VMware HA, concepts of slot

Hello

I was reading s cluster host failure tolerate, to admission control and I could couldn't includes below the concepts.

Difference between opportunity and places available

Difference between failover and places available slots.

I have here is Advanced Runtime info in my VMware to Test cluster.

Capture.GIF

Here, it shows that I have 89 number of locations,

Available places = 0

Failover slots = 83

Like places = 0, this means that I won't be able to poweron the VM more if one of the host is down? Please explian.

Thank you

-Prashant Girennavar.

Failover slots = Slots reserved for fail policy of CAC that are not used by ESXi

    Hello

The two hosts will be able to see and access virtual methods on SAN?

Yes, your host will be able to see and access your created data store previously.

What I have to install a second view controller on the new host for failover to work? or is that managed in the VCenter?

No need to install a second VM to ensure HA. If you enable the feature HA on your cluster host failure, your VM will restart automatically on the second host.

  • Server consolidation

We have 8-10 servers with our data center and I read more in virtualization. I intend to bring it to 3 servers using vmware virtualization concept.

    However, I have queries below:

    1. what products to use VMware to achieve?

    2. What is the difference between vmware vsphere, vmware ESXi?

Can someone please provide a gist.

    Thank you.

vCenter is to simplify your ESX / I host management. Instead manage 3 x ESX hosts separately, you can manage centrally using vCenter.

ESXi host is where all your virtual machines will be starting. It's bare metal hypervisor unlike ESX classic, he came with a very small footprint. You can run several servers (cluster) ESXi and provide high availability for virtual machines with VMware HA, DRS and vMotion, FT (sharing storage is required and appropriate license).

So that you can migrate your physical servers to the virtual machine, you need the converter tool.

  • Traffic Shaping to cap bandwidth

Hi all, I have a question about the port groups and traffic shaping.

Say I have a 10 GB uplink on my for use by VMs esx server and the server will host computers 10 virtual. I want to limit the bandwidth of each VM usage to 1 GB. If I understand correctly the VMware networking concepts to do this I create a vSwitch and assign the 10 GB uplink. Can I create a group of ports and set the average maximum burst setting to 1 GB.  As I deploy each VM I would attribute the Group of ports on the virtual network adapter in the virtual machine.  Each VM would then receive the 1 GB traffic shaping parameters.  Is this fair?

I was a little unsure as to if just ports group provides the parameters for each card virtual network of port assigned to the port group or if the Group of port traffic shaping parameter represents the total amount of bandwidth available for virtual computers assigned to the port group.

If just ports group provides the parameters for each port of the virtual network card then each VM would be capped at 1 GB.  Otherwise, I guess that if the Group of port traffic shaping parameter represented the total available bandwidth in assinged of VMs for the Group of ports, I would need to create a group of ports for each VM I wanted to cap at 1 GB. 10 mV and 10 port groups to 1 GB each... that doesn't seem fair.

Someone at - it glimpse of this?

    Thank you

Port groups provide cap to each virtual NETWORK adapter - so each bound traffic VMs will be capped at 1 GB - but don't forget if you add another group of this virtual switch ports, that these virtual machines network traffic will not be bound by the settings applied to this port group.

  • Report on the ability of virtual machines VMware Cluster

We started to evaluate Foglight for capacity planning and evaluation. One of the reports that I believe is interested in our leadership is the "ability of virtual machines VMware Cluster" report. I see that the report provides a value for the VMS remaining. I would like to learn a little more about this value and how is it calculated:

    1. What exactly a 'virtual machine' represents in these reports?
    2. Can a similar report to run using a specific type of server based on the allocation of resources or patterned after an existing VM wokload?

We are a small, medium and large VM offering based on the allocation of resources. I would like to change the report to display the number of each type of virtual machine I have available... or pointer pointing to an existing virtual machine, and according to its resources and workload, determine how this server, I have available.

It is based on the average size of the virtual machine in the cluster.  If you look at the dashboard of capacity management in the user interface, it can give you more details by cluster.  It is based on the average of the use of min/max/AVG across all virtual machines in a period given (usually 90 days).  This can not be changed today, but there is work to allow lets you specify a size of slot for something as small, medium, large, etc...

This feature exists in the Foglight for virtualization, however Standard Edition.  It might be interesting to watch this, if you need it sooner.

