VMware ESX4 Test Laboratory

Guys,

Can someone advise on a Board of good mother for the execution of ESX4, I will get a chip Intel Q8400 that I need to run 64-bit operating system in the lab, I was watch the hardware compatibility list and the chipset Intel ICH7 or ICH10 chipset look like they support the SATA onboard, I would prefer that it I could find one with a network card intel network as well which is supported, allowing 6 or 8 Gig or ram as well.

Any advice is welcome as to what everyone else has built. My budget for the PC is £300-£400, registration, CPU, Ram 6 or 8 GB, card mother and 2 or 3 hard drives, one for the other (s) of the operating system for the virtual machines and images.

Many thanks - John

  • Using WS VMware ESXi test Lab

I try to use VMware WS 8.0.4 as the basis for a laboratory test of ESXi.  I have a card mother MSI A75MA-G55 with 16 GB of RAM and processor Quad-Core AMD A8-3850.  I installed VMware WS 8.0.4 on 64-bit OS Windows 8 and then installed ESXi as a guest called Host1.  I could then install Windows 8 x 64 on the top of the Host1.  I then installed a second ESXi host called Host2 and then tried to install a client Windows 8 x 64 above it.  When I tried to start the client, I got the error "this virtual machine is configured for 64-bit operating systems.  However, the 64-bit mode is not possible.  translation of binary 64 bit is not supported in a VM. "He then referred me to 152 KB.  I then tried to install the same Windows on Host1 guest (I have shared iSCSI storage) and installed OK.  I allocated 5 GB of RAM for each ESXi host.

I have nothing different betweent the installation of the first and the second ESXi host.  I don't see why the second ESXi host will not support 64-bit operation.  What Miss me?

Also is there setting for WS 8 or ESXi hosts advice when running in this configuration?

    Thank you

Is the checkbox, you're referring to something new for Workstation 8.0.4?

It was introduced with Workstation 8.0.  It is only available for hardware virtual 8 VMs.  By default, all virtual machines created in Workstation 8 are material virtual version 8.  If you have an older VM, you can move the VM by VM-> manage-> change Hardware Compatibility.  If you select compatibility with Workstation 8.0, the box should appear on the processor tab.

  • VMware for test?

    Hi all,

I have to take a certification for vmware. I am working on vmware and will be a vmware courses.

But it is possible to work at home in a laboratory online for vmware? I know it's possible to simulate a vmware cluster (with2 Red Hat virtual machine and other virtual machines for virtual center), but I would like to know if there is a vmware environment on the web to make a test without the virtual machine installed on my pc.

    Thank you to

I'm not sure of the current status of http://www.rtfm-ed.co.uk/2011/08/25/announcing-miaas/. Other that that, I'm not aware of an offer for a vSphere lab online.

  • VMware ESX4 and license as single Cluster View4

We wanted to test VMware View for a possible deployment, so we bought 2 (10

packs of user licenses) of View3 with subscription.  So, by the time I got 4

value processors to ESX 3.5.  We put together 3 physical boxes capable of each

to organize each 4 processors.  To begin, we have 2 boxes with a single processor

each (6 cores per processor) and the 3rd box has 2 CPUs (even 6 hearts

each).  The 3 boxes are managed inside of vCenter Server 1

cluster.  The plan was to buy more licenses of view as necessary and much more

physical processors as needed.  Now, here's the problem I see.

Soon I also want to make virtualization of servers in the same cluster.  Now

that we have upgraded to View4 the authorisation system has completely changed.

Instead of one per processor, they are doing one per VM license.

    So my problem/question is...

How to make a group of ESX4 servers share licensing for both view

4 (for workstation virtualization) and the right ESX4 (virtualization server)?

As far as I can tell the new license is apples and oranges.

