    Only one 1 antivirus/security suite applications should be installed & loading at startup at any given time. Since you do not know what free trial could come preinstalled on the computer, I have to have executed the two removal tools in the steps below.

    1. Uninstall Avanquest System Suite 10 & reboot. [1]

    2. make sure that the Windows Firewall is enabled!

    3. download the Norton Removal Tool, save it to your desktop: ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/english_us_canada/removal_tools/Norton_Removal_Tool.exe

    3 b. download tool McAfee Consumer Product Removal, save it to your desktop:http://download.mcafee.com/products/licensed/cust_support_patches/MCPR.exe

    4. close all open applications (that is, anything with an icon on the taskbar).

    5. click right on the file you saved in # 3 above and select run as administrator to run the utility. DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then reboot again.

    6. click right on the file you saved in # 3 b above and select run as administrator to run the utility. DO TAP not your keyboard until the race ends, then reboot again.

    7. open Internet Explorer (only) to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058 & run the difficulty in DEFAULT then AGGRESSIVE modes. [2]

    8 restart once again & test.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    [1] I'll tell you right now that Avanquest applications are notorious for not properly uninstall. Unfortunately, there is not a removal tool that I know.
    [2] full Disclosure: the difficulty operating in AGGRESSIVE mode will remove your update history but not the list of installed updates.
  • Restored Vista will not install updates
    I have an old laptop (from 2008 or 2009 I think) with Windows Vista. A few weeks ago, I restored the computer to see if it would be a bit faster still.
    But after restoring I have big problems with the installation of programs. I was able to install Firefox and antivirus (Avast) with no problems, but other programs - such as versions updates to Adobe Reader and Flash player and Libreoffice - will not be installed at all. I can download files facility but when clicking on it nothing happens. I checked the Task Manager, so they are not running in the background.
    I also face similar problems with Windows update. It is stuck on the installation of Vista SP1. It is said that the installation can take a large amount of time and it may restart the computer several times, but what installation it goes very fast (without rebooting) and said that the installation is complete. But when you search for new updates of SP1 is still there and not installed.
    Hello
    Many programs will not install unless you have SP2, as part of their minimum requirements for install.
    Click Start > right click on computer > left click on properties > see if you have Vista 32 bit or Vista 64-bit installed.
    It will also tell you which SP you have installed.
    Then, choose the download of 'bit' OK to use to install Service Packs, installation of SP1 first if it is not already installed.
  • Windows Vista will not install updates.
    I came across Best Buy, bought the first thing I have seen & to the left. It's just the small things. My main PC is myPC music recording studio (never online) so for my this, that I bought... I don't care.
    a m9402f 7.00 GB 64-bit system quad-core 2.30 Ghz procesor.  On the 626 GB on the 'C' drive, I only used GB 129.  I don't know why I've bothered w/a Seagate external extreem HD 1000GO?  Works great, I've never used one before Vista but works very well.
    Thus, recent updates do not keep install .  What's up with the updates? What is happening with this? Should I just go buy Windows 7?  I spend hours looking for solutions and never ask for help, but this time I am so tired so I'm going to ask.  Below are updates that keep a failure... Notice they're on SP2 * and IE8. My PC alread had installed SP2.  I tried an update for this.  I have switch from IE 7 to 8. I don't see any other reasons.
    Maybe I'm missing something?
    A LOT of these updats were on UPDATE SP2 which was on my computer when I bought it, but they do not work...
    Others have to do with the "compatibility issues" for 32-bit web sites.
    .. and yes my stuff Adobe, Flash and Java are all kept up-to-date too.  Please keep in mind, I know how to get to these files support and update history and try to update manually and with each of them, the research questions and check forums, so I spend a lot of time doing this.  A lot of information is not new.
    Speaking of a new VISTA user...  My C drive has a file that says "Program Files (x 86) and this is where I go for all.»  What is it? It was my first VISTA computer. So forgive me... I'll tell you something about the music industry, but forgive me this ignorance.   Other folders have programs in the files of "program" and identical named files... What is so special about this (X 86)... I'm in 64-bit and sometimes still in 32 bit? capacity?
