virtual machines are named as unknown (not valid)

Hallo,

I run ESX 4.1 and vCenter 4.1 on Win2003.

I need help after that I run a security script on my esx servers, after you restart the ESX ESX Server does not detect all the VMS correctly.

Some not detected machines and this is bad it detects the vcenter4.1 and its only sql server as unknown (not valid), so for the moment I can only connect each ESX Server it self but not for the vCenter :-(.

See the screenshots.

Some of the virtual machines on storage are very good and I could 'add to the inventory', but this damaged machines see you in the screenshot number two do not have the opportunity to "add to the inventory" and also, you see the icon before the .vmx is not visible.

It looks like that some how the vmx. the files are corrupted?

What can I do? There is some repair auto or auto currupted file cleanup tasks?

Best regards

Dirk

Hello Dirk,.

You can try the following:

-> Poweroff invalid virtual machines

-> remove inventory

--> Ensure that nothing of the invalid virtual computer processes are running on the host computer (ps auxwww | grep-i vmx and vm-support - x)

->, restart the services on the host management

-> add them to the inventory

If this does not work, you can unsubscribe the VMs and create a new VM containers, but instead to create a new virtual disk, you will point to the existing VMDK.

Let us know how it goes...

    Hi all

I hope that someone has experienced this condition and can help.

    Here's what I have.

I have 13 VMs (Windows-based) I did some tests with the help of EMC RP DR. All servers in a group to ensure consistency with the two LUNs. I was able to failover of the environment on the site of copy and then restore to the original location.

However, today when I didn't return the case I lost 4 virtual machines.

-J' have 9 virtual machines I see in vCenter Server

-The virtual machines that I've "lost" are running, and I can connect using RDP, but they do not appear in vCenter Server

-Virtual machines are in their records in their data warehouses. When I find the appropriate folder and try to add to the inventory, the option is grayed out. Which suggests that the VM is saved, but when I search I do not see the instance.

PowerCLI command revealed that the two Mas I have 9 powered on virtual machines. Like I said all 13 virtual machines are running.

I asked each his vmInventory.xml of the host in the cluster file servers registered on all hosts are 9 instead of 13.

I have not disassembled the DS during operations of RecoverPoint failover, power off just the virtual machines.

Fortunately, this environment is not in full production, but which is the right thing.

Someone at - he encountered this rather odd situation.

If relevant, Bay storage is EMC VNX and access is any block.

  • Virtual machines are not able to access the network after you have moved the host

We moved our 4 ESX host to a different physical switch and now our VMs cannot access the network.

I can access the host via client vsphere.  Our host has 2 network cards.  They are both members of the vSwitch0.  I have 1 VM network defined, and they are both members of it.  The network adapters, vmnic0 and vmnic1 are also part of my VMkernel which I do not know that I need because I have 1 ESX Server and do not use iscsi or NFS.

the two cards are also part of my service console.

According to my host "configuration / display: vitual switch, it looks like all my virtual machines are defined to use the vswitch."

the two physical network adapters is connected to the same switch.  I did not go to any configuration on the switch.

    Welcome to the community,

It sounds as if the physical switch ports are not configured correctly. Please check that port security is disabled on the switch (switchport mode access) ports and spanning tree portfast is (if any).

  • All virtual machines are dead

Hi, I discovered today that all virtual machines on my ESXi 4 has been arrested.  There are balls I can check what happened?  4 virtual machines are all CentOS 5.5 64-bit and very lightly loaded (IE TOP shows 0.1 for loading).  There is no more validation of CPU or memory.

You can... How to do this depends on your configuration... For example, if you use vCenter or not. If this isn't the case, then connect to the host, go to the tab "Configuration", under the heading 'Software', ' Virtual Machine Startup/Shutdown ' select and then click on the 'Properties' link (top right of this window)... This is where you can select the VM power on with the host country, what order they put under tension, or if they "Manual start" value when the host starts.

If you do the settings on the host computer, vCenter will extract these settings in the configuration... I would suggest testing to confirm that the auto-start settings stick when you vMotion a computer virtual to another host (if you have more than one host) or not.

