I found this solution on an Avast forum (seems as if some Avast users have this problem) and it worked for me.

Open the dialog box run (twice) and then paste into the pressing next OK after every time:

regsvr32 jscript.dll

regsvr32 vbscript.dll

I did a registry backup first - just in case - but now my WMP is back to normal (black)

    Method 1.

    Try to use the Troubleshoot utility to see if that solves the problem.

    a. open the troubleshooting Windows Media Player settings Troubleshooter by clicking the Start button, then Control Panel.

    (b) in the search box, type "Troubleshooting" and then click Troubleshooting.

    c. click on show alland then click the Windows Media Player settings.

    Method 2.

    A clean boot to test if any element of service or third party application startup is causing this issue.

    Note: Once you have finished troubleshooting, follow step 3 in the article to start on normal startup.

    Method 3.

    You can update the video card driver and check.

    Method 4.

    I suggest that you can exercise SFC scan and check if that helps. The SFC/SCANNOW command analyzes all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with appropriate Microsoft versions.

    I suggest you to see these steps:

    Step 1:

    You need to perform a clean boot to find the program that is causing and then disable or remove.

    Note: When you are finished troubleshooting, follow the steps as explained in the article to reset the computer to start as usual.

    Step 2:

    I suggest you to disable any program of security on your computer and check if it solves the problem.
    After reviewing the question you must reactivate the security on your computer program.

    When I play a video in media player, it is all bright and pastel colors.  I had this before but can't remember how to fix it.

    Windows media player has color controls in playing, right click, select Video adjustment and improvements. Very probably messed up your up to in some way, the default is ok.

    2. must arrive with a particular DVD or all of them?
    3. do you have a DVD decoder installed on your computer?
    4. you use starter edition of windows 7?
    5. What is the resolution on your computer?
    6. have you installed a codec on your computer?
    If you have installed a codec on your computer the I suggest you to uninstall the codec.

    Try to reduce the hardware acceleration again and check if it makes a difference.
     
    a. open the screen resolution by clicking the Start button, Control Panel, and then, under appearance and personalization, click on adjust the screen resolution.
    b. click on advanced settings, troubleshoot tab and then click on change settings.
    c. move the hardware acceleration slider toward none to reduce or turn off video hardware acceleration.
    d. click OK and then click Restart now.

    So, I recently tried to change the color of my windows media player to match the kind of dextre, theme of blood spatter that I have going on, but I can not find the color picker. It's not where it was, if it exists at all in media player 12.

    Have you had success playing other video DVDs?

    Maybe you need a DVD decoder?

    (FWIW... it is always preferable, if you create a system restore
    point before installing any software or updates)

    1. What do you mean when you say 'configuration settings can be set incorrectly?
    2. What was the result of the troubleshooter?
    3. Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling the multimedia player of the control panel?
    4. Are you the same screen when you open the media player?
