VMware Lab home

Hello

I want to set up a laboratory at home that can be used to learn and explore the features of ESXi 5.1. I intend to install Workstation 9 then install ESXi 5.1 in one of the virtual machines in the workstation. Also I would like to install vCentre 5.1 Server directly in the workstation so that it can be used as an interface to access to and manage the machine virtual 5.1 ESX host and other virtual machines within the workstation. With this configuration, I would like to learn and explore the following features of ESXi

DRS

Fault tolerance

VMotion

SR - IOV

To build this lab, I reduced the following configuration

CPU - Intel® Core™ i7 - 4770S processor (8 M Cache, up to 3.90 GHz)

RAM - 16 GB OF DDR3 MEMORY

-Card mother Intel DB85FL

OS - Windows 7

Hard - SAS 300 GB drive

1 Gb Ethernet NIC

Is this good enough to support the above requirements/characteristics?

Thank you and best regards,

Mukz

I think you should be fine with the material (although a SSD for the VM wouldn't be bad). In any case, I don't think that you will be able to use SR - IOV in the virtualized environment and FT may be limited to nested 32-bit clients.

I suggest that you take a look at building the ultimate vSphere Lab to get an idea of how set up the lab and discover the discussions in nested virtualization (especially those who answered jmattson ) before buying hardware.

Well, I finally do! I took the course (vSphere 5;) Install, configure, manage), I booked the review (VCP5), and now I'm going to set up a laboratory at the House VMware.

I borrowed some ideas of the great Sammy Bogaert blog

    The system that I'm building will have the following equipment;

    1 x processor - Intel Core i7-3770 BX80637i73770, Quad Core, 8 MB of Cache L3, 3.40 GHz (3.90 GHz Turbo Max), Socket m2 (LGA1155), 77 w, fan, retail

    1 x Crucial ct128m4ssd2cca m4 2.5 "solid state - 128 GB, SATA III 6 Gb/s drive

1 x Shuttle XPC SH67H3 Barebone PC - No. CPU, chipset Intel H67, Socket 1155, no. RAM, Gigabit LAN, USB 3.0, no. OS

    1 x Cache 64 MB disk hard - 2 to 3.5 "SATA, WD Green WD20EARX

    1 x DVD burner internal Lite-On IHAS124-04 DVD + R 24 X, DVD-R 24 X, DVD + RW 8 X, DVD - RW 6 X, DVD + R DL 8 X, SATA (OEM)

    1 x Converter drive Bay hard Thermaltake AC0014 - 3.5 "for SSD/2.5" converter

I will configure it with the following:

Windows 7, VMware Workstation 9 and running different nested VM with ESXi, vCenter, etc..

So with all that being said, anyone has any advice that recommend you for this type of installation.

Very much looking forward to the challenge in the coming months!

    See you soon!

Im sure that your configuration will be enough juice to fully support a virtualized lab, we have nearly the same configuration, but I had 'only' 24 GB of ram, lol, I have tried everything including FT (although you would have to edit the vmx files). I was virtualizing 3 machines esx, vcenter device, an AD, a freenas VM (or openfiler) controller for iSCSI SAN storage and all was still smooth as butter (4 virtual machines in 3 machines esx running windows 2003 server)

  • Why move them to the bottom of empty in VMware Lab Manager when you use Firefox 4 +?

When using Mozilla Firefox 4.0 or later, drop boxes in VMware Lab Manager are populated is more if it is not possible to deploy new virtual machines.

It turns out that VMware has released a Lab Manager in August (4.0.4) update that resolves this problem. I upgraded to LM 4.0.4 and dropdown lists are now met again.

  • Recommendation from VMware lab

What is a good physical switch low cost to use with a VMware Lab?  I only need 2 small 24 or 48 port switches.  I'm trying to figure out a good Cisco switch model that tends to have a lot of market penetration and I could find one easily on ebay or something.  I only need 1 Gb ethernet, IOS for the operating system, ability LACP and this kind of basic stuff.  Thank you!

Many people go to a renovated version 1GbE a Cisco 3560 G / 3750G (or one from eBay). The SG300 series was introduced to resolve the discrepancy.

  • Why I am invited to a certificate at the launch of VMWare Server home page?

Why I am invited to a certificate at the launch of VMWare Server home page?  I know it's not everyone.  Many of my colleagues use VMWare server, and it is not prompted to select a certificate.

