  When the machine running Windows Update on a Windows XP Professional (SP3 with IE8), the information for the download of the ActiveX bar does not appear.   Long history, technical, short version: do not uninstall IE8 (and/or IE7) before doing a repair installation (Windows XP only!) leaves the two Internet Explorer and Windows in a State of "confused" or "broken". Your only recourse now is a clean install of Windows (after backup your personal data).

  No, another repair facility won't solve the problem - even if you uninstall IE8 beforehand.

  Do you have any 3rd party plugin installed for Adobe Reader? If not, close all instances of Adobe Reader running and delete the entire folder to: C:\program Adobe [version] \Reader\plug_ins.

  Now go to control panel > programs and features. Locate the entry for Adobe Reader X and choose to repair the installation.

  If you do not have a 3rd party plugin installed, try to uninstall them and see if the problem is related to the same. If it works, let me know what plugins have been the origin of the problem so that I can have a look.

  If all goes well, this should fix things.

  Without opening the program, in the list of applications, move on to Adobe Reader and right click, select Properties.
