convert the eager Zerod thick disk

I have shut down my db with disks FT migrated to another host server.

Error message: cannot open (thin/TBZ disks cannot be opened in multiwriter mode.).

This migration removed the formatting of the disk based on what I read in this article (http://kb.vmware.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?language=en_US & cmd = displayKC & externalId = 1033570) and I'm unable to turn on. Checked this and it looks like it was the case:

  • If the virtual disk VMDK is a Thin, convert the eager Zerod drive of the thickness using the vmkfstools --inflatedisk command. For example:

    vmkfstools --inflatedisk /vmfs/volumes/DatastoreName/VMName/VMName.vmdk

Note: the command of inflation indicates the percentage of completion.

  • If the VMDK virtual disk is thick, convert the drive eager to zero thickness using the vmkfstools --eagerzero command. For example:

    vmkfstools --eagerzero /vmfs/volumes/DatastoreName/VMName/VMName.vmdk

Note: the avid zero order does not indicate the percentage of completion.

1. do I need to run the two commands?

2 will. that affect data on these discs?

Hello.

The disc is not thin provisioned (thinProvisioned = false), then the command ' vmkfstools - inflatedisk ' is not necessary.  Running the ' vmkfstools - eagerzero "command should not affect all data on the disk, but it is always a good idea to make sure that you have a backup before you run all disk commands.

Good luck!

    Hello

There is a bug in ESXi6.0 which causes stunning virtual machine during the extension of thick disk of eager.

As in below link, I tried to convert the disc zero lazy before its extension.

VMware KB: Expand a virtual disk eager-zero causes stun of the virtual machine in ESXi 6.0 GA / 6.0 U1

But even after svmotion with conversion from one disk to zero lazy, he showed thick zero in vCenter, web client and command line. I then extend a 50 GB to 100 GB drive, which causes my VM to stun.

Is there any other solution to extend a thick eager zero disk without causing a virtual machine for stunning in ESXi6?

It is confirmed with VMware that eager thick conversion of zero-for-zero lazy question in ESXi 6.0U1a and is resolved in the update 1 b.

The solution of the issue is:

    • Eager thick SVMotion zero disc to any other data store and change the type to thin over the svmotion.
    • Make sure the type is thin
    • Now extend a drive
    • Once again, svmotion the disc to the original and this data store times change the thick type zero eager

You will get the option to change the disc type in the settings advanced during the svmotion.

  • How can change the end of thick disk when a virtual machine has been placed on the disk?

After you have moved the virtual computer to another stage, chose the thin disk bad. Now, the virtual machine cannot start. the error message says that it must be thick for clustering. So, I need to change it back if possible. Then I moved it back and thick chosed. But, after that, I got a same error. So, after you move, the atatuse disk was not be changed. Is it a way not both directions? How can change the staus thin to thick?

    Thank you!

    George

    Hello George,.

You can also convert virtual disks in eagerzeroedthick from the command line.

vmkfstools-j VMname.vmdk allows to convert a thin disk in eagerzeroedthick

vmkfstools k VMname.vmdk that will do it on a thick disk

It can also work for a thin disk, click with the right button on the vmdk in browser data store, and then click 'inflate '.

  • Fusion: convert the disc more fixed disk size?

How can I convert a virtual disk of fixed size in a disc more?  My VM is only about 35 GB but my fixed disk, 75 GB, making backups very long and tedious. I wish that I had chosen a disc more when I used the converter, but I did not. And now I seem to be stuck with my choice. It's a Windows XP virtual machine.

Either way, I use my virtual machines inside a Sparsebundle - which makes it much more sympathetic to back up using Time Machine. Instead of trying every single time to 75 GB of backup, Time Machine backs up just slices the sparsebundle who changed - usually just a few gigabytes of data. There is a small performance hit when using virtual machines inside a sparsebundle (and it can be a significant performance hit if your VM is the heavy disk activity), but the benefits of having quickly backups Time Machine own outweighs the disadvantages, in my opinion.