View is now authorized by VM and ESX is still licensed per processor.  My

thought was under the former regime of license, I was responsible for ensuring that I have

did not run workstation VMs I saw more licenses for and on the server

side have no more virtual processors dedicated virtual servers that I had

physical cores in the physical processors I distributed under license ESX.  This regime

was compatible on a single cluster.  But since I can only say an ESX

Server code for a single license whether licensed View4 or an ESX4

license, I see no way for it to shoot with the new permit system.

How to mix ESX and view within the same group?

I don't know, I'm entirely. But will try to clarify. View license has not really changed. It has always been by VM CPU not and still is. He was also THAT controlled EULA that infrastructure under license under the notice could not be used to run the office workloads. No desktop and server. Now, if you want to mix they is to make vSphere license and add the view components that do not include parts VI3/vSphere.

Please see the folloing for more details.

  • Install VMware ESX4 without isolating the San

    Hi all

Our environment is the round base HP BL460c G5 blades, backtracked several outputs spacewalks for storage and running ESX 3.5 (installed locally) that is deployed via Altiris/HP RDP & kickstart scripts.

We had a challenge with it originally, as production LUN could get watered whenever we had to rebuild an ESX host. Remove CF of the environment of the installation drivers did a great job to prevent this.

I, like many others I guess, makes use of an excellent paper titled 'Install VMware ESX3 without isolating the SAN' written by members of communities Véronic and initially hosted on xtravirt.com (this document seems to now have disappeared on the net, unfortunately).

We are now in the final phase of the planning of our upgrade to vSphere, and I am faced with a similar situation. What I really need to know is if I have to rebuild ESX4 ISO without CF pilots, or if he's going to ' play nice and install on the local HARD disk, rather than trashing the VMFS/RDM LUN of ID to the address below. " I realize that the best practice is to perform the insulation, but I would like to cover the bases as much as possible.

Does anyone have experience of this?

Have you tried the '-onfirstdisk = local "the autopartition command argument?  I think that your problem should be solved (unless ESX incorrectly identifies your storage as local, of course).

    -Patrick.

  • New Hp with VMWare Esx4 server configuration

    Hello

We just bought a new server - DL380 G6. During the installation of the SmartSmart CD, it asks me to choose what operating system I want to install it is to say windows 2003 or 2008.

However, I would like to install VMWare Esx4i. What should I do?

Also, how do I go and install the Proliant Support Pack, which contains all drivers for the server?

    Thank you

Make sure you have the latest version. HP releases a new version of the firmware CD every few months. The most common is August 10, version 8.6. It is sometimes updated firmware for specific devices between the CD versions. Check to see if it affects your installation.

You don't need anything be it front of ESXi. ESXi is installed directly on the hardware. You may consider to install inside the SD card and leave space for the data store.

  • VMware Esx4 chronometric

    Hello

I have a server VMware Esx4i. I connect to Esx4i using the vSphere client.

When I go to the performance tab, I see the time as 07:25 when the time actually looks at 11:45.

How can I check the date/time Esx4i to see if the settings are good?

I checked everywhere using the vSphere client, which I believe you can fully manage the server Esx4i?

    Thank you

Select the host on the left, then configuration right.  Now, go to Configuration of time under the software and click Properties, on the right, .the Options If you want to select a NTP server such as time.windows.com.

Please aware points to any useful answer.

  • I need recommendations for a small 32-bit VM for vMotion tests.

After using a combination of build the ultimate vSphere Lab of Sammy Bogaert and guides http://derek858.blogspot.co.uk/2012/09/vmware-vcenter-51-installation-part-1.html of Derek Seaman, I now fully nested operation 5.1 ready for testing laboratory.

I now need a 32-bit VM for test vMotion with and I was wondering could someone recommend something they use? Maybe a pre-constructed unit?

    Thank you

Pre-built devices are easy and quick, but also sometimes use a virtual machine powered with no operating system on it as well. Gets not much faster than that.

