WIRELESS IS CONNECTED BUT TRENDY TOP COMPUTERS WON'T RECOGNIZE EXTERNAL HARD DISKS ATTACHED TO THE MAIN OFFICE

(desktop) computer main and two other laptops running windows xp

all computers are connected to a common wireless network

two external hard drives are connected to the main computer

No laptop computer connected to the wireless network will recogniae

external hard drives

the hard drives are configured as shared

What version of XP (Home, Pro, Media Center) and what service pack is installed?

If you have XP Pro or XP Media Center, is simple file sharing on or off?

Can you share other files and printers among the 3 computers?

You try to share the directory root of the external drives (for example, E:\ and F:\)?  Note that "computer administrators can only share the root of the drive. See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/304040

All computers are in the same subnet?  On each computer, open a command prompt window and type
ipconfig {press Enter}

You will see something like this (if the office is wired rather than wireless, the output so that it will display something like 'Card Ethernet connection to the Local network'):

Ethernet adapter wireless network connection:

Connection specific DNS suffix. :
... The IP address: 192.168.1.102
... Subnet mask: 255.255.255.0.
... Default gateway. : 192.168.1.1.

All 3 computers should have the identical "default gateway".  Each computer must have an IP address that has the same 3 initial bytes as the default gateway.  In the example above, this means that everyone should have an IP address that resembles 192.168.1.xxx.

See this old but still relevant to old MS MVP Malke networking advice:

File sharing / print

Excellent, comprehensive, but easy to understand article on sharing files/printer under Vista. Contains information about sharing printers and files, and the folders:

http://TechNet.Microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx

For XP, start by running the Network Setup Wizard the on all machines (see warning in section A below).

Problems sharing files between computers on a network are usually caused by 1) a misconfigured firewall or a firewall neglected (including a dynamic firewall in a virtual private network); or (2) inadvertently run two firewalls such as the firewall of Windows and a third-party firewall. and/or (3) do not have accounts to the same users and passwords on all computers in the workgroup. (4) tries to create actions where the operating system does not.

A. configure the firewall on all machines to allow traffic to local area network (LAN) as being approved. With the Windows Firewall, it means which allows file sharing / print on the Exceptions tab normally run the XP Network Setup Wizard will take care of this for these machines. The only "witch hunt", it will turn on the XPSP2 Windows Firewall. If you are not running a third-party firewall or you have an antivirus with "Internet Worm Protection" (like Norton 2006/07) which acts as a firewall, you're fine.  With a third-party firewall, I usually set up the allocation of LAN with an IP address range. E.g. would be 192.168.1.0 - 192.168.1.254. Obviously you would substitute your correct subnet. Do not run more than one firewall. DON'T STOP FIREWALLS; CONFIGURE THEM CORRECTLY.

(B) to facilitate the Organization, put all computers in the same workgroup. This is done from the System applet in Control Panel, the computer name tab.

C. create the counterpart of the user accounts and passwords on all machines. You do not need to be logged into the same account on all machines and assigned to each user account passwords can be different; accounts/passwords just need to exist and to match on all machines. DO NOT NEGLECT TO CREATE PASSWORDS, EVEN IF ONLY OF SIMPLE. If you want a machine to boot directly to the desktop (a particular user account) for convenience, you can do this. The instructions on this link work for XP and Vista:

Set up Windows to automatically connect (MVP Ramesh) - http://windowsxp.mvps.org/Autologon.htm

D. Si one or more of the computers is XP Pro or Media Center, turn off Simple file sharing (Folder Options > view tab).

E. create share as you wish. XP Home does not share the users directory or the Program Files, but you can share folders inside those directories. A better choice is to simply use the Shared Documents folder. See the first link above for more information on Vista sharing.

F. you have the job of file sharing (and tested by exchanging a file between machines), if you want to share a printer connected locally to one of your computers, share of this machine. Then go to the printer mftr Web site. and download the latest drivers for the correct system. Install them on the target machines. The printer must be collected during the installation procedure. If this isn't the case, install the drivers and then use the Add Printer Wizard. In some cases, printers must be installed as local printers, but it is outside this response.

  • Computer does not start with connected external HARD disk

Although my BIOS doesn't look like another hard drive, when I start my computer with the external hard drive, the main computer shuts down until I have disable externally. I want to have external to back up automatically but can not have both to play well.

    Help!

    Hello

The same thing happened on my laptop with a connected external printer.
I was not able to turn on the laptop until I unplugged the USB printer.

