WRT54G v6 router cuts

WRT54G v6 router cancels suddenly several times a day, using a wired connection on both computers. No problem when not connected to the modem direct.  This router is a failure? How to fix?

Frank M.

Today following the advice of another source I've updated the Linksys Firmware for the router. Then I've reconfigured again the router security, etc.  So far, it works OK. We'll see what happens in the next 24 hours.

  • Add WRT54G: second router / access point, unable to get to the outside network.

    Here is the prob:

We just got cable internet the other day and the cable operator insisted on using their v1000 Belkin F5D7234-4 instead of my WRT54G V8. So I thought I'd use the WRT54G as a second router/AP (without wireless/LAN/WAN). I was eager to do this by running an ethernet in the WAN on the WRT54G port and plug it into the port of the client on the Belkin, place the wrt - 54 G at the other end of the House and have the WRT54G broadcasting the same SSID and require authentication even as the Belkin and use the Belkin to Linksys Wireless Bridge. In this way, it will extend my wireless network and all computers can access the internet and the other (wireline customers will keep at wire-speed, wireless is not authicate to two different networks.)

I can't get the Linksys network based able to see all the other computers outside the WRT - 54 G, even for wireless clients. On the side of things Belkin network, I can't ping the router even if she pulls a DHCP in the Belkin address. All customers the Belkin side can meet and thin internet. I've fiddled with the WRT54-g for almost an entire weekend now with no result. The WRT54G can see the other router as a DNS as well as external DNS providers, but none of the client computers can. Basically, I'm wanting to extend the network of Belkin 4 as most cable customers and fill a few dead wireless, and make the visible computer on the same network of suggestions?

    Parameters of WRT - 54G:

    Automatic configuration - DHCP

    Same domain name like Belkin
IP router set a tire to the DHCP server

    DHCPserver OFF

    Mode of operation: router

    Safe are disabled.

Wireless SSID is the same as Belkin

Wireless channel is the same as belkin.

Method and auth. key is the same as belkin.

    Belkin:

    DHCP is on.

    15 IP addresses available.

Wireless gateway is on with the WRT54G Wireless MAC address information.

    Ethernet cords are connected.

I played with static routes for hours, tried the option routing dynamic, even tried DMZing of the WRT54G intellectual property in the belkin and still unable to connect to the internet. Tried the Belkin MAC address cloning. Nothing seems to work. When I plug the WRT - 54G directly in my digital/Modem/phone cable box, I get internet and everything. I'm at the point of throwing same DD - WRT on it.

But beyond connection "wireless" I discovered really does not work if well (drops random wireless speeds seize up) with two different pieces of equipment running two different firmwares. So the thing connecting wireless set was out the window.

I however knew what I had to do Linksys firmware:

    1.) DHCP clients forward.

    Customers of Belkin - network

    Linksys customers - network B

The dhcp pool was not get transferred to the client computers. That is the 1-2 on network computer had XXX. XXX.100 - 102 for 3-4 computers on network B was YYY. YYY. YYY statically set by Windows. Even after changing to a static address on the network A dhcp scope I could still connect to the internet or to one of the computers on the network.

The static routing table seemed not lead me anywhere either, and I've tried dozens of configurations.

The way I got it Setup is with the customer enthernet of the Belkin ROUTER to THE Internet on the Linksys WRT54G port 1-4. Maybe I should have plugged the ethernet on the client side of 4 ports Linksys?

Anyway DD - WRT redirect DCHP feature was what I need.

Regarding the scenario wireless two routers have the same encryption method and key but different channels and ssid. Who, with DD - WRT for some reason when I jump on the wireless-B, Vista will be ID it as network A (B).

I hope that it has not violated anything except the guarantee which was anyway. The reason for which I needed for my network up this way is because I do a lot of work using VM (of various operating systems), is simply easier to have two separate semi networks. (to different physical locations in the House)

  • WRT54GS Wireless Router recently started disconnecting Internet connection after 9 months

Hello, I have read some and see that it is a problem common but of are to be decided.

    I have a Lynksys WRT54GS with the latest Firmware update v7.2 27 July 2009 (FW_WRT54GSv7.2_7.2.07.013_EN_20090727)

I ran 2 desktop computers as well as my DVR security by the security cameras for remote monitoring, also portable hook upward wireless sometimes as well without any problem using this router for over 9 months now with no problems until the last few days... I never log out and leave it on 24/7 for 9 months without problem and now recently I had to pull on the power cord from the back of the router and reconnect it to re power on the router to establish an internet connection.

