Connect 2 ESXi hosts to array SAS MD3220

I have two R620s who go to the server as a host for the VM for several web servers (in a Windows NETWORK load balancing) and two other R620s which will be considered as physical database servers (in a Failover Cluster) and have to apply to a single Bay MD3220 SAS. The DB cluster will host the databases shared on a virtual disk and a data store shared on another virtual drive on the Bay. ESXi hosts will store their vmx/vmdk files elsewhere on the Board.

I'm still waiting for delivery of the second DB server, but in the meantime, I installed the first and he speaks with success to the table - I run MDSM on that server and the server is successfully connected to DB and filestore volumes. guess I'm having a little problem with the second server.

I installed ESXi on both VM hosts. I guess the next step is to save in MDSM, but MDSM is not automatically host port identifiers as assigned. Does?

My next guess would be to identify manually port host identifiers, but how can I determine what are their respective IDs? I couldn't see anything obvious in the BIOS.

I have currently two independent hosts to VM with ESXi installed v5.1 - I have not created a VM vCenter again because the host does not have access to the storage Bay (!), so I can pair together for HA hosts, etc. As a broader question, given what I want to achieve, how should I be going to this topic?

Indeed, you will need to register the VMware hosts in MDSM yourself. There is no agent to have a VMware host register automatically on the SAN (at the regular difference in Windows and linux).

You may be able to find the WWN of the HBA SAS in the SAS controller bios.

The only other way I know not to register the correct WWN with the server is intrusive, but not so hard:

-Stop your Windows (cluster SQL) servers

-Stop the VMware servers

-power of the MD3220 downwards

-power up the MD3220

-power up to one of the servers Windows (one that has MDSM on it)

-power up the VMware Server 1

In MDSM, you can now save this first VMware Server.

Turn on the other 2 servers and register the 2nd VMware Server.

I found that only shutting down 1 VMware server is not erase the memory of the MD whose WWNS are connected and there is no way to find which ports you enter the WWN in question.

  • How to connect two ESXi hosts with a connection to 1Gbps via ADJUSTABLE and the transfer of files between them?

    Dear community,

Like many of you, I am facing the problem of executing an effective backup of VMs. unfortunately I can't use standard methods: my servers are rented from the root servers and therefore haver some limits. Their main NIC is connected to the Internet on the speed of 100 MB. It's very slow, if I try to VM backup via this connection images. In addition, backup sessions running through the shared management interface are affecting the production of virtual machine performance.

To resolve this problem, I ordered an additional network card to each server and asked the data center to connect my themwith a physical link (crossover cable). OK, between my servers 1Gbit link is established, but how do you use now?

-I can not move the management interface of these cards, because they have no connection to the internet.

-I can't use among the guest computers because the guest computer is unable to access the files on disk on the host computer.

So, I've exhausted all my ideas. Maybe someone knows the trick that will let me use 1 GB link between two machines of ESXi to mutually backup disks of virtual machines from one host to another.

Thanks in advance for your ideas.

Create a vSwitch on each host and set the NETWORK adapter that you will use with the x-over cable.

Create a portgroup Console of service on each vSwitch and assign it an IP address on the same subnet for each server (router/gateway address does not necessary) for example 192.168.0.1 and 192.168.0.2 on each host.

Connect the cables between the server network cards.

You should have a link between two service consoles. I now download and deploy the device of the vMA, on the two hosts for the fault tolerance. Write a script on the VMAs on each host to a-i vmkfstools from one host to another and vice versa.

If you have virtual machines registered pointing these VMDK on both hosts, then have your scripts remove the VMDK and re - the clone using vmfkstools whenever you back up, you should have a backup solution of rudimentary virtual machine (full copy) in place.

Now you do not miss the service console?

    Good luck

  • How to change the config of vCenter Server Appliance (5.5) ESXi host vm? [Solved]

I want to enable (set to true) memoryHotAddEnabled and cpuHotAddEnabled on the vCenter Server Appliance.