Now if I could just convert my virtual disk in a disk "growing" instead of a fixed, there will be even less backup... ideas? It seems that VMware Workstation is a virtual disk manager application that would do exactly what I need, but I do not have a copy of the workstation.

    Thank you

    Kelly

I try to understand. To paraphrase:

1 VMware Fusion Virtual Machine--> settings-->--> States of HDDs for the single disk assigned to the size of the disk is 75 GB, Unchecked "Pre-allocate disk space" and Unchecked "divided into 2 GB files.

    2. Windows Disk Management says that you have a single disk with a single partition of size to 75 GB and more, only 35 GB of the partition is used.

3 OS X Finder said that the size of the beam of the virtual machine is more than 75 GB.

    4. under Windows, VMware Tools--> Shrink is called.

5 and later, the Finder OS X says that size is still more than 75 GB.

    Is the above correct?

  • Convert the Preallocated Growable disk

    Hello

On VMWare ESX 3.5, it is possible to convert the Growable pre-allocated disk?

    Thank you very much.

You'll have to do it from the console.

Basically, you'll copy the existing one and make the new thin.

The command is (or something like that)

    vmkfstools-i /vmfs/volumes/volumename/VMNAME/source.vmdk d thin d 2gbsparse /vmfs/volumes/volumename/VMNAME/destination.vmdk

Then, you will need to remove the old hard of the prompt and add the new.

My wife iPhoto library has about 9 500 photos. She has a MacBook Air, which has limited hard disk space, so we put his iPhoto library on a SD card (which is still in its SD slot). We decided to convert the iPhone photo library. When the process is started, it happens about 4% on the progress bar when a popup said that there is not enough disk space to perform the task (said to 72GO). How can I complete this process? She wants to ensure its iPhone and iPad Air can all share all the photos via iCloud. Can I put the library of Photos on the SD card too? Once the synchronization of library of Photos with iCloud, not all large digital images disappear from MacBook Air and only a miniature remain (like on the iPhone and the iPad)?

I decided to try the procedure on my original post on my MacBook Pro.

I copied the Library.photoslibrary Photos of my MBP to an external hard drive connected to my MBP.

I did an "Option" + then click on 'Photos' selected the "Library.photoslibrary Photos" on my external hard drive. This produces the following pop-up message:

"This library contains items to download from iCloud photo library".

"To download the complete library, delete the incomplete elements, then set this library as the library of the system preferences and activate iCloud photo library. This will disable iCloud photo library on other libraries. »

I clicked on "Quit" and posted above.

  • convert the disk basic dynamic - not an option

Hello. I found this article (314343 KB) and attempted to convert a dynamic volume to my hard drive so that I can extend so that it uses the unallocated space. I followed these instructions:

Convert a disk from basic to dynamic disk

Use the disk management snap-in in Windows XP to convert a disk from basic to dynamic disk. To do this, follow these steps:

    1. Sign in as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group.
    2. Click Startand then click Control Panel.
    3. Click performance and Maintenance, click Administrative Toolsand then double-clickcomputer management.
    4. In the left pane, click disk management.
    5. In the lower pane, right-click the basic disk that you want to convert, and then clickconvert to dynamic disk.

I'm stuck at this point, because when I right click on this drive, "convert" was not an option. Is there another way to do this without having to buy software? I tried to use Acronis Disk Director, but he won't do anything more than 100 MB with the trial version.

The computer is running XP Pro. Thank you.

You must be a right click on the partition. But you must click on the disc (a box before all the partitions on the disk with all the things written as disk 0 Basic etc.) make a right click on it and then click on convert to dynamic. either go to command prompt by running type cmd. Enter the following commands with each line ending with:

    DiskPart
    list disk
Select disk 0 (where disk 0 is your drive you want from the previous command)
    convert DYNAMIC
    output
    It will be useful.

You have FOUR partitions on the hard drive.

There is a system partition that is hidden on the front of the main road.

The problem with adding a partition, except for what you have already experienced, is that the use of the partition or recovery from recovery discs from the recovery partition would WIPE OUT any partition created by you, and all THE data on that partition.

