I'm not quite sure what you mean by 2 small bars of silver, but the reader of my laptop s contains two metals (runners, railway).
This is normal and these pieces are important to ensure that the drive can eject properly and could remain in a good position.
Still, you will hear a short click Open and close the drive.So I guess it's ok.

I have a laptop Toshiba Satellite A300 - 1 MM and I have a problem with the optical drive (Mat * un DVD Ram Uj880as):
DVD - RAM plateau sometimes refuse to open. The LED lights up briefly, but still nothing. Windows recognize the drive but the plateau of refuses to open. Eject commands the position of work and management of the computer-> disk management will not work. I can open the tray manually but the optical drive will not read any cd/dvd. No error code in return.
When that happens it cause peaks of high utilization of the processor (from 60 to 100%) in the System Idle Process. Just stop and restart it solve. After that, the laptop also runs fine and the optical drive.
I replaced Win7 32-bit with a 64-bit version and the problem persist.

My CD/DVD drive will not appear in the Device Manager, but present in the BIOS.
DevCon didn't find it. It will not open even if I don't get to Device Manager and check for changes to the system. I deleted the registry entries upper and lower limit. Any other suggestions? I am running Windows Vista 64-bit with all maintenance applied. My computer has two DVD RW drives. When I push the eject button physical on the drive, the tray opens for a while and then quits. If I select "eject" on the graphic display (Windows Explorer), the behavior is the same - the tray opens for a while and then quits.
Here's the new readers. I just replaced them, since the old disks had the same problem, and I assumed the old disks were somewhat defective.
If I just start the update of the BIOS, the problem goes away - I push the physical eject button, and the drawer opens and stays that way. For this reason, I guess that the problem is not the faulty discs, but something that makes Windows.

Satellite L350 - CD/DVD drive does not open
I have a new laptop, less than a month, but his habit of CD/DVD tray open by pressing eject button. Eject-do a right-click on its icon does not open it no more.

I can only confirm what writes Akuma. You need to replace the CD/DVD drive and you get a new from an authorized service provider. If your laptop is under warranty you can get a new one for free.
I had the same problem a few months ago. EPA has replaced the CD/DVD drive in a few days and I come back my laptop. Very fast service and the technicians are friendly. :)

I tried regedit suggestions. UpperFilter deleted, no lower filter exists.
In addition to the above on the excellent advice, cdrom.sys is not corrupt.

DVD drive does not open. What can I do?
Yesterday, the DVD drive in my Dell laptop, Inspiron, Windows Vista has worked very well. This morning, the drive does not open when I pressed the eject button, although the indicator flashed several times. Dell support site mentions try "eject feature in Windows", but I can't find information about this.

Toshiba cd/dvd drive will not read or eject or anything like that!
Cd/dvd driver for my Toshiba laptop will not work. It lasted about a year, then he became gradually sporadic to read/write or ejection and by last winter, he stopped all together. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers for it, and in Device Manager, it says that the device is functioning normally; every once in a blue moon it will suddenly eject, but then if you put something in nothing happens, even not with the original disks. With the repair utility, it says something like unreadable media, at best. I'm a little confused as to what is happening here, so, what steps should I take to verify if it is indeed the drive disc or something in the software?
