3.46Ghz mac Pro 12-Core (hot rodded) should I buy?

Hello

There seems to be a lot of Mac 12-core for sale... at reasonable prices.

I'm looking for advice on/to their topic.

(1) are they all models 2009 and later?

(2) are motherboards bottlenecked?

(3) is there a difference between a world

adopted 2009 and adopted a 2012.

Thank you

Michael North

-They must be either 2010 or later or a 2009 firmware has been updated on 2010 since 2009 can only use 4-core processors.

-There is little bit of difference/no significant differences between a 2009 with updated firmware and the Pros 2010 - 2012 Mac

-The bottleneck is usually disk read/write from the bus SATA is only SATA II (3 GB/s). Installation of a 2 1/2 SSD increase I/O.

Plu fast I/O, you can install a blade PCLE based SSDS

The SSD to 'Classic' Mac Pro training

-Many applications can use the graphics processor for the calculations, so a better graphics card can increase the flow. But it depends on the applications used.

    Hello old friends!

Common sense, to the age of my current BOOT DRIVE (320GB) and the recent difficulties of start-up tell me I should replace the DISK to BOOT in my Mac Pro 4 - core (mid-2006) 2.66 GHz ASAP - in fact, immediately

I do NOT need more capacity.  Currently I have a 320 with 225 available GB boot drive.  However, I do understand that there may be nothing in this range of low capacity available out there more.  I was buy new disks for the other three bays, and they are 1 and 2 TB of disk.

Should I buy a big for my boot drive?  Should I consider a SSD?  I want to less than $100 or more.

I recently installed Mountain Lion on a newly formatted on my Mac Pro Quad Core Intel Xeon desktop drive, installed all updates to 10.8.5 and now when I try to record on the 1 TB drive, says the disk is locked. When I try to copy files to the boot disk, I authenticate first. The other 2 HD copy and record properly. What is happening that I can't save or copy on the new drive? My applications act as they are also used for the first time. I did a "Get Info" to verify permissions and changed to read & write for all accounts.

Reset user - file property See post by Linc Davis

You may need to restore the permissions on your user account. To do this, start on your recovery partition (hold down the command and R during startup) and open Terminal from the Utilities menu. In the Terminal, type: 'resetpassword' (without the), press return, and then select the admin user. You do not have to reset your password. Click the icon of your Mac hard drive at the top. In the list box below, select the user account that has problems. At the bottom of the window, you will see a box labeled restore Home Directory permissions and ACLs. Click the button to reset there. The process takes a few minutes. When you're finished, restart.

  • Mac Pro 2013 become hot, not answer and stop.

    Hello

I have a 2013 Pro Mac, I bought as used before 5 months and he was well, before 3 days, the weather was warm (approx. 28 °) and under normal conditions, use my Mac Pro start freezing and not answered every 15-30 Minutes and automatically stop or I have to disconnect the power cable.

I started looking on the problem, I checked the bodies of the Mac Pro and I found it very hot, the fan worked but slow, I searched on Google on a tool or a command I can do the fan faster and I found an application called SMC FanControl, this app showing me that Mac temperature of 48 ° also with this app, I was able to turn the fan to Max speed, I heard the noise of the fan, it worked perfectly with this app. The Mac Pro early to work perfectly also with in normal and hard jobs.

Yesterday, I decided to clean all of my Mac Pro material, maybe that this solves the problem, it was dirty, and I did as new as you can see in this picture:

I also used for better CPU and GPU thermal compound I found on the market.

BUT the problem came with the first video editing, 48 ° c, closing down and not be able to turn it on for 5 Minutes.

The question is: why my Mac Pro not control the fan automatically? is it a software or a hardware problem? If the material someone we know exactly?

    Best regards

    Which component was 48 c?

    What was the hottest component?

    It's not hot at all.

