VMotion network

Hello!

I have a cluster of 4 servers; I don't have a GigaBit switch (this is just 100 MB)...

Can I use 6 NICs for each server. I want the network redundancy.

Until yesterday, I had 2 servers in the cluster, and I used 2 network cards to connect the servers by a couple to cross the cables. With the virtual switch connected to the team of these two network cards I put in place an internal network and the network of vmotion.

What is the best way to implement vmotion network in the new configuration with 4 servers? (I know that it would be best to buy a GigaBit switch, but it is not possible at the present time...)

I can implement several networks of "point to point" vmotion each between 2 servers?

Any help will be really aprecicated!

I believe that the best practice is to have the VMotion network, share the same NIC 2 as your service console, but do them using NIC primary opposite, with one for failover.

vSwitch0 will be groups of ports for the "Service Console" and "VMotion". Assign 2 of your network cards to the vswitch. Then for the Port Console of Service Group, assign 1 active network adapter, and the other in standby mode. Assign the nic opposed to active on the port VMotion group and use the rest of your network for traffic of comment cards.

    Our team has looked at the requirements of network speed for the VMotion network on an ESX Server.  Details to our environment, we are looking at a cluster of 8 knots with each ESX Server running over 25 virtual machines.  Given this information, a network of 1 GB for the VMotion network connection seems sufficient, or should we be looking at more closely to the provision of a connection of 10 GB?

    best practical vMotion is a network isolated from 1 GB - 10 GB would be a stretch the network is used when a vmotion event happens and if your environment is sized correctly I don't expect vmotion occurning more than a few times per hour - and based on your virtual machines per host, I would say that you will have a lot of extra capacity--

  • VMotion network interface

    We have a basic configuration of the two physical servers ESXi 4.1, both with two network adapters.

    Map 1 which I configured to attach to our normal local area network with a group of VMkernal ports with only 'traffic management' enabled.

    Map 2 I configured it to use a private vlan, with a group of VMkernal ports with active "vMotion" and "Fault Tolerance".

    I can ping through the VLAN that is private between the two servers.

    I expect ESX to use this vlan private when moving virtual machines between two servers, but I look at the statistics of network performance using the LAN interface.

    Is this expected behavior?

    Welcome to the community,

    What are you doing exactly? vMotion is the process of moving only the workload of the server to another host, leaving the virtual disks in place on the shared storage. If you're cold, VM migration (movement of the virtual disks) it will use the management network.

  • Random virtual machines after vMotion and Storage vMotion network loss

    Hi all -

    I have a couple of tickets open with VMware and our supplier of SAN, EqualLogic, on this issue.  Since the configuration of our production and DMZ clusters we noticed that the virtual machines will sometimes drop network connectivity after a successful vMotion and Storage vMotion.  Sometimes, although much less frequently, virtual machines also spontaneously lose network overnight.  What happened only a few times.  The strange thing is that the other guests on the VM host are fine - they lose any network.  Actually, I can do no more than 3 computers virtual host to another, and 2 of 3 can switch correctly, so that we lose the network.  The work around?  Simply 'disconnect' from the virtual NETWORK card 'reconnect' and the virtual machine will start the return packets.  I can also switch the VM troubled return to the host State and it will find the network.  I can it reboot and re - win network.  I can re - install the virtual card completely, and she re - win network.

    VMware has seen a lot of mistakes of SAN in our log files in order to update us our SAN firmware to the latest version.  That seems to have fixed that but we still have the issue.  Here are some of the specifications - all environments are virtually identical except for memory:

    Of PowerEdge R810

    NICs Broadcom 5709

    EqualLogic SAN running 5.0.5 F/W

    We use frames.  ESXi is fully patched.  I haven't seen a boss or not, it is only some guest operating system that loses the network, but we are a Windows environment.

    When a virtual machine loses the network, we can not:

    • Ping to it
    • Ping it
    • Ping him at the virtual machines on the same host or vSwitch
    • Ping outside our network
    • resolve DNS, etc..

