ASM on HA SAN FC switches and replication

Hello

We need to install our first CARS, and we do not know how to manage the shared storage with high availability requirement.

For example, we have a SAN HA with two FC - switches and a master - / slave storage configuration - is ASM able to handle this?
ASM can handle physically separate physical disks (for example two boxes of discs in different rooms) and mirror and intertwining above?
The drives are of different types: e.g. a disk array and drives normal and grouped?
Any help is appreciated.

Kind regards
Monika Anna

Yes... ASM can manage Luns Avaliable in host.

Yes... ASM can do

It is not recommended that you have different (size and perfomance) disks on diskgroup even, you can have the serious performance problem.

    What the best best Senario for the installation of virtual machines on Big LUN or each VM on LUNS dedicated:

    We planninig to implement 70 virtual machines on Esx 3.5 servers with replication LUN usisng CA of HP 7.

    using 4 Big 800 GB data store on SAN RAID 5 Lun (each LUN will be contains 16 VMS)? or each VM will be deployed in separate small LUN 50 GB data store on SAN, RAID 5 and that this effect on the failure during the procedure on the DR Site if we choose BIG LUNs, also if this virtual machine includes 3 disks (store them on each disk on the different data store or the same data store)

    Thank you

    Remember that the virtual machine is a set of files and these files directly in your data store.  If you have a large store of data with multiple virtual machines, you must replicate the full data on the alternative site store in order to get to that data.  You can't really use greater SAN replication for just the simple vm in a data store.  SAN replication is not really aware of what is stored on it, she replied just blocks he knows.  You can copy the vm files individually as well, but it's more than a copy and not replication.  Otherwise, if you are concerned about vs some other vm, then using a small LUN would work better for you, or warehouses of data at multiple levels allows you to replicate the vm that are important to you and put the rest in a larger data store.

    FCIP/FC/IP doesn't really matter.  Until a table can talk to each other, you're fine.  Our secondary site is hundreds of miles away, and replicate us very well during the period of INQUIRY, from one table to the other.

    Yes, without SRM, you will need to manually register a virtual machine at the time, or write a script to work through all the.

  • New ESX5 host - questions see SAN storage data and much more

    Just installed a new vSphere host 5 and added to a cluster with 2 x 3.5 host (in my vCenter Server 5)

    3 questions.

    1. I can't see LUN (on SAN datastore). Have zoned out my new HBA etc and still no joy. Tried the host that it recharges and rescan option etc. Any ideas?

    2 - my 3.5 hosts I was able to specify different default gateways for my Console and VMKernel Service (both on the same vswitch). I have the Service Console configured vmkernel. 10.16.5.x and 172.16.5.x (I know there is no Service Console in vSphere 5\ESXi) but on my ESX5 host I can't specify different gateways for VMKernel and network management. I'm afraid that vmotion etc will not work between 3.5 hosts and host 5, because although the VMkernels have addresses in the same range, they have not the same gateway. I have to add a local route on the host ESX 5? Or am I wrong configured somewhere?

    3 minor irritation. My local drive in my new server is showing that the data store. Can it be hidden or changed to not be visible in the data store? I want to only display my SAN data stores.

    Thank you very much

    Steve

    (1) sounds like a SAN configuration problem - you should be able to see the LUN masking and zoning is correct in the FC switch and storage array.

    (2) you could specify wear two ways because the vmkernel and the Service Console were different and supposed to be on different networks - you no longer have a gateway single vmkernel - traffic will work as long as they are on the same subnet - a gateway is used only when you exit the subnet

    (3) I do not think it is possible to hide the local data store - but I could be wrong

  • ASM disk - based SAN LUN expansion

    Hi all
    I'm learning a bit about the ASM and best practices to follow properly set up/use it at its best.

    Using an external FC SAN storage, if I create a logical volume with a LUN number and expose this LUN to my server ASM, I can see it properly and add it to an ASM disk group.

    So far so good. After that, if I develop this LUN on the external storage (using the tools), I'm not able to see the new space of the DSO. Looks like Oracle somehow "partitioned" originally the LUN when I first added it to the instance of the DSO, and after the "marking" it, even if I increase the Volume, the "expansion" is not seen.

    Is there a way to tell ASM as ther IS actually more space available? If I "fdisk-l", I see the amount of space on the device. But the 'blocks' are always the old value...

    I know that the creation of another logic unit number and adding to the disk group, there is no problem, but I would rather be able to expand an existing LUN on my external storage to create new LUNS on it all the time... Please help me understand if what I have in mind is correct or not on a best practices perspective.

    Thanks for any help.

    Yes you're right. Add the 20 GB lun, you can with 0 downtime and then remove the old 10GB of the diskgroup lun (assuming that you don't change the 10 GB to 20 GB :)) If you hold rebalance low power, Re-balance I/O will be even not worth the performance system IO too muchl.) But the problem here is that hesitate to use only a single lun 20 GB as the entire disk to ASM diskgroup. If you increase the number of LUNs (disks asm) even by creating separate volumes on the same physical disks you will increase the number of logical I/O paths which contributes to the homogeneity of distrubution of I/O.

  • OK to mix 'of connection to the switch"and"close relay switch?

