Virtual and Exchange2007 Cluster networks

Hello

I'm currently in the planning phase of virtualization and the upgrade of our Exchange 2003 to exchange 2007 and the 2007 on esxi 3.5 version

I have 2 IBM x 3650 each server is connected to a SCSI Bay for storage.

The current (already in production) server has 2 network cards, the 2nd (new) Server 6 network adapters.

For the cluster (2008) GUEST OS, I need to assign 1 to talk on a private IP connection network card and 1 card network to talk to the local network. If the two guests were going to be on the same HOST, then I think it would be easier, but for redundancy they need to divide. I know what I have to do, which is assigned 1 network card PHYSICAL to a virtual network adapter on each server, which will be easier on the new server with more than 2 network cards, but on the NIC 2 would be the server, network adapters are associated, so I still would be able to send the private link to down one of them?

The servers are connected to a stack of Cisco, and I got 2 configured ports in a VLAN private for private sign, with a port as a trunk so that he can speak both the LAN and the private VLAN.

I just need a little help in the implementation of the virtual network adapter to the network card physical environment and apply on the HOST servers.

Dave

Create a Virtual Switch.  Assign a NIC (that is not in use).  Then, assign him VM to the virtual switch.  That's close enough, you can do from the VI Client software, command line not involved, it's all the gui.

  • Random virtual machines after vMotion and Storage vMotion network loss

    Hi all -

    I have a couple of tickets open with VMware and our supplier of SAN, EqualLogic, on this issue.  Since the configuration of our production and DMZ clusters we noticed that the virtual machines will sometimes drop network connectivity after a successful vMotion and Storage vMotion.  Sometimes, although much less frequently, virtual machines also spontaneously lose network overnight.  What happened only a few times.  The strange thing is that the other guests on the VM host are fine - they lose any network.  Actually, I can do no more than 3 computers virtual host to another, and 2 of 3 can switch correctly, so that we lose the network.  The work around?  Simply 'disconnect' from the virtual NETWORK card 'reconnect' and the virtual machine will start the return packets.  I can also switch the VM troubled return to the host State and it will find the network.  I can it reboot and re - win network.  I can re - install the virtual card completely, and she re - win network.

    VMware has seen a lot of mistakes of SAN in our log files in order to update us our SAN firmware to the latest version.  That seems to have fixed that but we still have the issue.  Here are some of the specifications - all environments are virtually identical except for memory:

    Of PowerEdge R810

    NICs Broadcom 5709

    EqualLogic SAN running 5.0.5 F/W

    We use frames.  ESXi is fully patched.  I haven't seen a boss or not, it is only some guest operating system that loses the network, but we are a Windows environment.

    When a virtual machine loses the network, we can not:

    • Ping to it
    • Ping it
    • Ping him at the virtual machines on the same host or vSwitch
    • Ping outside our network
    • resolve DNS, etc..

    I followed some KBs VMware without success, including:

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1003839
    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC & externalId = 1002811 (port security is not enabled)

    -All the VMware tools have been updated to the latest version correct and corresponds to the ESXi host
    -Connected to the service ESXi console, I cannot ping the VM problem by name of host or IP address, but I can ping do not affected by the issue of the OTHER virtual machines.  I can also pings the service console.
    -Connected to the troubled virtual machine itself, I cannot ping other virtual machines, I can't resolve host names, I cannot ping by IP.  The machine virtual CAN ping itself by IP, but not hostname.  I cannot ping other virtual computers on the same virtual switch or network by either IP or host name.  I can't ping the vSwitch network management.
    -All vSwitches are configured in the same way and the same.
    -Notify the switches is set to yes
    -There are a lot of available virtual ports
    -We tried the E1000 and VMXNET virtual cards with no difference.
    -All cards are configured to negotiate, but we tried to force individuals speeds as well as with no difference

    I appreciate your help.  I have problems getting anywhere on this issue with the sellers.

    Sometimes, it might be useful to really check that all uplinks VMNIC for all VLAN does work them. Try this is to create a new portgroup on the vSwitch used by your virtual machines on the host of the first, put a test VM on the portgroup, then go into the NIC teaming policy from the new portgroup and select "Override switch command failover."