I can't the powerCLI user because he needs a vCenter Server Appliance to connect to (right?) and to allow HotAdd of the virtual machine must be turned off.

For anyone wondering, the best way to do this is to connect the ESXi host via vSphere Client, turn off the VM vCenter and update the configuration in this way.

  • Unable to connect to esxi using the vsphere client

    Hello friends,

    I need a little help.

a 2 5.0 esxi host and a vcenter than VM.

My laboratory worked well for days, but all of a sudden do not know why I am not able to connect to ESXi hosts with vSphere Client.

Error: The request failed because the remote server has taken too long to respond.

Call "ServiceInstance.RetrieveContent" to "ServiceInstance' server '192.168.1.101' object failed.

Yes, I am able to connect to vCenter server, when it is connected to vCenter and open the console of the virtual computer, nothing shows up, it's a black screen, as if the virtual machine is turned off. It is with all the virtual machines on both hosts.

    1. I thought that it might have to do something with vCenter and I tried connecting to Host individually which I wasn't able to.

After completing a few KBs on vmware and some articles, I checked the status of the firewall on both hosts. (attached screenshot)

    8-7-2013 2-11-16 AM.png

Checked if my computer can talk to esxi host on port 80, 443, 902. all ports are accessible.

Disabled the Symantec endpoint protection and checked. no positive results.

Finally, I tried the ESXi web navigation browser host http://ESXi-IP-address which redirects me to HTTPS connection with Certificate error, when I continue with the cert error, loading of the URL guard and the host page doesn't appear as it should.

This questions are on both hosts. :-(

You guys can point me in the right direction to solve this problem.

    Thank you.

    Finally things started working now.

The problem was with the configuration of the workstation's NETWORK adapter.

The link on the NETWORK adapter speed was set to Auto negotiate (default), but the speed was detected as 100 Mbps instead of 1 Gbps and MTU has been set at 9014 which I defined manually long back.

Things use to operate in this configuration that I have configured hosts with MTU 9000 and cisco SMB switch default Jumbo.

the LinkSpeed of 100 Mbps is bugging me, after changing to 1 Gbps (manual setting) the card NETWORK has deactivated, and it reminded me to switch!

So I put the LinkSpeed Auto negotiation, MTU 9014, stop the two hosts, restart the switch. restarted my computer.

Since it uses for things were in a normal state.

Even the question of the console (black screen) disappeared. :-)

  • VIServer - connect to an ESXi host

We have virtualized just the server that runs our vCenter services.  Now, we found that we would like to increase the number of processors available on the virtual computer.  Unfortunately, hot CPU is not activated on the VM, then we are stuck in the dillema that need vCenter to change the settings on the virtual machine, but not being able to change the settings when the virtual machine is running.

We try to use PowerCLI to achieve this.  If I understand correctly, we should be able to connect directly to the ESXi host to change the settings of the virtual machine while it is turned off.  However, I was unable to establish a connection to the host using Connect-VIServer.  When I try the following:

    SE connect-VIServer esxihost.domain.com - root - password rootpass user

I get an error message can not complete the connection due to an incorrect user name or password.  I am able to connect to our vCenter very well using Connect-VIServer, but it serves me in my scenario.

I noticed that Connect-VIServer only supports HTTP and HTTPS, but our ESXi hosts only run SSH.  It is possible to connect to a host without vCenter ESXi running?

    Oh ffs... too bad.

All our hosts use the same password with the exception of a handful that are different (for some reason that no one can remember).

Guess which include this particular host is in?

    Kill me...

  • ESXi host does not have the full connection due to an incorrect user name or password.

    Hello

I need to provide the username and password while reconnecting Esxi host, but with the lines below, I can't succeed. Help, please.

    Game-VMHost-connected state - VMHost 10.50.56.151,10.50.56.65,10.50.56.107,10.50.56.168 | Game-VMHostAuthentication - root username - password "trustno1" - $false JoinDomain

Thanks LucD., however, I tested is the only way to connect back the vmhost to vcenter. I have not found any cmdlet.

