Windows Explorer hangs when copying large files on external USB drive

I'm trying to copy files over 1 GB of my pc to a WD MyBook external drive. After about 10% on the progress indicator, Windows Explorer crashes. When I cancel the work, nothing happens until I unplug the USB. Then I have the pc returns to normal.

During my research, I discovered that a lot of people have this problem. I have tried many suggestions, but without result. The last thing I tried was a full format the C: drive with a fresh install of Vista. Copy a large file gave me the message 'Calculating time' infinite. After you have installed SP1 reappeared the problem as explained above.

Some of the things I've tried:
check the external hard drive: no problem found and the problem occurs on all my MesLivres 3
safe mode
Superfetching disabled
update the motherboard bios

Now my last request resource helps professionals. If I don't find a solution I'll have to go back to XP, achieve Win7 or one rating for Mac... a lot of things to think about.

Best regards
Rafael

Try to copy in safe mode. If can be a slow usb port. Try anther one.

Good luck.

Windows Explorer crashes when opening files on the desktop.

The accident occurred when going back (or hit the back button) when a desktop folder is used.

After a few weeks of frustration, I've isolated a few things that makes it a little easier to deal with, and maybe this will help some members of the community help me pinpoint the problem.

I've exhausted trying to use system restore system backups.

I discovered the stops 'window launch folder in a separate process' the 5-10 sec reload of the Windows desktop.

Open the folder by opening a window of the Explorer than navigating to C; \Users\USER-ME\Desktop does NOT cause the error; just when you open the folder 'from' the office.  (which goes against the convenience to keep files open on the desktop at first project)

I suppose that as a last resort, I could start using a location (like C; \MyDesktop) place the files in there, and then create shortcuts to them.

I was about to do an installation of Windows o/s before you find the option 'split the process' & isolate when & how it occurred (as first of all, I thought it was totally random)

The only unusual thing that occurred near the time of the problem was trying to uninstall [Google Drive] that crashed due to a security locking violation.  I reinstalled today, uninstalled mode safe, found guilty folder (... AppData \Local\Google\..) used 'Take Ownership' and then finished. But after a registry cleaning & several resets, the problem persists, then maybe it was just a coincidence.

There are a lot of reasons, it may happen, but my guess is a failed shell extension.  She's going to Extensions are what adds options to the context menus you see when you right-click on various things.  The hull of the Office is different from cases, even if a program (like Google) added an option to the menu in both places, so it is possible for one to have a problem.  You might be familiar with the common shell extensions, like "Scan this file with Norton" click on menus and others.

You can use a program like shell ShellExView to disable the extensions one by one to help out.  Although my personal dose of this situation is to create a new user account on the computer, then do drag your files into the new account, and delete the one damaged.

  • Re: Satellite Pro U400-160 - freezes when copying larger files or videos

    Hello:

I have a Satellite Pro U400-160 and a VERBATIM external hard drive USB eSATA combo.

If I turn on AHCI mode recognizes the drive, but when copying the video files or large file size, the system is frozen. However if I remove the mode AHCI works correctly. I have the version 9.8.9.1023 Intel (r) Matrix Storage Manager and my laptop BIOS v4.0 and Windows Vista Business.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hello

Normally the AHCI mode has nothing to do with an external HARD drive. It is only important for the internal HARD disk if you install Windows.

Anyway, you have installed all the updates of Windows for Vista?
In addition, you should test another external HARD disk or with another cable.

    Welcome them

  • Trying to move a large file on external hard drive

I have a 119gig .bkf file on my desktop and I am trying to move to a new disk 320gig external hard. I get a message that there is not enough space on the disk. If I reformat the external hard drive from FAT to NTFS it work or do I start the backup utility and save it to the external hard drive? On my desk .bkf file took almost 8 hours to create. Don't want to do it again if I don't have to. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time!

You guessed correctly the problem. FAT32 is a 4 GB file size limitation. You need to format the drive NTFS. MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!

  • Windows 7 professional XP Mode - does not recognize external USB drives or internal DVD drive

The DHCP server is down or does not.

The firewall on your computer blocks on broadcast network traffic.
Network interface card or your computer driver does not work correctly.

  • Windows Explorer crashes when looking for files, video or music

When you search for files, music Explorer, or the video freezes, as well as all other open programs (after displaying what he found), it then displays an error message saying that it should close.

    can anyone help please?

