I know that it is not the router because I plugged the cable into my laptop running 7 and it works fine.   Went into my bios as suggested to check the boot order - and, Yes, I got HDD1 as first boot then CD - but then I remembered something I had seen earlier on my computer - it was on the list the HD which had my system like HDD0 files - so, I checked and there it was - listed option HDD0 so I changed HDD1 of HDD0 and was able to boot my computer without the disk system.  Hope this helps someone else with the same prob.