  • vSphere client using the name Netbios on ESXi host does not connect using the credentials of a Windows session

I have 3 ESXi 5.5 hosts, all connected to a single server vCenter, where we try to authenticate directly to the host by using the windows logon credentials. I have installation of the Administrators group of ESX and filled with the admin accounts that I want to be able to authenticate to the host. The Netbios name of the domain is tstdomain (for example) where the domain name is tstdomain.com. If I connect directly to a host and check the checkbox 'Use Windows Session Credentials', the vSphere client will default by using the Netbios name of tstdomain\adminusername and the connection will fail indicating that the username and/or password is incorrect. If I enter the domain name of tstdomain.com\adminusername, I am able to connect to the host without error.

Does anyone know how get past that this matter have the vSphere client uses the domain name or to use the Netbios name and connect with the credentials to active directory? I looked by editing the file/etc/hosts and checked that the SPN of the host is correct in active directory with the command hostname setspn - l, with no luck on one. I also tried to change the field of research for the Netbios name of tstdomain rather than the tstdomain.com domain name, also did not work.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions on how to correct the problem.

Seems that this issue was due to a slow network and the connection timeout when you try to talk to the domain controller. I am able to connect with windows creds now, but the connection is very slow. I increased the default period of 30 to 60 seconds to help work around the problem.

  • Location of 'Events' seen in vSphere connected to ESXi 4.1 host?

    Hello

When we open vSphere client to connect to a server ESXi host, there is the 'Events' tab shown at the host level.  I would like to know how to remove this log, please.

I found this article (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1021801), but it doesn't answer my question.  I had deleted these files "message * ' and ' spend-*" files (files whose number names), but that's not all.

I would appreciate if someone could tell me how to remove the old logs there.

    gallycool wrote:

    Hello

    Please check the under rental.

    / var/run/log

It is the location where the old logs are stored.

If the partition scratch has temp location then newspapers will be eliminated with a reboot of the host.

If newspapers are in the temporary location, then the former location of newspapers is/temp/scratch

If the scratch location is configured on a data store location, then the location of old newspapers is as below

    / var/run/log

Please do not delete the present remove only logs logs rotated.

Please do a ls - ltrh you can get the date and time of creation of the newspaper and also the size of the journal of.

Please let me know if you need additional information.

    Thank you

    Sam

There is no directory called "journal" under/var/run/in my ESXi server.

The partition scratch is in the default location.

I restarted the ESXi server and saw the former event logs have disappeared.  So apparently old newspapers of the events in this log "Events" can only be removed by rebooting.

  • Failed to connect to client host vsphere and Vcenter also esxi.

    Hi all

I am trying to connect to the ESXi 5 of vsphere client host. I get the error message:

vSphere client cannot connect to < ip > an unknown connection error has occurred. (The request has failed because the remote server has taken too long to respond. (L'opération a expirer)).

and of VCENTR I am trying to add this host. I get the error. Of"request timed out".

I can connect to the shell of ESXi and restart the vpxa services and spend. I can ping to esi IP host. but just cannot connect to it.

earlier, he the host showed as disconnected in Vcenter. I tried to plug it failed. so I took it off I think can re add back. It did not work.

I can just connect to client as esx host.

    kindly advice.

    Thank you

    Hello

I am able to connect now.

I noticed as I said previously, unable to connect to the localhost error when running esxcli. Unable to connect using the vsphere client. Unable to connect using VCenter.

So I started to dig that's wrong with the OS esxi. and began running a few commands information esxcfg etc file system use of space, inode inconsistency, a few other commands such vdh, df to check the file system.  . and but has not changed anything. network configuration is correct.

in these I run services.sh reboot, restart vpxa, pass reboot, restart host, check the logs, vmkernel, vpxa newspapers spend., check the date and time of the host.  I couldnot Firewall check since esxcli did not work. I haven't checked listed above step on the SSO.

