Hello Nrbolton1,
Thank you for visiting the Microsoft answers Forum.
Try disabling UAC.
If the problem handles Disabling UAC uninstall all third-party plugins or codecs, sounds like a WMP plant where he has no administrator rights. How to turn off UAC?
Click Start > Control Panel > accounts user and family safety > user accounts > select your username > then click on change user account control settings and uncheck the box. Restart your computer for this setting to take effect. Please post back with the results.

cannot open a wmv file because a required codec is not available
MacBook Mac OS X Version 10.7.5
2.16 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
2 GB 667 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
QuickTime 7.7.1
Try to open a wmv file, I received the following message
When I go to "Tell Me More", I don't find an answer there.
Any suggestions?
QuickTime no has ever himself supported the opening of the WMV files, it's always the case. There is a piece of third-party suppliers of software that can add this feature known as Flip4Mac, it was free to simply play WMV files but is now no longer free. (Microsoft in the past were subsidizing the cost of this software.)
See http://www.telestream.net/flip4mac/overview.htm
Your other option is to use something other than QuickTime, in which case the free VLC software will do the job, you can get VLC here. http://www.videolan.org/

Cannot open the WMV files.
Just bought a new computer and when I try to download a file WMV, Internet Security explore comes up and asks me if I want to allow, click on allow and I get the message: Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. May not permissions to access you the item.
When I click Details I get this message: name... Pack\MediaPlayerClassic\mpc-HC.exesource-MPC.HC@SourceForge
CST: CodecPack\MediaPlayerClassic\mpc-hc.exe
I found a download for Media player classic, but when I tried to download my antivirus (Kaspersky) came with a warning that the file was not signed and that it was a potentially dangerous download if I did not.
Would appreciate any help I could get on it.
Hi ramrod711,
Welcome to the Microsoft community newsgroups
Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. May not permissions to access you the item.
The question stem also from your security program such Kaspersky or a /Defender of Windows Firewall which can have parameters as to not not to perform certain tasks and does not download the file. I suggest you temporary disable antivirus and firewall and check the result again. You must activate new security that you was disabled programs.
Important note: Ensure that the download comes from a reliable source and then disable the security software or allow the file to download. Will not play WMV video files
I'm having a problem to play wmv. video files. I have windows vista. I can play music in Windows Media Player, but can not play any video, that is sent to me by e-mail. WMP crashes and give a message saying that Windows Media Player has encountered a problem while playing the file. For any additional help, click Help on the Web. I click web help and receive nothing. The drivers are up to date. Why I can't play videos? Thank you
Hello Henry Michael,.
Please relay the e-mail program you use. You can also try to save the file directly on your local computer, and then check if the file is being read correctly. If there has been any recent codec package installation, you can also try to temporarily uninstall the codec package and then check out the question.
Thank you
