Cleaning/make space on my windows 7 & 8 hardrives.

I can defragment recovery D section (or any other for that matter) on windows 7 & 8?  on both computers, there is little or no space left. Whether or not, can I also backup my computers on cloud or Sky drive.  I had 3 external hard drives up to Sandy hit.  I don't have that 1 I know works for sure, but it is full that I find it hard to believe that she has 1 TB of storage, which brings me to my next question how to go on display all stored on it & what I can safely remove (I usually find later I needed) & Finally on 2 other external drives , I'm not sure that they were damaged by the floods (but believe it or not I'm still clean, even pretty sure I lost the power cords for).  Also all of my SD cards & jump readers have been affected by the flooding, is there a way to clean the connections to try and recover the data I had on them?  Many had photo & videos that have been completely lost in their printed report, recovering tem are extremely important as well as try to get the info of invoices etc. that were on these discs.

P.S. I'm not very good w / these "stupid electronic" that we cannot live without this century even though I own a 7, 8 touchscreen laptop & I - Pad which apple was kind enough to replace when they heard about my other having been lost in the storm! If only and others some co. software could have been as amiable as 99% of my discs have been washed clean of the info stamped on them! Hoping I don't have too many questions at a time!

Thank you tech savvy!

Hi Lisa,

As you mentioned that you have very less space on your computer I suggest you to transfer or move the files or data on an external drive.

Copy or move files and folders

http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-CA/Windows-8/copy-move-files

You can use Disk Cleanup to reduce the number of unnecessary files on your drives, which can help your PC run faster. It can remove temporary files and system files, empty the trash and remove a variety of other items that you might need is no longer.

Delete files using disk cleanup

http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-CA/Windows/delete-files-using-disk-cleanup#delete-files-using-disk-cleanup=Windows-8

Note: to avoid any data loss, we strongly recommend to back up your files and settings on a disk external before resetting, refreshing, upgrade, or reinstallation of Windows or deleting files.

Apart from that you can also delete temporary files from your computer. Follow the steps below.

  1. Press the Windows key + Q key.
  2. In the search box present in the upper corner of the side right, type %temp% .
  3. Click on the result of the search, select all files and delete it.

For the device which you say who has been affected by the floods, I suggest for to connect you to your computer and check if you are able to view these files.

I hope this helps. Please write us if you have problems with Windows.

I am trying to install Windows 7 on Vista laptop for my daughter.

The hard disk is partitioned into a C drive:

    79.6 GB used

    69.3 GB free

and the D drive is partitioned as

    24.6 MB used

    6.38 MB of free space

When I try to upgrade I get the following error

There is not enough free space on the D: partition. A total of 15 megabytes of free space is required.

When I look at the drive D with Windows Explorer it shows only 1 file called Bootsect.bak and he is 8 KB.

What occupies the rest of the space?

How can I enlarge Partition D so that I can install Windows 7?

    Rex

Do not install Windows 7 on the D: drive - which is the recovery disk and is not big enough for Windows 7. It is best if you keep the D: drive is - don't mess with it unless it is intended to prevent the installation of Windows 7. Restore the disk files should be hidden if you do not see them.

Install Windows 7 on drive C:. Sometimes, the program made the mistake to recommend the D: drive. Your C: drive drive has sufficient space for the installation of Windows 7, but if you make a room upgrade you may need to free up space.

Windows 7 requires about 20 GB of free space for installation with a clean install, and even more if you make a way to upgrade. If you have a lot of music and/or videos you can transfer it to an external storage device during the upgrade.

  • Can I use my Windows 7 Edition recovery disks Home Premium for a clean install on my old Windows XP computer?

Hello world!  I hope someone can help.

Can I use my Windows 7 Edition recovery disks Home Premium for a clean install on my old Windows XP computer?

If this is a recovery from a different computer disk, you are unable to do so.

In addition, if you were to format the computer, you will need to have a way to reinstall a copy of Windows with a genuine license.

The best option if you need Windows 7 Home Premium is to buy a genuine license then you can make a custom (new installation).

  • How have the guest OS disk cleaning disc space come on for the host operating system hard drive?

    People,

Hello. I use VM Player 3. The OS is Windows 7. Guset OS is Windows Server 2003.

Because the host OS Windows 7 C drive is nearly full, I need disk cleanup for drive space in Guset OS Windows Server 2003.

Guest OS Windows Server 2003 VM hard drive parameters:

    Size current 92.5 GB,

    Maximum size of 150 GB.

I use Disk Cleanup tool to clean C:\Document and Settings\Temp\ and temporary Internet Files\ administrator to get 32 GB of disk space. Now my computer in Windows Server 2003:

    Used space: 59.2 GB

    86.2 GB of free space

    145GB total space

But when I check again Windows Server 2003 VM hard drive settings, its current size is 92.5 GB and is not afraid to 59.2 GB after cleaning. Host operating system Windows 7 disc does not come more disk space after cleaning.

My Player VM VM-> settings is not a function of "Shrink" and the program does not "vmware - vdiskmanager.exe" file to run the function of 'shrink '.

    My question is:

How to get the approximately 32 GB (92, 5-59, 2 GB) of disk space happen on Windows Server 2003 VM settings and drive hard host operating system Windows 7?

    Thank you.

    People,

Hello. VMware Tools has tab Shrink to reduce the virtual disk. But the free disk space hard host should be larger that the size of the virtual disk you are reduced to shrink.

The problem is solved by myself. Thank you.

    Hello by

The entire display is confusing somehow. I have to say that you must tell us which model of laptop you have exactly.
Anyway, here, many made to better understand:
-New notebook models are supplied without recovery Toshiba DVD
-Recovery image is saved in the folder called HDDRecovery on the second partition and partition hidden with recovery image doesn't exist
-It is recommended to create own recovery and therefor DVD, Toshiba has designed little tool called "Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator"
-You can start "Toshiba Recovery Disc Creator", using the shortcut placed on the desktop (factory State)

So to help you please let us know what model of laptop do, you must, folder HDDRecovery is on second partition available and still using the factory settings?

  • 127 GB of disk space required for Windows XP?

I use the copy of XP comes with my computer 10 years ago.  I upgraded to SP 3.  XP is now 127 GB of my 142 GB disck drive.  I think it should be less than 70 GB.  How can I reduce the space occupied by Windows?

    Thank you!

The brief flash was probably because you run msizap by double-clicking to open a command prompt window instead and it works there.

This is probably the best at this time for you to take the computer to a local store.  I suggest does not go to a place geeksquad or type BigBoxStoreUSA, but you probably right that who take you to reinstall Windows.  Don't forget to tell them to back up your data files (photos, documents, music, etc.) first.

Unless the Office was preinstalled on the computer when you bought it (and the store chooses to use the method of 'back to the conditions of the factory'), you must reinstall Office.  You also need to reinstall other applications that are now on the computer.  You need original installation media and product keys.  Ask the shop to extract the product keys for your various applications before reinstalling Windows.

    Good luck.

How to make a reformat online Windows XP?

You cannot reformat the drive or the Partition of Windows XP while XP is running. To reformat the XP partition, you will need to insert the Windows XP installation CD and boot from the CD. One of the installation option is delete and reformat a partition.

Warning: Reformatting will result in the loss of all your data files (Documents, Photos, music, etc.) and you also need to reinstall XP because it will be removed after reformatting.

Now look, you will see new Contact button group.