    Then down vmnic all except one in unused, then only a single VMNIC is active. Then set the portgroup VLAN to a production of VLAN and try to see if we could ping some expected from the different addresses. If it works, then move VMNIC work until unused and move up to another asset. Try again, and this for all the vmnic. If it works, then you have verified that the configuration of VLANS and other settings are correct on the physical switch in the face of this host ports.

    If several VLANs, repeat the process for all other productions VLAN. Then repeat on the other hosts.

    While that may take some time, occurs if everything is properly configured on the physical switches. When occurs a vMotion virtual machine gets a new "Port code" and is assigned to a new outgoing VMNIC. If there is an error of configuration on one or more physical ports that might seem random, but may still happen on VLAN x on y VMNIC. Given that Port ID policy you use indeed spread randomly VMs on the vmnic these problems may be difficult to diagnose. (Make a disconnection of the VM vNIC gives the virtual machine a new port-ID, which it will move to a new outgoing VMNIC, which might seem to solve the problem.)

  • Cluster VI3 and vSphere Cluster (migrate virtual machines)

    I have a VI3 and vSphere cluster.  Could I just drag-and - drop my virtual machines to the new Cluster or do I have to upgrade the virtual machines ' hardware of the v4 to v7?

    Thanks in advance

    1. you don't have to upgrade the virtual machine hardware, it is optional.

    2. you do not have to create new cluster, simply upgrade existing by-host. Virtual machines with hardware v4 can be VMotion'ed between 3.5 and 4.0 hosts

  • VMotion and grouping of NETWORK cards to a single virtual machine?

    You use them NOR allows the parallel VMotion for VM.

    A unique virtual machine enjoy a network of bulk VMotion?

    It would be logical for VM; s with large RAM configurations.

    Not a single virtual machine can never enjoy HASH IP nic teaming because the "source ip" and "destination ip" is always the same for each ip packet.

  • Virtual and physical network map

    My goal is to use PowerCLI to digitize all my hosts and introduce myself with a host name, vSwitch, PhysicalNic attached to vSwitch, physical switch name and the card NETWORK connected to the Port. I understand how to get all the data except the vSwitch are the NETWORK card on the use of this script.  Can someone help me to wrap it?

    Get-VMHost | Get-View | {ForEach-Object
    $VMHost = $_

    The script uses a hash lookup table what vSwitch is a teddy bear.

    It is my humble opinion, easier than watching this info each time.

  • Needs inventory of local network VIRTUAL the virtual computer for each network adapter

    Hello

    I'm looking for VLAN VM inventories for each network adapter, the script lists the following details at the exit of the CSV file.

    VMname |  Cluster name |  Name NIC-1 |  Name of VLAN. NIC name-2 |  Name of VLAN.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hello

    $(gkulikowski #08: 15:06 > get-vm | %{$clustername = ($_ | get-cluster) .name; $_ |}) Get-NetworkAdapter | Select @{N = "Name VM"; E={$_. Parent}},@{N='Cluster'; E={$ClusterName}},NetworkName,@{N='NetworkCard'; E={$_. Name}}}). Export-csv-path c:\out.csv

    but it will be output that

    Name of the computer Virtual Cluster NetworkName card
    -------                         -------                                      -----------                                  -----------

    So if you have more than 2 NICs for you will see them as well. not in the form of columns but as rows.

    OK, and if you want to have in the columns, I wrote like this:

    $(get-vm testgk | %{$clustername = ($_ | get-cluster) .name; $ntwkcards = $_______ |}) Get-NetworkAdapter; » » | Select @{N = "Name VM"; E = {$ntwkcards [0].} Parent}}, @{N = "Cluster"; E={$ClusterName}},@{N='NetworkCard 0'; E = {$ntwkcards [0].} VLAN Name}},@{N='NetworkCard 0'; E = {$ntwkcards [0].} NetworkName}},@{N='NetworkCard 1'; E = {$ntwkcards [1].} Name}},@{N='NetworkCard 1 vlan'; E = {$ntwkcards [1].} NetworkName}}}). Export-Csv c:\out-file.csv

    It will be the exact release you requested.

    'Virtual machine name', 'Cluster', 'Map' 0 '', 'Card 0 vlan' map 1 ","map 1 vlan.

    You mentioned the name of vlan, so I guess that you think of the name of portgroup.

  • Microsoft NLB and after vMotion network connections

    We have several hosts ESXi (4.0) one of them containing a virtual member of a NETWORK 8 Server Load Balancing cluster.

