vDS to migration cold vDS

Is there an easier way to cold migrate a VM from vDS VDS service without removing the vNIC?

My current environment has 2 data centers physically separated with about 15 guests in each.  vCenter is configured with each data center physical with a single Datacenter/15-host Cluster and vDS defined for each.

The current process before the cold migration is to remove the vNIC (s), and then migrate the virtual machine to the desired location.  Is there a way to better or easier to do this?  My dvPgs exactly the same labelling would solve this problem?

For this kind of scenario, we have created the following workaround solution in our environment:

Create an additional vDS (we called it TransferSwitch), add all the guests of all the centres of data/clusters, but without any physical connection.

A migration process cold one cluster/datacenter to another then realized in three steps:

1. connect the NIC of the virtual machine to the TransferSwitch

2 cold migrate the virtual computer to the destination

3. connect the NIC of the virtual machine to the destination vDS

This avoids remove/re-adding NIC of the virtual machine and all the consequences (as a new device detected in the guest operating system, with a different MAC address).

You can create the right TransferSwitch temporarily for each VM migration, but we decided to keep everything permanently.

  • Migration cold trip via lan or san?

Assuming that VM moves to the data store CF on the same host or different host with the same access to FC storage shared... migration cold trip via lan or FC san?

If you change data on the same host warehouses, data are transferred through HBA.  If changing hosts but vm location does not change, it changes just the host on which the virtual computer is marked (e) on.  If you change hosts and data warehouses, it goes on network.

  • Issue of Migration cold very Simple...

    Hey guys,.

I'm relatively new to VMWare, infact, I take the vcp - 310 exam tomorrow, lucky me!  In any case, I have a very simple question, basically I can't find all the information on how to do a migration cold or in fact if it is the right solution to my problem.  I rebuilt my server ESX (3.5) and kept the VMFS volume local orginal up thanks to its VMs located on it.  Now, I want to attach them to the newly installed ESX, I can easily create new ones and add the drive but that is not the same, for example will be difference NVRAM, VMX, etc. files.  Is "cold migration" what I'm looking for?  Or is there another way I can fix this?

Thanks in advance for your help.

  • Make pseudo migration cold with free ESXi 3.5 VI Client?

Even if I used VMware products for years (Workstation, Server), I'm still pretty new to ESXi.  I started using the free ESXi with the idea to be able to live migration between ESXi hosts.  However, I then discovered that you can't do vMotion with free stuff.  No biggie; I probably don't need it anyway.  All I really need is the ability to move virtual machines between ESXi hosts.  I'd settle for migration cold.  However, after reading the article on migration in the basic manual Admin, it seems I have to use Virtual Center to be able to do.  Am I wrong?  And I'll take it, Virtual Center is not a free download.

But do I really need to Virtual Center to move virtual machines between ESXi hosts?  It seems to me that I could just use VI client to do a migration of the nickname 'cold '.  Is there something wrong with the following scenario:

    1. all VM files are kept on a central NFS server.

    2. I stopped the VM on HostA.

    3. Add the virtual machine to host b inventory.

4 remove the virtual machine from the inventory of the HostA.

    5. I turn the VMS on host b.

Of course, this is not automatic and not stupid, but it's free so I can't complain.

Thanks in advance for any information or advice you can give me.

No, and that's all a 'cold' vmotion is anyway...

  • Issue of Migration cold

When you perform a cold migration when starting from CD you get a prompt that shows "no available network connection. You want to update the settings of the network at this time. "

My question is when you click Yes, you get the options to statically assign IP, subnet, default gateway, and dns...

Here - would you enter the IP address of the physical server you are trying to migrate? or would that be a new IP for VMware Converter to connect to the network?

It depends on the operating system and the type/use of the system (e.g. domain controller, Exchange server,...).

Basically, you shouldn't ever hot convert a domain controller, because this will usually damage the AD. For Exchange of data bases, etc., you should consider to stop services to have a consistent state without open files.

  • Migration cold vcenter server VM to another logical data center

    My version is 5.0

I have a vCenter with multiple logical datacenters.

I'm under vCenter on a virtual machine on a host in a datacenter.  The SQL Server with the vCenter database is on the same host.

I need to move the two virtual machines to a different host in another data center.

All LUNS are accessible from both hosts.

I'm under standard vSwitches, not distributed.   The vSwitches on each host have exact same exchanges that are put in place.

Can I migrate successfully cold other guests off the power, remove them from the inventory, save them with a new host and power back on.

However I'm not sure how to migrate the vCenter cold and SQL VMs.

My first thought was to turn off the power, connect the viClient directly to the guests in question and delete them from the inventory on the current host and save them to the new host.

What I don't know is if the vCenter database will have a problem with the location of the machine since I do change out vCenter.

    Any suggestions?

    Thank you

Welcome to the community - you thought initial is correct since migrate is a function of vcenter but Word of warning make sure that you select Remove flexible financing inventory and not delete from the disk - remove inventory will remove form VM guests of stocks without deleting the VM disk shape.