Now the last 3 days the router loses its internet connection each monutes a few... hours... the time it disconnects are random moments and I have the programs I need to run all day but can't because the router loses its connections...

I applied the firmware again... re factory - configure the router... rebooted the computer... tried cloning the MAC address... all seem to be doing nothing... the same problem still exists.

All of the minutes or hours so it disconnects the interent.

I ran the office computer directly to the DSL Modem and I'm online very well with a desktop computer without disconnections for hours and hours (18hrs to date is not a problem), so I know this isn't the access provider. I had this problem I believe before with a previous Lynksys router and then bought it and now after this short period it seems to do the same thing again with this one. What a pain in the but.

    All solutions and more...

    Re application firmware... then

factory re set the router... then

re - connect computers as if it were a new router... the MAC address cloning? Geezus... it must be one simple solution other then buy another brand router.

    Thanks in advance...

What is the IP address, find the modem directly...? Connect the computer directly to the modem and check the ip address? What is the ip address, you get the router...?

Try the following settings on the router and check the connection...

-Change the channel to 11-2 wireless, 462 GHz

-Under the Advance wireless settings tab, change the tag at 50, Fragmentation threshold to 2304, interval RTS threshold to 2304

  • Why does my tp link router cut my internet connection every few seconds

Thanks for your answers 2 of I managed to reset my router to factory re instaled my settings now it seems ok

  • WRT54GS V5 - router to access the problem after reset

My router worked with the exception of not being able to add a new laptop to wireless access. I suspect that my original password may have been messed up in the last two years, I've used it. I decided that I had to reset to the factory settings and start over, adding MAC addresses and passwords reset.

After several attempts, I started to enter a password loop where she'd just off the coast of the verification of the settings and come back with a new password box. I have tried both direct access through 192.168.1.1 and using the V5.2 Setup disk.

After these failures, I checked your forums and elected to try a hard reset by:

    (1) power off router, Modem & computer.

    (2) disconnect all cables from the router.

    (3) power of router, enable 3 m restart

    (4) press on & hold reset for a minute, watching the power button flashes. Observed and released continues to Flash. After a few minutes, unplugged the power supply to the router.

    (5) PC cable reconnected to the #2 port. I hit the brakes the cable Modem as I suspected my computer trying to autostart AOL may have had a problem.

    (6) set the router under tension and allowed him several minutes to restart, then power & started the PC.

    (7) indexed in 192.168.1.1 and it entered my screen AOL (with AOL not connected, & no modem connection).

    (8) start of Linksys screen seemed to ask for password. I entered "admin", then after a break but I have once again the password screen. Reinstated 'admin' a few times more.

    (9) even and repeated steps 7 & 8 again with the same results.

    (10) using the CD Lynksys v 5.2 access attempt.  -with the same results: a password loop.

I concluded that I needed to update my firmware before trying again. I managed to download the file for the V5, but when I tried to run I had a matter of Windows 'OPEN WITH?'

I have absolutely no idea and was not able to find an answer in this forum, although I don't know that there is somewhere.  If I can't find it, though, there is not. It took me a few hours to find how to add a new topic in a post.

I hope that someone can suggest something. The router works fine with systems that were connected to the front.  I also noticed a reference to the evolution of one of the parameters to 192.168.2.1 (or something). I'll have to try to find this page.

This Site is very difficult to navigate. I also tried copy and paste comments to the WORD, in a format that is more practice/more dense with some difficulty because of the color of the text. The Site is pretty (and I'm an industrial Designer) but the function must always take priority.

    Thanks in advance,

    Norm

The reason why the admin does more work as router password because you have setup a router password, not knowing, in the first time install you your router... If you remember the router password when you used all first your installation CD to install your router then enter this password...

If you don't remember the password, then you need to reset the factory settings (I know that you have already reset the router) is...

Press and hold the button to reset for a minute... Release the reset button... Unplug the router power cable, wait 1 minute and re-connect the power cable...

Make sure that your computer is set to "Obtain IP address automatically", disable any firewall, the security software on the computer...

Adjust the browser settings - open an IE, click on tools > Internet Options, and then delete all files, cookies, history, forms... GoTo 'Connections', make sure that never Dial a connection is selected, click on network settings and make sure that all the options are unchecked... Once you are finished, click OK... Close IE and reopen...