  • 2808 LAG for use with VMware ESXi and Linux collage

I posted the month last about setting up my work with groups LAG http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/network-switches/f/866/t/19537080.aspx servers (I'll effectively implementing implement this Saturday)

I decided to buy a 2808 for my ESXi server get more aggregated connections to my staff iSCSI Linux server but now I'm worried I might have made a mistake to buy the 2808.

After looking in the manual before I realized I could have been mistakenly assuming that the 2808 had STP and LACP, as I can't find LACP anywhere in the PDF file. I guess that the configuration of my Linux machine for 802.3ad is out (a hope to make mode 4), so now for the configuration of my house, I wonder (* 1 *) that I have to configure my VMware NIC team like and what mode of binding should I use on my Linux host? As for the section at the top (my working configuration) (* 2 *) I don't know what to do about the road other than the leave as 'route based on originating virtual port ID "? (This is how our other data centers are configured, but I'm waiting for my admin network as agglomerates ESXi hosts are configured with the channels of port on our cisco switches)

For the House, I want to try to increase the bandwidth by using three NICs in each server, I was hoping that it works:
VMware: Route of IP hash function?
    w/Linux: balance-alb?

    -VMware:
    Before you begin:

    -Linux:
    * Descriptions of bonding modes *.
+ Mode 0 balance-rr: Round-robin policy: transmit packets in the sequential order of the first available through the last high school. This mode provides load balancing and fault tolerance.

+ 1 active-backup mode: Active-backup policy: only one slave in the link is active. A different slave becomes active if and only if, the active slave fails. MAC address of the binding is visible from the outside on a single port (NIC) to avoid confusion between the switch. This mode provides fault tolerance. The first option affects the behavior of this mode.

+ 2 balance-xor mode: XOR policy: transmit based [(adresse MAC XOR avec destination MAC traiterait de source) modulo County slave]. This selects the slave even for each destination MAC address. This mode provides load balancing and fault tolerance.

+ 3 broadcast mode: broadcasting policy: transmits everything on all slave interfaces. This mode provides fault tolerance.

+ Mode 4 802.3ad: IEEE 802.3ad dynamic aggregation of links. Creates aggregation groups who share the same speed and duplex settings. Use all the slaves in the active aggregator according to the 802.3ad specification.

    -Prerequisite:
-1.Ethtool support in the base drivers to retrieve the speed and duplex of each slave.
-Switch 2.A which takes care of IEEE 802.3ad dynamic aggregation of links. Most of the switches will require some type of configuration to activate 802.3ad mode.

+ Mode 5 balance-tlb: Adaptive load balancing transmission: Channel link that doesn't require any special switch support. Outgoing traffic is distributed according to the intensity of the current (relative speed) on each slave. Inbound traffic is received by the current slave. If the receiving slave fails, another slave takes over the MAC address of the failed receiving slave.

    -Prerequisite:
-1.Ethtool support in the base drivers to retrieve the speed of each slave.

+ 6 balance-alb mode: Adaptive load balancing: includes balance-tlb plus receive balancing (rlb) for IPV4 traffic and doesn't require any special switch support. Receive load balancing is achieved by ARP negotiation. Link driver intercepts the ARP replies sent by the local system on their way and replaces the hardware address of source with the unique hardware address of one of the slaves in the bond as different counterparts use different physical addresses for the server.

PS. http://i.dell.com/sites/doccontent/shared-content/data-sheets/en/Documents/dell-powerconnect-2800-series-spec_sheet.pdf said that the 2800 series supports LACP, so if I'm worried about anything on my iSCSI side slap me please in the face, but I guess even in this case, I'm still not sure how to configure the ESXi host because it does not support LACP without vSphere and my original configuration is a free version , so I have no web vSphere management needed to make the LACP allow the change.

Not sure if it is of no use: example configuration of EtherChannel / switches control protocol LACP (Link Aggregation) with ESXi/ESX and Cisco/HP (1004048), but that's where I was to base the choice on IP hash from.

It must have the support of layer 3 to achieve IP hash, IP addressing is a 3-layer technology, so a 6200 series or higher or the soon to be released N3000 series.

  • new to vmware, vsphere and networking vswitch

    Hi all

I am new to virtualization, but decided to try it since my company is going full on ESXI5.5.  That is why I hope that some kind gurus here can point me in the right direction regarding some doubts I have... and do not forgive me if I ask ridiculous questions...

