Windows Update - How do you keep updates hidden and updates to software that is not installed to appear?

First issue.  Microsoft Silverlight guard display itself.  I hid at least twice since I reinstalled Windows 7 a few months ago and it's annoying.

Second issue.  How can I stop Windows Update to provide updates for software that is not installed?  I installed Microsoft office with only Word, Excel, Access and Outlook and yet it is the display updates for PowerPoint and PowerPoint Viewer that I specifically not have installed.  Once again, it is annoying to have to check updates to software that is not yet installed on my machine.

After carefully installing Windows 7, Windows update tells me that I must install a critical update for the graphics card to Nvidia 9600 m GS on my Touchsmart, but every time I start the process, the download fails with the error code 80070005. • CPU ankles 95-99% stuck on svchost.exe after that Windows update Nov 12 patches to not install

Automatic update of Windows was put on 'On' on the morning of November 13, 2013, when I received the notice of Microsoft system tray that updates of Windows patches were ready to be installed on my computer (XP sp3, IE8, MSE).

Updates proceeds to installation with the updated bars before the normal close.

Updates is apparently blocked at the first update. I let it run for about 15 minutes before I made a hard stop. I thought that maybe I had lost to the Internet because the update seemed stuck on the first and took too much time, it seemed.

Next start, computer slows almost stopped after a few minutes.

Guilty is svchost.exe SYSTEM alternating between 95 and 99% of my system resources. I turn it off and computer returned to normal.

Has done research on the web, stop automatic updates and processor svchost problem disappeared, unless I went to Microsoft updates and svchost.exe Web page re - would seem to consume almost all of the CPU resources while bars update Microsoft constantly scanned my system for the latest upgrades necessary.

Spending a day to try various fixes posted on the internet. A Microsoft Fixit said that he there had errors in the update and fixed all but one saying registration number was bad (said he couldn't fix that). Despite everything, still the same problem.

On the same day, an error was unable to update the definitions of virus on MSE, but for some reason, the next day (14) updated crossed.

Update: some progress: I leave svchost cogitate on the webpage update from Ms. After about 1/2 hour, the updated hotfix list showed. I tried to install it, but not updates managed to install. I am currently re - try, as suggested on the Web page.

Also tried the command "net stop" method mentioned in several places, as a tool of Malewarebytes Anti-Root running. Nothing.

Tried the fix for IE8 security as suggested, nothing.

Tried system restore, but I must have something wrongly configured with it because it was not able to restore any earlier date, I took. Bad luck.

Never had a big problem with my set-up in all the years I've been running XP sp3, until now.

Next thing I'll try is Park on the side of Windows Update for an hour or two, with the idea that maybe my processor is in need of more time to digest something.

I see that others have had this problem, but not necessarily with patch release on November 12.

UPDATE: some progress, perhaps. 1/2 hour parked page update of Windows, with SVChost churning away, and I got a list of patches. I tried to install, but all of them failed to install. I try a re - install, as suggested.

Let me propose a summary of how to fix the MSE / Windows Update problem and the svchost problem:

1st thing to do is to disable the automatic updates window. This will keep your computer against svchost.exe freeze for now.

2nd, follow the instructions in Xircal to check that you have "BITS" listed in your list of "services". Correct it if not.

3rd, IE remove it from your list of programs, and then reinstall it, making your first update of the IE rollup, as suggested previously.

That he "should" do and you can activate the automatic updates on svchost.exe should return to normal. Proceed with the update of Windows and MSE as usual.

  • Windows Update for powerpoint viewer wil not install - error code 0 x 4397

    The update is

Security for PowerPoint Viewer 2003 (KB969615) update
    Any suggestions?

It will probably not install because most likely the update is looking for the original source.

As this is a security for the 2003 Viewer update, why not get rid of it all together and download the new version-

  • How do you keep users from creating directories deeper than 260 characters of the root of the drive?

In Windows, it seems impossible to create/join the files with a path longer than 260 characters.

