Windows associated .cab a zip file and not a .cab file

Someone is trying to install a simple VBA program that I wrote, but it does not work because (apparently) the file .cab appears in his file as a Zip file manager. The Setup file so asks to insert a disk, because it apparently does not recognize the .cab file in a .cab file. What is the procedure to change the file association?

Sounds like it didn't clear the box (which should clear by default as a security measure) when he

use the option 'Open' or 'Open with' option to explore, or otherwise dispose of a file and changed the default file association.

Apparently the possibility to restore file associations has been hampered by changes in XP vs Win7, so you

you will need to make a fix via the registry.

The article below is a list of several file extension registry entries-

  • Windows 7 cannot open zip files

I'm almost certain that, in the past, my Dell Inspiron 580 with Windows 7 could open zip files.

Last month I had to replace my internal hard drive and reinstall Windows from the disks that I bought from Dell.  Now when I try to open a zip file I downloaded, I have an alert that says that Windows Explorer is unable to open it.

I see a lot of different programs, you can buy or download free, claiming to allow you to decompress the files.  Isn't Windows supposed to be able to open zip se files?

Is there any downloadable for free, zip file openers that work with Windows 7 64 bit?

    Hello Jumprun,

Compress or decompress files isn't windows features. Software of third party such as WinZip, WinRAR, 7Zip are used to compress and decompress files. You can download them by clicking the program you want to download.
    WinZip
    WinRAR

Downloaded zip files.  Accidentally tried 'open with' windows photo viewer.   All of the changed files zip.  Cannot find what program to use as the default value for the zip files now.   Tried several that are matched in 'open with', but did not work, and when I watched, I didn't know what to try.   Can anyone help?  I checked the settings in the Control Panel, but I don't know we can do to bring back the zip files, so I can check out them.

    Hi PoJo1

    Go to the following site.

Difficulties of file Association for Windows 7

In the file types list, right-click on the "Zip" type and select Save target under... Download the file to the desktop.

Go to the desktop, click on the zip_fix_w7.reg file and select the Merge option. If you get a pop-up message on the registry, select OK to merge.

This will refresh the built-in zip functions.

    I hope this helps.

Thank you for using Windows 7

    Hello

    Here is the Vista Forums.

If you have uninstalled then reinstalled Defender using Vista.

Defender is part of the Vista operating system.

Read this information on the Defender:

If you use Norton, AVG, Avira, Microsoft Security Essentials, McAfee, etc. the default action is for Windows Defender must be disabled, that these AntiVirus programs have their own Antispyware Applications.

    There is nothing to worry.

Using both programs at the same time can cause system conflicts, etc.

If you are using one of the above AntiVirus programs, this Information from David O - Support Engineer shows you how to manually enable Windows Defender (disregard information from uninstalling; not possible in Vista):

"Go to start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services. Look for Windows Defender.

Right click and select Properties , ensure that Startup Type is automatic.

Once modified, click apply and OK.

Quit and restart your computer. Check the back take the same path to confirm that Windows Defender has started"

    .

If you want to have additional protection against malware using the version FREE of Malwarebytes AntiMalware:

  • How to install Windows XP SP1 from the disc and not an error message indicating "unable to install from the web?"

My laptop with Windows XP home (2002, upgraded to SP3), crashed after almost 10 years of perfect service. Then I reinstalled my OS (not OEM, bought and paid for a full installation of Windows XP Home, 2002), and after 3 hands hours hardware controllers and drivers, installation was finally able to connect to internet to make updates on Windows XP and hardware. Arriving at Windows Update of the site, I realized that I couldn't do web updates up-to-date, because my old version of Windows. It will not be updated to SP3, because I need SP1 or higher. So, I tried to download and install SP1a. Error says that I can not reach the server. So, I download SP1a on my other computer, burn a CD and try to install SP1a directly from CD. Now, I get an error message stating "error installing SP1a, unable to reach the server. Try again when you have access to the web... Hello! I'm not trying to install from the web... why this message? I even made my computer has been getting a good connection ethernet, just in case my computer needed to communicate with? While my computer has been updated by CD.

It's probably something simple, but I'm frustrated. Help when the first thing I see on the Microsoft Update site is a special page, telling me that I am not able to update Windows. Help, please!

You must use this upgrade path:
Gold XP to XP SP2 to XP SP3.
Note that installing SP1a is TOTALLY USELESS! (Not only that, the file available these days is EVIL, because you knew.)
    Here are the detailed instructions:

    1. download the installation files from SP2, SP3, IE8 and Microsoft Security Essentials, which is an effective antivirus/antimalware program. I prefer to keep these on a USB key, but this is optional. Here are the links to all the installation of three files:

    http://www.Microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?ID=28 (for SP2)

    http://www.Microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?ID=24 (for SP3)

(You can TOTALLY ignore the message "intended for it professionals"!)

    http://www.Microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&ID=43 (for IE8)

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/products/security-essentials (for MMS)

    2. disconnect Internet.