From now on my MP 2013 with base CPU, CPU ITPP and CPU sensors 1-4 are about 100 ° C and speed of 84CFan two GPU time 1750

  • Very high readings of temperature CPU of the Mac Pro 8-core 2007

I have a Mac Pro 1.1 updated to level with two Intel Xeon X 5365 CPU and firmware 2.1. The system has worked very well for months. However, I'm worried about CPU temperature readings. Assuming that the readings are correct, I have no explanation for the difference in typical 30 degree Celsius between the processor and the heat sink.

Is it possible, that the CPU exceeds their life expectancy?

During a stress test, I can see the following typical readings:

    CPU core 87 C / 189 F

    CPU a heatsink 58 C / 136 F

    B processor 91 c/196 F

    CPU radiator B C 59/138 F

I use new thermal paste Arctic MX-2 and tried various measures, including polishing of the surface of the CPU and the heatsink using sandpaper grain 1000. Nothing has so far had no effect on temperature readings. There should be enough good contact between the heatsink and processor during the installation, because they stick well enough to remove the heatsink again.

Max TCASE. According to the operating temperature -1333 http://ark.intel.com/products/30702/Intel-Xeon-Processor-X5365-8M-Cache-3_00-GHz-MHz-FSB is 63 degrees Celsius.

According to http://www.intel.com/content/dam/doc/design-guide/5400-chipset-memory-controller-moyeu-guidelines.pdf the Quad-Core Intel® Xeon® 5300 series include a function of on-chip temperature sensor. The heat sink provided by Apple has a temperature sensor, which seems to be fixed directly on the coper plate that touches the CPU head spreader.

Given the following quote from the same document:

TIM's performance is sensitive to degradation (e.g. breakdown of fat) over the life of the processor because of the temperature of the phenomena of cycling. For this reason, measuring of the processor given TCASE value can decrease over time according to the type of material of TIM.

Anyone know if the IHS on the CPU is soldered or whether they used the thermal paste between the IHS and the die of a CPU? In the case, perhaps it could explain the current temperature readings.

    Any ideas? Thank you!

Your temperatures look a bit high, but not outrageous. The temperature measured on the Silicon of heat will be always higher than the temperature measured on the radiator. That's what the radiator is supposed to do, leads away from the heat to the fins, which would measure even more cool.

Your Mac allows to adjust speed of the fans to the top in a loop of feedback, founded the temperature of these measures. You can place a floor under your minimum speeds of fans. This can be done with the tool similar to some tool you already use, like the SMC fan control.

If the processors to exceed their safe operation temperature, your Mac will perform a sudden uncontrolled power off.

  • Apple Mac Pro "Quad Core" 2.8 (2008) - worth the effort?

Could someone suggest a cheap videocard, I could use just to see if it works?

It is better to play with?

    Thanks for your suggestions?

'Later' a few days ago is 10.12 Sierra and that Mac is not supported under Sierra.

10.11 El Capitan is always available for download (but deliberately difficult to download 'accidentally'). Any downloadable Mac OS requires you to have 10.6.8 in place first, because this is the version with a stable Mac App Store.

In an emergency, ask the dealer if they have a "Full Retail" 10.6.8 Snow Leopard DVD they could give you, or buy it for $ 20 on the Apple store online. Gray discs only work for the exact model, they are made for, so a gray disk for an iMac will not start and will not be installed.

"What graphics card" is motivated by what you plan to do with it. Mac-specific firmware a graphics card is necessary for a photo before the login screen. GT120 Mac firmware card is very affordable, but it's not bad a card if you plan on editing video and other.

To run El Capitan, there must be a minimum of 4 GB of RAM, and more is better. Your Mac uses DIMM modules in pairs in adjacent locations, and if you fill out accidentally all the slots, memory in double width for an increase in the speed of 17 percent.

  • 2009 mac Pro 8 core graphics upgrade advice

Hi everyone, my Mac Pro crashed recently and wiped out the SSD drive and 8800gt graphic card in the process. I have since replaced the SSD but you want to replace the graphics card also. Can anyone recommend some links to maps of upgrade appropriate that work with this machine you?

Take a look at macvidcards, they have a wide variety of graphics cards from amd and nvidia, from low cost to high power.

