Vmotion Live 5.1 Esxi5.0

Hi guys,.

I have two Esxi host, one running 5.1 other 5.0 running two R710, but CPU models are different.

and unfortunately one running 5.0 CPU does not support the set of features AES-NI and for this reason, I can't vMotion to shift my virtual machines to another host.

I thought that vmware can support different hardware in terms of vmotion or I saw evil on youtube?

or is there another way around this problem?

Kind regards

PS:

This is what Dell Techy wrote me:

«I do some research and found that the processor that is on your server (E5530) is not supported for the AES function.»

Only 56xx series of processor is supported for the AES function. »

Cheque attached.

I was wondering if anyone has experienced symptoms similar to the following:

A guest VM (Windows 2008r2) CPU and high memory and is directly migrated to another host in the cluster. No migration of storage. Shortly after the event of migration is completed, any errors recorded in vSphere, near 100% CPU usage spikes, the virtual machine performance begins to degrade and must be restarted to return to levels of performance expected. We do not know yet VMware is the cause at this point, the load on affected customers is quite high because it is. We are trying to determine whether it is possible that migration on-line, exacerbates the problem.

I opened a ticket with support, but all they could do is check on our configuration of VMotion. We were able to reproduce the problem for them.

Thanks to all for the replies. I was finally able to reproduce the problem to support, and after digging around the support files vmkernel.log has determined that the problem was caused by persistent problems following an event all the paths downwards. They recommended that restart us the hosts that have been affected by the event of ODA. We have not seen a resurgence since the restart of the hosts.

Based on the VMware compatibility guide, two of these servers are ESXi 5.x supported. Although he said that the DL385 G7 needs 2 CPUs. Is this correct?

We do not have a lot of servers and according to virtualize, three ESXi servers be enough. Can I get an another DL380p of the G8 and have a cluster of two servers Intel ESXi based and a base of AMD server or all three servers should I run the same processor/vendor?

    Thank you.

    A.

Cluster of features such as vMotion (live migration) require processors from the same provider, supporting a common mode of EVC.

Where did you read that the AMD need hosts two processors? Currently I'm not aware of such a requirement.

  • Migration of servers to new host and SAN

    Hello

    Current configuration:

2 x ESXi servers, local storage, share nothing.  License of VMWare Essentials

    New configuration:

3 x SAN Eqllogic, ESXi servers. Essential Plus VMWare license

I would like to make the transition to the new configuration with minimal downtime, we have invited a few large (> 1 TB) on one of the servers and I don't want them to be disconnected for more than a few minutes, then a migration cold is out of the question.

I had a thought that I could put the license key more on the old servers and 1 new servers, set the new SAN on the old servers, use VMWare replication to replicate virtual machines among the old servers to the new server/storage, and then perform a recovery.

I would then remove this old Vsphere server, add a new server and transfer the license, then perform the same task on the old server to 2nd.

Once it is finished I remove the old server 2, add the new 3rd server, and move the license.

Can someone tell me if this is possible, or suggest alternatives?

    Thank you

    Dean.

    Hi Dean,

Replication (replication vSphere) VMware will be requires downtime when you are recovering from the old host to new host.

How much time can you afford for downtime?

The recovery process will turn off the source/protected VM on the current host (VM function how long it would normally take to perform a shutdown comments) and destination/recovery VM will be powered on to a new host (again, depends on VM normally, how long it would take for the operating system and services until then a normal diet on the process).

vSphere replication requires vSphere Web Client and other requirements, as described here: 5.5 - replication requirements vSphere vSphere Documentation Centre

    You have a vCenter Server?
What version of ESXi (and vCenter) do you use?

If you don't have a vCenter Server yet, I suggest you install a vCenter server and add all the current 2 ESXi hosts + 1 new ESXi host.

From there, you'll have an ESXi 3 host, then you can migrate current ESXi host for new.

If you are using vSphere 5.1 + you can vMotion, even if the host do not have access to the same storage see this: library of vSphere 5.5 - Migration with vMotion in environments without storage shared

Its quite simple, if you are using vSphere 5.1 +.

-Make sure you have vcenter Server 5.1 + with vSphere Web Client

-Add current hosts + 1 new hosts

-Make sure the vMotion without requirement for shared storage are filled with VSphere 5.5 Documentation Center - requirements and restrictions for vMotion without Shared Storage

-Perform vMotion without process Shared Storage of current host to the new host + local storage to SAN EqualLogic - you can start with small VM and VM less critical first if you are not sure.

-Once all virtual machines have been migrated to the new host + EqualLogic SAN, you can do a maintenance on the current host mode, and then delete the vCenter Server (vSphere licenses will be retrieved)

-Add the 2 remaining new hosts.

If you are using vSphere 5.1 prior, you must present the SAN EqualLogic again 1 new host and current 2 hosts.