Well, not completely: you can create these files if you create a shortcut or point a reader shared inside the path, but that's exactly how this problem gets so bad: a user creates a share X: pointing to \\myserver\longdirname\evenlongerdirname\verylongdirname\etc\verylongfilename

then it creates a file in X:\evenlongerdirnamethanYouHaveEverSeen\SuperLongDirNameJustLongEnoughToBe260FromTheRoot

Note: the names of directories must be long, you can also create a shorter longer string of names of directories (a\b\c\d\e\f\g...)

now, someone trying to open this file of \\myserver fail miserable. In fact, windows behaves a bit ridiculous and sometimes silently ignores files. I've seen this happen when people copy a folder of installation deep inside a fileshare: the installation program is a DVD or CD and a subscription contains 1000 directories, some are more than 260 tank when opened from the root. Then you get really weird behaviour: files ignored!

    As 260 characters was probably very well when the disks were<10GB but="" if="" you="" have="" 1="" tb="" drive,="" it's="" not="" too="" hard="" to="" end="" up="" with="" directories="" that="" are="" way="" deeper="" than="" 260="" characters.="" so="" i="" predict="" that="" there="" will="" be="" a="" time="" soon="" where="" ntfs="" needs="" to="" be="" adapted="" to="" be="" able="" to="" use="" large="" disks="" decently.="" this="" is="" also="" made="" worse="" because="" people="" create="" files="" with="" really="" bad="" names="" (e.g.="" a="" outlook="" msg="" files="" will="" be="" called="" the="" same="" as="" its="" subject="" line,="" fun="">

Don't tell people don't do that, I see it in my everyday environment, and it breaks a lot of programs (and then the bad programmer is blamed for drawback of Windows: "you can't even open a file named a.txt")

Question: How do you keep the users to create a file that is > 260 characters if we take into account the root of the drive, rather than a part under?

    I expect your reply.

    You are welcome.

And certainly let us know how it works.

Here is some other information about the Windows updates for you, I put in place some time and which you may find useful if you are having problems with Windows updates:

Microsoft gives sometimes you updates for the 3rd party hardware: graphics, network cards, etc.

You must only obtain the latest drivers for them to the site of the real hardware manufacturer, like Microsoft normally does not have these latest drivers available as Microsoft invokes the material part 3rd RTOS provide.

But unfortunately, the only way to know which is the update of the problem is to install them one by one, until you find the 'wrong' for your installation.

You can do a system restore to get back until it has been installed (which is NOT the best way to remove an update) or follow this method:

    'Remove an update'

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/remove-an-update

'Remove an update - Windows 7'

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/remove-update#1TC=Windows-7

When you have found the issue of update of the list of updates which is presented > then right click on the update problem > select Hide update > and it will not be available to you once again

"How to hide or show an update of Windows Vista"

    http://www.Vistax64.com/tutorials/72491-Windows-Update.html

    Or the other of these two update settings will give you the chance to see what you want to install through Windows updates;

Download updates but let me choose whether to install them - if you select this option, Windows will download the updates on your computer, but not install them automatically. If you want to install updates, then you must install them manually. You should only select this option if you have a reason to not install updates automatically. Only advanced users should use this option.

Check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them - if you select this option, you'll be alerted when there are new updates available for download and install. You can then choose to download and install the updates that you want. This option should really be reserved for people who know exactly which updates they need, or those who have little access to the Internet.

But remember you normally only have problems with hardware 3rd party drivers. Other updates are to improve the Performance and security of your system

    See you soon.

Hi, when I click on Windows Update it says that he cannot work and maybe I have to restart the computer. But when I do it always appears with the same. In services, it is configured to automatically update windows and is started. Can anyone help?