You are prompted because the server uses the SSL certificate by default demo. The demo cert is issued by VMWare, this transmitter is not approved by your browser if you receive the certificate error message when you try to access the page.

If you use Firefox, you can add the certificate as an exception by selecting the drop down menu "I understand the risks", "Add Exception".

If you use IE you can continue to the Web site, and then select the "certificate error" warning message in the address bar (assuming that you have IE 7/8) and by adding the exception it (view certificate > install the certificate).

Beyond the options above to add the certification to your browsers trust certificate store, you can download a new web SSL certificate on your server issued by a common approved issuer (i.e. VeriSign, or your own approved Cert authority internal).

  • Requirements of VMWare Lab Manager

    Hello!

I'm trying to put together a proof of concept for my business help to reach an agreement to buy and implement of Lab Manager, but am having a hard time getting real answers on a licence!  Maybe I'm reading just the documents wrong or something, but here are my questions:

    (1) VMWare Lab Manager does support ESXi?  If so, why do I use instead of ESXi ESX when all management is made by the end before (Lab Manager or vCenter Server)?  ... I have no need of HA or VMotion.

    (2) do I need for 3 products license?  For example, Lab Manager, vCenter Server, and ESX server?

I read in a PDF document that vCenter Server is not a must but could take no ESXi, but a person in chat support told me that Lab Manager backed ESXi but necessary vCenter Server.  I'm a bit confused.

What is the deployment scenario recommended for an environment with 1 physical host (to start) but plans to expand to 3-5 in the year?

Thanks for your help!  Sorry to ask what I am sure is answered somewhere on the website, I just couldn't find where and it seems that the name of the product seems to be different depending on what you're looking at (ESX Server Infrastructure =?)

    -Jesse Reinhart

    Hi Jesse

    (1) lab Manager does not support ESXi.

    (2) Yes Lab Manager 3.0.2 requires the current version VC, it does not work on stand-alone host. Director of the laboratory 2.5.x support stand-alone host.

You need a configuration that Lab Manager-->--> ESX VC even for single host currently.

    Hope that helps

  • Lab home equipment specifications

I intend to set up a lab at home. I would be grateful if someone who has set up a lab at home can help me with the specification. Please do not provide VMware HCL.

There are a lot of blog out there. people who have built their environment clean white box and shared the process of generation, those who used to create an environment that is completely nested in VMware workstation AutoLab .

I know you said that you do not want to be pointed to the HCL, but really this is a good starting point. another place to look for, but the detail is a little dated is now http://www.vm-help.com

  • Hosted vmware Lab for VCP5

    Hi all

I was wondering - do we know about an esxi vmware hosted online not expensive Lab for the study of the ICM. Something like a virtual esxi hosted in the clouds where I could connect and convenient for my CIM certification. I have a lab at home purchase, I need something that I can move with me.

Your suggestions would be helpful. Thank you guys

  • Implementation of vSphere LAB home

    Hello

I'm new to VMware and back to this community. I'm looking for assistance and advice to establish a lab at home environment. The reason why I like to do what I want to get some hands on experience with vSphere and other new technologies.

I have a desktop computer once I built in December 2009: Basic care as follows:

    ASUS P6X58D Premium Motherboard

    Intel i7 920 CPU

    12 GB of RAM (g Skill Ripjaws Series DDR3 1600 MHz PC3-12800 (6x2GB)

Cool Master HAF922 mid tower ATX case

    2 x onboard Marve Yukon 88E8056 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet.

    Running Windows 7 Pro.

1 x Linksys Dual band Gigabit Router (WRT320N)

    1 x HARD 1 t USB external drive

I have setup an ESX4.0 Server and how it works in VMware Workstation 6.5.2 build 156735. There is no other virtual machines that I built in either in ESX server or VMware Workstation.

I would like to set up at least two or three ESX 4.0 server in VMware Workstation. and then I like to create a few VMs that have vCenter server, DB server and domain control, DNS, DHCP server and file server and print., exchange 2007 and SharePoint server.

I don't have any other high-end SAN or NAS storage or another type of storage. Is there another way to set up shared storage that I use for all my virtual machines that I like the installer. I like to achieve and learn of VMotion, VM HA, DRS, Storage VMotion, etc...

Is it possible for me to do all this with what I have?

