VMtool and virtual hardware

Afternoon,

I'm running ESX3.5 Update 2 in a HA environment and will update this weekend to ESX 3.5 Update 4.

After you install update 4, I am aware that I have to update the VMtools and virtual hardware.

Y at - it a particular order, I need to make the tool or the material in?

Thank you

Sorry if this ends up here twice... I replied by e-mail, but it has not been posted...

Yes, you have to restart each VM following the upgrade of the tools from the virtual machine.

Would it be possible to create 1 scan to remdiate the two Vmtools and virtual hardware? I am currently on ESXI 4.1. I don't see that it documented that anyone can be done. Was wondering if someone had done?

No, because the virtual hardware cannot be upgraded with the software.

Thanks for the information, write well.

I would like to add to the list of traps - my point of view is on one side of Windows.

    1. If you use VUM updgrade tools or hardware, check that the client is configured to support suspended snapshots

    2. If VUM can upgrade tools, but not the material, turn off comments, and then try to upgrade the hardware of the v4 to v7

    3. the upgrade VUM method seems to work well if you have a single network adapter.  We had trouble with several NETWORK cards and NETWORK load balancing.  Due to the hand reconfiugre.

4 NETWORK GHOST who are left cards account contain their original network configuration.  This can be useful to check the configuration of the new interface.  NETSH to view the configurations on GHOST interfaces.

  • VMware tools and host of virtual hardware upgrade process

We currently have 8 guests esx4 we plan to upgrade to esxi5.  Our downtime window is relatively low.  We should have sufficient time to upgrade all hosts, but I'm not so sure that we will be able to get all the vm tools and equipment as well updated.  Is there a common question VMs on the older virtual hardware and vm versions tools until our next maintenance window?

Or would it be best to try to get half of the hosts and all the computers upgraded this time and the other half next time?  We have not all hosts the value automatically vmotion machines so that they remain in place unless you have an accident.  In addition, in this scenario is any problem to launch half esx4 and the other half to esxi5?

Any advice or ideas would be appreciated.

    Thank you

    Steve Hrabak

Is there a common question VMs on the older virtual hardware and vm versions tools until our next maintenance window?

There is no problem.  Your guests will not be able to take advantage of some of the new features added with vHardware 8, but as they are upgraded they will be.

y at - it no problem running esx4 half and half to esxi5

No worries there, too.  The only thing that you must do is upgrade to VMFS5.  The bed and breakfast vSphere5 no cannot be able to see a LUN VMFS5, but everyone can see and use a LUN VMFS3

  • mix and match between vsphere 4.0 virtual machine and the hardware esxi 3.5 version run 4 on vsphere 4.

If you run a virtual machine on vsphere and not upgrade the virtual hardware, this has it problems?

My plan was to install on a server and then machines of vm, vsphere without upgrading the hardware on the machine to the virtual machine.

So I can then migrate the machines on my esxi 3.5 server if necessary.

Like many of you, I plan to update my test servers before upgrading my production servers.

If you have 3.x hosts in your cluster, and then I'd wait for upgrade virtual hardware and your guests VMware tools until all your ESX hosts are on the same generation.

  • Virtual hardware

    Hello

recently updated to ESX5.1 and just I wanted to know in what order to upgrade the virtual machines?

First tools from VMware or Virtual Hardware?

    Thanks for answers.

Upgrade the VMtools first, then the virtual hardware.

  • The upgrade of the tools of vm and vm hardware version

    Hi all

I've recently updated our vCenter for version 5.0 Update 1 and we have a mixed infrastructure composed of running ESXi 4.0, 4.1 and 5.0 ESXi ESXi hosts.

I need some clarification on versions of database tools to the virtual machine and vm hardware version.

I read that if I pass the hardware version to 8 on my virtual machine, then no matter what host running a lower than 5.0 ESXi will not be able to see these vm... is this true?

Also vmtools being dependent on the ESXi host version, what is the best way to upgrade for my vm vm tools? Upgrade of all virtual machines that are on 5.0 ESXi hosts?

Really, what I'm asking, is how to manage the tool of vm and vm version levels of material in a mixed environment of ESXi.

Work wants everything to be more 'late', but it is simply not possible with some hosts on ESXi 4.0 and ESXi 4.1.

    Thanks in advance.

Yes, it's true. HW version 8 is only supported on ESXi 5.0 and later.

In order to upgrade the version of the material, you must be on the last tools first in any case - this is the recommended method. In order to upgrade the version of HW, you need to fuel the VM so this failure should be taken into account in your courses on the latest plans.

