Can't share a public folder
We have several computers in an office that appear on the 4 different networks. Most are Win7, one or 2 are XP. All are executed in a switch, then a common gateway. How can I get them all on 1 network so that we can put in place a public shared folder to access the same files? I'm not the most brilliant, nor the lower bulb in the box, but according to me, I lack something.
Hi Candace,
- What is the version of the Windows 7 machine that you use (Starter, Home Basic, professional, Ultimate or Enterprise)?
If your organization uses Active Directory domains to manage its network, you may need to know the domain that a computer belongs to so that you can access other computers and resources on the network.
System opened by clicking on the button start , right click on computer and then click Properties.
If your computer is connected to a domain, under the name of the computer, domain, and workgroup settings, you will see the domain name that your computer belongs. If your computer is connected to a workgroup, you will see the name of the workgroup your computer belongs.
Or you can just ask IT member of the team if these computers are connected to the domain network.

I can't access my public folder
When I click on that folder I get an error message saying "You not currently have permission to access this folder" and tells me to click on continue access as an administrator. I still like I usually would when I get a message like that because I'm the only user on this computer and I am an administrator. Then gives me this message saying "You have been denied permission to access this folder" and "to access this folder, you will need to use the Security tab. I click on the Security tab, but it gives me a different error message saying "the properties for this item are not available.
I do not understand how, I am not able to access this folder when I am the only user and administrator on this computer.
So I decided to right click on the public record, I can't access and click Properties. I click on the Security tab, and he said to me 'you may not to view or edit the permissions of the object settings. If I click on advanced and it gives me the same message for each of the tabs and more the owner one. Under the current owner: he says "Unable to display current owner." So I click on edit to change the owner of my name. I click on apply, but still another error reading message "Unable to set new owner on the Public (\\***-PC).» Access is denied.
As for help, I read that administrators are supposed to be able to access any folder or change the owner of a file or folder when they want. But I have limited permissions and I'm running in circles...
This issue is important enough to me too and don't know what I'll do if I'm unable to open :( Any kind of help will be appreciated here and if I didn't describe the error of B.S. messages I get enough, you are in my shoes because he gives me nothing in the measure of how to solve this problem.
OMG I thought about it! Somehow I was playing around with the option 'share' folder. I was given access to the permissions for the folder, and under everyone, he refused total control. Switched to authorize and everything works fine now. :) I have the impression that such a computer expert...

All firewall disabled, Windows and McAfee on all computers on the network.
All VIRUS Protection disabled on all PCs
BOX A sharing the shared Docs
Sharing Docs user = everyone
Everyone has a FULL ACCESS.
NetBios is enabled.Configuration of the Working Group:
Workgroup = AREA A = ZONE B = MSHOME
I can successfully Ping BOX A go BOX B and vice versa.Measures to control the error:
I have Open View Workgroup Computers and BOX A and BOX B see each other and to themselves.
The BOX can access files of the shared BOX B.
BOX B cannot access the shared files A BOX.
BOX B can access its own files shared over the network.
BOX A cannot NOT ACCESS its own files shared over the network.I try next? Why can't display BOX A there own shared via the network, the documents?
I'm still not win... any suggestions?
Thanks for the tips. I found the problem.

Cannot access my public folder when my firewall is on
I can't access my public folder when my firewall is turned on. But can access it when my firewall is disabled. I already activated the public folder sharing and file sharing.
Also, I don't see computers connected to my computer when their firewall is enabled and can see when their firewall is disabled. Why is this?
You must configure your firewall properly instead of turning market.
Excellent, comprehensive, but easy to understand article on sharing files/printer under Vista. Contains information about sharing printers and files, and the folders:
http://TechNet.Microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb727037.aspx
Configure the firewall on all machines to allow traffic to local area network (LAN) as being approved. With the Windows Firewall, it means which allows file sharing / print on the Exceptions tab normally run the XP Network Setup Wizard will take care of this for these machines. The only "witch hunt", it will turn on the XPSP2 Windows Firewall. If you are not running a third-party firewall or you have an antivirus/security with its own firewall component program, then you're fine. With a third-party firewall, I usually set up the allocation of LAN with an IP address range. E.g. would be 192.168.1.0 - 192.168.1.254. Obviously you would substitute your correct subnet. Refer to the safety of any third party program or the user forums for how to correctly configure its firewall. Do not run more than one firewall. DON'T STOP FIREWALLS; CONFIGURE THEM CORRECTLY.
If you would like more information, please provide these details:
1 levels systems operation/versions/Service Pack of all machines.
2. name of antivirus/security software used.

