VMware compliance tool

Given that VMware has announced the end of life for vRealize Compliance Manager and over the air vRealize to comply, what are the tools that remain are good at:

-Posture of the security and compliance of your enviroinment reports (that is maintained with PCI, HIPAA, risk profiles of VMware, etc)

-Automatically enforce these standards of compliance

Suggestions, traps, experiences?

(Does anyone still use this community?)

Thank you!

Hello

vRealize operations will bring in some of the data for you. However, you must activate it for use under Admin-> policies, is not 100% complete, or you can set the parameters of scope and are the only things easily verified that I see.

HyTrust, Catbird security have also than data available but not yet 100% complete, but better than most.

CISecurity has a Scanner if you are a member, but once more is not 100%.

I have a scanner, but it is not 100% complete, but covers most things for VM, host, and began networking.

William Lam wrote a small scanner to cover more easily verifiable things (anything in the DOM of the host).

If they do exist, just not much more complete. If you have vRops, turn it on and should help. If you do not, there are any other options, same contacts me and we can set something.

  • VMware-config - tools.pl detects headers kernel version @@VMWARE @ UTS_RELEASE

VMware Workstation 6.5.5 - build 328052 running on Windows XP.

My Ubuntu 10.10 VM gave me a guest this morning that the installed VMware tools are updated. So I started the upgrade process.

Installation seems to go very well up to this point:

The installation of the VMware Tools 7.8.8 328052 build for Linux completed
successfully. You can decide to remove this software from your system at any
time by invoking the following command: "/ usr/bin/vmware-uninstall-tools.pl".

Before you run VMware Tools for the first time, you must configure it by
calling the following command: "/ usr/bin/vmware-config-tools.pl". Do you want
This program to invoke the command for you now? [Yes]

I get lots of warnings of this type:

And then it's time to compile the modules:

What is the location of the directory of C header files that match your running

The directory of the kernel headers (version @@VMWARE @ UTS_RELEASE) does not match
your running kernel (version 2.6.35 - 24-generic).  Even if the module
compile successfully, it would not load into the running kernel.

    For the record:

    root@Ubuntu:~# uname - a
    Linux ubuntu 2.6.35 - 24-generic #42 - Ubuntu SMP Thu Dec 2 01:41:57 UTC 2010 i686 GNU/Linux

So how the VMware Tools config script can be educated to detect the correct version of the kernel headers?

    Thank you

    Alex

    Hello Alex,.

I hope that what follows will help you get a little further with the installation of vmware on your Linux prompt tools.

    # Needed for the construction of the kernel modules

sudo apt - get install build-essentials

    # Chdir to the directory correct wrt to your kernel running headers

    CD/usr/src/linux - headers-'uname - r' / include/linux

    # Add the utsreleases missing in the version.h file info

    Cat /generated/utsrelease.h > version.h

    # The build of vmware tools script also wants access to the file autoconf.h, so set up a symbolic link

    ln - s... /generated/autoconf.h

Now you can install VMware tools using the: /usr/bin/vmware-config-tools.pl

Note that if some modules does not compile, you will need to find a patch for them. Use google and these forums for patches to vmxnet and al.

    Kind regards

This does not happen with newly released patches.

If you are not ready to upgrade the latest patches of the ESX host, you can also try to force load modules or try to recompile all modules by using the command "" vmware-config - tools.pl - compile ".

The other (crude) way is to get the last iso linux tools of any other host ESX-4 (with the latest patches) and goes up on the virtual machine and proceed with the installation.

  • Installation of VMware in VMware Player tools

    Hello

I installed VMware Player v7, created a virtual machine (Windows) and wanted to install the VMware Tools via Player > manage > install VMware Tools... but nothing happens when I click on this option. The following 2 other methods I found in a Ko do not work either:

    • Enter D:\setup.exe where D: is the first CD-ROM drive configured for your virtual computer = > NOK as the virtual drive does not show the VMware tools.
    • Looking for the ISO file in the installation folder = > NOK: there is no ISO file.

After searching on the forum, I realized that VMware Player doesn't come with VMware tools and workaround I used was to install VMware Workstation without a license on another computer, find the file "windows.iso", copy it to the computer, mount it as a virtual drive and start the client installation.

The thing I don't understand is the reason for which the option is available in the VMware Player menu if the VMware tools are not? It's very confusing for people new to VMware and only install VMware Player...

You need not download VMware workstation to get VMware Tools in VMware Player!  VMware Player 7 is working fine on my system and had no problem downloading VMware tools, so maybe it's a problem specific to your environment/system that may block recovery.

Take a look at my answer: Re: VMware Tools missing in the Installation of VMware Player 7

  • VMware 6 / tools / iMac sound card

Sorry if this is a long post, but I think that some experience is necessary.

