basic network switch

Hi first of all, I'm not a master of the nets... Data: - I have a PowerConnect 6224 - I have 7 NAS connected to pass - 1 GB - I have a server with 4 GB Ethernet x 1 connected in the 4-port switch with aggregation of links - all THE WORK FINE - which means I use only 4 G to ingest data into 7 NAS. I usually need to ingest 300-500-1000 GB on each NAS during the night (very rare will be used at the time of the day) problem: when data packets are going to 'arrive' in switch will be send to all ports of the switch. This means that port 1 switch (connected to NAS1) will get dataNAS1, dataNAS2,... .dataNAS7 (but will drop to 7 dataNAS2). How much this extra package will affect my data transfer / performance? If will affect... How can I maximize data transfer? Someone suggest me something like this: VLAN 7, each VLAN will contain the NAS port and LAG ports. LAG ports will be common to all VIRTUAL networks. But I do not know how to proceed and if will increase my switch performance... I hope I do a good explanation of my problem. Best topic, Daniel

The transfer of data is done in the same VLAN should not present a decrease in performance. Where you can see a slow down, it's to LAG 4 port connection to the server. transfer large files of 7 different sources at the same time is going to get bottle to pass to the server LAG.

  • Connection to CVS GigE camera via a network switch

It is a fundamental and very simple question!

I intend to connect two GigE cameras to NI CVS-1458RT for an application of Imaging. When I tested the configuration in MAX, I realized that I can connect the cameras directly to the PoE ports, or alternatively, connect the cameras directly to the network switch and in both cases, connect the CVS to my network via its ethernet port. I was wondering if there is a benefit by connecting directly the VCA cameras, if I do not anticipate supply their Poe or if my switch has PoE Betacam.

    Thank you

Usually, you always want your cameras on dedicated lines, or at least only sharing bandwidth with other devices. The mechanism of transport used by GigE Vision isn't really sharing good bandwidth with other devices. If you only share the bandwidth on a link given with other devices, you can throttle each take only a percentage of the total bandwidth. If you have devices without camera on the link, they don't usually have a mechanism to control the gap inter-frame limitation insofar as GigE vision made which would be necessary for properly sharing the bandwidth without remove the packages of bandwidth.

If you end up sharing one of the ports for the operation and configuration of the CVS on the network, you will be at the risk of losing image data packets whenever the rest of the traffic is sent. Although there are mechanisms in place to return data, these add latency and jitter to your purchase.

  • How to connect two network switches Force10 S4810P

    Hello world

We just bought two S4810P Force10 network switches and we want to install on two adjacent brackets. They will be used to interconnect computing and NAS storage, installed in two baskets serving mainly local connections.

We intend to use ports QSFP + to connect the two switches, and I have two questions.

    1. hardware configuration: what are the best transceivers and cables to use in this case?

    2. configuration of the software: should we use stacking or virtual link trunking? the information I've read so far does not give me a definitive answer.

Thank you very much in advance for your help!

The server room is already has some inside wiring? If so it be a transceiver that will percolate pre-existing cables. There are also some direct attach cables ranging from 0.5 m to 50 m. Here is an example of a cable direct attach: http://dell.to/23huDl7

the best course of action would be to contact your sales representative and let them know what your needs are. They can get you city for right connection hardware.

the VLT and stack the two have the same goal of redundancy, but go about it in different methods with different warnings warning for both. In both scenarios, the redundancy is dependent on each device connection linking the two switches. If you do not do this, then it may be better to let the independent switches. Here is a good blog that compares the VLT and stacking.

Yes, you will need to manually change.

    ethernet(n).connectionType = "custom"
    ethernet(n).vnet = "vmnet(n)"

  • Disable HA or use the Maintenance Mode when the upgrade of the network switches

    Hello

We expect the upgrade to our network switches. In the case where the hosts loose network connection I want to avoid having HA suddenly and guests try to run current virtual machines. What is best practices for cluster HA-activated in case guests loose network connection?

Disable HA or put all hosts in maintenance mode? Or is there another suggestion?

    Vickers

If you are using vSphere 4 there is option to disable HA response to failure without disabling agents HA HA. This option has been added specifically for when you know you're going to do the maintenance of the network and that you do not want HA answer when the management network is down. It is much faster to do that that in order to completely disable the HA or put all hosts in maintenance mode.

  • Question put in basic network

May switches service nets under different?

