"Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF)".
Separated from this thread.
My Samsung backup drive happily ran for 2 years every night by Cobian. Then in November 2014 he ceased to work because Cobian backup software could not create files. Understand, the difficulty being explained here. But there must be another problem because when I try to create a file on the rear disc manually using the new folder in Explorer I get the same catastrophic failure and the same error code "Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF)".
This has nothing to do with a dirty system drive so.
By the way I'm short W8 on a HP Pavilion...
Any ideas. I tried various fixes but you have not seen anyone with this problem recently. Many jobs are back in etc 2010.
Hi Richard,
Thanks for posting your query in Microsoft Community in detail. I imagine the inconvenience that you are experiencing right now. I will help you on that.
The issue you described can occur if the backup process detects that the system disk is corrupt.
What are the steps you did to solve the problem?
I suggest you try the steps mentioned below and check if it helps.
Method 1
Run the as System File Checker is a Windows utility that allows users to find corruptions in Windows system files and restore the damaged files.
Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files
Method 2
This problem may occur if there is a virus or malware present in the computer. Run Microsoft Safety Scanner because it can scan and remove viruses, spyware and other malicious software on the computer.
Note: The data files that are infected must be cleaned only by removing the file completely, which means that there is a risk of data loss.
Method 3
Run the disk check and check. Is there is no problem concerning the material, then it will try to correct this. Refer to the steps below:
a. click Start, type command prompt in the start search, right-click on command prompt and then click on Run as Administrator.
b. type the following command:
Chkdsk /r (there is a space between the k and /)
c. press on enter.
d. check the issue;
Note: when running chkdsk on the drive hard if bad sectors are found on the disk hard when chkdsk attempts to repair this area if all available on which data may be lost.
Method 4
Note: backup all your files and important files in an external storage is highly recommend device before performing any type of repair operating system or upgrade.

Get a message from catastrophic failure with error 0x8000FFFF on backup code
Original title: I get a message of catastrophic failure.
Error code 0x8000FFFF while trying to backup files every time. What should I do about it?
Hi granniewilsey,
This problem occurs because the backup process detects that the system drive is dirty.
Windows Vista backup always includes the system as part of the backup drive. If the system drive is dirty, the backup process skips the system drive, and no snapshot of the system drive is created. Therefore, the backup cannot locate a snapshot of the system drive later, and the error occurs.
To resolve this problem, run the disk check to fix the error on the system drive. To do this, follow the steps mentioned in the article below:
Error message when you try to perform a backup system on a Windows Vista-based computer: "catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF)".
http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/973558
Note: CHKDSK would attempt to recover bad sectors on the hard disk, in the course of this process there are chances of DATA loss from that particular area.

Problems starting Vista error: 0x8000FFFF catastrophic failure
original title: Vista startup problems
Hello
Recently, my girlfriend was hurry to get to a file of his laptop computer. When she turned on, Windows was configuration of updates. She got impatient and forced a stop during Setup (holding the power button until the laptop is turned off). It turned back on it and got to the vista screen where the bars were loading scroll. But the problem was that they just kept scrolling and loading not OS even after 10-15 minutes. She has made a force off and turned back on the laptop. This time a screen come telling him to start windows normally or do a startup repair. She did the repair but it did not work. I came and tried to do a system restore to an earlier date, but the error message "Catastrophic failure (0x8000FFFF)" came and said that he was unable to be repaired. The computer still works in safe mode. I'll have to reformat his computer? Or is there something else I can do?
She uses a Compaq laptop and running VISTA.
Follow these steps to try to solve your problems of boot.
Restore point:
http://www.howtogeek.com/HOWTO/Windows-Vista/using-Windows-Vista-system-restore/
Do Safe Mode system restore, if it is impossible to do in Normal Mode.
Try typing F8 at startup and in the list of Boot selections, select Mode safe using ARROW top to go there > and then press ENTER.
Try a restore of the system once, to choose a Restore Point prior to your problem...