    My computer is compatible for Windows 7... should I go and buy and put an end to this? I could put it apart for just photo software stuff... Let me see it done 7 computers in the House.  sheeesh! Thank you... it's me now to lock up.
    Hello, I run the servers at my work, and systems are 64-bit.  It would be just that sometimes your system needs to do things differently running 32-bit.  Not sure why they choose to divide them, but that's how it is on my servers.
  • Windows Vista will not be updated to Service Pack 2 with the access denied 0x80070005 error
    I bought a new computer, and it came with Windows Vista Home Basic SP1. I've updated every day and a great success until this. When I tried to install after pressing accept on the license agreement screen, when it says computer preparation. I get an error indicating that the Installation has failed. I also tried some work around and find myself without success. So far, I turned my (even uninstalled), kaspersky internet security ran system update tool, disable most of the startup process, reset the permissions in my registry and created a new user with privileges to administrator, but when I access the user created recently, after the box at the top left corner that says personilizing (in the classic windows theme) need me just a blue screen error-free. But I can still access the Task Manager and its been like that since.
    And I also did an accesskchk command that noted:
    Hi webchikk61,
    ·         Did you do changes on the computer before the show?
    ·         (Numbers KB) updates you install?
    Follow these methods.
    Method 1: Temporarily disable the security software .
    Note: Antivirus software can help protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. In most cases, you should not disable your antivirus software. If you do not disable temporarily to install other software, you must reactivate as soon as you are finished. If you are connected to the Internet or a network during the time that your antivirus software is disabled, your computer is vulnerable to attacks.
    Method 2: Put the computer in a clean boot State to see if there is a software conflict as the clean boot helps eliminate software conflicts.
    Note: After completing the steps in the clean boot troubleshooting, follow the link step 7 to return the computer to a Normal startupmode.
    Method 3: You can also manually install updates (KB number) by downloading from the Microsoft Download Center.
    Hello... my computer will not install update KB2378111 with a code error 80070570.  In addition, I can not install all programs downloaded from the internet, specifically my anti-virus software.  I'm running without any software antivirus at this time.  I ran the most recent Microsoft malicious software removal tool and it showed that there is no problem.
    HOW to do a clean install of Vista: see the "to install Windows by performing a clean install" (or "reinstall Windows Vista") http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-vista/Installing-and-reinstalling-Windows-Vista article
    NOTE: If your computer came with a set of disks, there is a hidden partition restore (not to be confused with the restoration of the system) you would use to do the clean install (AKA a "destructive recovery").
    After the new installation, you will have the equivalent of a "new computer" in order to take care of EVERYTHING on the next page before connecting the machine to the internet or one local network (i.e. other computers) AND BEFORE to plug in a flash, SD card, or any other external drive to the computer otherwise:
  • Vista will not start! Black screen, no mouse, no cursor pointer. Startup Repair cannot repair. Details say 'wrong pass '. What is the correct syntax for pkgmgr to uninstall?
    Vista will not start!  Black screen, no mouse, no cursor pointer.  Startup Repair cannot repair.  Details say 'wrong pass '.  It looks like all the files are well intact on the disk.
    What is the correct for pkgmgr syntax when you try to uninstall an update by using a command prompt when starting Vista OS disk?  I entered the following in the "x:\Sources >" prompt:
    start /w pkgmgr/o: "C:\; /Up:Package_1_for_KB2840149~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~6.0.1.0 C:\Windows.
    When I run this command it ends quickly and when I run 'echo %errorlevel%' I get '5', which seems to mean 'access denied'.  How am I supposed to have access to remove the patch?  Am I missing something?  Perhaps a switch in the syntax to access?  Help, please.  Thank you.