There will be no problem with access to the database-

  • cold vsphere 4.1 - should migration take how long?

    Hello!

We begin the process of upgrading our hosts and components vSphere 4.1 to 5.5.  We have to increase the RAM on the hosts and therefore need to move some virtual machines between hosts.

Some of these virtual machines have no VM Tools installed, so they must be cold migrated.  Stop, migrate, restart, rinse and repeat.

I'll do some tests, but my previous experience on it's a little blurry.  Let's not storage, just the virtual machine.  I remember this will only take a couple minutes to complete.

What is your experience with this kind of cold migration how long does?

  • Cold migration of MSCS cluster node clients?

Work on the establishment of a MSCS cluster on 2 hosts.  The hosts are the ESXi 5.5 build 1892794.

My shared disks are RDM compatibility mode physical that I have attached to a second SCSI controller in physical sharing mode.

My cluster validation wizard is successfully completed.

However, if I turn off the guests, everyone migrate to a different host (with FC to the RDM LUN connectivity), turn on and then run the cluster validation Wizard error e/s disk wizard reports on tests of arbitration and failover.

I learned that when I see these mistakes I can unsubscribe the VMs, detach the storage from the host, restart the host, attached storage, re - save virtual machines, and then validation is successful.  However, it is a bit complicated and if I say lose a blade and need to put one of my guests node elsewhere, I want to do without the time and hassle.  Is this possible?

I know vMotion is not supported with the physical bus sharing, but this ban applies to cold (power off) so migration?  Or is this an indication that I screwed up my configuration?

    Any thoughts would be great.

    Thank you

    Here's what VMware has sent:

    =======================

-A virtual machine that has a ROW in a MSCS cluster connected in physical compatibility mode cannot be vMotioned.

-Even if you do a cold vMotion (stop the virtual computer, then vMotion), the ROW could be detected as vmdk and you may need to remove
She and present it back or re - enter as you mentioned.

-Best practices recommend Vmware are that - before the migration, remove the ROW of the virtual machine, and then migrate the virtual machine. Once the
VM was vMotion, then you can attach the RDM to the virtual machine.

Unfortunately there is no work around on this
    scenario.

    ======================================

So I guess the cold, you can migrate the MSCS cluster nodes but sometimes it does not work quite as well and so its best to remove the ROW before migration cold.

Thanks to all who have posted!

  • Traffic cold to migrate a virtual machine

    Hello

This statement is correct: "when I have cold migration a (engine off) vm local storage to a local storage of another of ESXi through vCenter ESXi, the flow of traffic through the management-traffic-portgroup, not the vmotion portgroup?"

This is because when I migrate a warm , no matter it is a vmotion or a vmotion with storage vmotion, then the flow of traffic through the port of vmotion group. This is the behavior I expect. But why is the traffic not through the vmotion portgroup as well when I do a cold migration? Or is there a bad configuration? But I have different ports on different nic groups and there are different subnets configured... and each port group has only one type of traffic affected.

I am just a student: what happens if I have a network vmotion 10 GB and a 1 GB management network? When you perform a cold migration, traffic will choose the 1-GB-connection slow? Everyone is to give all the bandwidth as possible for vmotion, but in this scenario, traffic passes through the management network? I don't know--in most cases, we do a vmotion or svmotion. But I was amazed when I detected, that things from traffic port management group and not group ports vmotion...

Is it really the behavior by default as described?

    Best regards

    Roland

Yes that's right - with migration cold, the data move on the management network and it is the behavior of traffic movement not through network vMotion as a Migration cold isn't vMotion - also as your shared storage is compatible with VMware Storage API or will not depends on if data remains on your storage network or public network you.

Also 10 GB I think is overkill for your vmotion network - it is designed to work with 1 GB.

  • Several cold migration via PowerCLI on data centers

    Hi all

Here's my problem.   I am trying to automate migration cold of the about 30 mV (obviously power off) of a data center to another in the same virtual Center.    I was able to migrate both through PowerCLI 1 VM by using the following script.  I used Onyx to help me with the basis for the script.

    $spec = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineRelocateSpec

    $spec.datastore = New-Object VMware.Vim.ManagedObjectReference

    $spec.datastore.type = 'Datastore '.

    $spec.datastore.value = "datastore-1672.

    $spec.pool = New-Object VMware.Vim.ManagedObjectReference

    $spec.pool.type = 'ResourcePool.

    $spec.pool.value = 'resgroup-4017.

    $spec.host = New-Object VMware.Vim.ManagedObjectReference

    $spec.host.type = 'HostSystem.

    $spec.host.value = 'host-4018.

    $spec.disk = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineRelocateSpecDiskLocator [] (1)

    $spec.disk [0] = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineRelocateSpecDiskLocator

    $spec.disk [0] .diskId = 2000

    $spec.disk [0] .datastore = New-Object VMware.Vim.ManagedObjectReference

    $spec.disk [0].datastore.type = "data store".

    $spec.disk [0].datastore.value = "datastore-1672.