    When I migrate all servers to host containing the Member of NLB cluster virtual that I can no longer connect to one of the other 7 members. But the strange thing is I can reach any other machine on this host as well as not been transferred there recently (I don't know what triggers it)

    The migrated machine can reach any other machine not in the NLB cluster.

    The cluster is located in multicast. and is in the same subnet as the other servers.

  • Report on the ability of virtual machines VMware Cluster

    We started to evaluate Foglight for capacity planning and evaluation. One of the reports that I believe is interested in our leadership is the "ability of virtual machines VMware Cluster" report. I see that the report provides a value for the VMS remaining. I would like to learn a little more about this value and how is it calculated:

    1. What exactly a 'virtual machine' represents in these reports?
    2. Can a similar report to run using a specific type of server based on the allocation of resources or patterned after an existing VM wokload?

    We are a small, medium and large VM offering based on the allocation of resources. I would like to change the report to display the number of each type of virtual machine I have available... or pointer pointing to an existing virtual machine, and according to its resources and workload, determine how this server, I have available.

    It is based on the average size of the virtual machine in the cluster.  If you look at the dashboard of capacity management in the user interface, it can give you more details by cluster.  It is based on the average of the use of min/max/AVG across all virtual machines in a period given (usually 90 days).  This can not be changed today, but there is work to allow lets you specify a size of slot for something as small, medium, large, etc...

    This feature exists in the Foglight for virtualization, however Standard Edition.  It might be interesting to watch this, if you need it sooner.

  • Recommendations material and tips for network client 100

    Hello

    We are currently looking at creating a wireless network separated very basic for a client in two adjacent large cabins (3 m of distance) that can support up to 100 clients max simultaneously. It will only be for entrepreneurs to access basic internet, web mail, etc. connections. There is no existing infrastructure to connect to, so let's look at an internet connection for a form, a small switch and the wireless network. Range isn't a problem because they are next to each other it's support for such an amount of connections. I thought that a cluster of 2-4 WAP321 configuration might be a little tense and we could get questions like the number of simultaneous connections gets nearly 100. I also watched a couple of standalone Aironet 1600 s, one in each cabin.

    The network itself is very basic, because it is literally just shared internet access but I need to make sure it is reliable with 100 connected clients.

    I rang pre-sales tech, but they were not mcuh help and sounded like they knew less than I, so any help would be appreciated.

    Concerning

    Harry

    Dear Harry,

    Thank you to the small community of Support Business.

    By checking on the WAP321 data sheet, I see:

    -Recommended user support-up to 32 users connective, 20 active users

    -Active clients by cluster = 80

    I agree with you when you say "could be a little tense and we could get questions like the number of simultaneous connections gets nearly 100", that's why I suggest you go for a business, a range like the Aironet1600 input device you mention.  In any case I would contact you the pre-sales team or support thread-mobility advice and a community helps further.

    Thank you for your time on this matter and please let me know if there is something I can help you with in the meantime.

  • Can this load balance and HA cluster with vsphere?

    Hello community!

    Really new on this type of subject, so forgive me if IAM iam do or say something wrong. I'm here to try to understand better this amazing tool so I apreciate your time and knowlodge!
    Im trying to create a failover and balancing cluster with Vsphere, the goal is try to install an MSSQL DB server where the customer can access more quickly and do not have downtime when a node is down.

    I read a lot but still I can't have a full understand abt, so if anyone tries to explain something, please be patient and explain with precision.

    All doing wrong if you really work at home as a LABORATORY, and I can do it, hurt trying to use it to get a job because I don't have and I really need one soon!
    Here is my diagram is possible?

    Diagrama Cluster HA-DRS.jpg

    Well ill to explain it, I have clients that will send a work for my DB load process, which will affect on MSSQL Server installed on the 12 TB logical drive created from the union of all methods virtual storage. Each virtual storage is just a virtual disk created on a virtual machine that is hosted on the physical server (node).

    So I have 4 physical server which have 1 VM each with 3 TB of virtual disk, the goal is the customer can send the process of workload on 4 nodes to have a quicker response, and if a single node fails for any reason, the other node can operate withow problem.

    physical server Medley: don't know yet if I have to use one or install VMWARE directly.