    I followed some KBs VMware without success, including:

    -Connected to the troubled virtual machine itself, I cannot ping other virtual machines, I can't resolve host names, I cannot ping by IP.  The machine virtual CAN ping itself by IP, but not hostname.  I cannot ping other virtual computers on the same virtual switch or network by either IP or host name.  I can't ping the vSwitch network management.
    -All vSwitches are configured in the same way and the same.
    -Notify the switches is set to yes
    -There are a lot of available virtual ports
    -We tried the E1000 and VMXNET virtual cards with no difference.
    -All cards are configured to negotiate, but we tried to force individuals speeds as well as with no difference

    I appreciate your help.  I have problems getting anywhere on this issue with the sellers.

Given that Port ID policy you use indeed spread randomly VMs on the vmnic these problems may be difficult to diagnose. (Make a disconnection of the VM vNIC gives the virtual machine a new port-ID, which it will move to a new outgoing VMNIC, which might seem to solve the problem.)

  • Drops after vMotion network

    Hi all

    I have a problem with vMotion in vSphere and I was wondering if someone could help.

    I currently have 2 hosts which were entirely patches. I have 2 vSwitches. One for management (SC and VMK) and the other for the Virtual Machine. Each vSwtich has 2 adapters physical 1000FDX assigned. The cluster has active HA but DRS not activated and I don't use of FT.

    When I vMotion machines among hosts I loose the customary ping of the virtual machine, but also intermittently the VM gets disconnected for about 2-3 minutes. Probably to about 30% of my vMotions not this way. During this period, you cannot ping the server or anything from the ping server.

    I tried setting the port speed on the network cards on the vSwitch to 1000FDX, tried different vNIC on virtual machines (VMXNET2 and VMXNET3) but still the same problem, but not all the time and it doesn't seem to follow all of the grounds.

    At any come across this before, and how can I solve this problem.

    Could be a problem with your physical switches?

    Can you try to enable RSTP or FastPort?

  • COS backup and VMotion networks

    I am trying to create an additional vswif to act as a backup to vswif0 used to COS and VMotion traffic.  Once the vswif has been added in place, if something happens to vswif0, as the cable car, traffic passes automatically to vswif1 or should I use the two vswifs at the same time?

    Hello

    No you will not get redundancy the way you describe. A second vSwif will not suddenly take over the primary vswif, routing automatically will not change. Redundancy is built into the vSwitch using grouping of NETWORK cards. You don't need 2 vSwifs, only 2 natachasery attached to the same vSwitch to the SC or to which he gives the portgroup SC.

  • "Uneven" with HA/VMotion network configuration

    We run a pretty boring diet and simple where all access layer switches (A, B, C, D) are layer 3 to the base, local access layer VLAN is not available everywhere.  So all the VMS devices we have each of our 4, the cable 5,0 esxi hosts with a trunk on each switch:

    1 1 NIC - trunk to the switch "A".

    2 1 NIC - safe for switch 'B '.

    3 1 NIC - trunk to the C"" key.

    4 1 NIC - trunk to the switch "D".

    all 4 servers are in a cluster on HA (DRS off).  Everything works well and has been for about 9 months in this configuraiton.  We have now added switch 'e '.  The problem is that we cannot add network ports more guests to esxi 4.  What we thought to do was adding more ESXI hosts and wiring those to the 'E' switch and leaving one of the other four turns.  That leaves us with something like this:

    1. ESXi to shared resources for pass the "A" "B" "C" and "D".

    2. ESXi to shared resources for pass the "A" "B" "C" and "D".

    3 ESXi to shared resources for pass the "A" "B" "C" and "D".

    4 ESXi to shared resources for pass the "A" "B" "C" and "D".

    5. ESXi to shared resources for pass the 'A' 'B' 'C' and 'E' (resources shared E instead of d)

    6. ESXi to shared resources for pass the 'A' 'B' 'C' and 'E' (resources shared E instead of d)

    I don't have a lot of computers on the switch 'E' which should be virtualized, so I don't want to lose a lot of money on vmware licenses and hardware resources.  However, these machines are begging to be virtualized and I can't move switch 'E' or change their IP address.

    Is it possible to have all 6 ESXI hosts in the same cluster?  even if switching between ESXi hosts may not be symmetrical because 2 of them do not have the same network as the other 4 (or in another way, the other 4 do not have the same 2).  Is it possible to have a control over failover based on available on an ESXI host network?  In other words if I have a VM on ESXI 1 which must pass "D" it cannot fail to ESXI 5.6 because they have no switch "D." yet, a virtual machine on ESXI 5.6 can run out of 1,2,3 or 4 is on the switch 'A' 'B' or 'C '?

