Windows 7 Pro upgrade Activation issue.

Windows 7 Pro upgrade Activation issue. I bought a real upgrade of Windows 7 Pro 64 bit. In reading, there is no way I could actually update my current installation of XP and keep all the settings, I decided to just reformat my hard drive and install windows 7 as a custom install fees. Now, I can't activate Windows 7 because it claims that I do not have a version of windows installed on this hard drive. Is it possible (armed with my XP and Windows 7 product keys) I can activate my software? Or should I go through the hassle to format my drive again, stick XP on it simply to crush it with Windows 7 so I can activate it? Feels like a bit of an oversight for XP to 7 plants of valuation. Thanks for any help you can offer!

My last computer was shipped with Vista Home Premium. I bought Windows 7 Pro update for this computer. The death of this machine, I bought another HP with Windows 7 Home Premium pre-installed. I reused my disc of Windows 7 Pro upgrade successfully. I have Windows 7 recovery discs that were created before the installation of Windows 7 Pro upgrade. Now, I pre-ordered Windows 8 Pro. When it happens, I would use my Windows 7 recovery discs (Home Premium) to bring the machine to its original state, and then install Windows 8 Pro Upgrade. Then I would use the disc of Windows 7 Pro upgrade to upgrade to another computer that is running Windows 7 Home Premium. Will there be problems reusing this disc again?

    Hi flnettles,

Thanks for posting in the Microsoft Community.

If it is a full license or upgrade retail - Yes. You can move it to another computer as long as it is installed on a single computer at a time (and if it's a Windows 7 Upgrade version the new computer must have its own XP/Vista license qualification). The previous installation of Windows 7 on the old computer must be in the format / deleted. You will have to perhaps call Microsoft and explain what happened to complete activation. Turning it on the second computer will automatically be in effect 'disable' the license for the first computer. The key works with 32 and 64 bit, but can only be installed at a time.

If it is licensed OEM - No.
OEM licenses, including Windows preinstalled on a computer before purchase and Windows purchased separately, are related to the first computer, they are installed on and cannot be transferred to another computer. To install Windows on another computer, you will need to buy another copy.

  • EliteBook 2570p: Windows 7 Pro OEM activation error after reinstall onto the new HARD drive

    Greetings!

I had to replace my laptop HARD drive and then clean installed windows iso downloads, burned on a dvd.

I first tried Windows 10 (build 1511), then Windows 7 Pro 64 bit with SP1. Or activate using the key OEM COA sticker.

I tried MS activation of phone also, but they said that they could not generate a confirmation key. They tried to transfer me to "get windows up and running support" but could not get through.

The first activation says invalid key without being connected to the internet, which makes me wonder if there is an inconsistency between my product key and SLIC data, (which I do not have much understanding).

The service 'Ask Tech' at Microsoft tried to sell me a license at a high cost, which I don't think I should need because I have the license OEM Windows 10 retail.

I don't have HP recovery disks (and did not expect to need).

    Any advice would be welcome!

The problem is that you should NOT use Win7 ISO downloads to reinstall your PC.  Given that your PC came with a preinstalled HP Win7 OEM version, and is NOT available for download, I have to assume that what you used to reinstall a retail version.

And the problem is that the commercial version only lights up with a retail key.  The product key that came with your PC and is printed on the COA sticker, is a key to OEM HP product - and that cannot be used to activate any other than the version from HP OEM version of Win7.

Your best bet at this point, is to restore your PC using HP recovery media - and then perform the upgrade of Win10 after that.

It is a DVD and CD set that will erase the hard drive (removing all data, applications and settings, reinstall the original OS, drivers and utilities for HP. In some cases, you will be able to order a USB instead of discs.  You must order at HP; they cannot be downloaded.

You can look online for recovery from the paged media related: http://support.hp.com/us-en/drivers

Once there, enter your product name or number. On your software page and download the drivers, select your operating system and version. Click on "Update".  If the HP recovery support is available for your computer, down near the bottom of the page, you will see an entry for the command Recovery Media-CD/DVD/USB. Click on the symbol '+' to expand this entty and click on order to press for more details.

Or, if you prefer, you can do the same by contacting HP Customer Service:

If you live in the United States or the Canada, details are on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/phone-assist.html#section1

If you live elsewhere, contact details are on this page: http://www8.hp.com/us/en/contact-hp/ww-contact-us.html

Note that if HP no longer provides a recovery media for your model, a few other sites, you can check are: http://www.computersurgeons.com/ and http://www.restoredisks.com/

    Good luck

  • Windows 8 Pro - not activation

    Here's my problem.

I had Windows 8 Pro Portable one. I was using the developer preview of Windows 8.1 for awhile now.
Now that the final version of W8.1 will be available next month, I thought to install Windows 8 and put my phone to receive 8.1.
But now, the Pro 8 Win is not activating. I get a message that says that the key is not valid, and I need to get another key.
Is it because I had Win Pro 8 approximately 2-3 months back that has been activated and I try to turn it on again?
If this is the case, how can I get this product active now and download the Windows Pro 8.1 for me that I am eligible?
I know there are a lot of questions related to that, but please reply or give me a link where I can find an appropriate response.

    Try again by phone:

    1. press the Windows key + X , and then clickrun, and then type: slui.exe 4

    2. then press the ENTER"" key.

    3. Select your "country" in the list.

    4. choose the option "activate phone".

    5. stay on the phone (do not select/press all options) and wait for a person to help you with the activation.

    6. explain your problem clearly to the support person.

    Please note:

To install a Windows 8 upgrade version, you must already have Windows 7, Windows Vista, or Windows XP installed on your PC.

If you have formatted the drive until the upgrade of Windows 8 version has been installed, you will not be able to use your upgrade product key to activate Windows 8. To activate Windows 8, you will need to install your previous version of Windows, and then reinstall Windows 8. Help with the activation process, contact technical support.
