directory root of your account. Choose THESE folders in the account settings in Thunderbird & not [GMail] ones. Move all the messages off the [GMail] folder. Do drag the entire [GMail] folder to POP Trash account & Delete. WENT.

  • I want to use Thunderbird without saving e-mails on PC. How is that possible?

I want to use Thunderbird without saving any email to a local folder in my PC.
Can you help me please on this?
    Thank you.

There are two types - POP and IMAP
You will need to login to your webmail account using a browser and select the option to use the IMAP forwarding Protocol - assuming that the option is available.

E-mail POP accounts can only access the server Inbox.
Emails are downloaded to your computer and stored in your Thunderbird profiles folder. So this guy can't according to your needs.

IMAP e-mail accounts provide a remote view of files and emails stored on the server.

You subscribe to view these folders. Then the headers are downloaded and when you opt for the display of an email, the email is downloaded in a temporary cache.

Subscribed folders that are synchronized, download a copy of the file and store it in your Thunderbird profile. But these files are constantly updated to reflect what is stored on the server.

Your best option would be to create an IMAP e-mail account, you sign up to see the folders on the server, but do not select to synchronize subscribed folders.

E-mails stored in your Thunderbird profile on your computer load faster than those that must be retrieved from the server each time.

Info on the synchronization, so you can see how to turn on or off.

  • Use thunderbird on several computers with data on server

I want to use Thunderbird on my network home/office computers with data on a central computer. For the moment, I need to use mozbackup to transfer data from my desktop computer to laptop, which is a pain.

    Graeme

As already mentioned, IMAP is the best method, but you can move the profile on the central computer folder and then have TB on each computer pointed to this location using the Profile Manager.

    http://KB.mozillazine.org/Moving_your_profile_folder_-_Thunderbird#Use_the_Profile_Manager_to_move_your_profile

Another method is to copy a profile on a network share and start TB with command line arguments that specify the profile.

    3rd point: http://kb.mozillazine.org/Synchronizing_mail_on_two_computers

There is a method of moving just the records of e-mail to another location:

    In/home /.

    $ nano remove-all - msf.sh

Type in the following 2 lines:

    1. ! / bin/sh

    To find. -type f-name * .msf-exec rm-f ();

    Save the file.

    $ -.

    1. chmod + x delete-all - msf.sh

  • I need to leave emails on the original email server and still be able to read e-mail using Thunderbird

When I read e-mails and delete them Thunderbird deletes the e-mail messages from the original server. Another user also reads emails, so I need to leave them on the origin server so she could be able to read also.

You use the POP or IMAP protocol?
Sounds like the last, and which is normal with IMAP.