Before the other day, I was running Win/XP SP3 under Fusion 5 on my iMac 27 ", which has OS X 10.7.5. On the Win/XP client I run a radio ham app only Windows called NaP3. My ham radio transmitter is connected to the XP guest via the USB port (1) for the mode and frequency of the controls and Line In jack (2) the iMac at the back. The radio has a specific output port that is somehow as a microphone - hard to explain here. In any case, data coming into the Line In Jack are entered by the NaP3 application that produces a graphical display of a 'segment' of the frequency band which is granted to radio. This allows the user to 'see' where there are stations operating on this band without having to tune painfully through the search of the band. The application of NaP3 has the ability to display up to 192 kHz, a frequency value 'segment' at the same time. Note that I said "up to". It turns out that bed in the "sound card" in the iMac is capable of only 48 kHz of bandwidth. I tried an external USB sound card (E-MU 0204) and who failed miserably in the VMware/Mac/WinXP environment. So, I settled on only the width of 48 kHz displayed. Still really good and way better than not getting the app works not at all. Il - worked very well.

A few days ago, I said 'uncle' and decided to go to Win 8. My first step was to move to 6 Fusion. Then, I built a new guest of Windows 8, improved to 8.1 Windows, my installed applications, installed the VMware tools and tried NaP3. Ugh - now, instead of see 48 kHz is of the frequency spectrum, I only see 15-20 or more. Tried all sorts of combinations in the application configuration, but couldn't get that 48 kHz transparent back. Then, to try to see exactly what were my settings on the XP client, I close comments 8.1 Win and booted up the having previously worked with Windows/XP. The first thing he did was to re - install VMware tools on the guest XP - it was the first time that comments had been executed on merger 6. After the tools have been installed, I shot to the top of my request of NaP3. Well, shit - NOW it gives me the same lousy screen of 15 to 20 kHz. I'm very, very heavily leaning on the problem being VMware 6 itself or the tools. When it came on Fusion 5 everything worked. Now it's on 6 with the tools of the V6 and it works not on Win/XP or Win 8.1.

Does anyone have an idea of what can be defined in OS X or merge that will tell this "sound card" internal system actually capable of providing 48 kHz, with a value of audio and not 15-20 as it does now? In its current form, the application is pretty useless with only this type of audio response.

Thank you, Jim (ham FCC licensed W6JHB op)

Fixed! Given that I had gotten no answer on the forum, I started to dive more deeply into what was going on. I found an app on the Mac called setting up Audio and MIDI. This app has the necessary controls to set the sampling frequency audio device. Mine was set to 16 kHz. I have no idea (1) (2) how and why my app NaP3 never worked before showing me of 48 kHz, but she did. I changed the sampling of 48,000 and the application of NaP3 now shows me all the 48 kHz of bandwidth. Just for grins, I tried sampling rates higher, but there was no change - so I guess this Built In thing in the iMac has a maximum sampling frequency of 48 kHz. Anyway, I'm a happy camper and it is resolved!

don't forget to install VMware Tools on Linux, you will need the linux-headers for the installed kernel package

first of all, make sure to select the option to install VMware Tools (in this way the VMware Tools iso will be mapped in the virtual machine)

    the command-line command (as root):

    mount/dev/cdrom/mnt/cdrom

  • How to upgrade to vmware Linux tools?

I found how to install vmware tools in a Linux VM, but:

    (A) Comment you determine the current vmware on a Linux VM tools?

    (B) how do you improve on a Linux VM vmware tools? Just like install them?

    (C) require a reboot?

    (D) past discussions I've found say the VM would lose the network during this process, is that always the case?

Unfortunately I'm not a Linux guru.

    Thank you

    Hello

Please define linux because there is a very wide range of available versions and linux distributions. Unfortunately they are not all treated cells the same thing that your vmware tools must be adjusted on the kernel version used...

This can mean different steps depending on what you want to use.

    (A) usually of the host it will tell you if the vmware-tools is not up-to-date. If you have a desktop computer you can also see this in the Toolbox (the application to the taskbar you have under windows as well). Essentially if you update your kernel, you will need to update your vmware-tools. Sometimes if you update the host it is also advisable to update vmware-tools as well.

    (B) Oui, except if the kernel is too recent, then you probably compile things yourself. You can save yourself a lot of trouble here to stay on a version of linux supported.

    (C) Oui, to be able to use the new kernel, you need to restart

    (D) it depends, see my original question.

  • Upgrade VMware Tools-hardware virtual FOV 7.0 Build 130927.1406

    Hello

I tried to update the version of VMware FOV tools, but all that seemed to do is strip out...  Any ideas on how to retrieve and update, including the virtual hardware version also?

    Thank you very much.

    Alex.

    Hi Alex,

Installation of the tools is a feature of vCenter and VMware would better understand if there is a problem with the installation.  Their support may be able to help solve the problem you are experiencing.

That being said, I would like to offer assistance if I can.  I installed VMware tools in the same way that you have described.  In the past, if I had a problem installing, vCenter would let know me the reason why.  It would also seem that if tools have been "stripped" of the existing virtual machine.

I suspect that something similar is happening in your environment.

I can't be sure this link applies, but we found this VMware.

    http://KB.VMware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US&cmd=displayKC&externalID=1001354

VMware support should be able to help you further with the installation of the tools. Unfortunately, because it is not our product, I can only offer advice on how to solve the problem with the installation of the tools.
