XP recognizes my drive to 500 GB like a 128 GB drive

I had to rebuild my OS XP MCE. I have a promise Ultra133 TX2, which has a Seagate 500 GB drive attached. After the loading of the operating system, XP has seen the car and says that is not formatted. I have not used the backup drive so no problem of data loss. When I start the PC the promise card starts and search the disks attached. He sees the 500 GB drive and report it as such. The drivers for the card are loaded. In Device Manager, the map shows it's OK. In the disk management screen, 500 GB drive shows with a single partition of only 128 GB. I tried to delete the partition and re-create it. The max that it will allow me to create is 128GB. There is no unallocated space, just the partition of 128GB. I formatted the disk to see if that would change anything, it does not.

Nothing I try seems to make the drive to its original size.

When MCS has been loaded it also loaded operating system XP Professional in another partition, this which I can boot instead of the MCS. It also shows the drive as 128 GB.

Is there something in XP that can be changed so that it will recognize the 500 GB disc?

Or is reported to XP the size of the disc currently in the drive its self?

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you

I see here:

http://firstweb.promise.com/support/download/download2_eng.asp?ProductID=87&category=all&OS=100

that the drivers for XP are of 2003, I think he's too old for could recognize if new drive 500 GB, but it could cause a motherboard.

Watch the forder:

C:\Windows\System32\Drivers

try to find the "ultra.sys' - how old is this file? (right click on the file - Properties)

How old is your PC ? It's a computer brand ? Can you write here the manufacturer and model name ? (It might cause a motherboard)

  • CD/DVD does not recognize the drive.

CD/DVD does not recognize the drive.  Error message-"Insert a disk." "" "Insert a disk in the drive (E or F, depending on whether one in use).  I bought a DVD/CD thought exteranl today that might work.  Same error message with the external dvd/cd.  Can hear the disc turning when it is inserted during a short period of time, maybe 20 seconds, then it stops.  Sometimes, the disc is ejected when the error message appears, sometimes not.  Same results even with blank CDs.

    Hello

Step 1: Please do all the same underneath if you did some before as is often total
a process that solves the problem.

Try this - Panel - Device Manager - CD/DVD - double click on the device - driver tab.
Click on update drivers (this will probably do nothing) - RIGHT click ON the drive - uninstall.
RESTART this will refresh the default driver stack. Even if the reader does not appear to continue
    below.

Then, work your way through these - don't forget the drive might be bad, could be a coward

I have 2 laptops, the two Vista running. Both have WMP 11. We recognize USB drives in WMP11 and allows playlist to copy to them. The other laptop recognize USB drives (I have a variety of brands and sizes) in Win Explorer, will play the music of their share in WMP11 but will not recognize USB keys for use with copy of the lists of reading or synchronization. Sync, refresh devices does not help. Same result if USB is directly connect to the laptop or connected via USB multi hub. USB key works perfectly in all other respects, but WMP11 is unable to locate one of them.

    Hi MarcGG,

  • Windows XP does not recognize Portable Toshiba external 500 GB hard drive.

I bought a Toshiba Portable external 500 GB hard and connected to my Windows XP. My windows XP will recognize any unit. I went into my computer > management > drivers to find the drive and rename it. He wasn't there. I have Windows XP SP2, and I said that Windows XP SP3 is not compatible with this device.  I went to control panel > adding hardware > allow Research Assistant for devices not installed and it still did not.

    Any suggestions?

In the future, please start your own thread.  It does not appear that your problem has much in common with that of the previous, other than you poster, both have a problem with an external drive.

Open disk management (start > run > diskmgmt.msc > OK)
Your portable player should be shown here (probably as "disk 1" in the lower pane)

If the disk space presents itself as "Not allocated" (as in the figure above), right-click and select "New Partition".  During the operation of the wizard, you assign a drive letter.  I suggest that your format using NTFS.  Once the disk has been partitioned, formatted, and has a drive letter, it should show in my computer.

If the drive is already partitioned and formatted, see if you can assign a drive letter to right-clicked on.