  • VMware vsphere essentials more and Dell MD3000i iSCSI - virtual disk not on preferred path

    Hello world

I am trying to set up our new vmware vsphere essentials plus the facility. We have 2 x Dell R710 servers running vmware esx4 and have a md3000i SAN.

Each server has a network cable to connect to a network SAN controller.

    vmserver1 a vmnic6 IP 192.168.130.110 the IP controller connection 0 192.168.130.101

    vmserver1 has IP 192.168.130.111 vmnic4 connection to controller 1 IP 192.168.130.102

    vmserver2 a vmnic 6 IP 192.168.131.110 the IP controller connection 0 192.168.131.101

    vmserver2 has IP 192.168.131.111 vmnic4 connection to controller 1 IP 192.168.131.102

Whenever I start a virtual server it causes the dell md3000i start flashes orange, and management tool says disc not on favorite virtual path.

After entering the tool configuration and affecting the path preferred, from the commencement to vmware, even with a single connected server it causes the error.

I tried to configure vmware to use direct fixed and alternate paths.

I did a quick search on Google and found these sites:

    http://www.delltechcenter.com/page/VMware ESX4.0andPowerVault MD3000i

    http://en.community.Dell.com/support-forums/storage/f/1216/t/19269507.aspx

    Strange configuration.

Looks like you are using some cross cable?

Each host must have 2 vSwitches, each with a port vmkernel on one of the two iSCSI network.

Each host must reach all 4 of the MD3000i (test with the vmkping command) interface.

  • Test lab: HP DL 580 G5 128 MB RAM (storage DAS)

Can someone help us here with suggestions on the best way, we set up our storage on our new test laboratory?

We have the following piece of hardware...

    HP DL 380 G5

    8 x 30 GB SAS 10 k disks

    128 MB OF RAM

    4 x Quad Core 2.93 mhz

    Controller Smart P400

We think of a disk configuration of...

RAID 1 + 0 for o/s and some of the CPS VM

RAID 5 for the remaining drive to welcome all other machines virtual (Mostly w2k3)

I know that a higher technical controller would be nice, but we have not available.

I thought of RAID 6 for the virtual machine, but I am worried about the perfomance.

Its a test lab that will be used for functional testing and will not see a huge amount of charge.

Everyone has views on how we can configure the DAS.

If you consider any useful comment please assign points :)

    Hello

I was reading s cluster host failure tolerate, to admission control and I could couldn't includes below the concepts.

Difference between opportunity and places available

Difference between failover and places available slots.

I have here is Advanced Runtime info in my VMware to Test cluster.

Here, it shows that I have 89 number of locations,

    Available places = 0

    Failover slots = 83

Like places = 0, this means that I won't be able to poweron the VM more if one of the host is down? Please explian.

  • Mavericks GUEST on VMWARE fusion 6 Mavericks operating system host

I want to install the Mavericks as a guest under VMWare fusion test OS / X Server and guest will be a customer.

Now, my problem is that even if the installation goes very well - when it comes to anything keypad entry works.  I can type, but no characters appear.  Outside of the machine virtual all works well.  The mouse works fine in the virtual machine.  I can even 'free' the mouse using control - so I know the keyboard does something, but I can't type in the virtual machine.  What can I do or check this?

I don't want to cancel the installation from the beginning and I need the keyboard to the original user of the installation.

    Thank you

I deleted and did the installation again and I used the keyboard for all navigation across (could whereI) and things seem to work fine now.  Quite strange.

  • VMWare - Server 2003 on an HFS Partition

    Hello world

I was wondering if it was possible to install Server 2003 on an HFS Partition and if it would support VMWare ESX4.

We have a VM of 2003 server as a file server to our Mac users, but it seems that Finder has a lot of trouble with NTFS volumes.

    Any ideas?

    Thanks in advance.

The problems you have are now nothing compared to problems that you would go in a 2003 VM who tries to use HFS.

In other words - you forget.
MAC OS can handle much better NTFS that 2003 can handle HFS