    ==========

So far, I know that VMs, through their vNIC connect to vSwitch which is in turn connected to the physical machine or the host ESXI (vmnic) network card. The vmnic is then connected to a real L2/L3 switch.

[VM Vnic] <>- [vswitch] <>- [vmnic] <>- [physical switch]

However, what I don't understand is how the vmnic actually works to spread the traffic "inward" to the vswitch? I can't really come up with one question to explain my doubt, but below are the doubts that I asked myself->

    • How is he able to assign the IP off the internal virtual machines?
    • When an outer package of the physical switch is being sent to the vmnic how he spend in-house for internal virtual computers?
    • How even knows designated IP belong to a virtual machine inside and "inward" to happen to the vswitch?
    • Is the vmnic using address IP or MAC to decide if it means putting the package inside the switch?
    • When an arp request for a virtual machine IP is send from the outside, the vmnic will reply with its mac address?
    • When an arp request is sent from an internal virtual machine, the vmnic keep track of the mac address of the virtual machine so that next time, when he saw a response to this MAC, he knows inside 'before' the vSwitch
    • What is this work something like a 'bridge' mode fill the vswitch internal to the external physical switch? Is there a table of addresses belonging to the vmnic mac?
    • Whenever the IP of the virtual computer is assigned, the IP address will be "bind" to the vmnic?
    • How register us all IP or Mac addresses (if any) that are associated with a vmnic?

Or rather simply, I wonder how the physical network adapter on the host (esxi), knows that he must transfer a frame "inward" to the vswitch? is there a link OF the virtual machine to the interface? or nic was a table of addresses mac or something... (but the mac address table guess belong to vswitch?)

    Thank you.

    Kind regards

    Noob

    Hello

    Welcome to the community!

I would like to start with a doc. I recommend you to read our VMware Virtual Networking Concepts guide that I hope will help you to better understand the basic details of the virtual in VMware switch, even if it's a bit old.

    On your last question, however:

    > Or rather simply put, I wonder how the physical network adapter on the host (esxi), knows that he must transfer a frame "inward" to the vswitch? is there an IP link from the virtual machine to the interface? or nic was a table of addresses mac or something... (but the mac address table supposed to belong to vswitch?)

The vminc (i.e. the physical card) on the ESXi host is not that there is a virtual switch behind it. It transfers the packets to the driver and then the top layer software it management. There is no magic to this topic. In some cases, there are a few added techniques (for example netqueue), but the basis remains the same. Vmnic (i.e. the physical NETWORK adapter card) does not keep the information of MAC address of the virtual machine on virtual machines, but does the vSwitch. But even the vSwitch does not retain details of the IP address.

A virtual switch, as such, doesn't have the same kind of as a physical switch mac address table. If a virtual machine under tension then the vSwitch stores the virtual port <->combination MAC address number and keeps it like that (so far it's really no different a physical switch). A big difference is that, well that the vSwitch does not learn the MAC addresses of the external network. If there is a picture of outside with the MAC address of unicast for which there is no port isn't linked then the packet gets dropped. And if the virtual machine sends traffic to another MAC that does not exist in the virtual switch and then it will be sent out via the uplink (s) (if it exists).

The MAC address of the vmnic does not play here (unless one of the vmkernel interface pulls his MAC to an adapter of uplink).

I hope this helps. Let me know if you still have any questions.

  • Disk not configured VM after Exchange hard drive Slots / berries

Hi - I have 5.5 ESXi configured HP DL380 G6 server and three independent logical drives.  I had exchanged a HDD in slot 1 with slot 3 to do a test, but then he returned to original slots.

In the ESXi VMware client, I see the detected hard drives but next to him said ' ' unconfigured disk and virtual machines, I say unknown inaccessible. "

I removed the VM of the inventory by pressing a note KM, but the problem is that I do not see my data stores, none of the hard disk appears in the Configuration > storage > devices section. If I can see them in the Configuration > health > storage area.

Any thoughts on what I can do for the disc to be recognized, all that was done was split/Bay 1 hard drive was moved to slot/Bay 3 and vice versa.

Would appreciate the help as I would not start over.

    Thank you!

have you already read the raid controller?

What says the raid controller when you start the server? raid hp controller can sometimes block records if they find missconfigurations on it...

  • vmWare Horizon Workspace - change port number

    Hi guys,.