Well, I checked the BIOS which controls the start and put the HARD internal disk to the first position!
Try this. Maybe it helps. Otherwise you will need to disconnect the external USB HDD til the operating system has started

  • Wireless remote access disk attached to the router wi - fi via USB

I access the internet from Windows 7, you use a wi - fi FiOS router. It has a USB port on the router. I connected an external hard drive (already correctly formatted) to the USB port. QUESTION: How can I access the HDD (wireless) of Windows 7? Currently, Windows 7 does not indicate the presence of the external drive.

If you have the Actiontec MI424WR (Verizon FIOS router more common) the USB port is pretty useless.  Here is a quote from the Manual:

"The USB port provides up to 5 VDC for the devices connected (to recharge a mobile phone, for example). In the future, with an update of the firmware version, the USB host feature will be available as external storage devices and cameras. »

  • How to connect two external HARD drive satellite and the same printer?

    Hello

I have now two laptop Toshiba Equium.
What is the best way to connect them so that they can access the same external hard drive and the same printer?

    Thank you

    Hello

I guess the two laptops are in the same network; Home LAN or WLan. Right?
I this case I recommend you connect HARD drive and printer to one of the portable satellite.

Then you can share the HARD drive and the printer with other cell phones on the LAN.

You could add the network permission to others, and in this case the other participants of the network would be able to share the printer and HARD drive.

My USB ports do not seem to work properly.  I used to be able to plug in my external hard drive and mobile phone to transfer files, but now I can't.  In the DEVICE MANAGER of the laptop, nothing seems to be wrong, no red or yellow warning.  However, the USB ports DO not seem to power the devices, my cell phone goes into charge mode and my HDD Seagate you can feel it vibrate slightly.  There are two USB ports on the left side and one on the right, and all three can not detect devices.  Help, please.

HERE IS a GUIDEto solving the problems of USB such as described in the post.  See if any of these help.  As you have posted in the notebook section, when you do that a single step to cripple, also remove the battery after the computer shuts down, unplug charger, too.  Then hold the power button for at least 30 seconds before feeding back.

BTW: have you tried to delete all things under the rubric of the USB in the Device Manager, then reboot to allow Windows to reinstall the USB ports?

When I go to the management of computer disk/storage/management - is not there in XP but it is for Win7.

How to work various PC and diferent OS?

If you view the contents of the external drive, I think that the first folder contains a USB driver that you need to install to run properly, if you cannot view the contents of drive I'm sure you can download the driver for Western Digital. I think that the work of readers well on Windows 7 installs with 3 USB ports, but drivers are needed for USB 2.

Recently, I laid out my laptop due to a faulty internal hard drive. Windows has been reformatted and a new internal hard drive has been installed. Hello

to power on you will see a way to get into the program installation/bios or boot menu command at the bottom of the screen

It would be F2 or delete etc to get into the setup of the bios or F12 forBoot order

go into the Bios and see if the USB boot is enabled a see also if it 1st in the boot order

  • To access the branches connected to the main office using VPN L2L by RA VPN

    Hi all

I am trying to configure access to several remote sites for users that VPN in our main data center.  The data center has a 5520, and branches are connected via L2L IPSec VPN.  All branches have 5505 or 5510.  Remote users use IPSec via the remote Client to Cisco.  In our data center works and L2L VPN remote access are perfect... only now that I need remote users access to branches

after remote access VPNing (of support), I can't work the part.

    Any help would be appreciated!

    Thank you

Vpn client access management office subnet via the main ASA site, you must configure the following:

    (1) If you have split tunnel, it must include the branch subnet in the tunnel of split ACL.

    2) allow to "permit same-security-traffic intra-interface" on the main ASA site.

    (3) configure the pool of the vpn client subnet in the lan-to-lan tunnel to the branch.

On the main site, crypto ACL to one of the branch should say:

    ip licensing

On the site of the Directorate, crypto ACL to the main site should say:

    ip licensing

    (4) on the site of the Directorate, should also include NAT exemption between the branch subnet to the pool of the vpn subnet.

    (5) after all the changes above, you need to clear the tunnel, so the ipsec lan-to-lan tunnel recover with the new subnet included.

    Hope that helps.

  • HP wireless correctly connected but not printing

Have HP Officejet 6600 wireless configured correctly on MAc with snow leopard. Test page prints ok.

When printing from any application nothing orints but HP utility SIAS host network is busy, will try again in 10 sec Network is certainly not busy. Any ideas anyone how to solve?

It could be the router, but it seems that it might just be a port on the router that is blocking the printer from printing.

You can try to perform a hard reset on the router. Unplug it for 30 seconds and plug it in again. You can also disable your firewall and anti-virus when restarting the wireless connection.