    With the help of rules of DRS to force your "E" and "D" VM VM to host correct is the only option that comes to mind, then.

  • Microsoft NLB and after vMotion network connections

    We have several hosts ESXi (4.0) one of them containing a virtual member of a NETWORK 8 Server Load Balancing cluster.

    When I migrate all servers to host containing the Member of NLB cluster virtual that I can no longer connect to one of the other 7 members. But the strange thing is I can reach any other machine on this host as well as not been transferred there recently (I don't know what triggers it)

    The migrated machine can reach any other machine not in the NLB cluster.

    The cluster is located in multicast. and is in the same subnet as the other servers.

  • vMotion VLAN\Distributed vSwitch Networking question

    I am facing a strange problem and was hoping someone might be able to enlighten. I have a vCenter cluster that contains 5 hosts. Four of the guests standard vSwitches and a host uses a distributed vSwitch. The four hosts who use standard vSwitches have a NETWORK card dedicated for vMotion network. The only host that uses the vSwitch distrubted has two NICS in a team. I followed the instructions listed here to set up the configuration (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 2007467)

    Three standard vSwitch hosts are able to ping to the active IP address for the host by using the distributed vSwitch while one of the hosts using a standard vSwitch is unable to ping the host by using the distributed vSwitch.

    If it was a problem with the distributed vSwitch or etherchannel configured on the Cisco switch for the collection of NETWORK adapters, I think that none of the other guests could ping the IP address, but they can. I also confirmed that the vMotion VLAN is configured on all Cisco switches and is to be shared between all hosts resources.

    I am at a loss to explain why a host is unable to communicate with the host distributed vSwitch on the VLAN of vMotion. Any help would be appreciated.

    The problem I was experiencing was due to an incorrect configuration. After talking with a technician from VMWare, he explained to me that you should not use a configuration of etherchannel on the switch that connects to NICs hosts vMotion. The reason relates to the policy associated with the map NETWORK load balancing team.

    For etherchannel configuration work, politics of load balancing for the NIC team must be defined, 'route based on IP hash. You are not able to use this strategy to load with vMotion NIC team balancing. The policy load balancing for a correct vMotion NIC team would be 'road based on the original virtual port code '. This is because a NETWORK adapter is active while the other is standby.

    After removing the switch etherchannel configuration and redo my setup according to the above referenced article, guests may communicate on the network of vMotion of appropriately. I asked VMWare technology if there is no indication as to why the three hosts were working while we were not. He did not have an answer and is surprised that these other three hosts were working with the configuration I had initially.

    Can someone help me understand what is vMotion network?

    If it comes to vCenter linked mode, this means that the network vDSs are migrated between vCenters when the vCenter fails?


    I thought that most of the work made by the switch hidden on the CDS of the ESXi server that does not migrate anywhere. ?

  • Single network or Multi vMotion Nic card

    Here are our current design for our soon vSphere 5.1 deployment

    There has a been a good bit of internal discussions on whether to use a single 10 GB for vMotion network adapter or use two NICs 10 GB for vMotion

    Most of the debate has been around "isolate" the vMotion traffic and makes it as localized as possible

    We all have the vMotion traffic is a vlan separate, vlan127 you can see in our design

    The big question becomes exactly where will the vMotion traffic? What switches/links it really go?

    Is this correct?

    1. If we start with a vMotion nic, then once that Vmotion begins traffic will be generated from the host lose the virtual machine and the host wins the virtual machine. In this scenario, traffic will cross a BNT switch. This leads to two conclusions

      1. Traffic is never as far away as the nucleus of Juniper
      2. vlan127 (vMotion) didn't need to be part of the trunk, go to the heart of Juniper to the TNB
    2. If we go with two NICs of vMotion, then the two 10GB network adapters might be involved in vMotion. This means that vMotion traffic between two hosts ESXi could hit a switch BNT, browse the battery connections (two 10 GB between the BNTs connections) and go to another host via a network card. GB 10 it has also led to two conclusions:
      1. Traffic is never as far away as the nucleus of Juniper. He remains isolated on a single switch BNT or moves between BNT switches through the two stack 10 GB connections
      2. vlan127 (vMotion) didn't need to be part of the trunk, go to the heart of Juniper to the TNB

    vMotion traffic is just unicast IP traffic (well good, except for some bug) between ESXi configured for vMotion, vmkernel ports if all goes well insulated in a non-routed layer 2 broadcast domain (VLAN). Simple as that. Considering that the traffic will cross physically regardless of the physical NIC is configured for the respective vmkernel ports. The path between the two is obviously depends on the layer 2 switching/STP infrastructure, which in your case would be just the blade chassis switches.