I installed the workspace vmware horizon as a proof of concept, everything works fine. I'm now doing the public gateway. The problem which is the port number (443) that uses the bridge can be put on the public because he is facing some of our other things. I wonder since everything is installed and working properly, what would be the proper way to change the GATEWAY port number?

    Thank you

Unfortunately, in 1.0, we do not allow change the port number.

Will you be able to move to 1.5? Then, allow us to change the COMPLETE domain name and port.

  • Fast VP + Vmware

    Hello

I am new here and I m new for all the this thing VM, san, storage, etc etc... and I had a few questions about VMware and QUICK of VP.

As far as I know I need to move a machine virtual to a logic unit on the pool of FAST VP number, FAST VP will be what?

Will a 'slice' (a block so well do things) virtual machine having more workload and will put it in a SSD drive for best performance for this virtual machine? And then what?

Also, I did a little investigation about this, but I got more confused, is it necessary to measure IOPS of the virtual machines that are intended to be moved to FAST VP luns, right?

Since I was hardly new to this kind of things together VMware and since I am still trying to understand many concepts of the virtual machine documentation and EMC documentation... Here's another of my newbie question... What is the difference between FAST VP and to define 'actions' on the VM options? Or, what is the difference with DRS storage... Beat me if you want but I m learning this from scratch and it's very confusing!

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

    Kind regards!

Then nothing... the YOUNG will take care of the rest.

Will a 'slice' (a block so well do things) virtual machine having more workload and will put it in a SSD drive for best performance for this virtual machine? And then what?

Exactly - wil hot blocks upward to drive faster, and cold moves down on the slower drive automatically (how long it takes depends on model table and the configuration).

Also, I did a little investigation about this, but I got more confused, is it necessary to measure IOPS of the virtual machines that are intended to be moved to FAST VP luns, right?

It is useful for you to understand correctly the number of virtual machines / how well pool can take charge, but its not required, in itself the workload.

Since I was hardly new to this kind of things together VMware and since I am still trying to understand many concepts of the virtual machine documentation and EMC documentation... Here's another of my newbie question... What is the difference between FAST VP and to define 'actions' on the VM options?

FAST VP moves blocks on the storage array.  Actions at the level of VMware is trying to deal with contention in some most important virtual machines.  Its OK to use both at the same time.

Or, what is the difference with DRS storage... Beat me if you want but I m learning this from scratch and it's very confusing!

Storage DRS must be on 'Initial placement Mode' only when using FAST of VP.  DTS can move virtual machines between data warehouses for better performance, but it can move all SMV, while YOUNG can do with much better granularity (1 GB slices).

Any information will be greatly appreciated.

Assuming you are using VNX (and), all of these practices are in thechbook here:

    http://www.EMC.com/collateral/hardware/technical-documentation/h8229-VNX-VMware-TB.PDF

Also, talk to your dealer and ask them to get into the gory details on this in your local EMC vSpecialist/SDspecialist.

  • VMware Tools upgrade changes machineID, breaks the issuance of licenses for some applications

We have this application called localization, manufactured by Hyland Software. Whenever I've upgrade VMware Tools on our ESXi hosts on all virtual machines, it breaks the granting of licenses for the application and localization will not work until the licensing is completely redone. No idea why this is happening?

Below is the reading of the application regarding the issuance of licenses, and attached is a screenshot of the error in the application. I'm certainly not asking someone to solve the problem of the application, but what on earth could possibly VMTools change that would have caused this? Thanks in advance!

If this is what is causing the problem?

I'm sure of it - about 99.9% Yes.

And if so, what changes would affect a particular software feature licenses?

"All the virtual machines have a hardware version, which shows the characteristics of virtual hardware that supports the virtual machine, such as BIOS or EFI, number of virtual slots, maximum number of processors, the maximum memory configuration and other features material." - from http://www.vmware.com/products/datacenter-virtualization/vsphere/compute.html

They probably linked the license to an individual (or several) attribute of the "hardware" of the virtual machine. Think of it regarding a physical system - changed nothing in the operating system (at least not GUID, MSN, etc.), it was something that the operating system has access to related material. You could probably bug them enough and get them to reveal madness method they use for this, but I don't know if it would be really useful. You can leave virtual to older material , to some extent, which means that you can reduce the number of times you have to repeat this process.
