  I used a linux Live CD Knoppix 3.7 distribution. After you download and burn the iso of the distribution (http://www.knoppix.net) restart the laptop and set the startup order CD-ROM, HARD drive, etc. Restart and at the first screem press F2, then type memtest (instructions are on the screen...)

  To check what type of memory you need you can use the assistants of http://www.crucial.com or http://www.offtek.co.uk

  I am not an expert, but I think that the blue screen could come from some bad drivers as well...   It seems that if your installation is default 'auto restart in case of error. The effect is to force the system to restart in case of system error.