    Thank you

Also, you can find Openfiler and Freenas as VSA for VMware (virtual storage device), so you can import your VMware Workstation or VMware ESX/ESXi.

And also you can test ' [EMC Celerra VSA | ]. "[http://virtualgeek.typepad.com/virtual_geek/2009/04/New-Celerra-Vsa.html]" or "[HP Lefthand VSA | ]. [http://h18006.www1.HP.com/Products/Storage/Software/VSA/index.html] "which have 60 days trial.

You can with the help of EMC Celerra VSA / VMware SRM (Site Recovery Manager) work experience the latter.

    Hello Leo,

indeed. The lines, you need to configure are the VTY lines, visible at the bottom of the configuration. A basic configuration that would allow all protocols including telnet and ssh would look like this:

    R1(config-Line) # password mypassword

    R1(config-Line) # local connection

    R1(config-Line) #transport of entry all

  • Integration Microsoft DevStudio 2010 and VMware Lab Manager

Microsoft DevStudio 2010 seems to provide a nice integration in a virtualized environment of laboratory course using their own hypervisor. What is VMware plan to integrate this? Someone else began to focus on the integration yet? In order to manage isolated networks, they seem to have a lab test controller talking agents, so different test agents in the "closed" configurations can easily be found out.

I already have a wind front of genius as far as my current LM infrastructure goes.

Microsoft plans to add support for ESX by SP1 environment according to their team. How that factors in Lab Manager I don't know. In addition, their installation on the hypervisor isn't exactly great. It requires the VM already be made by hand. So there is no, automagic dpeloy the VM to test cancel them the deployment when done. So from what we have seen, it seems to not integrate yet. I found it very disappointing. However, they have the facilites for before and after series of tests shares. So our next step is to see if you use the API we can deploy and Undeploy of an image of Lab Manager and pass through the IP address of the machine newly deployed to the Test Manager. It should work, but we have not begun to this topic but, as we always try to make sure that we understand everything that happens in the process of the hypervisor.

  • the most effective configuration using vmware lab environment?

    Hello

    I have a production vmware

infrastructure. It consists of multiple esx hosts, an iscsi san, and

about 12 virtual machines.  I would like to get some of these machines in

a lab environment, which is the most effective way to achieve this?

have also a few physical machines as well, that I intend to help

the p2v tool for.  Thank you

    1. create the VLANS separated for the Lab virtual machines and use to limit the bandwidth of the traffic shaping

2 create a new pool of resources for the virtual laboratory machines, to control the use of resources (configure "share" = low)

3 use/Take snapshots before allocating virtual users computers, so that you can return it back once the activity is complete.

    See you soon,.

  • Impossible to connect to vCenter Server 5.5 using the vSphere Client

    Hello

I'm trying to configure VMware Lab home using the link below and I have reached a stage where I need to connect to vCenter Server using the vSphere client.

    http://boerlowie.WordPress.com/2011/12/13/building-the-ultimate-vSphere-lab-part-9-ESXi/

I installed the package of 5.5 full vCenter server using the simple installation option and it includes vCenter server, single sign - on, Webclient vSphere, vCenter server and vCenter Server inventory service. All the the latter is installed on a virtual machine that is running Windows server 2008 R2 guest OS.

Whenever I try to open a session on the vCenter Server uses the vSphere client, one of the following error is displayed.

    1. you do not have the permissions to connect to the server 'vCenter server IP address.

    2. cannot complete the connection incorrect username or password-, this error is visible when I do not specify domain\username domain user name and simply enter the user name.

For the details of the error, please see the screenshots - vSphere_client_1, vSphere_client_2 and vSphere_client_3.

As suggested in the link below, I tried to create an SPN and then set the SPN (Principal of Service name) and the UPN (User Principal name) in the Active Directory identity Source using the web of vSphere client (please see screenshot vSphere_Webclient_2)

    http://vinfrastructure.it/2014/01/issue-in-logging-into-vCenter-server-using-Windows-ad-credentials/

To fix the permission error, I tried to add the domain user to the Administrators group on the server vCenter (see screenshot vSphere_Webclient_1).

However, none of the above-mentioned resolution has worked.

So can someone please help? I am stuck because of this problem and badly need help to move forward.

    Thank you

    AJMAL

Able to connect to the vSphere Client do you use the [email protected] account?

Have you already set up permissions on the server vCenter object?