I work with a company that uses a kit EZXS16W switch 16-port workgroup to which all nodes are connected.

I put in a server in a company where I want to isolate 6 of 16 employees who are connected to this switch and make the members area of my server.

The company has a T1 connected to a box which is apparently managing DHCP and IP numbers. It's using the standard 192.168.1.x subnet.

I don't think I can I achieve what I want by hanging just switch server as just another node and then create a different subnet for him and six users, because that would take them on the net under Internet happens.

The EZXS16W is apparently not managed, so I can't set up a VLAN.

But the server has two network cards and is set to be a controller of domain, NAT, Firewall and DHCP server. So I ask myself, can I connect the two network adapters on the server to the switch so that a network adapter is the sending/receipt of Internet traffic on the main (192.168.1.x) subnet with the other configured manually to a different subnet (10.0.2.x) network adapter, and then manually configure the 6 users to use 10.0.2.1 gateway by default so I have basically two networks operated by the same switch?

OR I need to connect my server to the main switch with a nic, buy another switch to connect to my second nic and do six users will connect to the second switch?

It may be possible that if you want to communicate, if you want to have access to internet at the 6 users with 10.0.2.x network, it won't work...

Even if you connect your server to the main switch with a nic, buy another switch for you to connect to my second nic and do six users will connect to the second switch, it does not connect to the internet...

    Don Jarmon

    Hi Don,

There is no report canned for this information.

The workaround is to create a group called 'Test' or whatever you want to call. Put a device in this group. Then go to reports-> Network Interface high-speed percentage/capacity and choose the group that you did (which has a single device).

  • Adding the iSCSI network switch

    Hello

We have an iSCSI network for guests of vSphere 5.1 EQL boxes. The network is 192.168.0.0/24, we use the switches PC5548 and we have three groups EQL. Everything is configured following best practices from DELL, and everything is kind of okay job.

Since we are affected by the poor performance of our SQL servers virtualized and troubleshooting led switches as a guilty suspect I want to try to use other switches to know.

So I intend to add a pair of parallel to the PC5548 cisco switches and connect a host and a group of PS to those (where the SQL VM reside) and see the difference, but my question is that I can use the same network 192.168.0.0. / 24 although cisco and dell switches are not physically connected. VMotion work?

You shouldn't use the entry level switches with 10 tables. The interlink trunk has 80% of eql bandwidh. You can consider buying Dell Force10 switches with buffers of large size and low latency.

    Kind regards

  • How to map a network switch manually

    Hello

I have a Data Center remote I'm trying to draw, without visiting the site and the tracing of cables. Because I can access the table of addresses on each switch, what is the best way to know if button A is connected to the switch B? the switches in my MS are stacked, which complicates things a bit.

For example when I look at my MAC address table, almost all my switches have a MAC by port, port of the channel apart (I think it's a link aggregate port) which shows the MAC addresses belonging to Dell, Cisco and other devices. How can I find out the opening of the canal in which plugs directly? Get a Dell switch or say a Cisco switch?

    Thank you

Just in case someone else needs it, I discovered the following invaluable tools:

Use the web browser on each switch to view nieghbors LLDP (real gives of switch ports and can also show the details announced on non Dell kit)
Use the commands 'show deck' and «see the mac»
See the neighbouring ISDP is also useful (depends on the switch)
Open Network Manager was not as smart hoped for example, with the SNMP strings to two directly connected switches, I could not find a way for the NOM give the link real ports

  • Internet through the network Switch

    Hey,.

So, assuming that there is a switch of fiber optic network in a building and the apartments in the building are connected to the Internet through this switch via standard Ethernet cables and the other end of the Ethernet cable is a router without wire-House. Now, my question is: the other apartments in the building are connected to the switch access Homegroup LAN/Windows (or in other words: computers in another apartment)?
    Thanks in advance.

Your individual home router should be a DSL (no ADSL) router and can be identified by the fact that although all ports are physically identical (so a LAN cable would be all of them), is not separate and labeled on the lines of the cable/DSL/WAN port. It is this port which is connected to the backbone of building connected to the incoming fiber router

As with any home router between this port and your port WiFi/LAN is a firewall. By default, the firewall does not allow incoming connections from the WAN port the LAN port. Ideally one who set up the router base also fiber not allow traffic pass directly between its own LAN ports which are actually links to the clients in each apartment, although this can not be done because they know that firewall routers are used for each client.