  • What concurrent virtual machines are launched to start the failover or failover test

    Hi friends,

What the simultaneous virtual machines are started when the failover or failover test is started?

6 virtual machines are cocurrently recovered or the number can be configured?

    Thank you.

    Hello

The number of virtual machines simultaneously recovered was 2 virtual machines per host up to a maximum of 20 virtual machines with MRS. 4.x ( http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/VMware-vCenter-SRM-WP-EN.pdf document "Best Practices" 18 States, but I have seen 20 myself several times).

With SRM 5 the number is unlimited by default (http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/srm5-perf.pdf, page 13), but can be changed (overall or specific cluster): http://blogs.vmware.com/uptime/2011/10/working-at-the-edge-of-srm-5-limits.html

history: this particular comments works fine; I've done about 30 shots

during the last 2 months.  The guest is not a copy - even if she did start life as a full-clone

another linux-client with or without an operating system installed.  In any case, I've used it to very good

    effect for 2 months now.

So last night I wanted to power off of the host, while I lived my usual steps:

    (1) stop my os of burst (# shutdown - h now)

    (2) even worksation vmware (file - & gt; exit)

    (3) stop start vista (not "suspend" but the real stop turn off the power).

    (4) visa bluescreened.  Now she is doing this every so often, so I thought that it would be

    a big deal.

    (5) this morning I tried to turn on the virtual machine and I got the 'not a virtual disk' error.

My best guess at this point is the bluescreen stopped some write cache to be

flushed to disk.  The funny thing is, after the previous bluescreens 3 or 4, the

Comments to restart without a hitch.

shrug In any case, just to be weave, I disabled write Vista for outside cache

Last departure also seems to succeed?

As it seems that instant 36 is not used so far - I was just going to throw it away and try again.

To do this, you would change the line vmx file

    scsi0:0. FileName = 'suse11.2_x64 - cl1 - 000036.vmdk.

    TO

    scsi0:0. FileName = 'suse11.2_x64 - cl1 - 000035.vmdk.

and then try to restart the virtual machine. If that works then remove all the

    suse11.2_x64 - cl1 - 000036-* files

The directory structure still seems to be on the disk.  Is there an easy way to get vSphere to recognize?

    Welcome to the community,

I guess you Install accidentally selected rather than upgrade! Anyway, you can just browse the data store and do a right-click on the .vmx file each VM to add the virtual machine to inventory.

  • PowerCLi script to check if 2 virtual machines are on the same host

    Hello

I'm nubby on PowerCLI and I would like to help in the construction of a script.

The script should check if two virtual machines (named test1 and test2) are running on the same host in a vCenter and send a notification (email), if they do.

Something similar with affinity / anti-affinite DRS rules (but not through the DRS enabled on vCenter).  My focus is on the affinity. In case this happens, I need vMotion one of them on an another ESXi host(manually or automated).

What I have done until now is the following:

    Get - VM | Select Name, @{N = 'Cluster'; {E = {Get-Cluster - VM $_}}, '

    @{N = "ESX host"; {E = {Get-VMHost - VM $_}}, '

    @{N = 'vCenter'; E={$_. "(ExtensionData.CLient.ServiceUrl.Split('/') [2]}}, '"

    @{N = "Datastore"; {E = {Get-Datastore - VM $_}} | `

    Export-Csv - NoTypeInformation C:\Scripts\file.csv

That becomes all the VMS and export a CSV file information:

Thanks Jim - this was incredibly useful. Exactly the details I need to make choices about how to proceed.

Has taken the question, let: VM has when fails to resume because of the CPU compat, is there a way to know exactly what are the characteristics of the .vmss requires that the host cannot satisfy?

If you enable debugging for the virtual machine, you should see something like the following in the vmware.log file:

I am committed to experimenting with the approach you suggested, just masking off post-Westmere and assistance of '-' for everything else. But for now, just need to understand what is happening with our current masking.

    Thank you!

  • Dedicated network adapter to the virtual machine and the host computer not let can visit his profile

OK, here's my question, I know how to give themselves a phyiscal nic to a vmware, but I wanted to take it one step further and do not leave the host send or receive data from this network card, only the virtual machine can use this network/NIC...