    Sagna VM: Windows Server 2008 (don't know if necessary or if I can just install SQL Server directly)

    MSSQL Server VM: 2008 Enterprise (still don't know if I have to use this one)

    Well I can't think right now on the other details, but if you tell me ill be happy to write it.

    Sorry if my writing or semantics is false but English is not my first language.

    Really thanks to get to this point and share your knowlodge!

    Best regards, josh of Argentina!

    Josh, please correct me if I'm wrong, you have 4 knots of MS - SQL, and you need to read/write at the same time in a shared database of 12 to.

    If this is the case check the following documents:

  • Virtual network editor - virtual DC leak on network

    Hello

    I created a laboratory to test of windows server 2008 in vmware workstation 11. I put the custom virtual network adapter:

    virtual network editor.jpg

    I've got 2 VMs - windows server 2008 and win7. I tied VMnet2 both of these machines and created the field and join a windows 7 virtual computer to the domain. Great! but I have 1 problem. I put my IP to domain controller: 192.168.123.10

    But I can ping this address of the host (laptop) machine. is this normal? I thought about creating above network settings would completely isolate the physical network. Did I miss something or wrong configured network? I don't want the virtual network of VM fleeing somehow to the physical realm. I can't risk having 2 DCs on the network.

    ping.jpg

    so simple answer was watching me in the face. Just had to untick "connect an adapter to the virtual host on this network.

    For those looking to implement an isolated test lab windows domains, these are the settings you need.

  • Help to connect two virtual machines to internal network

    Hi all

    I have 9 of VMware Workstation, and I installed two identical WinXP VMs. I put them both on the same custom netowrk (VMnet3) setting. In the virtual network on my Win7 host editor I updated VMnet3 'Host-only (connect VMs internally in a private network)', and I have left empty the box "Connect an adapter to the virtual host to this network".

    What I'm trying to do is to connect the two virtual WinXP only between them, a small connection internal, so that a VM could ping on the other virtual computer, but cannot connect to my Win7 (real internet) host.

    Now both show WinXP that they are connected (the icon of the internet with two small screens is there), and they both have an IP assigned. However, does not ping one of them to another IP address.

    Any ideas?

  • VM list name and the cluster that it flows in a CSV file

    Hello

    I want to have a created CSV file that will conaitn 2 fields: vm_name, vm_custer

    Which means, I want to list the name of the virtual machine and the cluster is running in a CSV file.

    Here is the code I wrote:

    #! / usr/bin/perl - w
    use strict;
    Use Data::Dumper;
    use VMware::VIRuntime;
    My % opts = (data center = > {})

    OPTS::add_options (%OPTS);
    OPTS::parse();
    OPTS::Validate();
    Util::connect;
    "open (my $FH, ' > ', 'final.csv') or die" cannot opne final.csv: $! » ;
    print $FH 'VM_Cluster, VM_Name, \n ";
    my $dc = Opts::get_option ("data center");
    My $dc_view = Vim::find_entity_view (view_type = > 'Data center',)
    filter = > {name = > $dc});
    My $clu_views = Vim::find_entity_views (view_type = > "ComputeResource")
    begin_entity = > $dc_view);
    my $cluster foreach (@$clu_views)
    {
    My $clu_name = $cluster-> name;
    my $hosts = $cluster-> host;
    foreach (@$hosts)
    {
    My $host_hash_ref = Vim::get_view (mo_ref = > $_);
    My $vm_view = $host_hash_ref-> virtual machine;
    foreach (@$vm_view)
    {
    My $vm_hash_ref = Vim::get_view (mo_ref = > $_);
    My $vm_name = $vm_hash_ref-> name;
    $FH print $clu_name. ", ".  $vm_name. », «. "\n" unless $clu_name = ~ m/0bld0 /; "
    }
    }
    }
    Close ($FH);
    Util::disconnect;

    Now, I get the CSV file created as I wanted to, but the question is, there are 3500 + VMs in vCenter and this script side took 50 minutes to complete. It is therefore a huge performance impact. Also, I don't like the concept of 3 layers netsted foreach loops.

    Therefore, there is an effective way to get this information?

    Thank you.

    Your welcome.  It could be made faster, but the complexity of the additional code is probably not worth if the runtime you have now is enough.  No doubt, you can add additional data to your report without too slow.

    You can also find the script works faster or slower depending on what is happening in your virtual center system.