    Multi-NIC vMotion essentially implements several independent streams between different IP addresses and MAC, belonging to the same host. Consider the following:

    Host A and B with vmk1, using physical vmnic1, connected to physical pSwitch1 and vmk2, using vmnic2, connected to pSwitch2. The two pSwitches directly the trunk the VLAN vMotion between them.

    If the two hosts have only vmk1 is enabled for vMotion, traffic will never pass by pSwitch1. If host B has only vmk2 enabled for vMotion or you switch uplink, it'll pass the two pSwitches.

    Now, if you enable the two interfaces for vMotion vmkernel, it is difficult to say how the hosts decide what vmk connects to that. You may find yourself going through the two pSwitches for the two water courses, or you're lucky and you end up with source and destination interfaces that reside on the same pSwitch. I don't know how ESXi decides the pairings, this article seems to suggest it's done deterministically for that in a similar configuration, the same key vmk would connect between them:

    Whatever the case, unless you need to other hosts on different switches, connected through your hearts only, to be able to vMotion between hosts, there no need at all to mark the vMotion VLANS on your links between chassis and Core switches.

    You see, your question of vMotion Multi-NIC is completely unrelated to this.

    Personally, I'd go with Multi-NIC vMotion use NIOC with soft actions in your config file.

  • VMotion slow 10gig NETWORK

    The host configuration:

    4 ESXi hosts.

    Reference Dell R610s

    Each has a service console connection standard 1gig with no VLAN.

    Network connections 2 x 10gig have each.

    10Gig connections are on Ethernet SFP twinax.

    10Gig NIC are dual port Intel NIC.

    10Gig switches are Juniper virtual chassis.

    There is a VLAN for the various networks that are routed

    There is a specific vMotion network that is not routed out of the data center.

    Problem:

    vMotion over 10gig link on the vlan vMotion top 1 Gb/s (~ 120 MB/s.)

    Regular traffic (iperf between two virtual machines) gets ~9Gb/s on vMotion network

    vMotion on regular networks gets about 9 GB of network speed.

    There is no firewall on these networks.

    The only difference between the ordinary and the vMotion network is the lack of routing.

    What can I take for my network guy as possible reasons vMotion would be slow?  VMotion makes any type of controls for butterfly itself to avoid ignored packets or something?

    Are the vMotion IP the same as network management network? If so, the internal routing table will make the decision and use the interface first in this range.

  • Separate physical network for VMotion?

    In my design to an ESXi 3.5 on HP Blades I've defined for the management network 2 natachasery and 2 natachasery for VMotion. These go to separate switches blade Cisco 3120. Now I stipulated a stack of external switch to reach the switches for VMotion. The management of the network switches then go to another pile of management. Client E wants to reduce costs by sharing the external battery for traffic management and Vmotion and segregation through VLANs and making the VMotion VLAN non routable. Will there be falls for this?

    Keep in mind, it is a safe place. IW has also always said that VLANing should not serve as a separation of security because of the possibility of VLAN hopping. What are the risks here? Keep in mind that it is a sensitive network of defence-biased, so I try to separate the networks as much as possible.

    If you have material (switches) in order to separate the network infrastructure then I do for reasons of pure performance.

    A physical firewall allows us to block all to enter our management and VMotion networks.

    They are both VLAN behind the firewall, but we can still allow a privileged access to the workstations of the administrator or a management server to reduce the footprint.  This method allows to manage the network with special exceptions.

    Sound risk pure vs cost.  If you think you have a good chance of someone Vlan jumping on your internal network, and then using physical security is the best bet.  If it's a low risk, then just segment it out with VLAN and use access lists and change ports to reduce the risk of vlan hopping.
