  The product key is used because 'you' use it. In other words it has already been activated once and the number of product key appears on the activation of Microsoft database. This isn't a problem, instead of activate over the internet, a simple call to the activation of Microsoft, line will solve the problem.   I have a Compaq Presario F730 Notebook PC. I bought it two years ago. Today, when I got home I got a message on my screen that said that I needed to get my vista product key. I entered and it notified me that my key was already in use. I went to the Microsoft site and basically, he told me that I had to check my information produced by phone. After being transferred to a technician, told me that Compaq had bought the license to put vista on my computer and it would have to be solved on end of Compaq. You might be better just try calling at different times of the day to find one of the periods of time during the day when the queue of the call is low.

  Recently restored by laptop to the factory setting and did successfully. But now it says my product key is already in use and so my windows is not genuine.

  I checked similar problems but the activation of the phone doesn't seem to be an option as the country where I live I (Iran) is not specified.

  The software has been installed on another computer?  OEM licenses are not transferable.

  Retail licenses can be installed on another computer, but must be uninstalled from another computer.

  Judging by your post, it seems that Microsoft had technical problems when you tried to activate your copy of Vista by phone. Have you tried phoning the line Activation again?

  The normal procedure is that if the activation fails through the automated system, the call is transferred to a real person. It is the only available option if you get the error 'use existing product key'.

  I can only suggest that you try again the activation by phone and see what happens.

  I see what is the problem.

  You have a corrupted Licnsing store-

  Please try the steps below to re-create the store with the correct data.

  (1) open an Internet browser window.
  (2) type: %windir%\system32 in the browser's address bar.
  (3) find the CMD.exe file
  (4) make a right click on CMD.exe and select "Run as Administrator"
  (5) type: net stop slsvc (it may ask you if you're sure, select Yes)
  (6) type: cd %windir%\ServiceProfiles\NetworkService\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\SoftwareLicensing
  (7) type: Rename tokens.bar tokens.dat
  (8) type: cd %windir%\system32
  (9) type: net start slsvc
  (10) type: cscript slmgr.vbs - FLIR (it may take time for this will be complete, please be patient)
  (11) restart your computer twice.

  You may need to enter your COA key and activate it.
  Once complete, run another report MGADiag and post back with the results

  Yep - the key is already in use, from your previous installation.
  What material update you? What Windows license type you have (OEM/retail)?

  Recently, I bought a computer from a big brand. I installed a legitimate copy of Windows Vista Edition Family Premium on it which came with my dads computer, also bought the same brand. The installed fine print, on more than one occasion and has been also validated successfully on each installation. The same disc has been used before that to install and activate a copy of Windows on my dads computer.

  However, my computer broke and after much hassl, he was returned to the company and I am waiting for a refund. I formatted the computer off until it is, including the installed copy of Vista.

  Now, I bought a new computer and installed the same copy of Vista on it. Once again no problems with installation.

  When I came to activate Windows online I met with the message that the product key is already in use. Of searching this forum I found that I was able to activate the copy by phone and so called, followed the instructions and was told that I could not activate this copy that was only to use a computer.

  How can I now go to the activation of the copy that I have on my new computer? If I was told it correctly and it can be installed on a computer, then how is it that a second facility was made and activated on my old and now returned computer?

  I understand that after getting your equipment repaired, you cannot activate Windows 8.

  As the ID of the product gets changed every time the internal components of the machine are modified and when you try to activate Windows it identifies it as a machine to new or different.

  Activate manually.

  To activate manually, go to start, search, and type in slui 4 enter.  Enter your country and press Next.  You will be on a screen with a phone number and a bunch of codes below.  Dial the number and browse automatic guests until you get to a human being.  Have your handy product code because it will be asked.  Explain the situation, but it's the same PC and only installed on this PC.  They should give you a code to enter on this screen to activate Vista.

  This problem occurs because you changed the hard drive. When a change is made in the hard disk of the windows vista system will ask you to activate.

  To activate Windows Vista by using the automated telephone system, follow these steps:
