6100 ink

In my 6100 color ink cartridges are destructive even if I'm not printing in color, at least not enough to exhaust the cartridges so quickly. How cartridges can empty when they are not used?

Hello dcblawdog,

Welcome to the HP Forums.

I see that the printer uses ink of color even when you're not printing in color.

The way most inkjet printers work is that even if you cannot print a color document or a picture, you will always use color ink.  The color ink is usually scheduled as a base so that the ink will not bleed through to this page or if the black ink is about to run out, colors will be mixed to make black ink.

The reason why this happens is so that a cartridge is not sitting empty causing the print heads or nozzles to dry out.

I hope this helps the issue at hand.

See you soon,.

  • OfficeJet 6100: Black ink printing

I have a yellow cartridge empty but want to print in black ink only 90% satisfied with my printing needs.

The manual here says 32-33 pages that the printer will print black if there is enough color ink in the print head, but once the ink has run out completely the cartrdige will need to be replaced.

HP and other printer manufacturers have technology another printer for different needs.  For ink jet printers:

      • Some have integrated into the ink cartridges print heads.  These printers can print generally with one or more of the colors completely empty, or even with color or black cartridges (but not both) removed. Deskjet 6980 series is an example, or for an all-in-one, check the Deskjet 2540.
      • Other printers have separate replaceable printheads and inks.  An example would be the printer Officejet 6100.  In these printers print head can be replaced if they are damaged by running the printhead with colors off.  Some of these printers allow printing with a color, the other will not.  If the printer is run without ink in one or several colours, the printer may be damaged, but the user may be able to recover without having to send to the printer for the service.
      • Other printers have permanent print heads.  To run only those without little ink in all colours would risk causing damage to the print head because of clogs, air ingested in the printhead or grilled printhead resistances of shooting. The Officejet 6700 is an example of this type of printer. For printers with fixed print heads that could require the service to get the printer to print properly again when the ink is finally replaced.

The document described here how the ink is used.  While the document is written for inkjet printers HP the same principles apply to the other manufacturers.print but especially black color inkjet printers printer IPH as those in the first category above can be a good choice.

  • Printer HP Officejet 6100; Win 7; Access the ink cartridges

Printer HP Officejet 6100; Win 7;  If the ink cartridge access door is opened with the printer, the cartridge printheads do not change access.  No error reported.

    Well, couple of questions:

First, they move with the door closed while printing, I want to say it actually prints, which would indicate that the transport is not stuck on the side? If it does not move, it may be blocked behind the paper or something inside the printer. It is not recommended to reach into the printer.

Second, is there an indication (light/message) which shows the door is actually open? Otherwise, there is a tab inside the right side of the door near the label to ink cartridge number? It is located on the edge of the door, and goes into the printer indicating open or closed to the printer.

If all this seems correct, try a hard reset on the printer. Powered on, unplug the power cord of the printer, wait at least 30 seconds, then plug the power supply cord. Turn on the printer and see if it will allow access to the cartridges.

  • Office Jet 6100: PRINTING OFFICE JET 6100

For the 6100 print settings are enough sparc but sufficient for my needs. I have a problem with the Advanced setting. I tried to put by default only using black ink. It doesn't seem to work. The only way I know is that when I print, I get a message of low ink magenta, with the option to print in black ink only. As far as I know, it does not matter if I set this as the default, or if I try to print jobs, she still wants to use the color ink. I tried new software but could not find. I've updated the firmware to the version of April 2016 and still can not get the printer to use only black ink.

I'd appreciate any help I could get with that.

    Thanks in advance.

    Hey @micneamol,

Welcome to the Forums of HP Support!

I see you are trying to print in black only from your Officejet 6100 printer. As the color printing is a defense mechanism to avoid damaging the printer, it is not possible to replace the printer to use only black ink.

You can learn more about printing in black only, as well as find a way to minimize consumption of color by clicking on this link.

  • Ink stop

Earlier, my printer said I was weak in blue ink. After a long delay with the process of ordering here at work, I received the color ink pack and installed. Then, the printer said I was low on black ink. After yet more time to work, I received the black ink and installed. Now, all of the ink is new. I have the HP Officejet 6100. Nothing happens. I have it turned off and back on. I disconnected and reconnected. I have re downloaded the driver. What else can I try?

  • HP Officejet 6100 e printer will not stop running

I have a printer portable officejet 6100 e.  This isn't an all in one printer.  It worked fine for a few months.  Now, it continues to operate.

In other words, the ink cartridges continue cycling back and forth.  I am unable to print anything, because the cradle never stops runniing.  I have to unplug or the system will work forever.  I let it run for 1/2 hour to see if it would stop.  But he never did.

I probably expiration on 15 or 20 pages and had to buy a new HP ink cartridges, so I do not throw away and waste with a value of 50 dollars or cartridges.

I'm sorry you have a problem with the printer.

See if you can unplug the USB cable from the back.

Press and hold (X) and unplug the power cord at the back. Plug the power cord supply, while holding down the (X) button.

Let me know if it stops.

  • OfficeJet 6100 Wireless: default print to hp officejet 6100

I have an officejet 6100 on a WiFi network with a computer using Windows 7 and the other stuck with Windows 8.1.  On the Windows 7 machine, I can set the default value of printing from the choice of the printer control panel.   It is Only/Draft of black ink, and the settings are retained.  The other machine is Windows 8.  When we the printer (Control Panel) on the setting of the aboves, they returned to a stop settings / Normal grayscale.  This means that everything is printed in color and not the project unless we do not forget to change the settings before printing. How can I get the settings Windows 8.1 by default Black Ink Only/Draft machine?

On the Windows 8 machine follow these steps: in Control Panel click devices and printers.  Right-click on the Officejet 6100 series and select Printing Preferences.  Click the paper/quality tab, select quick print of project quality, apply.  Then click on the tab color and check printing in grayscale and check the Black Cartridge Print selection only, apply.  Now you can also make a new print task Quick Set, type something like project - black only, Save, OK.

At this point, the default should be project with black only.  Note that some programs may keep their default values.

Every night (a1) and (a2) Aurora built updated every day, so if you use such a developer version you will see an update every day (sometimes more than once a day in the case of a respin). These alpha versions are more intended to be experienced testers, because you may experience stability and regression of the questions at any time. The beta version (currently Firefox 25) can be useful for testing Web sites to see if they're going to get broken in the next Firefox release and file a bug report, if necessary.

Note that you must always install such version of development alongside a stable version and use a separate profile for each version folder.
