• Slow down or frozen system when you run Time Machine

  My entire system has been slow and I'm getting a lot of beach balls and frozen software/accidents of spinning. It is also slow to wake up and sometimes freezes when I try to log on my user account. I tried a number of things - routine maintenance, looking at activity monitor to see what is using RAM, reinstall MS Office, upgrade to El Capitan and two trips to the Genius Bar-(who showed none of the software or obvious hardware problems). Sort of, I noticed that when I run backup TM, the machine seems to be the slowest. I bought a new backup disk - thinking it was my external HD itself which was not (it is several years old) - but this does not appear to have solved the problem. And the machine ran faster in the Apple Store at home (of course) when my outside was not plugged.

  Anyone seen this before? Is it possible to 'clean up' Time Machine in case that is what is at the root of the problem?

  The genius of Apple suggested that he could be something corrupted in my user account and not related to TM, but not to delete my account, he had no any solution!

  I have a MacBook Pro (15 inch, early 2011) which works very well on the Mountain Lion for a long time. I finally got round to upgrading to El Capitan last week: directly to 10.11.6.   At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu.
