Virtualization on ESXi

I am currently evaluating different hypervisors to see that best meets my needs and would be very happy of all advice on how well ESXi can manage desktop virtualization scenarios.

  1. What is the free ESXi 5.x support the virtual graphics card 3D edition? Or is this feature only available in the paid editions of vSphere?
  2. What are some good ways to access a virtual machine intended to be used in a virtual office? The "Console" tab in vSphere Client will work? Or y at - it another software that must be installed on the client computer? The reason I ask is because Remote Desktop and VNC both provide a poor user experience.
  3. What is the experience of virtual desktop with Microsoft RemoteFX? Also, how is it compared to the (local) virtual machines running on the desktop or from the merger?

Finally, it is not directly related to virtualization, but VMware maintains a list comparing the features available in each edition, including the free edition? There is a list comparing the paid editions (vSpherecompare the editions of server & amp; amp;) Virtualization in the data center. United States), but I have no idea how these editions stack against the free edition (or to put it another way, what I won't have access to by going with the free edition instead of the paid editions).

  1. Graoucs 3D acceleration support is a feature of view VMware Horizon and this requires that a licensed version of ESXi.You can learn more here - http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/techpaper/vmware-horizon-view-graphics-acceleration-deployment.pdf. If you do not need 3d graphics, you can still use the free version of host virtual dekstops.
  2. VMware View horizon is designed for virtual desktops, and provides methods for accessing virtual desktops based on the AD for authentication. If you are just looking for workstation virtual host, you can use the vSphere client but I would not recommend using the vSphere client as access method that this will put a burden on your host ESxi the preferred method would be to use RDP to access virtual desktops. I'm surprised your had a below-normal with VNC and RDP performance both in my experience have worked well.
  3. There are a number of factors that affect the end-user experience particulalry resources available to the hypersiro and the number of virtual desktops - my experience if the environment has been properly size the experience will be entirely satisfactory. Comparable machines, virtual office accommodation on ESXi will offer a more enjoyable performance.

This document will provide some of the differences between the free version and the paid versions - http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/vsphere_pricing.pdf.

For the moment, I have a unique stand-alone HP Z820 workstation.

If I decide to upgrade to a new computer HP Z840 independent, I will be able to install, configure and use ESXi/ESX/Vsphere on it and install top one, two or more systems of guest OS designed to run simultaneously, without having to connect this workstation Z840 even temporarily on another computer, separate console or network?

There are two types of virtualization-

    1 bare Metal virtualization-

ESXi is a virtualization software, have you install directly on the physical server from bare metal hardware. ESXi is very compact.

Then to manage ESXi host and create the virtual machine on ESXi host, you need a system more to run vSphere Client or use client Host.

ESXi directly access physical resources, which improve the performance of virtual machines.

    2 hosted virtualization-

VMware workstation is a hosted type virtualization software, install you it on any system Windows or Linux and then create virtual machine on it.

Windows underlying system provides material resources to virtual machines created in workstation that's why you get no good performance of the VM as compare to ESXi

Today VMware workstation 12 perform as well, if you simply create VMS to test or purpose LAB VMware workstation will also work.

For good performance, then you must ESXi host at least a Client system to manage ESXi and VMs.

  • Minimum hardware requirements for ESXi 5

    Hello

I am a newbie of virtualization and ESXi so please help me on these issues:

I intend to host 1 Windows 2008 Server and 1 Pfsense on the same host with ESXi. The two servers to serve a small number of users (less than 10). The Win2k8 runs just small .NET application and the just Pfsense will act as a router/gateway for web portal (without VPN, nothing complicated here).

I checked the minimum requirements for VMWare ESXi here (KB VMware: minimum system requirements for installing ESX/ESXi) but still uncertain before buying new equipment to run ESXi because the specifications said ESXi only works on 64-bit x 86 CPU.

    I'm looking at this PC:

    CPU: Processor Intel® Celeron® 1037U (2 MB Cache, 1.80 GHz)

    RAM: 8G RAM Support memory DDR3 2 G / 4G / 8G / 16G, DDR3 1333 / 1600 MHz

    Storage: 64G SSD

ESXi will install OK on this system?

    Thank you

    Hello

Intel http://ark.intel.com/products/71995/Intel-Celeron-Processor-1037U-2M-Cache-1_80-GHz CPU specs this should work in general, but can cause performance problems as this Celeron has only 2 hearts.

Another thing to consider is the RAM, ESXi 5.5 OS takes about 4 GB of RAM on the 8 GB leaving you 4 GB for VMs Windows 2008 with less than 4 GB wil be quite slow and sooner or later begin to swap to disk.

Also the motherboard used is something check with HCL as at the storage controller and connect it on Board should be compatible.

The road easier to go is to get the material at the level of the server that is listed in the HCL, you can find systems awarded new/used being fully compatible. It would be much more reliable than the construction of a whitebox on office equipment system.

then you can also make a backup of the vcenter.

If you like VDP vmware or veeam backup solution, you can just a backup of all the virtual machines...

    Thank you.

    A.

Cluster of features such as vMotion (live migration) require processors from the same provider, supporting a common mode of EVC.

Where did you read that the AMD need hosts two processors? Currently I'm not aware of such a requirement.

For pure and for training automatic tests, I installed VMware ESXi 5.0 as a virtual machine inside a VMware ESXi 5.0 host (physical).

How can I configure the network interface to allow the VM ESXi?

Is there a best practices document to configure VMware ESXi as a virtual machine?