    3. temporarily disable the automatic updates.

    4. install SP2. Restart twice.

5 install the SP3. Restart twice.

6 switch to IE8. Restart twice.

    7 install an Antivirus software.

(What happens very often is that someone has their software antivirus running as they try to install SP3, which often translates into chaos! "This is why it must be done after installing SP3 and IE).

8 make sure that firewall Windows is activated (it should be).

(Now you can physically reconnect to the Internet.)

9 visit Windows Update to download and install only the critical security updates.

10 re - enable automatic updates.

After the back if you need guidance.

  • Windows 7 is hard to use and not easy to use

    I hate windows 7

Windows 7 - I hate that I want to use xp - but this * system is so hard to use, I can't change that - just look at what all these people say - if she so fine, so why all complaints.

It is not easy to use, it is not easy to change settings and he wants to watch a file whenever I use it b/c it can not read! what the devil who is all about. I teach and have thousands of files that I don't have time to waste on this. It also wont let me load several programs that I use a lot-just try to disable security to get things loaded is a joke - I still yet get adobe contribute here, b/c, it will allow him to finish loading. It seems to also have this crazy zoom deserving, I can not turn off, do not say to go to the control panel and mouse/touch pad b/c who don't work-i spent countless hours trying just to get this feature disabled.

7 can be friendly, your business and the people who sell and the reapir this system, b/c he puts money in their pockets. but for most everyday users, this thing is a pain. I'm seriously thinking of send the computer back whole and get an Apple.

Thanks to all the answers - although some of you thought that I was not specific enough - none of your solutions worked either--it's like buying a car and then find out it does not work when it's rainy, I have files I want and need to use every day and that way just takes too much time!-solution all computer will come back!

Please, go to the Macintosh platform.  I don't know who will help you...
(* tries to keep a straight face *)

Better yet, go to Ubuntu.  Surely you can easily learn that with your "Go Getter" attitude!
(* more difficult and more difficult to keep a straight face *)

-You really cela.  Just keep running Windows _ (fill in the blank with that that you have as / got used to / won't change of).  I'm sure all the other hardware and software suppliers will continue to support any product you want to use in this legacy operating system - even though it's brand-new.
    ( * No, I can do.  Hold together... *)

Seriously - I don't know what you were hoping to accomplish with your post in a peer-to-peer forum.  Threatening to go to another OS platform just after you said, 'I don't want to get used to it?  Guess what happens when you go to a completely new platform.  "Get used to it" or "report again".  And these other platforms - Yes, they are going to change so IMPORTANT with new versions too.  Sometimes for the better (according to you) and sometimes for the worse (in your opinion).

Things change everywhere.  You don't have to it (not everyone) and you are welcome to try and get it changed / change it to where you like it - but no matter what - things will continue to change around you.

Windows 7 (and soon enough, the next version of Windows and so on down the line - or in the BONE of you choice here) has been and things wrinkled around her, change.  Other suppliers began to do things which * has * worked on this version (now) and can work on the next version.  Some of these suppliers are probably products you use and that you may want the next revision- but if you pass the platforms/stay with the old platform because you don't want to try to "make it yours" and learn new ways of doing things - you will be left out.  You'll probably complain to suppliers (or as many do, complain back from the operating system manufacturer - as they * control * what other companies are doing in terms of offering support for their products.)

I use Windows, I use * nix and I use Macintosh.  If you already do all the three too - then deleting your life maybe not a problem.  Go ahead.  Just offering you should THINK of everything before you decide to take a more drastic measure that might be necessary.

  • IE9 changes the windows mail preview pane header police and not show attachments

This question was apparently answered by uninstalling ie9, but the time is coming where ie9 will be installed by windows update.  I have a laptop running Vista Edition family Basic, and a desktop running vista Home premium and both have the same problem since ie9 installed.  The preview pane header seems to have had its fonts changed or altered to the leaner and the trombone for attachments disappeared completely.  Remove ie9 is not a solution.

WYSIWYG. IE9 is not compatible with Windows Mail. When the update is provided by WU/MU, hide it.

It's an easy fix, once you know what to look for.

Go to the desktop and right click on the taskbar. Click Properties,

On the first tab, there is an option to "See the Windows Store apps on the taskbar" uncheck the box.

Then go to the Navigation tab uncheck "Boot to the desktop."

That should do it. If it is not, please let me know.