Open an Internet Explorer browser on your computer (desktop) wired page. In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press ENTER... Let the empty user name & password use admin lowercase... See if it accepts...

If the above fails, connect another computer to the router and see if you can access the router web interface...

  • WRT54G - wireless connection limits?

Yes, I have a WRT54G V6 router, and I wonder how many wireless connections it supports?  Because, I have a wired connection, and whenever I try to connect more than 4 wireless devices, a device will be get launched.

So is there a way to open more wireless connections or suggestions?

    Thank you.

On the computers of all Vista and Win 7 disable IPv6 in LAN properties for both wireless and Wired Adapters.  Disable UPnP in router.  Restart the computer and try again to connect.

  • Replace BEFW11S4, WRT54G

Where can I find instructions for replacing an existing one with a new WRT54G LinkSys Router?  EasyLink is not cooperating.

I need to replace my old BEFW11S4 with my new WRT54G, but EasyLink does not detect S 11, 4 - he advises just insert me the 54G between my PC and the cable Modem.  I first tried to replace S 11, 4 by the 54G, but EasyLink then reports an interruption of the Internet [duh].  I then tried to insert the 54G on each side of the of the 11S 4 [assuming that I could possibly figure out how to tear the S 11, 4], but EasyLink does not detect the 54G on each side of the S 11, 4.

The manual is located on the installation CD and the Web of Linksys site.  Search and you will find...

  • WRT54G

I have mixed my transformers and want to know the correct voltage for my WRT54G.

Power of the wrt54g v2 router specifications:

    -12V 1A

  • WRT54GS jumpered to WAP54G - can be done "wireless".

I can find no confirmation that ALL Linksys products allow the fillers 'Wireless' a wireless router with a wireless access Point. The only solution I've seen involves 'wiring' a router to a WAP browser and then "wireless" bypass than another WAP WAP.

I want a connection 'Wireless' between a router and a WAP browser. It's not that hard to is it?

Currently I have my modem cable connected to my router WRT110 range wireless more (I could replace a WRT54GS the WRT110 if needed). What is installed on the floor and all my electronics IP based on the floor to connect to this router with cables. I have several computers downstairs who need access to the Internet as well as to communicate with the hardware on the floor. One of the computers is down already connected 'Wireless' to the WRT110. However, I extend my office on the ground floor and I want to group these computers together on a switch that is then connected to the WAP54G. The WAP54G cannot (without too much pain) be connected by cable to the WRT110 due to the design of my house.

You would think that this scenario would not only common, but also simple to do.

Anyone out there with a solution to this (other than to do everything down to communicate wirelessly)?

    Thanks amine.

At least you tried to answer my question and give me a solution as possible. Fred, OTOH, is an arrogant geek and no help at all.

I ended up solving the problem on my own. I used my existing WRT54GS wireless router and my WAP54G access point that is configured as a bridge.

For those looking for the same solution as I type, I posted the details of how I arrived later in this post. ***

It took a lot of trial and error. Mainly due to the fact that Linksys/Cisco online documentation and the documentation of 'aid' within the Web interface for the devices is erroneous and confusing (at least to anyone who does not work for Cisco).

For example, any person (other than a network experienced pro) read the manual of the product, the web help screen interface on the device itself or the product description on the Web site for the WAP54G will be left asking exactly how to actually connect this device.

I resorted to the use of Linksys ask which took a lot of research/reading just to get closer to the info that I needed. In fact, a description indicates that the WAP54G may ONLY be connected to the WRT54GS as either an Access Point (AP) or as a wireless Repeater (which would solve my problem). It does not you can connect to the WRT54GS in Bridge Mode or AP Client Mode. So, it's very misleading at first.

In addition, when bring you up the web interface on the WAP54G and click on-screen in AP Mode, the note at the 'bottom' of the screen says that you can only connect to an another WAP54G in AP Client or in Bridge Mode. It excludes the WRT54GS device.

However, if you click the HELP link on this page AP Mode, that the documentation says that you CAN Bridge to a WRT54GS device.

So you can see how difficult it was getting just enough information to determine that it would be possible to fill the two devices together and solve my problem. That's why I have a bone to pick with Linksys and, apparently, no-Help Freddie.