Basically, all you have to do is to allow mode promiscuity on vSwitch physical hosts, which you connect virtual ESXi hosts. Make sure that virtual ESXi hosts are configured with the virtual "E1000" NETWORK card adapters

I need to know the hardware requirements for this solution?

You need at least 8 GB of RAM: host about 5 for both, at least 1 for the NAS and enough for your host (in my humble OPINION, I would suggest using a 64 bit distro Linux).

But also think about buying a cheaper server and allows you to virtualize your ESXi environment.

  • Startup to virtualization... What is the best solution to connect to ESXi?

    Hello;

I started on virtualization and have some simple doubts on how to move forward... I hope someone can help me... (I hope I'm using the right forum to ask this question).

I tested VMWare, and, so far, I made just a few steps:

1.-j' VMWare ESXi (hypervisor) installed in a server.

    2. - I can connect to this server of VMWare ESXi with my Windows machine vSphere Client, and I created on the VMWare ESXi server a machine Suse Linux, I can use a lot of my windows machine and the software installed on it in vSphere Client.

So far, everything is Ok, but I would go further:

3 - I would like to be able to connect to this virtual machine for Linux on other computers, we (Windows, Linux)... And now, it's when I start to mix all the solutions and products, I prefer not to install the vSphere Client in all machines, because I'm not all machines to be able to administer virtual machines, but only to 'use ':

I found there is a VMware View Agent, but I have failed to connect to my virtual Linux box, because after I installed on my Windows Machine, on the first screen, I put the IP address of my Linux virtual machine and get the message "unable to connect to...". ». I think it is because I have not installed the VMware discover the connection to the server... The truth is that to begin with, I don't plan to do more than 10 virtualized machines, therefore, I would like to avoid a solution where I have to install more software in addition to machines...

... And that's when my doubts:

    4. - what would be the most simple solution to connect to different machines to my newly created Linux box and 'use' VMware (not use)? (other VSphere Client to avoid someone administer my VM).

5 - if I could use this solution on Windows and Linux? (Even better if I could use this solution to replace the operating system of the different machines and allow the machines just to start and connect to the virtual machines, because some machines are old, and I would like to re - use as a computer thinclient, in which, at the start, only will be apear icons of different machines to connect)

    Thank you!

    Alberto.

Welcome to the community - just treat the VM as you would a physical machine - connect via RDP, SSH etc - which you could do with a Windows machine or lelievre

See VMware Virtualize your desktops - that would be the solution to answer your question 5 that you could use a workstation as a terminal Wyse to allow a user to connect via AD and connect to their virtual office.

  • How to create on multiple ESXi virtualization?

Hi, I am a newbie in virtualization, and I would like to create a virtualization like this:

I use Dell m620 Blade Server, using the generic Server SAN using Openfiler OS.

I tried to install ESX on each blade, but VMware client can only connect to a single server at a time, and I can create virtual server only in a single machine. I was also connected with the ESXi iSCSI. I went through the tutorial on this friendly virtualization, but could not find those that describe the steps in detail.

y at - it those who speak the VM technology could share knowledge for me. Thank you very much

    Hi Dhie20,

    Welcome to the forums.

You must have VMware vCenter Server to manage multiple ESX servers and create a virtual infrastructure complete. Without this central management application, you can not your hosts work together to create a cluster to support hardware failures or balancing for example.

    It will be useful.

  • Benefits of virtualization from Citrix on ESXi 4 Server?

    Hello

We will implement Citrix Server on a DELL PowerEdge (unrelated to FC SAN) server offline.  Citrix consultant suggests us install ESXi 4 on the DELL server before you install Citrix.  He says that he will facilitate the backup task.

We wonder if there is any advantage to do?

    Thank you

    Tony

    Hi Tony,.

Several environments means in a single ESXi server, you will be able to create multiple virtual machines by using resources of maximum server rather than use the physical server and just use resources from 20 to 30%.

If your citrix deployment is large scale and requires many users to connect and many applications published, then you can opt for a physical server, but if the installation of citrix does not involve so many users (less than 50) and virtual environments should work fine with you. With virtualization, you can also save your citrix VM and in the cases of corruption of failure all you need are the power on your backup citrix server. Usually, I make a copy of all my production virtual server after all the applications are installed and licenses are applied because it saves time later, when corruption or failure occurs.

  • Because of the Extensions of virtualization ESXi MANDATE Intel, what other products?

This may seem obvious, but I already said x 86 virtualization extensions to improve the performance of the virtual machine, but are not required to run virtual machines.

I installed ESXi 4.0 on an HP Proliant DL380 G4 of second hand.  The processor specifications are as follows:

    2 x 3.40 GHz

    800 MHz front side bus

    2 MB of L2 Cache

Cela rising site Intel here: http://processorfinder.Intel.com/list.aspx?ProcFam=528 gives me a shortlist of 3 processors, which none have 'Intel virtualization technology'.

I have managed to install ESXi 4.0 without problem but cannot install Ubuntu Server Edition on a virtual machine, as it says I need a disc compatible i686.  (I tried both 32 and 64 bit discs without result).  However, I am able to boot from the drive natively without all these error messages.

In the BIOS of the machine, I can find no mention of virtualization extensions, so I am lost to what is the problem.

If this is the case, are there any alternatives for me to virtualize this machine? (i.e. ESXi 3.5, ESX)

    Thanks in advance

It takes on hosts for 64-bit clients Intel VT - x.  See KB 1003945.  VT - x is not required for 32-bit clients.  This is true for all VMware virtualization products.
