  Sorry if this is a VMware 101 type question, but I can't seem to find any info on how things are configured in terms laymans.  Once I'm a little more commonly the VM talk I have much reading aligned.

  Given what you said now what you want to achieve, I think that the best way to achieve what you want is just to share disks directly from your host OS use something like NFS or Samba, according to what the customers are going to be. I have a 1 TB drive in one of my hosts openSUSE, formatted in ext3, that I use as a data store for my virtual machines running locally on the host computer. I then this shared via NFS so that ESXi servers can use ISO images I on he records duplication and he is also shared through Samba so that my Windows clients can connect to it. Probably not ideal, but it's a host R & D rather than the pure production. In the past, I also used iSCSI Enterprise Target (EIT) to expose the guest readers so that I can 'play' with clustering in a Microsoft environment.

  Have a simple game with some VM first to get an idea of how it all works, in particular with regard to the virtual disks, data warehouses and so on.