    I tried both options that you recommended.  As initially stated, no boot option would produce something other than the black screen.  I tried to boot from a drive and restoring the system running, but she didn't, and when I tried to do it again the recovery console could not find restore points. ?.
    An update, the computer is now fixed.  Oddly enough, I ran recovery of starting a drive at least 8 times and each time I checked the details and he said: he ran chkdsk without error and return to the same cause "a patch is preventing windows to start.  I even ran chkdsk c: /f from a prompt command from the recovery disk and it found no errors.  That's when I posted the question above after trying to remove the patch in the manner described above.  After some time and frustration, I decided to run chkdsk /r c:.  It took awhile, but it found 1 bad sector, moved the data, the bad sector tag and finished.  Once I restarted from that, everything came and went very well.
    So, the original question remains, what was missing in the command to run pkgmgr/high: successfully.  And the new question exists as to why start Recovery claims run chkdsk if it does not, or he turns the version/f not the version/r the same as I did manually?  It would be good to know for the future.  Thank you!
  • "Error message: Verifing DMI pool Data data ', 'Boot from CD' and Vista will not start.
    Vista will not start. Yesterday I had a remote assist of a tech trade SPS who took several Java updates and installed the recommended Java version. Until I left work the day I closed my computer so that he could install the updates from Microsoft. After the updates were finished I he turned and left for the day. When I arrived this morning, I had was a black screen and 2 lines of text following: 'Verifing DMI pool data' and 'Boot from CD' and a cursor flashing beneath them. I downloaded and executed a Western Digital utility that showed no problems with the hard drive, put in on the installation disc repair service is no error. I did a system restore to a point since yesterday morning, and Vista still does not start. Any ideas or suggestions?
    Hi JohnHorky,
    Step 1:
    First check and make sure that all physical connections on the computer are correct.
    Step 2:
    Alternatively, you can try to run a Checkdisk and check.
    a. Insert the installation disc.
    b. restart your computer.
    c. click on the Start button, click the arrow next to the button lock and then click on restart. If you are prompted, press any key to start Windows from the installation disc.
    d. choose your language settings, and then click Next.
    e. in the System Recovery Options menu, click command prompt
    f. at a command prompt, type the following command and press ENTER
    Chkdsk /f /r X: (drive letter)
    Note: When you run the checkdisk, there are risks of data loss you can take a backup before starting the checkdisk.
    g. press y when you are prompted to check the drive the next time the system restarts.
    h. close all applications and restart the computer.
    Note: When you run the disk check, there are chances of losing data if you can take a backup before starting the checkdisk.
    Step 3:
    Check if the automatic hard drive in the BIOS (Basic Input/output System) is enabled and save settings and check if it works. If it doesn't, contact the manufacturer of the system for more support options.
    I also suggest that you install the latest update of the basic system of input/output (BIOS) on the computer by contacting the manufacturer of the computer and check if it helps.
  • Vista will not display description of the file on mouse over. File name, Type, size, and Date modified see the upward, but no description.
    Vista will not display description of the file on mouse over. When I mouse over, a pop-up window displays showing: file name, Type, size and Date of change, however, it does not show the description of the file.
    So, for example if I have 5 files on different types of screw - the description tells me that the size of the screws. IE. 1.5 mm or 1. 8 mm.
    Update: try to get the description of the file displayed messing around in the file properties, now out of 10 records, only 2 includes the name of the file in the mice on the pop-up window. So now what lack us, it's the file name and the Description file.
    Help, please...
    Description of the file in as long as this is not one of the available variables, which can be shown with ToolTips - but there are others who could easily serve the same purpose. Here are the options:
    Here is an article on how to change what is shown. http://www.ghacks.net/2008/02/10/customize-windows-explorer-tooltips/ . It is to change the registry, make sure you so first back it up before doing anything so that you can recover in case you make a mistake (or do the right thing, but it does not work as expected). http://www.instant-registry-fixes.org/how-to-backup-windows-vista-registry/ .
    I hope this helps.
