VM with a snapshot of 900 GB!

Hello everyone!

Some information:

(1) we use ESX 3.5 Update 4 with vCenter 4 Update 1 on Netapp Storage connected via NFS for the ESX servers.

(2) I have a Win2K3 VM who had a D: drive which was a 900 + GB hard disk that I migrated all the files to a connected iSCSI volume.

(3) before I migrated the data, I took a snapshot of the VM, has added improved iSCSI vNIC and it configured in the operating system. And an another snapshot was taken just in case.

4) 900 + GB of data has been copied to the iSCSI volume.

(5) VM has been turned off to remove the 900 + GB D: drive.

(6) VM power and using the iSCSI ok disc.

Unfortunately I forgot to commit 2 shots... and a month later, I noticed that the VM is projected in vCenter as having an instant 923 GB!

The tab view storage for the cluster shows the size of the snapshot!

Research in the computer virtual folder, the delta files are not nearly this big:

Looking at the volume via the console, files do not display a snap 900 GB:

So vCenter think that the virtual machine has a 900 GB snapshot because I removed the 900 GB D: drive hard file in the VM properties?

I really don't want to wait for 3 years to commit this snapshot!

So, theoretically this VM has only really Go 2 x 3 buttons pressures correct? And shouldn't take very long to engage, if she?

Ideas as to why please VCenter think this VM has a large snapshot?

You must be really happy to know that you do not have a 900G instant. Commit (Group) the other two instant you can clone the virtual machine that is the safest way.

    someone you encounter this before?

very appreciated for your reply, thank you

I heard that maybe it's a bug in the installer to point 5.2.  There is a configuration where the deposit app.config file can use a connection string to the database while an individual model uses a different.  It is required by SQL Snapshot isolation not use DTC and thus multiple connections with different channels causes this error.

It is a requirement that the templates that are installed matches the repository web application configuration in the web.config file.  This should be validated at run time, but it seems that our Installer does not validate this...  I suspect that this happens when the web model manager is installed with sql different information identification and then the Manager of model data.

Check the Repository.Website\web.config on the Model vCAC Manager server/s to the path \Program files 9 x 86) \VMware\vCAC\Server\Model Manager Web\ for the parameter below...

Make sure the server, database and the authentication setting that corresponds in the table below (case is important here too)...

    SELECT *.

    FROM [DynamicOps.RepositoryModel]. [Models]

Data Source = localhost; Initial Catalog = vCAC; Integrated Security = True; MultipleActiveResultSets = True

If they do not match, probably easier to manually change both to use iis authentication and restart windows, and check if the problem persists.  If this resolves the issue and you want a different configuration, laugh with the settings further and confirm the fact that it always works.

  • We can convert a VM with 2 snapshots directly

    Hi team

I have a vm with 2 snapshot server and there are only 20 left GB in storage. My snapshot file size is 200 GB and we do not have enough space to remove the snapshot. I intend to buy 1 TB HARD drive and attach to my laptopp vm converter and install in my laptop, then convert the vsphere VM VM workstation file on my external HARD drive. My question is can you convert a virtual machine with 2 snapshots directly VM workstation, it will create another cliché of ESX server to do the conversion? If a snapshot is created more conversion will fail because we have only 20 GB free space. Please provide a good solution for this

I hope that everything will work as expected. Good luck.

BTW there is a snapshot on the virtual machine. Where did you see the other? If there is a difference between graphical snapshot Manager and user interface that you see in the browser to store data (files such as - 00000x.vmdk are instant), always approve the data browser store!

  • Trying to hot-clone VM with multiple snapshots

I have a virtual machine with two snapshots.  I need to make a clone of this virtual machine, and I want to clone the current state-based, not off a previous snapshot or the basic disk.

When I try to clone, compatility validation is to give the warning "returning to snapshot may generate error (warnings) on the destination host."

I'm curious to know what, if anything, will break if I continue with the clone?  I would like once again, the VM cloned to be based on the latest state of the virtual machine, not on a snapshot or the basic disk?  I thought that was possible?

    Thank you!

The reason for the error is that when you clone to another ESX host a snapshot (especially if it includes memory) may not work on the new host because it is based on the current hardware that is running the virtual machine (at the time the snapshot is taken) maybe not on that get back you to the snapshot on. Also all the files that make up the snapshot are not available on the destination virtual machine.