Here's the scenario and solution for those of you following this post who want to do what I did:

    SCENARIO:

Connect the network segment 'A' to 'B' network segment using a wireless connection (essentially means that you need a wireless bridge).

Network segment 'A' consists of the cable Modem connected to a Linksys WRT54GS wireless router. This router provides switching and Internet connectivity for all connected it devices whether they are with or without wire connections. In my case, I have a NAS device and a laptop connected via a CAT5 cable, and I have a TIVO box connected via the wireless connection.

Network segment 'B' consists of a group of computers in the lower corner of my house. It is not easily possible to run a CAT5 cable out there so a wireless connection is necessary. In addition, devices to connect have no wireless cards and I don't want to spend the money to add. My approach was to wire all of these devices to a switch and then connect this switch for the WAP54G. The WAP54G then it must connect to the WRT54GS connect wireless 'haul back' (since I couldn't do cable together using CAT5.

    SOLUTION:

Start first with the WRT54GS device:

    (1) follow the procedure of Linksys to connect your PC to the WRT54GS router so that you can access to the routers configuration utility web interface.

    (2) using the web to access the WRT54GS interface, configure the WRT54GS with the INTERNET side of the router to auto configure itself (DHCP) in the Modem/Internet cable box.

    (3) on the side of the router LAN, configure it to 192.168.1.1 IP address and set it as the DHCP server for the local network. Assign the address of 192.168.1.100 rental range 149.

    (4) you should now have Internet access.

    (5) download and install the latest version of the firmware from the site Web of Linksys (version 4.71.4 in this case).

    6) write down the "wireless MAC address" of the WRT54GS. This information is shown on the STATUS and then the screens tabs wireless web interface. You will need when you configure the WAP54G.

    5) click on the WIRELESS tab and set the SSID to something that will be common to all your connected wireless network devices. I set mine to MIXED mode and use the CHANNEL 6. I also enabled SSID broadcast (at least initially).

    6) click the fixed wireless SECURITY tab MODE for WPA-PERSONAL and serve the TKIP algorithm. Enter a character from 8 to 63 KEYS in the field. The docs say nothing about the case of the letters (LC or UC) but I found that it is important. Also, I tried to use WPA-PERSONAL2 and AES, but it wouldn't work. So use the one I mentioned to start.

    (7) to change the password for the router in 'admin' (which is the default) to something else.

    (8) save all of these changes.

    (9) the backup configuration of the WRT54GS on hard drive of the local computer.

    Now, configure the WAP54G device:

    (1) connect a CAT5 cable between the WRT54GS LAN port to the Ethernet on the WAP54G port.

    (2) use the PC connected to the WRT54GS make the configuration of the WAP54G.

    (3) connect to the WAP54G using IP 192.168.1.245, which is the default address assigned to the plant.

    (4) on the SETUP / NETWORK SETUP screen, change the IP address to 192.168.1.2 STATIC address (in any case, it must be different from the IP address on the WRT54G or there is a conflict).

    (5) download and install the latest version of the firmware from the site Web of Linksys (version 3.04 in this case).

    6) click on SETUP, then AP MODE tab change the AP to WIRELESS BRIDGE MODE and enter the "wireless MAC address" of the WRT54GS that you noted in step 6 above in one of the fields in the section of BRIDGE wireless of this screen.

    7) click on the WIRELESS tab and configure the BASIC WIRELESS settings to the same as those used for the WRT54GS (named Mode, SSID and channel).

    8) click the wireless SECURITY tab and configure the WPA-PERSONAL, TKIP and password to be the same ones you used on the WRT54GS device.

    (9) change the default password of "admin" on the WAP54G and the BACKUP configuration.

    (10) now both devices can connect wirelessly.

    (11) disconnect the WAP54GS CAT5 cable. The WAP54G and the WRT54GS should now be able to communicate "wireless".

    (12) connect a switch on the Ethernet on the WAP54G port.

    (13) connect your PC, etc. to the switch. Wireless devices will also be able to connect to the device either WAP54G or the WRT54GS device that gives the signal stronger.

    (14) a set of the PC, network etc configurations use DHCP to obtain their IP, subnet, gateway and DNS automatically (mainly the WRT54GS).

    (15) you should now be able to connect from a PC on the side WAP54G of PC and Internet network via the WRT54GS device. The WAP54G will be connected to the WRT54GS 'Wireless '.

    Ciao