In general, every current video card should work in your mac, but the 'pure windows versions' do not show an image until osx is fully charged and drivers are loaded.

Versions of macvidcard are flashed so can show splash screens. Not normally necessary, but when that mind in the process of starting or when you need bootcamp boot selection screen, you will see the value of the additional monetary you spent for the funniest versions.

I got my 980ti to them.

  • new mac pro 6 core 64 GB of RAM: reading late 4K files timeline and source monitor

Here is my speed.  not that I understand all the details of this test, but it seems relatively quickly.

I experience lag during playback of 4 K, the monitor source or online images of scene.  in other words, when I hit play it takes half a second to one second to read.  Once he plays, he has no problem.

deselection of video keyframes, remove all unused audio tracks (3 cam project) does not help.  Once a clip plays back (and it reads without problems as I said), when you can come back at the beginning of the clip (up arrow), he rereads - i.e. begins once again - no lag.  in the scenario, let's say you chop a 20 minute interview (ok, in detail: each element seems to be 05:51 long and about 5 GB, h264 - must be an automatic feature on the camera in terms of storage - in other words, no large files of 20 GB or whatever it is)-so when you this chop into smaller pieces, when you then go further down the same hashed clip It is delayed once again.  even if it is the same file on the computer.  then return to the where it did not delay initially, this part now shifts again.

When I put the 1080 p prores files in the project, fast lighting everything.  (I'm talking to navigate and manipulate items in the editing or even source monitor Panel.  I'm not talking rendering and output.  "I think it works very well.)  I'm at the limit of whats possible with my machine and the sequences of 4K with PP?  This is the format?  intuition and several years of experience tell me whatever it is 422 still works perfectly but nothing h264 will always be even the fastest machine to work so hard.  right?  evil?

    PP CC was last updated

    El capitan (guilty?)

today work with 5400 1 speed 4 thunderbolt to drive rocketstor toaster.  not insanely fast, but as I said, once I got the game on a clip I already hit play previously, it works without lag.  So how is it possible?  What is this feature that makes this place?  There seems to be things loading in the bg who then are responsible - and when you place this specific element to the following, even if both refer to the same file, you have this lag again.  between the second half and second complete.  I exported a file of 5K h264 in a different project and the computer, finder, quicktime etc has no questions immediately play it back.  What gives?

any ideas?  I thought that a machine of $5K don't experience any lag really.  No I don't want to throw money to solve the problem, but you know what I mean.

    Thank you!

    Michael

PS: I just checked one of my files to QuickTime.  Yes, here also a half second delay on the play button.  not powerful enough system for reading 4K flawless?  are my criteria for impeccable speed on computer too high?

Throw 4 k on a timeline dramatically ups the flow required for EVERYTHING on the computer. Understand, that for 'typical' UHD (1920 x 1080) as I work with, my pc is a 4-core i7 (8 "virtual"... Yes, whatever) 3.5 Ghz (2 cores overclocked as which proved faster in operation), 32 GB of RAM (RAM frequency has been changed too), GTX970 / 4 GB vRAM for graphics.

I have a decent drive in this machine... Setup but put most of the things PrPro on a WIDE, material faster striped RAID-0 would work as well or better.

    -: Twin 250GB SSD in RAID 0 for speed system, used for the OS & programs ONLY;

    -250GB SSD for the system cache and cache/database files also PrPro;

-Disk internal 500 GB at 10 000 rpm, previews; (kept fairly clean, less than a third full)

    -Disk internal 3 TB, project files;

-Internal drive 2 TB, media files; (maintained below 50%)

    -Internal drive 2 TB, exports.

This extends to the work of in/out/cache disk so it is not slow things down, and so the CPU can be better used. I do stuff test & family here, keep the media on a PNY 128 GB flash, read-only drive so the USB3 who is fast enough.

Other things, such as documents & upload files, storage general file, is on other players. This keeps all the foregoing, including the system drive, pretty skinny and good working condition.

The newest Samsung T1/T3 external SSD drives have been tested for incredibly fast work flow, much more than other readers USB3.