How can I share files between Windows 7 Pro and a Mac with os x?
I have Windows 7 Professional and my colleague had a Mac with os x installed. We are physically in the same room, sharing a wifi connection. How to share files between two computers? That each of them should do on his computer?
If you display links, please check beforehand that the procedure for the mac is here. I found in the internet or other of the procedures for older systems Win or network only between Win 7 PCs.
MOSH
Of course, you can do it easily. In fact, the implementation of sharing on Win7 last month was almost as easy as it is on OS X. ;-) I find that the snow leopard has the same bugginess of show Windows machines only randomly in the sharing of the Finder section, as it did in Leopard, however. I usually connect to Windows machines by opening a window of Finder and using go > connect to server > smb://Windows-computer-name instead. In the Win7 box, I have the network to the desktop icon (you can get this to customize > change icon).
On OS X, make sure you have checked in the file sharing system preferences > sharing. Click the Options button, and then select "share files and folders using SMB." Add the shared directories as you wish.
You must create accounts/passwords user on the Mac and Windows 7. You do not need to be logged into the same account on all machines and assigned to each user account passwords can be different; accounts/passwords just need to exist and to match on all machines. DO NOT NEGLECT TO CREATE PASSWORDS, EVEN IF ONLY OF SIMPLE. If you want a machine to boot directly to the desktop in Win7 (a particular user account) for convenience, you can do this.
Start > Search box > type: netplwiz [Enter]
Click continue (or provide an administrator password) when you are prompted by UACUncheck "users must enter a user name and password to use this computer". Select a user account to connect automatically by clicking on the account you want to highlight and press OK. Enter the password for this user account (when it exists) when you are prompted. Leave blank if there is no password (null).
You can find options to logon automatically for OS X in system preferences > accounts.
On Win7, go to control panel > all items in Control Panel > network and sharing Center. Click on "change the advanced sharing settings. You do not want to use Homegroup.
Discovery of plug in the network

Turn on the sharing section Public folder sharing
Plug the password protected sharingConfigure the firewall on all machines to allow traffic to local area network (LAN) as being approved. With the Windows Firewall, Configuration File and Printer Sharing ON will take care of that for these machines, and if you are not running a third-party firewall or you have an antivirus/security with its own firewall component program, then you're fine. With a third-party firewall, I usually set up the allocation of LAN with an IP address range. E.g. would be 192.168.1.0 - 192.168.1.254. Obviously you would substitute your correct subnet. OS X Firewall is done in System Preferences > Security. Click the lock to make changes, and then click the Advanced button to ensure that SMB sharing is allowed. If you set up in the share pod, it will be.
On Win7, create shares as desired. I usually just share the Public, users desktop folder and all hard drives of additional data in the system. MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!

I was grabbing a W-9 for commercial purposes and has sent through Gmail using the Adobe Reader software and unwittingly saved to a 'public folder '.
To clarify if you use the sharing option, I was invited with a box that said something along the lines, "File will be saved in a public share folder."
My question is, how do I remove my document with sensitive information of this public folder?
I guess I found my answer. Re: can't share more to Dropbox or sharing to gmail, I get an error access denied or file not found. Please help
The second to the last comment explains that the "public record" is actually a temp folder on your mobile device and is supposed to be deleted after that its function is made.

How can I add a new folder to "my network places"?
I have several folders on my local network that appear when I click on "my network places". I need to add another folder for the documents in 2011 and don't know how to do it.
Just share the extra folder.
To share a folder in XP, right-click and select sharing and security > sharing tab > and equip a check share this folder on the network and, possibly, to allow the network users to change my files. Enter a share name > apply > OK. Simply share the highest level folder, for example not each subfolder. A small hand should appear on the icons of the folders. You can also drag the files you want to share the Shared Documents folder.