If the problem occurred recently and the BONES have worked correctly all this time around then you can try to restore the operating system to the start time.
You can use the Windows XP tool called system restore.

  • Windows 8: copy of files on external hard drive, transfer file dialog hangs up

I'm on Windows 8 (version 6.2.9200).  This has never been a problem, but these last days Explorer was hung up while that copy files to an external drive (my iPod, by the way).  It will start the process very well and then grind halt.

On cancellation, it remains like that until I kill explorer.exe via Process Explorer:

I tried the "sfc/scannow" and rebooted, but that made no difference.  I tried multiple USB ports on my laptop (the two USB 2 + 3), I slipped and fell and ctrl + c ctrl + v, but that did not help either one.  What is strange is that I can copy files without problem.  What kind of a problem with a corrupted file that I am trying to copy? (He's hooked on "after the storm-#fulllength.wav" and a few other individual files more than once).  I opened this wav without problem and discovered a ton of markers of time in there, so I deleted all the and saved. He hung up to 99% and would not let me Cancel:

I think it must be a problem of files rather than deliver an Explorer, however ad I is because it has never been a problem before, and I was able to save my music files on my iPod with no problem, and other suspects included.

Thoughts?  It drives me crazy because a simple copy and paste should not be too much of a hassle!  Thank you

UPDATE: after cleaning, by the way, (disk cleanup manually purge the caches, defragmentation) and reboot to make chkdsk, it installed more than updated and has no problem.

As to what caused this that I'm still not sure, and I have no idea which one of meanings seems to remedy. Whatever it is, all good for now. Files backed up successfully!

  • The computer hangs when copying the data on the hard drive

    * Problem *:

My computer freezes whenever I have transfer large amounts_ of the data on the disc from my computer. * It doesn't have this problem with my C drive *.

First detected this problem while I was transferring some data in LAN. This problem occurs even when I copy data to my C drive to the D drive.

    Action taken:

-Performed a full scan of my computer, found some viruses, but the problem persists
-Do you have a check disk via Windows, as well as the TuneUp utility, no problem.

    Data sheet:
    OS: Windows 7 Professional 32-bit
    Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo t7200 @ 2.00GHz
    RAM: 1 GB DDR2 - SDRAM
Hard drive: TOSHIBA MK1234GSX ATA Device(120GB)
    No partitions: 2

    Hello

It of difficult to say what might be wrong here but if the question appears only using the second partition, then I recommend to check the State of the HARD drive.
I use a very good freeware tool called Drive Fitness Test.
Use google to download this software.

It creates a boot disk that allows you to test the drive HARD and of course the two partitions.
If the error would be detected, then it means that the HARD drive failure could be the reason for this

  • Windows 7 does not recognize SimpleTech 250 GB external USB drive

I read the threads on this topic, and I've not seen anyone else able to get this working.

Just bought a new computer with Win 7.  Drive has worked on Win XP.  I checked in the Device Manager, but the real problem is that there is no driver for the Simple Tech drive.  They must have been purchased by Hitachi, simpletech is now a product and not supported.  Find it me hard to believe that an external drive USB 2.0 does not work with Win 7.  There must be another driver, that we can use to get this willingness to work.

Try other USB ports, still does not work. Restarted, on or off before and after the restart... nothing etc issues.  It shows in the device with a yellow Manager!, but can't get any further.

Interestingly enough it show a device "usb mass storage" under usb controllers.  See photo:

Is it really possible that this player will work with Win 7?

    Thank you for your help.

    Hello

According to the Windows 7 Compatibility Center, this disc is compatiblewith Windows 7.

You must download and install any additional software to make it work with Windows 7. Click on the link below and download the software for your hard drive.

    Hi HBrown Gordon,

In order to focus more on your particular situation, I shared your post to a new thread.

Please take a look at the following information through Wunders in a previous post:

The work of Windows Explorer is to consider what is in the disk and its directory and present this information to the user.  If the disk or the disk directories are corrupted, it confuses Windows Explorer and can lead to lock.  Whenever Windows Explorer crashes, the first step should be to achieve a check disk (chkdsk) with the /f or/r option.

"How to perform disk error in Windows XP check"

Check disk can usually take hours depending on the speed and the size of the hard drive.  If corruption is present, it may take more time.  Plan on execution of the audit during the night or when you won't need your computer for awhile.  In addition, if corruption is present, files may be lost.  If possible, save what you can before you run the disk check.

    Hope that helps!