Personally, I use PowerCLI to upgrade all the tools and cela as part of the monthly patch cycle when failures are already planned. You can install the tools without a reboot in advance by using the switch - NoReboot in your syntax PowerCLI (although there is a clause in the help files that says something along the lines of reboots may still occur in some circumstances, but I haven't done this experience yet).

In regards to the HW version, I try to upgrade downtime is planned and only to force an upgrade, if I need a feature not supported on an earlier version.

in your case, if you have any mixed clusters or there is a chance that you will need to migrate a virtual computer on an older host go then the virtual hardware. When I upgraded to Version 5, I ensured that no virtual material has been updated so that all guests were on ESXi 5.0... But also rememer that new VM created on your hosts 5.x will HW version 8 and will not be able to run on hosts earlier.

  • VMtools and ESXi 5.0 update - can I do ahead of time?

    Hello

I have a host running ESXi 4.1 (build 260247) I intend to upgrade to ESXi 5.0. This server hosts a few Windows 2003 and 2008 boxes that have need for committing patches to Windows and install VMtools is also obsolete. For the moment, I think the appropriate course of action would be: -.

    (1) apply Windows patches to virtual machines

    (2) stop the virtual machines

    (3) ESXi upgrade to v5.0

    (4) to set up the virtual machines and upgrade VMtools

    (5) restart the virtual machines.

This seems a bit complicated, so I want to see if it is possible to do it like this:-

    (1) apply Windows patches to virtual machines (no reset)

    (2) VMtools upgrade to the version provided with ESXi 5.0 (no reset)

    (3) stop VMs

    (4) ESXi upgrade to v5.0

    (5) set up the virtual machines

This would eliminate the need to perform an additional restart for virtual machines. Is this possible?  ESXi 4.1 will work with VMtools of ESXi 5.0? I suppose also that using the Update Manager to manage the implementation to date will not erase the local VMFS containing virtual machines?

    See you soon

    JD

    Hello

5 VMTools is fully compatible with ESXi 4 see here

However you are missing 1 step

    (1) apply Windows patches to virtual machines (no reset)

    (2) VMtools upgrade to the version provided with ESXi 5.0 (no reset)

    (3) stop VMs

    (4) ESXi upgrade to v5.0

    (5) set up the virtual machines

Before set you up the virtual machines, you must upgrade the virtual hardware to ver 8 (ver 7 on vSphere 4)

  • SAS Logic Controller / update of the virtual hardware

so I did experiments with virtual hardware, logic SAS SCSI Controller in the virtual machine and enhance network drivers.

First it is just me, or is this a VERY intensive upgrade, you must install the NEW vmtools, then stop, then upgrade the hardware (this is why I have experimented with the realization of the upgrade, and then Tools, which works very well).  However, using even a NEW CD of Windows install (2003) and the floppy disk controller, the SAS drive is not recognized.  I can add it during the 'press F6 for new controller... ". "blah blah blah... but he said some people found hard drives, as well as change the controller, despite having installed drivers with the tools of the NEW virtual machine still cause the OS to blue screen, inaccessible device.

So now the question arises, someone understood what driver to use for this?  They should be, but they do not seem to work, FTM

SAS controller is also required for the Windows Clustering 2008 because the old LSI adapter will not work (lack of support for SCSI-3).

  • Win98SE invited in WS v10.0.1; cannot upgrade virtual hardware

I installed VMware WS v9.x v10.0.1 and, as with all the previous WS upgrades, I upgraded the virtual hardware to version 10.  With one exception, all that is.  My Win98SE guest does not accept the upgrade of virtual equipment of v9 to v10.  I have an error message: "this virtual machine does not have the latest version of VMWare Tools.  You must update the VMware Tools until you can upgrade the virtual machine.  "For more information about upgrading, see 'http://vmware.com/info?id=98'.  I am running WS on a Win8.1 Pro host.

First of all, I did never had upgrade level of VMware Tools before upgrading the hardware.  I always updated the virtual material THEN upgraded VMware Tools.  In fact, I just did it for my Windows XP and Ubuntu Linux VMs, Win7.

Secondly, it seems to be there anyway no new version of VMware Tools for Win98SE.  When I start the operating system, I get no automatic indication I had to upgrade.  When I go to the VM option in WS while the VM is running I only get the option "Reinstall VMware Tools".  And when I set the winPre2k.iso on the virtual CD and start the installation manually I get only the options to repair/uninstall/reinstall.  Relocation of the VMware Tools has the same original problem.