Click Start > programs > Accessories > system tools > system restore > choose another time > next > etc.
http://www.windowsvistauserguide.com/system_restore.htm
Read the above for a very good graph shows how backward more than 5 days in the System Restore Points by checking the correct box.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If restore work not and you do not have a Vista DVD from Microsoft, do a repair disc to do a Startup Repair:
Download the ISO on the link provided and make a record of repair time it starts.
Go to your Bios/Setup, or the Boot Menu at startup and change the Boot order to make the DVD/CD drive 1st in the boot order, then reboot with the disk in the drive.
At the startup/power on you should see at the bottom of the screen either F2 or DELETE, go to Setup/Bios or F12 for the Boot Menu.
When you have changed that, insert the Bootable disk you did in the drive and reboot.
Link above shows what the process looks like and a manual, it load the repair options.
NeoSmart containing the content of the Windows Vista DVD 'Recovery Centre', as we refer to him. It cannot be used to install or reinstall Windows Vista, and is just a Windows PE interface to recovering your PC. Technically, we could re-create this installation with downloadable media media freely from Microsoft (namely the Microsoft WAIK, several gigabyte download); but it is pretty darn decent of Microsoft to present Windows users who might not be able to create such a thing on their own.
Read all the info on the website on how to create and use:
ISO Burner:http://www.snapfiles.com/get/active-isoburner.html
It's a very good Vista startup repair disk.
You can do a system restart tool, system, etc it restore.
It is NOT a disc of resettlement.
Hi GosuSheep,
Follow the methods and check them off below if it solves the problem.
Method 1:
Scan the file system (CFS) auditor. This command will launch immediately the Windows File Protection service to scan all protected files and verify their integrity, replace all the files with which it detects a problem.
Link, please refer to: how to use the System File Checker tool to fix the system files missing or corrupted on Windows Vista or Windows 7: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929833
Method 2:
Run the disk check in Windows Explorer
a. double-click my computer and then click on the system drive.
b. click on properties, then Tools.
c. sous-verification of errors, click check now. A dialog box that shows the check disk options is displayed.
d. Click to select the automatically fix file system errors check box and then click Start.
e. If you receive the following message appears, click schedule disk check:
Windows vista error - catastrophic failure - error occurred during automatic backup of files
- Windows vista service pack 2
- error 0x8000FFFF catastrophic failure code
- update browser GOOGLE chrome
- Run the disk check, have also partioned disks (supplied with the new laptop), but still keep on this error
SOLUTION:
The solution to the problem, I met is the following:
Step 1: RESTART your computer, press F8
Step 2: select the first OPTION (depending on the manufacturer of your computer, it may be first or second, and so on...)
The option is: fix my (the) computer
Step 4: It will load the same in SafeMode (just an example), select your OWN USER NAME (though more are available), log in as an ADMINISTRATOR (if you are the one)
Step 5: It will change into a small window asking you connect by using the command prompt: check this option (this may vary according to manufacturing, but it should be there)
Step 6: Now when you log in you should see X:\Windows\System32 >
Step 7: Change of disk C, D or E (essentially select your disk where the OS is installed)
NOTE: If NO leave are present select your ONE and ONLY by CAR.
If left are, for example: D and E (D contains BONES, E contains - your stuff)
Select drive with OS, i.e. D drive
Step 8: After your decision to step 7, it would look like
X:\Windows\System32\C:
Step 9: The result would now be C:\ >
SO BASICALLY WE ARE ACCESSING THE HDD FROM OUTSIDE
Step 10: Type Chkdsk/r/f
Step 11: wait for the results
The first 3 steps will be complete as soon as POSSIBLE, the 4th and 5th stage will TAKE ABOUT 120 minutes (variable, based on the hard drive, the computer specifications and especially your processor)
The result should tell you more about the DEFECTIVE AREAS, indexing ERRORS and similar stuff, and also they could be repaired.
When finished: TUPE OUTPUT
At the end of OUTPUT
and REBOOT
step 12: now even ONCE, go to the BACK UP CENTER, launch a NEW BACK UP, it should work :)
