Cannot rename files or folders.

Compaq Presario SR1303WM, Windows XP service pack 3. A month ago the computer had a lighting strike and I lost everything and had to use the restore function. I created a name slightly different admin and already had a name of admin, so that gave me 2 users with administrator rights. When I log in as an administrator, I can't rename any files or folders. Another name for the administrator to rename.

Carl, if I were you, I would like to delete the Admin account that does not allow you to change the names and start over again.  A problem occurred when the account was created.

Here is an article on how to solve the problem of not being able to rename or move folders in Vista: http://www.winhelponline.com/blog/unable-to-rename-or-move-folders-in-windows-vista/.

The last post in this thread contains a link to the program that supposedly fixes the problem (although I have not tried) editing of registry: http://forums.techguy.org/windows-vista/626307-windows-vista-unable-rename-folders.html

Before making one of the procedures above, back up your registry just to be on the safe side.  Here's how: http://www.adamsdvds.co.uk/tutorials/vista/regedit/backup.php.

If those who do not work, it is probably a question of ownership or permissions.  Give yourself full rights in the folder (and perhaps records parent if the permissions are inherited as described in the Advanced section) and also take possession of it.  Then you should be able to rename it.  Here are some procedures to help you:

To view your permissions, right-click on the file/folder, click Properties, and check the Security tab.  Check the permissions you have by clicking on your user name (or group of users).  Here are the types of permissions, you may have: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-vista/What-are-permissions.  You must be an administrator or owner to change the permissions (and sometimes, being an administrator or even an owner is not sufficient - there are ways to block access (even if a smart administrator knows these ways and can move them - but usually should not because they did not have access, usually for a very good reason).)  Here's how to change the permissions of folder under Vista: http://www.online-tech-tips.com/windows-vista/set-file-folder-permissions-vista/.  To add take and the issuance of right of permissions and ownership in the right click menu (which will make it faster to get once it is configured), see the following article: http://www.mydigitallife.info/2009/05/21/take-and-grant-full-control-permissions-and-ownership-in-windows-7-or-vista-right-click-menu/.

To resolve this problem with folders, appropriating the files or the drive (as an administrator) and give you all the rights.  Right-click on the folder/drive, click Properties, click the Security tab and click on advanced and then click the owner tab.  Click on edit, and then click the name of the person you want to give to the property (you may need to add if it is not there--or maybe yourself). If you want that it applies to subfolders and files in this folder/drive, then check the box to replace the owner of subcontainers and objects, and click OK.  Back and now there is a new owner for files and folders/player who can change the required permissions.  Here is more information on the ownership of a file or a folder: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67717-take-ownership-file.html.  To add take ownership in the menu of the right click (which will make it faster to get once it is configured), see the following article: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/.

Good luck and I hope that one of these solutions help!

    ·         What is the format of the file?

    ·         You have deleted the files you can try to move to folders?

  • Cannot copy files and folders to another folder

Whenever I try to COPY a group of files and folders 1 folder to another folder, Vista wants only to allow me to MOVE them.  What is my problem?

Select the files to copy (using the command CTRL to select more than one non sequential order) and once they are all chosen type CTRL-C.  Then move to the folder where you want to copy and click header file and type CTRL-V.  Perhaps this method of copying files won't work where others do not.

    I hope this helps.

  • Cannot move files or folders to one drive to another

LR5 will not allow me to move the raw files or folders that I have stored on an external drive on my drive hard or inside the disc itself.  He said that «there was an error copying files to the destination...» ».  I think the problem may be with the Toshiba v73600-c external disk formatting. I don't remember format until I started using it several years ago, and I don't know how to determine the current format of the disk.  For what it's worth, , I am able to move raw files I have stored on my hard drive on another external drive that has been recently formatted OS X extended (journaled).  How can I either move these files to one of the OS X Extended

Anyone installed a utility, unless LR5 is one such utility.  The Toshiba drive was bought as compatible with Mac/PC.  What I didn't know, is that it was read only for Mac.

I bought Paragon NTFS for Mac 14 earlier today at the Apple Support suggestion, SR. Tech.  It works well.  Problem solved.

  • Satellite A500 - cannot rename files Windows 7

    Hi all

I am running Win7 on laptop Satellite A500.

I'm renaming of windows files I downloaded. When I right click on a file to Rename dialog box is black until I throw the slider down there. Then I see the options. File name was also just a line through it, again until I clicked, revealing the name of file.

Also as soon as it started to happen if I click on the tab start menu pop is in all directions with a few options in part showing or missing all together.

    Can you please help?

    Hello

  • why I cannot rename files

When I click on the option new/create a new folder, a new folder is created with the name of new folder 1, 2, 3 and so on.
Why I am not able to rename all the files.
As soon as I click to rename, a mistake
    Explorer.exe - Application error
The instruction at "0x8b0851ff" referenced memory at "0x8b0851ff". The memory could not write. »
    is shown.

What happens when you try to rename them?

Normally, when you click New > folder new folder is created with the name of "New folder", highlighted within an open box.  See arrow to the left in this picture--> http://vkart.com/basicdreamweaver/images/new-folder.jpg

If you start to type - before anything else - the letters you type will replace 'New folder' under the name of your new folder.

As soon as you click the mouse anywhere outside of this area, the name of the folder "glue".  At this point, you can rename to the usual, by doing a right click on the folder and selecting "Rename" (which gives you the "open box" containing the file name highllighted).