    Hi all

    I'm developing a test sequence using the card multiplexer 2527 to the track signals.  To configure the card, I use DAQmx switch functions.  In my application, I have a Subvi routine that imports the data from a spreadsheet Setup and run a loop for to set the configuration for each step (each iteration of the loop contains the channel for 2527 card information).  The topology is set on the first iteration, as well as the configuration of the path to the first string.

    My concern is this: I need to close the extra channels/relays without changing the topology or resetting the device.  In the first round, I use "connection to the switch" function to set the initial path, (ch0 to com0 for example).  Then in subsequent iterations of the loop, I use "Relay close switch" function to close the additional channels individually (for example k2).  In the end, when the measure is taken, both ch0 ch2 must be closed and routed to com0.  This implementation is so sure, or am I somehow to make the adjustments to the initial loop?

    I would like to test this with the hardware, but it is not yet available.

    Also, I realize that I could use independent topology and configure all relays individually for each step, but I hope that my approach will be easier and safer.

    Please notify.  Thank you.

    GSinMN

    Hello GSinMN,

    It's OK to mix 'of connection to the switch"and"Close relay switch"If you understand what's happening below. "Switch Connect" connects two channels by closing a path of relay between the channels, then "Close relay switch" can be used to change the State of the individual relays. If you are not careful you can mess up your connection by activating / deactivating relays that are part of the route connecting your channels.

    "Also, I realize that I could use independent topology and configure all relays individually for each step, but I hope that my approach will be easier and safer."

    I would recommend the topology independent if you want to stick with connections to channels only. http://zone.NI.com/reference/en-XX/help/375472G-01/switch/2527_independent/

    Initial connection:

    CH0-> pcom0

    pcom0plus-> icom0plus

    pcom0minus-> icom0minus

    icom0-> com0

    In each future iteration just connect to the next to pcom0 channel (which will be indirectly connect it to com0):

    CH1-> pcom0

    CH2-> pcom0

  • Front Panel Bank of switches and related indicators

    I am the design of a test system.  I would like a Bank of the individual switches on the control panel to turn the test case.  I figured out how to do this.  And I can do banks for the indication LEDs (pass/fail) and the field of digital test result.  But, I want to tie them together.  I guess I should start by using a cluster rather than a table.  But how to get banks to act as a single group?

    As I have so far, I have a back of switches and a Bank of indicators (of the switching status) for all just play.  The indicators do not align with the switches. I'd like a match of 1 to 1 for easy operator use.  When I use 'properties' to develop the Bank of the indicator, it won't take the number.  It is limited internally somehow.

    How about an array of clusters? Easy to use and easy to watch, all lined up.

  • Details of the 536304-001 HP Power On / Off switch and cable LED Assembly for the Z400

    Can someone help me with the P5 front header pinout on the motherboard Z400 or on the HP 536304-001 power switch and LED to the Z400 Cable Assembly?   I'm getting to is a Z400 motherboard in a case of XW8000. I know that 536304-001 does not fit in the case of XW8000 but the XW8000 part equivalent seems to have mostly the same connections. double color led, led hard drive, power button / stop.   I can see an illustration that 536304-001 use 4 connections on the side to key of header and 2 on the other. Cable colors are red, green, black and 3 white. There are also other connections to the temperature thermistor that I would not intend to use (unless explicitly required for Z400 motherboard).

    Here's a panel header pinout before Z400 P5 motherboard:

    Find "missing" pin key 14 to steer this diagram properly.

    Pins 2 and 4 go to the power LED.  This LED is two-way, with green in a sense (normal) and Red (diagnosis failure) in the other.  If the LEDs back to back are installed between pins 2 and 4, on lights.  If green it does not illuminate during normal operation, move the pins to the pair of diodes.

    Pins at 15, 17 and 18 are chassis ID pins.  It's OK to let those pins unconnected.

    Pins 6 and 8 are the power button pins.  Connect a normally open push switch between pins 6 and 8.  Do not attach any tension or Chin-ups to this switch.

    RESET # may not work, but it is a prototye signal.  A switch push-button normally open between pin 7 and 6 (GND) could make it work.  It's OK to let those pins unconnected.

    Terminals 11 and 12 are the thermal diode in the panel cable Assembly before Z400.  The system starts without the thermal diode, but fans can operate at full speed all the time, or may oscillate in speed (several times to go from slow to high-speed and back).  This will make the system very noisy.

  • Why the fast user switching and the new Windows Search use the Terminal Services?

    Recently, I was struck by a piece of really bad, malicious malware that totally trashed my operating system.  Therefore, as I rebuild my system, I am applying the appropriate safety precautions.  Among the recommendations of Microsoft is to reduce your footprint of security by disabling unnecessary services.  One of these services that I thought I didn't need was Terminal Server services, since it is a way for a person to get to my machine remotely.

    It turns out that, however, other services that I want to use, such as Fast user Switching and window new search utility, depend on the Terminal Server Services.  It makes no sense to me from a safety point of view.  This seems to be a bad design decision, because security trumps utility.

    If Microsoft is listening, I would like to know why you made this decision and you have changed in Windows 7?

    Second, is there a way to always have the Terminal services Server running and at the same time cut access remotely through this service?

    I don't know about the 'new' Windows Search, but what about the fast user switching you ask to run several sessions of Windows when you switch between users (a session for each user connected) and the only way that Windows can do is to act as a quasi Terminal Server, it needs Terminal Server services to run multiple sessions.