If you are looking for a place to keep backups, get an external hard drive.

OEM machines are not set up for change. They are set up to make it easy for the user to restore the operating system in its entirety, drivers and support programs, in the case of a major accident.

  • How to decrease the size of the thick disk?

I'm trying to correct a mistake that I did a couple of years ago, when I created my first VMware ESXi 4 server. I have 2 virtual machines hosted on it, one of them is an Exchange server running on Windows 2008 R2, and the other is a Sonicwall virtual email security appliance.

Got 1.82 TB of disk space, so I made the largest possible data store I could and divided between 2 virtual machines (virtual appliance, Sonicwall got 82 GB and the Exchange Server has got everything). This leave me with 6.50 GB free.

I am currently evaluating the Trilead VM Explorer backup program and found that 6.5 GB is not enough free space, if I want to surely hot backups due to space taken snapshots.

It turned out that I was using only about 25% of the space allocated for the Exchange Server, so I shrunk the partition up to about 1 TB using the Windows 2008 R2 disk management tool.

However, I was able to find a way to reduce the same way the data store. Is there an easy way to do this? Since it hosts our Exchange Server, the minimum stopping time (if any) is important.

Although it may require downtime, I'd go with the V2V conversion, especially for a system with an application such as Exchange Server. As a side note, you can speed up the VMware Converter 5 significantly by disabling SSL (see http://kb.vmware.com/kb/2020517).

  • After Storage vMotion my VMDK is thin, even after the selection of thickness

    Hello

I'm looking to convert the thick disks via svMotion.  I try to avoid interruptions of service on the virtual machine.  We have no space to achieve the svmotion in another data store.  So I thought that I move it to local storage on the host and then again to the NAS.

I have svMotioned the virtual machine from a NAS device to the storage local to the host, verified size put into service and it was thick with success.

So, I then tried to bring him back to the NAS and selected thickness, and as soon as it was over the disc was thin again.

Why my storage vMotion finish and leave my discs to thin format?  Any ideas on what gives here?

Sorry if this has been answered elsewhere, I searched and have not found a lot of thickness.  Does not appear that many use this format in good standing.  We are a large company and do not actively monitor the use of the disc - we use the thick option to avoid any downtime due to space problems.

    Thanks for any idea!

The format of the virtual disk on a NAS storage is dictated by the NAS. Take a look at the configuration guide http://www.vmware.com/pdf/vsphere4/r40/vsp_40_esx_server_config.pdf (page 101)

  • Conversion of thick disks into thin, but not for any space back

    Hi all

We have been the conversion of the virtual disks from thick to thin over 30 servers using the method in offline mode, as we don't have storage vmotion:

    vmkfstools-i SERVERNAME.vmdk d thinSERVERNAME.vmdk thin

The virtual machine is a good mix of NT4 until 2008, vsphere 4.1 all patches installed until 01/05/11. Some we have been recovery of space well when comparing the original vmdk and sizes of vmdk converted file on the console with 'ls s' and 'Browse datastore' in the viclient, but others that we do not get something back into space?

Using Windows disk defrag to analyze the disks it shows there are no data at the end of the disc also surely the disc should shrink to where the last piece of data on the disk is?

What you have to do to thin to reclaim any unused space on the virtual FRONT thickness conversion machine drive?

Once that a disk block was written for her data even if the files have been deleted. You must use something like sdelete before use vmkfstools. Products like sdelete zero free space allowing you to reduce the disk.

  • Storage motioned to VM with thick disk thin disc?

Recently, we tried using SMotion to convert the current thick disk of our VM provisioning, but it won't expand the c:\ partition when we increase the size of the disk in the vSphere client. According to the official docs it is supported using SMotion so if anyone can help me I would be grateful.

No, just launch extpart on the virtual machine that you want to extend the volume on (after you have extended the volume in the settings of the virtual machine) from the command line and you will be asked to provide the letter of volume, then the size of developing.   If you have trouble with it I can do a screen cast for you in my environment if it would help.