Once current hosts can see the EqualLogic SAN, make a Storage vMotion (live migration records) local storage to the EqualLogic.

For first migration vSphere 5.1, there are 2 ways that I can think of:

    1. with vMotion - without interruption

There are certain requirements of configuration for vMotion work: Documentation Centre of vSphere 5.5 - Migration with vMotion

Make sure your classes and new hosts are run in the same processor / EVC mode or matrix, you can check it out here: http://www.vmware.com/resources/compatibility/search.php?deviceCategory=cpu

If they are on different EVC Mode, you can turn on the CEV on new hosts.

    The steps are:

S ' ensure that virtual machines are in EqualLogic (you can use Storage vMotion)

-Perform a vMotion from the current host to new host.

-Once all virtual machines have been migrated, you can safely do a maintenance on the current host mode and remove the vCenter Server

-Add the remaining 2 new hosts the vCenter.

    2. without vMotion - requires the interruptions of service commissioning

It's cold migration but without migration of storage, must be less compared to downtime directly cold immigration to localdisk of shared storage.

    The steps are:

S ' ensure that virtual machines are in EqualLogic (you can use Storage vMotion)

-Turn off the virtual machines in the current hosts and migrate (cold) of the host-to-host former New (you can also drag the virtual computer and drop it to the new host).

-Once all virtual machines have been migrated, you can safely do a maintenance on the current host mode and remove the vCenter Server

-Add the remaining 2 new hosts the vCenter.

  • Hot SvMotion from large SQL databases

    Greetings,

I had a few questions about the svMotion from a large SQL server VM. The vmdk is around 2 TB. The svMotion will take about 10 hours. I believe that, according to the white paper on the functioning of vMotion, the current state of the virtual machine is captured as the system changes during the virtual machine through a bitmap file.

I just believe in the magic that is vMotion, but wanted to get a better understanding of what is happening under the hood.

    1. What is this bitmap file, and where changes are stored?

2 - How is taken the vMotion and bitmap copy? Is it mainly a backup copy of the point in time of the VM/storage with incremental backups of the full backup once the vMotion starts? All of the incremental backup is then applied to the full backup once the VM/storage arrives at its destination?

    3. is there the _any_ loss of any SQL transaction on this 10-hour period?

    4. If there is no transaction drops, hash verification fails, etc. - how VMware detects and corect these errors?

    5. is there something that is regarded as too massive for vMotion live? An example might be a SQL Server with 8 GB of ram, 4 vcPU with 2 TB of data making 600 IOPS / s.

6 - vMotion is possible on a WAN? If so, what are the requirements of speed and latency?

Thank you in advance for your help!

    Tony

    Welcome to the community-

    1. What is this bitmap file, and where changes are stored?

For vmorion there is no bitmap file - the machine is suspended in memory is copied to the target host and the virtual computer is started on the target host.

With Storage vMotion - snapshot comes from the virtual disk, which means that the real virtual disk writes are redirected to a snapshot file that records the delta changes to the virtual disk

2 - How is taken the vMotion and bitmap copy? Is it mainly a backup copy of the point in time of the VM/storage with incremental backups of the full backup once the vMotion starts? All of the incremental backup is then applied to the full backup once the VM/storage arrives at its destination?

As I said vMotion does not bitmap - while Storage vMotion creates a snapshot of the virtual that saves any changes made on the disc - it took not the backup drive

    3. is there the _any_ loss of any SQL transaction on this 10-hour period?

    NO.

    4. If there is no transaction drops, hash verification fails, etc. - how VMware detects and corect these errors?

VMware does not check for those I know.

    5. is there something that is regarded as too massive for vMotion live? An example might be a SQL Server with 8 GB of ram, 4 vcPU with 2 TB of data making 600 IOPS / s.

For vMotion and SvMotion is as far as I know - the issue you are having with SvMotion and high IOPS / s is the Christ of the snapshot file.

6 - vMotion is possible on a WAN? If so, what are the requirements of speed and latency?

Yes vMotion can be done on the Wan, but latency requirements are rather tight - 10 ms latency roundtrip with Enterprise Plus -

  • The upgrade to vsphere 4 essentials for vsphere 4.1 essentials more with 2 servers?

I currently have a Dell 2950 III with processors x 5460 double hearts running vsphere 4 essentials and I am looking at upgrading on two servers with vsphere 4 essentials more with vmotion. How do I know if I can continue to use my existing 2950 and add a Dell R610 with two hexagonal x 5680 core processors? I want to be able to run most of my guests on the new R610 but power move them back to the 2950 (which could be changed during the upgrade) and if necessary R610.

    Thank you.

The only concern, you'll need to know is the processors for R710, R610, and PE 2950. You must ensure that enhanced Vmotion is supported for these inorder to three servers for vmotion (live migration) seamlessly.