I remember something vaguely similar in the past where VMware has released an upgrade which was problematic because they did not provide a new VMware Tools for Windows Pre2k operating systems and has not bothered to even update the version number in the file winPre2k.iso so that it works correctly with the new virtual hardware.  I'm guessing that something like this can happen again.  Either that or there is some kind of a bug.  I am remiss to contact VMware directly to report a bug through their support mechanisms; the last time I did it turned into a long 6 + months fiasco loaded many emails back to California and the India Conference calls, allowing the remote control of my computer, etc.

When I tried to create a new VM Win98SE, WS chose the 10 hardware version that tells me Win98SE is supposed to work on this latest version of virtual equipment.

So, let's recap: WS v10.x wants the latest tools installed in Win98SE VM prompt to update the virtual hardware to v10 but do not accept that there is NO new version of tools.  I have marked this message as a question in case someone can offer opportunities to a solution which I missed.  It's maddening to constantly through problems like this in a piece of software as professional and expensive.

Sorry you have a question however...

: 1 Windows 98 is more a BONE officially supported by VMware for VMware Workstation 10 (or Microsoft for that matter) even if it can be selected in the wizard.

Fact 2: A given virtual hardware version can be selected does not mean all the features will be compatible with all operating systems or any OS.

Fact 3: Products VMware, like many other manufactured goods, have questions that will have to be workaround at certain times.

Then...  If it appears there is a question of trying to change the hardware compatibility through the user interface and then manually edit the .vmx config file to make the changes necessary and appropriate!

If I were to create a Windows 98 VM by selecting "hardware compatibility:" Workstation 9.0 and 10.0 Workstation, while accepting all the default values, the only difference in the .vmx config file is virtualHW.version = '9' vs virtualHW.version = "10".  If a simple manual modification of the .vmx config file it will modernize to 10!

  • Virtual hardware switch to 4 (ESX 3.5) 09 (5.1 ESXi)?

    Hi guys

Someone made a form of virtual hardware upgrade of virtual machines with version 4 to 9?

Are there questions? I need to level 9 VM win2003, win2000 1 vm and 1 Net vm with windows, anyone know if there are any questions? Which is the process to do?

    Thanks and greetings

    Evening,

    Here's the process:

    1. stop the virtual machine

    2. the virtual machine snapshot

    3. upgrade of hardware

    4. start the virtual machine

    5 Verify the application functionality

    6 remove the snapshot

If you have problems a rollback to snapshot will change the version back.  I know that 2003 be fine with that will improve others I did not personally to version 9.   Anyway with the steps above you should be ok with a little downtime.

    Thank you

  • on the virtual hardware noob question, pls help

I have a problem. I have a system with vmware not made by me, but now I have to take control of it and make backups of machines. I want to buy essentials and essentials of veeam vsphere.

    Today, I read this:

    Virtual hardware

    • Virtual machines with disks involved in the shared SCSI bus are not supported, because VMware doesn't support taking snapshots these virtual machines.

    • RDM virtual disks in physical mode, Independent disks disks connected via in-guest iSCSI initiator are not supported and are ignored automatically process.

Where can I find this information? I mean where can I see in vsphere client if I am in this situation? Is there something one place where I can find clear if my system is in this situation? I had under Configuration, storage adapters, and it is written:

    Broadcom iSCSI adapter

    vmhba32 iSCSI

    This means that I'm doomed?

    Hello

This information is on your VM configurations. If you need to choose your VM--> pass parameter to change. Then select your SCSI controller and verify if the virtual or physical mode is selected.

. For RDM, just select a hard drive and check to see if you have a logic unit number instead of a vmdk. But if it's a vmdk you will not see the physical or virtual mode option.

    Kind regards

    Julien.

    Hi guys,.

Right now, we have a problem.

Last week, we try to migrate a computer virtual from one server to another.

We forget to type hard when you copy the files.

    The correct is

Then, we get an error message.

    http://screencast.com/t/kf5vSY4A2R3

And then we hit the virtual hardware to update. Now a week past and the VM still under upgrade virtual hardware.

It cannot be cancel and we can not delete the virtual machine.

    See here:

    http://screencast.com/t/76nDz2CpLWXe

Right now, we want to just cancel the upgrade process and delete the virtual machine.

    Any suggestion?

    Who is King

    Zigange

Hard shut down the virtual using the vSphere client. If it does not migrate all other virtual machines off the coast of the host, then turn off the host. When you restart the host, you should be able to remove the virtual machine as the processes that are running against her will have stopped.

    Kind regards