And of course, the internal drives m.2 must amazing flow.

It is a system of 'balanced', having enough of every bit of available material nothing stacks up this CPU.

Then... you can watch your disk configuration. You may need a higher throughput...

  • A Mac Pro 2008 work well with El Capitan?

I found a xeon 2008 8 - core 2.8 GHz refurbished Mac Pro with 32 GB of ram and el capitan as, sold for 600 euros, my question is, if I buy it and put an SSD of 500 GB in it, how would that work? I could use it with a full hd screen? wouldn't be better than the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro 13 inch retina?

With the stock graphics card, 2008 would be poor in app related to graphic design as a recent MacBook Pro.  Difference in litter with a Mac Air.

The 2008 with original graphics card will support 2560 x 1600

Problem with the 2008 (and 2009), is that which concerns the mac Pro line, only the 2010 and later Sierra will run.

Also in 2006-2008 Mac Pro memory run hot and frequently fail with age.  The original of the graphics card, ATI 2600 XT also do either with time.

  • Help with Ram & graphics (old mac pro)

    Hello!

I am in need of help on my "old" gen mac pro 8-core xeon 5500 3rd (early 2009).

I just upgraded it to El Captain 10.11.6 and everything is working quite well.

I want to upgrade the RAM 16 GB and change the video card to something more recent with at least 1 GB of ram on it.

This mac was sitting in a corner for a while due to a recent move to London and I chose to give it a try and continue to use it.
At the moment, I have the following configuration:

I went to the apple store in Covent Garden, here in London and they told me to check the site of Crucial that ram that I buy using their tool to find the exact model, I need.

Well... I did... and the Web page does not suggest me any RAM, only SSDS.

I tried the same tool on other Mac I (iMac and macbook pro) and it worked.

So, my fear is that they (crucial) have no RAM in stock for my specific model.

Do you know what version should I buy and where? (amazon?)

The same is for the video card, I want to upgrade to another card with at least 1 GB of ram on it.

The mac will be used mainly as Adobe Creative station for Photoshop / Lightroom / InDesign.

Thank you in advance and I really hope you can help me. (even the guy from the apple store told me to ask here...)

Since it seems that you have a working graphics card you can buy a PC graphics card since those who are less expensive than a Mac of the card. The problem with PC cards is the show they just something on the screen after loading drivers that is right in front of the login screen. • Rental short term for the Mac Pro Tower - transplant ramdisk hard

    Hello

I am a composer based in the United Kingdom and use round of mid-2010 Mac Pro 8 Core (2 x 2.4 GHz) Intel Xeon with 64 GB RAM and four SSD drives.

I am going to Los Angeles for a project of long months of work in July and need a same computer set up to use while I'm there.  It's too expensive/complicated to ship my computer to the United States, then I'll probably rent a machine in Los Angeles.

I found in a place that I can rent a tower 2012 Mac Pro 12-Core (2.4 GHz) with 16 GB of RAM, and I wondered: if I take my four SSD drives and my RAM modules, then I simply transplant these pieces into the 12 basic machine and start as my home machine?  Or must I buy an additional empty SSD and use the Migration Wizard to clone my main boot drive?

I've never done this before, so I don't know if the boot drive will recognize that it is connected to a computer with a different motherboard etc.

Thanks for any help and advice,

    Laurent

Change the RAM and the disc should be fine. I would take the sleds with your SSD and just slid the old sleigh and do drag in your.

  • 8 GB DIMM modules for early 2008 Mac Pro

I see that OWC is now selling the 8 GB DIMMs for early 2008 Mac Pro (8-core, 3.2 GHz). This leads to the potential total RAM up to 64 GB.

Anyone has any experience of the use of these, or potential problems?

    Thank you!

I would call OWC and ask them. I remember not only here posts on this topic.

However. I myself would buy a chance 2009-2012 in the place and level it. These Mac Pro are the most capable and reliable and 8 GB sticks are 1/3 of the cost of those of 2008.
