Cascading of wireless routers. How?

Hello!

I need 2 routers cascade, but I can't use threads (at least for the moment), to extend the coverage of my private home network.

First router is a WRT610Nv1, connected via PPPoE for my ISP and Internet. The two radio freq (2.4 & 5 MHz) are activated but I use mostly the 2.4 with the devices.

Second router is an E2000, 2 floors below. During this second device, I would like to connect some cables (XBOX) and some wireless device (computers). It would be ok to configure E2000 as an Extender (same IP subnet) but I can't find any option or similar configuration to use WDS.

Currently the E2000 place is taken by a 3rd router (WRT150Nv1.1 with firmware WW - DRT) acting as a Repeater bridge (over 2.4 MHz) but I want to dismiss this 3rd possibly using 5 MHz and didn't want to put the dd - wrt firmware in E2000.

Is it possible to connect WRT610N and E2000 cascade wireless? How can I configure them?

Thanks in advance for any suggestion...

Concerning

Roberto

No you can not mount cascade two Linksys wireless routers, you must use a thread.  However, there are 3rd party firmware that can do this.  Make a search for DD - WRT and discover their firmware.

  • Help cascading two Linksys routers

Hi, I tried to cascade two Linksys routers, but it did not work for me. Maybe you could help us. The first (which has the connection of the cable modem) is the brand new E4200, and the second is the former WRT54GCv3.

That's how I want cascading them:

    ···································································
    Linksys E4200 ----(wireless)----(Desktop PC)·······················
    gw: 192.168.1.1 ·············|--(Laptop)···························
    ······|······················|--(iPad)·····························
    ······~······················|--(Home Server)······················
    ····(PLC)··························································
    ······~····························································
    ······|····························································
    Linksys WRT54GCv3 ·················································
    (Router mode|DHCP/NAT disabled) --(wireless)----(Playstation 3)····
    gw: 192.168.1.2 ·····························|--(Samsung BD-C8500)·
    ···································································

However, the WRT54GCv3 does not receive the IP address of the DHCP E4200. I also tried to connect directly (without the PLC), even specifying a static IP address on the router second, but I got the same results.

I have to State, that I will not change the gateway IP/first router because I have a web server and game works with a static IP address and I don't want to put it temporarily offline due to adjust the network settings.

    Thanks for your support!

I searched the forum for you and found your answer.

  • Addition of wireless routers in series with the existing network

I have a client who wants to add at least 3 Wireless throughout their existing network routers. The problem is that these routers must be in the same subnet as the existing network. Oh, we use routers Linksys WRT610N. By default, routers set up a new subnet with a DHCP assigned IP of the primary subnet. I was able to change the static WAN IP, but I do not know how to configure the rest. The point of this is that if a user connected via the ethernet cable or wireless signal, they should be able to access the same network resources. I chatted with support, but they are not allowed to help what it isn't is not a "standard" configuration Anyone can shed some light on this subject? I've done this before with another customer, but its been a few years and it's a different router.

    Thank you!

You don't want a router. You want a wireless access point. You have wireless routers that you do not use as routers, but only as access points. A router by definition routes traffic between several subnets connected to the various interfaces (LAN and WAN). This kind of configuration is not what the WRT is built for and that's why support said you that it is not a standard configuration for a WRT.

You can use a WRT as simple access point.

Reconfigure the router via its web interface. Connect a computer to the router first.

    1. set the LAN IP address on a free IP address in the existing network.
    2. make sure NOT to set a static IP address on the type of internet connection.
    3. on the main configuration page turn off the DHCP server.
    4. now save the settings. You will lose the connection.
    5. unplug the computer and one of the numbered LAN ports of wire to your existing network.

Now you can access the web interface of the WRT to the new LAN IP address. All wired to the other 3 LAN ports and everything wirelessly connected has access to the network directly.

is it possible to connect 2 computers 2 different 1 modem wireless routers?

Why do you have 2 routers?

Depends on the design of the modem. It probably only supports a connection. So, you'll probably end up making a wired connection between modem and "1 router" and if you really need a second wireless router, install a wired connection between the 2 routers.

As you can see it's not a fast connection wireless card or something like that.

First of all, it would be very interesting to know the name of your unit, because I know if your laptop has a wireless card or if it of possible to update the device with the Mini-PCI Wireless card.

If your laptop has a wireless card so you need activate the wireless antenna. The switch on the side of the unit, you should find. In addition, choose the wifi with the FN + F8 key combination.
Well, now you have an AccesPoint in your neighborhood. If there isn't one available then you should see it. Go to network connections. Here, you must select the list of wireless network in network and refresh.