    _this $ = Get-view -Id ' VirtualMachine-vm-4029'. "

    _this $. RelocateVM_Task ($spec, "defaultPriority")

What I'm trying to do now, is to use variables for the values of the data store, pool, host and Get-View to the virtual machine itself to run a migration of more than 1 at a time.  So here's what I tried to do

    to connect-viserver VCENTERSERVER.domain.local

    $vms = Import-CSV "G:\temp\scripts\relocate.csv".

    {foreach ($vm to $vms)

    $spec = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineRelocateSpec

    $spec.datastore = New-Object VMware.Vim.ManagedObjectReference

    $spec.datastore.type = 'Datastore '.

    $spec.datastore.value = $vm. DatastoreName

    $spec.pool = New-Object VMware.Vim.ManagedObjectReference

    $spec.pool.type = 'ResourcePool.

    $spec.pool.value = $vm. ResourcePoolName

    $spec.host = New-Object VMware.Vim.ManagedObjectReference

    $spec.host.type = 'HostSystem.

    $spec.host.value = $vm. ESXHostName

    $spec.disk = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineRelocateSpecDiskLocator [] (1)

    $spec.disk [0] = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineRelocateSpecDiskLocator

    $spec.disk [0] .diskId = 2000

    $spec.disk [0] .datastore = New-Object VMware.Vim.ManagedObjectReference

    $spec.disk [0].datastore.type = "data store".

    $spec.disk [0].datastore.value = $vm. DatastoreName

    _this $ = Get-view -Id $vm. Name

    _this $. RelocateVM_Task ($spec, "defaultPriority")

    }

Here's what my CSV file looks like.  I used PowerCLI for find the real ID for each object.

    Name, DatastoreName, ResourcePoolName, ESXHostName

    VirtualMachine-vm-4029,datastore-4557,resgroup-3694,HostSystem-host-3729

    VirtualMachine-vm-4030,datastore-4558,resgroup-3694,HostSystem-host-3731

Here is the error message I receive when you run the script

Exception by calling 'RelocateVM_Task' with '2' or the arguments: "the object has already been deleted or was not completely created.

    G:\temp\scripts\RelocateMOD.ps1:25 char: 23

    Any help is greatly appreciated.

It's one of the drawbacks of the Onyx, the generated code is endless.

There is no need to use the ID in the CSV file, simply use the names.

And there is no need to specify a data store for the vDisk if you migrating the data store even other files such as the virtual machine

    connect-viserver VCENTERSERVER.domain.local
    $vms = Import-CSV "G:\temp\scripts\relocate.csv" foreach ($vm in $vms) {
      $spec = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineRelocateSpec $spec.datastore = (Get-Datastore -Name $vm.DatastoreName).ExtensionData.MoRef $spec.pool = (Get-ResourcePool -Name $vm.ResourcePoolName).ExtensionData.MoRef $spec.host = (Get-VMHost -Name $vm.ESXHostName).ExtensionData.MoRef

      $vmObj = Get-VM -Name $vm.Name | Get-View $vmObj.RelocateVM_Task($spec, "defaultPriority")
    }

And your CSV might look like this

    Name, DatastoreName, ResourcePoolName, ESXHostName

    VM1, DS1, Pool1 ESX1

    VM2, DS1, Pool2, ESX2

  • What is 'Migration to cold with resettlement of the file'?

    Hello

I just read http://kb.vmware.com/kb/1005241 on the migration of virtual machines with attached RDM. The document states that the following is true when you are migrating cold with moving file.

When you are migrating cold a VM with RDM attached to it, the content of the raw LUN mapped by ROW is copied into a new hard to destination file, effectively converting or cloning a raw LUN in a virtual disk. This also applies when the virtual machine is not moving between ESX hosts. In this process, your raw LUN origin is left intact. However, the virtual machine is more reads or writes to it. Instead, the newly created virtual disk is used.
I just tested this and migrated cold a VM with vRDM attached to another data store. However, the vRDM has not converted to a virtual drive, but remained as a vRDM. Is the "Cold Migration with file transfer" something different than right-clicking on the VMS in vCenter, choose "migrate" then 'Datastore change' or 'change of host and data store '?
    Thank you
    Michael

    Hello

Glad to hear that it worked for you, yes the document isn't very desciptive processes to do it, the only reason that I know how to do it is previous experience.

  • Cold using vMotion migration between data warehouses

To perform a migration cold between 2 not the source ESX servers and the host ESX destination need to see two data stores?

I have a host ESX 3.5 with 1 data store called data01 and a host ESXi 5.0 with a data store called data02. Using vCenter to manage the two ESX host - what I want to turn off a virtual running on the 3.5 host computer and perform a migration cold, including a data store move to 5.0 host.

    Can this be achieved?

I am unable to storage area presented to the ESX host 3.5 to the host of 5.0 and also unable to storage 5.0 to 3.5 host.

The OP is talking about a cold migration.  In the scenario described, it doesn't have to be a shared storage.  As long as the migration cold remains in the same instance of vCenter, there should be no problem.