The best way is to simply validate snapshots and then do it. If this is not possible just clone and it will be based on the virtual machine running and you will have no problem.

I can use %d for these two orders with no problems:

    FORMAT 1 CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK MAXOPENFILES ' / var/backup/%d/dumps%d_%T_s%s_p%p.bus';

    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT for DEVICE TYPE DISK TO ' / var/backup/%d/control%F.ctl';

Then why can't it be used for snapshot controlfile?

On the snapshot Controlfile: when RMAN must resynchronize the catalog of recovery with a consistent read version of the control file, it creates a TEMPORARY snapshot control file. RMAN needs a snapshot control file when the resynchronization with recovery catalog or before you perform a backup of the current control file.

Why you should use variables in a temporary file internal?

RMAN does not have a snapshot unique to each backup file, RMAN automatically overwrites the file if it exists. You can use the same file and location all the time, for example ' / u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/dbs/snapcf_dborcl.f'

If I put the path snapshot controlfile to the db name hardcoded in the path, it works:

    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO ' / var/backup/IDB00246/snapcf_%d.f';

You have this file "snapcf_%d.f" not "snapcf_IDB00246.f" in "/ var/backup/IDB00246 / ', because 'CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME' does not support variables.

You must create a file snapshot controlfile name unique for each database.

  • Why have I not [VM name] _1.vmdk, _2.vmdk with no snapshots?

    Hello

I'm trying to consolidate my VMs to a small size file, so I can transfer them to a new server. I had a number of snapshots for a long time already. I deleted all the snapshots for virtual machine is flat. Then I looked at the files in the data store for the virtual machine. I see the big following files:

. [The virtual computer name] VMDK

    [VM name] _1.vmdk

    [VM name] _2.vmdk

All three have the same size, and all three are the size of the hard disk of the virtual computer. The virtual machine uses [VM name] _2.vmdk as the player.

Why are there three that seem to be three copies of the file hard drive? Is there a way to merge them so I have only a transfer?

no doubt alone is uptodate - the other two may have been replaced in the history of the virtual machine

  • problem with deleting snapshot

    Hi all

I had a preview of the virtual machine on a server esxi 4.1, build 320137

When I later (1 day) removed the snapshot (action to "remove all" in the snapshots in vSphere client Manager), I got an error saying:

    Delete all snapshots

    < myvmname >

    Cannot access the file

    < not specified

file name > because it is

    locked

    root

At this point is no longer the snapshot, according to the vSphere client as well as the command line:

    / vmfs/volumes/4cb6cf27-7 d 884680-68bf-00221965eca8 # vim - cmd vmsvc/snapshot.get 176
    Download Snapshot:

(176 is the vmid of my machine)

but in fact, the snapshot is always present, with delta 3 (one for each disc) of about 1 GB (it's a busy machine, with 1 disk 16 GB o.s.

and 2 200 GB, nearly full drives)

the question is: what can I do to merge the delta vmdk into their respective discs?

Or what I can do to create 3 new discs containing all the data, for example using vmkfstools

(then I'll replace it with these new old records in the vm configuration)

Operations can also be done in turning off the State without any problem (night...)

    Thanks in advance,

    Andrea

printing to see it regularly here :-)

First, take a look at the contents of the virtual machine or watch the vmx to check file that VMDK is being used.

one you have you need to consolidate the VMDK for this virtual machine must be downwards as in the contrary case, it locks files.

and then you start vmkfstools-i/vmfs/volumes/datastorename/vmname/vmdk-from-vmx-file new.vmdk

You will need to run it for all discs, you have on this virtual machine.

This will consolidate the VMDK, but this alters the 'old'. You must then modify the virtual machine settings and remove the old drives and add custom discs using the new vmdk, you created.

Once the virtual machine is running, you can clean the old files...

    Good luck

Yes. The reason why you need to take another cliché is only in order to activate the clear all"" button. Because we don't need the memory, you can take the snapshot without it.

I am relatively new to powershell scripting and even newer to the vSphere CLI. I have no problem reading and understanding scripts, but what makes one is another story.