If you type esx and double tab, you will see many orders. I started testing on these orders.  so esxcli was a single command I tried later. It worked all of a sudden.

Once esxcli has started working, I checked vsphere client to connect to esx host that it worked. then I was able to connect in Vcenter also.

    Thank you for your support

  • 5.5 ESXi host is not able to connect to the network

I installed ESXi5.5 U2. But the ESXi host grab an IP address from the DHCP server. I tried givind static IP of my office network, but still unable to connect to the network. I checked the CLI, the vmnico of the adapter is in place. Why the machine does not have an IP address?

I started this machine from the network (available in the bios settings) and observed if an IP address is required. Then, I started the server from the hard drive. Surprisingly, it took an IP and I could connect via the network.

After that, I plugged this NETWORK adapter to a different location on the same server. I found the same problem (do not take IP). But when once again, I did the "Network Boot" thing, it took an IP address and now it works fine.

    What is average?

Apparently, my problem is solved, but I still don't know the reason.

  • Connection usb to esxi host and copy vmdk

    Hello

I'm trying to migrate a vSphere cluster to another machines.  There is no network connectivity between the 2, so I intend to copy the files vmdk and vmx more via USB directly connected to the host for thoroughput max.  Anyone tried this?  I looked in the documentation and online, and I see that the only supported file systems FAT32 and ext3.  For a 40 GB virtual computer, can I use an ext3 formatted USB key, copy locally and then USB attach themselves to a host on the new cluster and copy?  Anyone see any problems with this?  We are doing this process via a USB port connected to a position of the user and SCPing between the host and the USB port on the network.  I think that cutting the transfer network will speed up the process, currently a 40-50 GB VM takes about 3 hours

    Hello

I understand that you can read in what she argued, however...

If there is a KB article while this does not mean that it is supported, it simply means that it is possible and you might be able to use it if the need is high enough. For example, in case of problems you can risk some stability/performance and fix the most urgent problem at hand, as a critical VM that was on a LUN which disappeared earlier that day there so that you only restore backup on a USB drive.

Also note the supplement "additional note" at the bottom of the KB that you are facing

    Quote (my highlighting):

    More information

The USB key must be a minimum of 4 GB in size. This procedure is not recommended for basic file transfers.

This procedure includes steps on disabling the intercom USB host function. Then earlier in the article that they use the same feature to connect the USB drive to the guest.

If this isn't everything, they use the DCUI for mode of tech support that their link in an article KB1017910 to using the console is already a bit dodgy on a production host. About using the console for day-to-day operations is a no No

Another quote, this time from this KB article, underscores once again with me.

    Tech Support Mode

Tech Support Mode (TSM) provides a command line interface that can be used by the Administrator to troubleshoot and correct abnormal conditionson hosts VMware ESXi. TSM is accessible in two ways:

    • Connecting directly to the ESXi Server console.
    • Remote SSH connection.

Further down in this article, it is pointed out again that it is for support only, I would say is something different as 'supported environment.

It does not mean that you can not and never use should the DCUI, but be careful.

Back on the focus to what you're trying to do.

If your USB drive is broken, you now have a hypervisor that attempts to mount it to the level of the hypervisor, which, in itself, can cause downtime at the level of the hypervisor risks of release for ALL your guests. USB transfer at least maintains these problems located in the virtual machine, it is attached to.

Besides that... the only system files that you can mount is VFAT, so you can't even put files there that are larger than 2 GB (or 4 GB) in size.

File systems ext2/ext3/ext4 that none of those who are supported, VFAT only for your external USB drive.

Yes there are ways around the VFAT file size limit too, but you're just jumping through the next pole, and if something's not going then your users is satisfied by the retoric "but backups are faster".