But if you have a wireless card so you need to upgrade your laptop with the minPCI card, or the wireless USB stick or a PCMCIA wireless card

  • Suggestion for setting up a good secured router including wireless routers

I've owned three routers LinkSys Wireless since May 2007: two WRT54G (V6 and V8) and my current V1 E3000.  All provided configuration options that can do if it is very difficult, if not impossible, for unauthorized access to my WiFi routers.

All changes must then your system is connected to one of the router's Ethernet ports and not through WiFi due to the modification point #3 of "General Suggestions.

All the elements in square brackets by "<>" are the titles of LinkSys Admin web pages or sections of web pages.  Don't forget to click "Save Settings" on a single web page before you go to another web page or your changes will be lost.

Please note that not all pages of the LinkSys Router Web Admin can use the titles of Section-page/website such as used in this suggestion.

Make sure you know MAC address and physics of your wireless adapter so that it will be necessary for the point #3 «Proposals WiFi»  Assuming that you have a Microsoft Windows-based system, use a 'Command Prompt' to issue command ' ipconfig/all' to determine the MAC address (aka physical) of your adapter WiFi wireless connected to a router.

After all the suggested changes, repeat the process to ensure that the changes have been saved.

    GENERALS.

    (1) < administration/mgmt=""> change the Admin password to one of your choice.

    (2) access to disable HTTP and HTTPS allow access.  After that it changed was recorded, you must reconnect to the router via note https://192.168.1.1 URL using httpS or http (without S) for a secure connection to the router admin web pages.

    (3) in Wireless disable access to the Admin web pages.  Must use the Ethernet port on the router.

    (4) in disable remote management AND disable UPnP - UPnP (a well-known Protocol should can route diversion if enabled).

    Specific suggestions of WiFi.

    (1) in turn off the SSID broadcast.  This will prevent the intruders 'driveby' to see the SSID of LinkSys Router.  Make sure that change you the default SSID of your choice.

    (2) in set your security level to the WPA or WPA2 (preferred WPA2).  Do NOT use WEP because it's encryption algorithm can be cracked in less than 5 seconds.  This will protect your transmissions between your system and the router.  The E series routers are supported both WPA/WPA2 depending on the client configuration.  My WRT54G routers would support only WPA or WPA2.

(3.) in Select AES, TKIP not as security consultants have recently discovered a flaw in TKIP encryption crackable.

4.) Select a passphrase that you and systems all allowed must be used to secure your router connections.

    (5) in the enable filtering MAC and "Allow only PC" whose MAC addresses are defined in the .  Both of these changes will require that you register addresses MAC and physical of all wireless clients that allow you to connect to your network router.  Failure to record the physical address/MAC system will refuse this system to access your network, even if they have the correct passphrase AES and SSID.

    1. disable the SSID broadcast is useless. Any Drivede will detect always immediately the access point because it should send signals of tag.

It is trivial to force a wireless client to reveal the SSID. Thus, any hacker will be able to learn the SSID almost immediately after it has detected the presence of your router.

In addition, to disable the SSID broadcast causes known problems of connection/reconnection with several wireless devices.

In addition, broadcast disable SSID drains the batteries in your wireless devices as they have to actively seek a connection to your SSID to know whether here or now.

As long as your wireless device is not connected to a wireless network, it will be continues to try to connect to your SSID at regular intervals. For example, if you have your iPhone set up to connect to your home network and you pull out your iPhone permanently tries to connect to your SSID, transmitting the requests of the association on a regular basis, actually bloating on your "hidden SSID' to anyone.

As transmitting something takes a lot more power then passively scanning and tuned radio waves, it drains the battery. If you need good battery life with your ever wireless devices connect them to a network with SSID broadcast disabled, or make sure that the device does not automatically connect to it!

Never disable the SSID broadcast, especially not for security reasons, because they do not offer any added safety or an advantage.

    2. the MAC address filtering does nothing more. MAC addresses are always in the unencrypted part of wireless packet. Any attacker will immediately learn the MAC addresses of your wireless devices. It is absolutely useless in the means of security and cause problems as the best for you. Do not bother about the filtering of MAC addresses. It does not prevent attacks on your network as it is easily circumvented.

Use WPA2 with AES and a password strong. That's all that is necessary to protect your wireless network.

The rest is a joke for any aggressor and bothers you much more than the alleged assailant. If an attacker was able to decipher your network WPA2/AES the SSID of your network and MAC addresses are a free byproduct you will get during the cracking process...