Here's my reasoning, I have to network conections, one is for my internal/field network and the second is a direct connection to the internet (Comcast) I don't want to use to separate the machines have for internet connection, I want to be on the same machine phyiscal and have just the vmware machine talking to comcast... is it possible?  I am running VMware workstation 7, last update.

    Thank you

    Cdrshm

I assume you are using a Windows host?

    If Yes...

-first set up networking networking with vmnetcfg.exe

-assign vmnet0 to the network card for the internal network

-assign vmnet2 to the network card used for direct access to the internet

-Right-click on the map network-icon in the systray and access the properties of the network adapter for vmnet2

-Disable all other protocols and the Protocol of vmware_bridge for this network adapter

result: a virtual machine that uses vmnet2 can directly access the internet and the host has no IP address for this network adapter - and therefore cannot use it.

  • Working in a virtual machine of shared folders and not another...

Hi, I'm new to the community but have worked with VMWare Workstation for about 9 months now. I have a set of 5 VM that I run on a regular basis, and I had successfully implemented the shared folders in each VM to a central folder on my C: drive host. I now have new versions of several of the virtual machine and I am trying to configure access to the same shared folder, but it will not be displayed.

After you set up the information in shared folders in the virtual machine settings, I go into the virtual machine on my computer and expect to see under readers network, "Shared Folders on .host '. Who does not appear and when I try to map a network drive to //.host/Shared files /, it can't find the network.

I compared the parameters between a virtual machine that has the Shared folder working and one who does not work, and I can't seem to find any differences.

Here are some of my system details, if it helps:

VMWare Workstation Version 6.5.2 build 156735

Host of OS = Windows Server 2008 (64-bit)

    VM OS = Windows Server 2003 (32-bit)

I've updated the VMWare tools in the virtual machine

I have ideas of what I can try to get this working. Thank you!

Try to upgrade the virtual hardware version 7 - maybe it does.

Why don't you use the entries for the disks in cluster? -of course, you know that they are not stable in WS 6.5

  • Multiple virtual machines are with merging different accounts...

I have a partition, Bootcamp with Win XP SP3. Fusion (2.0.4) is configured to run a machine virtual of Bootcamp. When we go to Fusion from an account other than the account used to set up the merger, it is always built a new virtual machine and applications to reinstall VMWare Tools.

I don't know if this is related to the fact that each user has now several virtual machines listed in the merge Panel, some black, some grey. Some of these virtual machines start and the one who would start applications the VMWare Tools install.

Could be a permissions problem? If so, what folders/files should be given permission for different users? Thank you.

    OS 10.5.7 (Nvidia graphics)

    MacPro 2008

Normal file according to the Virtual Machines have a glance at the 'Sharing of Virtual Machines between users' section of the VMware Fusion A Beginner's Guide.

For the execution of the partition Boot Camp in a Virtual Machine, it is a bit different because where the virtual Boot Camp Machine score is and cannot be moved as normal file based on Virtual Machines.  The location of each are covered in the first part of the document of A Beginner's Guide to VMware Fusion .

So it's normal and EXPECTED that the library Virtual Machine to each user account will be filled with a virtual Boot Camp Machine partition and will be treated as if it has not been run before the first time it is run under a particular user account.

There are a few options however none are configured via the GUI only merger and one, must be given full access to the files of one user home needed to give permissions for a given partition Boot Camp Virtual Machine instance that everyone would then use and would disable the ability to merge to automatically assign the Boot Camp partition entry on each virtual Machine library Virtual Machine user account from the user account and then just manually complete virtual of the user account of the user account library of machine with Boot Camp target partition shared Virtual Machine.

By changing the name of the rawdiskCreator-vmware in a Terminal (/ Applications/Utilities/Terminal) copy of the file and paste the following command, as is, and then press enter and type your password, and then press Enter and the Boot Camp partition appears is no longer automatically on the Virtual Machine library automatically under a newly created user account. and the opportunity to delete the automatically populated user account entry existing Virtual Machine library.

    sudo mv "/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/vmware-rawdiskCreator" "/Library/Application Support/VMware Fusion/vmware-rawdiskCreator.bak"