  • Interruption of the connection to the host ESXi 5.1

I did some tests on one of our hosts in preparation for the essential moving to Essentials more when I noticed that most of the vmnic reported only 100 MB Full Duplex connection speeds.  We have a Dell R515 with 2 cards Broadcom NetXtreme II BCM 5709, all set to auto negotiate, so I thought I'd try and force one vmnic to communicate to 1000Mb Full Duplex.  This had quite disastrous consequences resulting in a lack of connectivity to the host.  VCentre host is reported as Disconncted and if I try to connect directly to the host I get a type error "unable to connect".

Fortunately the virtual machine is still ongoing so I just need to get that host online.  SSH is turned off so I can't chew on the host, if I don't have physical access to it if necessary.

The management network is running on vmnic8, which is embedded Broadcom BCM5716, while I just changed vmnic6 on one of the Broadcom BCM5709 map, then why I lose o management network connection, I'm a little confused, any help appreciated.

    See you soon

    Dean

Just follow the steps described in the section "setting the speed and duplex of the NIC in ESX/ESXi host at the service console. In step 1, you will find links to find out how to enable Shell access. Basically you log in to the DCUI to allow Shell access in the "Troubleshooting Options" menu and press ALT - F1 to switch to the console. After the connection, use esxcli nic network list for an overview of installed vmnic network nic esxcli get vmnic8-n to display the settings vmnic8 and esxcli network nic address-n vmnic8-a to set the speed and duplex automatic. For more information about the command, see http://pubs.vmware.com/vsphere-50/index.jsp#com.vmware.vcli.ref.doc_50/esxcli_network.html

  • A procedure for restart underlying SAN connected to 5 ESXi hosts?

    Hello

We get the warning of the underlying SAN connected to ESXi 5 hosts.  Consultant suggests restarting the SAN and the FC Switch.

We would like to know is there, any measure must be made on the hosts ESXi connected to the San to restart will not affect the ESXi host and VM?  Such as: Stop all VMs,... etc.

    Your opinion is requested.

    Thank you

I would say, put the army in maintenance mode and perform a restart of the SAN and CF.

Once the window over, make sure that the host does not see the paths of the dead and exit the host from maintenance mode.

  • ESXi host have not of virtual machines when connected through vCenter

    Hi all

I am facing a problem with 1 ESXi hosts. All other hosts are working properly.

All hosts are managed by vCenter 5.1 VM. When I select this problematic host in vCenter and click on the virtual computers tab, it does not display anything other than a blank page. Then, it throws an error saying that the object has been deleted or has not completely created. The screenshot of the error popup is attached.

However, if I connect directly to the host through the VI client, it does not throw the error and I can see the virtual machines it. If I have vmotion the vms during this host, I do not see these virtual machines via vcenter but I connect directly to the host and I can see the virtual machines. They work very well.

What could be the cause of this problem.

    Thank you

    AG

I would try restart the management agent on the host troubled or removing of vCenter and time.

  • ESXi host does not connect more after a restart of the service LogInsight

    Hello

I put several (5.1 U1) ESXi to use the newly installed LogInsight. they sent him their event properly. I had to restart the log service Insight. After the reboot, the hosts stopped sending events. the vcenter continued, however.

I had to reload the syslog on the hosts to send their event to the perspicacity of newspaper.

    esxcli system syslog reload

any idea? I guess that's not normal behavior

    Thank you

    Eric

Hi Eric, this is unfortunately expected behavior. What you are experiencing is a bug in ESXi. More information is available in the Guide to installation/Admin under the troubleshooting log Insight section or at the following article: http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2003127.

ESXi newspapers stop arriving at the Insight Journal

After you restart the log service Insight, ESXi hosts syslog messages stop arriving at the Insight Journal.

    Problem

In Insight Journal configuration changes require that you restart the log Insight service. After the restart, syslog RSS of ESXi are no longer available.

    Cause

Some versions of ESXi stop balls sending if connectivity to the remote syslog listener is stopped, even for a short moment. This problem affects the following versions of ESXi, depending on the communication protocol used.