    Hello

    Method 1:
You can run the fixit. Check out the following link.
The problem with Microsoft Windows Update is not working
    http://support.Microsoft.com/mats/windows_update/
    Method 2:
You can run the fix provided in the link and check out them.
Resolve security issues to protect and secure Windows automatically
    http://support.Microsoft.com/mats/windows_security_diagnostic/
    Method 3:
You can read the following article.
Cannot install updates in Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2008 and Windows Server 2008 R2
    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/2509997
Note: this section, method, or task contains steps that tell you how to modify the registry. However, serious problems can occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Therefore, make sure that you proceed with caution. For added protection, back up the registry before you edit it. Then you can restore the registry if a problem occurs. For more information about how to back up and restore the registry, click on the number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base. How to back up and restore the registry in Windows:
    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows-Vista/back-up-the-registry
Note: if bad sectors are found by running the check disk utility and if the attempt to recover bad sectors is verified when checking the disk for errors, data in the bad sector might be lost in the attempt to recover bad sectors.
    Method 4:
I also suggest that you scan your computer with the Microsoft Security Scanner, which would help us to get rid of viruses, spyware and other malicious software.
The Microsoft Security Scanner is a downloadable security tool for free which allows analysis at the application and helps remove viruses, spyware and other malware. It works with your current antivirus software.
    http://www.Microsoft.com/security/scanner/en-us/default.aspx
Note: The Microsoft Safety Scanner ends 10 days after being downloaded. To restart a scan with the latest definitions of anti-malware, download and run the Microsoft Safety Scanner again.
Important: when running Scan disk hard if bad sectors are found on the hard drive when parsing tent repair this sector if all available on which data may be lost.
    It will be useful.

I get this error "failed to configure windows updates. returning from changes. do not turn off your computer. The computer is a Samsung Ativ tab 5 and I got it for a little over a week.

    Windows Update error 0 x 80070490 (2014-02-10-t-11_25_11A) - fixed

I have been through ALL the steps as described in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949358. I have had no success.
One thing that bothers me, is in the configuration of the system, I have a service called true vector Internet Monitor (Zone Alarm) and when the value disable as in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135, it is the only service still running when you perform a clean restart. I don't know if this affects the Automatic Updates/configuration or not.

    Hello

Thanks for trying to help. Now my computer seems to be up-to-date.
I followed your steps but MicrosoftFixit50202.msi did not like "my OS is incompatible. I use windows 8.  I couldn't run this in default or aggressive.
I did go in Control Panel and disable antivirus and firewall Zone Alarm and reset Windows defender by default.
I did IE default web browser I have prob changed when I got to the computer.
I then returned to set up a clean boot and this time I managed to disable the true vector Internet Monitor (Zone Alarm) to run.
I ran the reset troubleshooting of Windows with the same result as before is to say:
Recent updates - not fixed installation problems
Search for missing or corrupted - files detected
I think I have restarted my computer at this stage and then tried to update again.
It has not yet, but with the error, I got an error code and a link to help. I don't have not noticed this before. I followed the help and ran about 5 command prompts that have to do with the renaming of files I think.
Then I tried updating again and this time 38 45 updates succeeded. I then ran the update again and it seemed to work on the other 7 updates.
Although Windows Update said I was now updated, I was skeptical as when this whole thing started is started when I got the "windows installs updates" and then "failed to configure updates. Returning... etc"then I restarted my computer. At the start, there was no message on try to configure the updates, then, how do I know they are configured and working as it should?
    Thank you.

Windows 8 How do you do the column bookmarks 'flexible '?

Sounds that you use the bookmarks Menu button that opens a drop-down list.

Firefox has two buttons bookmark with a star in the window customize.

A single star button has a drop-marker that opens the bookmarks menu and may appear on the Navigation toolbar or on the bookmarks toolbar if the menu bar is hidden.

The other Star without the drop-marker button opens the bookmarks in the sidebar (view > sidebar > bookmarks).

    Johnny,

This fix is a little strange, but it works.  There is a patch of mshelper.de which I think is the Denmark.  In any case, the solution is in Danish or in another language.

    The link is:

    http://download.mshelper.de/mshregs/winUpdRestore! v27.exe

When you open click on the button marked "be."
    Then click on Installieren

A screen gray pop up, begin to reset all the settings of windows update.

At the end a green screen comes press the letter 'J', and then press ENTER.  It's asking you if you want to open the windows updates.  I always say yes/Ja.

As I said this is a weird solution but it worked every time I've never used it.

Let me know if it works for you