  • Options grayed out after that migration vSwitch0 vmk0 to distributed network switch

I have a bunch of ESXi 6 guests, where I would like the default vSwitch0 to a vDS management interface. However, it seems that the management network gets screwed more or less of this operation

First I tried to simply migrate the physical interface and vmkernel to vds = no chance (resets the form configuration time to hosts)

Then I tried to connect a NIC seconday to the same switch, adding as a management console interface, make two interfaces marked as management interfaces. The uplink of vSwitch0 is replaced by the new interface and the vds is mapped to the original management interface. From this point, I can migrate vmk0 to the distributed switch and remove the extra card. All good, at least at first glance. The army continues to communicate with vCenter and so on. However, return to the console options to "Network adapters" and "VLANS (optional)" are grayed out. The only way I managed to get back them is again a reset to the default settings of the management network.

After som test front and rear, it seems that these options disappear as soon as vm0 leaves vSwitch0?

Any ideas how to solve this problem?

The army continues to communicate with vCenter and so on. However, back to the console options for "Network adapters" and "VLANS (optional)" are grayed out. The only way I managed to get back them is again a reset to the default settings of the management network.

I guess that's the expected behavior, because once your vmk0 has been migrated to vDS, now the vDS control plan which is with vCenter server will allow you to change these settings as network card and VLAN ID etc.

  • Migrate standard network switch to VDS

    Hello

I intend to migrate little my clusters that are running in a standard switch to DVS. Need help to automate this process.

    My scenario is:

In a 15cluster environment are present 5 are already running in DVS
but 10 clusters are still a standard switch so I need to migrate the
    already existing DVSwitch.

By taking a cluster of 10node as an example.
    (1) mgmt and vmkernel are on a vswitch (ex: vswitch 0)
    [vswitch 0 - connected with 2 vmincs]

    (2) virtual machine in a vswitch portgroup (Ex: vswitch 1)
    [vswitch 1 - connected with 2 vmincs]

On all groups, we need to migrate only machine virtual portgroup
or vmnetwork (ex: vswitch 1) to off-network vmkernel mgmt DVs.
    My plan:
First add all cluster hosts to DVswitch
Remove all a redundant vmnic (ex: vmnic3) connected to the machine virtual portgroup. (Ex: vswitch) 1 and adds it to DVswitch.
Now migrate all virtual machines connected to a standard switch to dvs. (Here I hit)
Is it possible if VLAN 10 (standard switch) then consists of 5 virtual machines
check the VLAN 10 DVS and portgroup network set to 10 VLAN adapter on the
SMV (I mean can we compare VLAN ID on VSS and VDS and inspiring than us)
need to migrate virtual machines to a DVS.)

    As below:

    VLAN_58_VDS.JPG

    VLAN_58_VSSD.JPG
If it works correctly then you have to check the State of all virtual machines (ignore power VM off) ping
If ok then proceed to map the second network card (ex: vmnic4) VSS for VDS.

    Use the Script:

    # ESXi hosts to migrate from VSS to VDS
    $vmhost_array = @("host1","host2")
    # Adding Hosts to existing VDswitch
    $vds = Get-VDSwitch -Name "SM_UAT"
    foreach ($vmhost in $vmhost_array) {
    # Add ESXi host to VDS
    Write-Host "Adding" $vmhost "to" $vds_name
    $vds | Add-VDSwitchVMHost -VMHost $vmhost | Out-Null
    # Migrate pNICs to VDS
    Write-Host "Adding vmnic2 to" $vds
    $vmhostNetworkAdapter = Get-VMHost $vmhost |Get-VirtualSwitch -Name "vswitch1" |select -ExpandProperty Nic |select -First 1
    $vds | Add-VDSwitchPhysicalNetworkAdapter -VMHostNetworkAdapter $vmhostNetworkAdapter -Confirm:$false
    # Migrate VMs from VSS to VDS
Write-Host "migrating vms from VSS to VDS"
    }

    Maybe try like this

    # ESXi hosts to migrate VSS to VDS

    $vmhost_array = get-VMHost-name 10.50.37.31

    # get existing VDswitch

    $vds = get-VDSwitch-name "Pre-production".

    foreach ($vmhost to $vmhost_array)

    {

    # Add ESXi hosts service VDS

    Write-Host-object 'Add' $vmhost 'to' $vds