I know R610 and R710 works, but I'm not sure what that generate a PE2950 you are referring. You can see the matrix here. http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=1003212 an another prereq is that all of these VMs must be in the shared storage and the shared storage is presented to all these 3 hosts.

    Laughing out loud

    It is unlikely.

Also, I thought that you might not? VMotion/clone? a virtual machine if she drives in 2 different places?

VMotion requires shared storage.  Local storage would be a problem if you tried to change hosts.

also would it be a problem if 1 store was running 3.2.1 vmfs and other store runs 3.31 and a v on each disc is used for the VM 1?

Lol this is explained in KB 1005325.

    Good luck!

  • vCenter/vSphere installation Questions

I apologize if this is the wrong community asking these questions in. I thought that the community of vSphere to be the most appropriate, but there is no category generic vSphere. The General category of vCenter Server was appropriate.

Our company is buying some matΘriel for vSphere 4. The cost to buy the Essentials most of vSphere bundle 4 we have budgeted ($5000) but I'm sure I can convince our Exec team to approve the purchase of vSphere 4 Advanced Acceleration Kit ($17000) once I showed them vMotion Live Migration and fault tolerance. That being said, I'm still new to vmWare and need a little advice products. Here are some questions I have.

    (1) my plan is to have the three physical hosts start their ESX/ESXi installation off our iSCSI SAN to avoid having to have local storage on each server. It presents an acceptable practice or if this is not preferred? Is there any loss of performance when the servers are running? Your advice here would be greatly appreciated.

    (2) I understand that I can choose between ESX and ESXi in my installation. I was under the assumption that ESXi is more than a low-end product (so the free version) however I read on VMware.com ESXi is the product preferred for new installations and ESX is available for legacy add-on products. Is this correct? Should I go with ESXi for three servers?

    (3) where vCenter Server move? It works on one of my three physical servers or need an additional server. I have no experience with vCenter Server, so I have no idea on this one.

    (4) would it be appropriate to install local disks on each server for the paging or swap file?

    (5) I'll buy Veeam Backup & Replication for backup. Does make a difference on the weather, I chose ESX or ESXi?

Thank you for all your advice.

You're right - if vcenter is down FT stops - but isn't that a problem is the first defective virtual machine at the same time.

  • SVMotion ERROR?

Hey guys I have a problem when I try a machine to storage vmotion live... I consolidated records in order to preserve max CAP VMDK migration errors and at the same time to find isn't a problem... This error persists regardless total VMDK?

"a general error has occurred: Storage Vmotion: consolidate online in case of failure: unable to open snapshot file." Must manually consolidate the records of the child ".

IM wandering what is at the root of the file snapshot in camera... what a permissions problem? There are chances that you would be able to configure this to allow a work around?

Currently, the files of virtual machines are spread over 2 data warehouses...

is there a way to force migration to successfully get the VMS source files migrated to the destination without restart or shut down the server?

    -rw - 1 root root 16820736 Mar 9 20:24 dmotion - scsi0:00_D - delta.vmdk

There is your problem.  You can't svmotion this virtual machine until the initial movement is finished.  You cannot complete until you put it down and complete the migration.  I understand that you want to do then that is upward, svmotion is a great tool, but unfortunately it is incomplete, and it must be complemented by the virtual machine offline.

That of why you have errors, instant are preventing this virtual machine migrating.  If you need get some downtime for this virtual machine.

  • ESXi 4: error in live migration (VMotion) to the different data store (Local SATA to iSCSI SAN)

    Hi all

I have a problem during VM migration live in the different data store, the specifications of the virtual machine is just Windows 2003 x 64 installed with the latest VMWare tools.

The active state of VM migration

any idea what could cause this please?

    Kind regards

Check that the machine ESX4 has prevention performance virtualization and data, indicators enabled in the BIOS. I could move 32 bit machines vmotion Unflagged VT turned on in the BIOS, but 64-bit machines could not begin until I activated the flag of VT in the BIOS.

Also try to clear the mask of the source of the VM CPU before migrating, providing the hosts have the same hardware.

  • Live VMotion with vGPU

Is a feasible direct VMotion with Horizon 6.1 and 6.0 vSphere assuming that both hosts have the same graphics card?

It depends on using vSGA Yes, you can, but if you choose the vDGA option, unless I missed something, you can't, take a look here: https://www.vmguru.com/2014/03/vmware-horizon-view-graphics-vsga-vs-vdga/

And view 6.1 documentation: 3D Rendering for desktop configuration

Because vDGA and NVIDIA GRID vGPU use pass through PCI on the ESXi host, VMotion directly is not supported. vSGA and 3D app supports direct VMotion.

ESXi does not support on your processor hardware-assisted virtualization.  If your processor is AMD - V, there was a design flaw with the first generation of AMD - V parts that we have chosen to not to bypass.  You will not be able to run virtual machines nested on this material.

ESXi 5.0 supports AMD - V only on later processors and family 10H.
