Corruption of USB memory stick

I have a key USB Verbatim that I use to synchronize files between a laptop running Vista Home Premium and your desktop under XP Professional SP3.

By 'synchronize', I mean just to run a batch file to copy files.  Nothing complicated.

Since upgrading my Vista laptop, I started to get the corruption of files on my USB key.  So far, this has happened twice.  I first noticed the corruption because it lacked (1) the files I copied on the memory stick, and Vista (2) began to complain when I plug in the USB key and offer to "scan and difficulty" it.  I ran chkdsk on the USB drive, which found errors.  CHKDSK said she 'removed the entries in the folder' and 'converted to strings lost files.  Running of chkdsk has not yet found any errors.  I've spent a lot of time to rebuild the data corrupted on my USB backup I had done elsewhere and has been subsequently upward and re-run.

Since I first corruption running chkdsk on a regular basis (even the time I plug the memory stick) and careful to always use surely "remove hardware" on both machines before unplugging the drive.  I was also careful not to let my laptop to sleep so that the USB plugged, but it shouldn't matter.

This morning, I noticed that corruption had resurfaced.  I've been running chkdsk often, I'm sure it's happened when the files to deal with USB stick on the Vista laptop this morning.

What is the guilty likily here?  It seems that it's the hardware of USB memory stick or a bug in Windows Vista?  A person offers advice such as how to limit?

DietCokeAddict,
Thank you for visiting the Microsoft Answers community forum.

Looks like you did a good job to limit the problem.  I would certainly continue to run chkdsk on the USB memory key and make remove them hardware safely shows before withdrawing.  There is an update for Vista that is specifically for USB devices that may solve your problem.  I had it set a number of different problems with USB devices.

Try this and let us know if it solves your problem:

When plugged in the first time, a driver loaded for her and then he saw in devices and printers, but not in the computer. I think that there is a compatibility problem between the USB and the USB key because the other key USB worked fine so I put t think that it s USB port or driver issue.

  • Windows 7 USB Memory stick found

    To the right,.

A few moments ago I provided an image my laptop using our Windows 7 image.  Previously I was using Windows XP.  Now that I have Windows 7, whenever I plug a USB key I do not get the noise that applies to connected equipment.  The device does not appear in Device Manager.  It's as if the computer will not even try to install the equipment.  I have a USB 2.0 VGA adapter and a DVD/RW from Sony reader connected, both plug-ins using USB and no problem with these devices.  Also have a keyboard and wireless mouse and the receiver attaches to the laptop via USB and no problem.  My NEC monitor has USB ports on the side and there is a USB cable that goes from the laptop screen and who operates the ports on the screen.  The computer does not find these USB ports.  Any thoughts?

    Thank you

    Hi John,.

As you mentioned in the post that other USB devices work correctly on your machine, I suggest you connect the memory stick to another machine and check if it works well.

    Please post back the results.

Because the USB works on the PC, appears not a hardware problem, but a kind of connection problem with Media Player.  Please repost your question to the Windows Media Player Discussion Group at: http://www.microsoft.com/communities/newsgroups/en-us/default.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.multimedia.windows.mediaplayer where experts in Media Player will be more than happy to help you with your problem.

  • No audio, cd/dvd devices does not work, can not update via Microsoft Update, usb memory sticks not recognized and much more

The initial problem was no audio sound on CD.  The computer had other system sounds.  I uninstalled the Realtek drivers and downloaded from the website computer and reinstalled.  Still the same problem. I tried to adjust the volume control and clicked the speaker at the bottom on the right bar.  I got a message saying there is no mixer device and the small speaker disappeared and reappeared even after several reboots.  There is also an error "no audio device".

After reboot, the computer gives this error message: "Generic Host process for Win32 Services has encountered a problem and needs to close." We are sorry for the inconvenience. »

While trying to find a solution on the web, I discovered that the computer does not recognize the usb key,
It won't restore to an earlier time,
the CD/DVD drive will not run the data disks

and Windows Update will not update.  The error message said: "the site has encountered a problem and cannot display the page you are trying to show."  There is an error number: 0x800706BE I tried to find this error message on the MS knowledge base, but it is not listed.

The last Windows Update was on April 16, 2009 so I tried to restore to April 15, but it says 'system restore is not able to protect your computer.  Restart your computer and restart System Restore. "    After the reboot, the same thing happens.

    Any help is appreciated.

The data is not "hostage." Pull the disk and put it in a box disc or it slave to a working computer and retrieve the data. If you don't have an additional computer you will need to borrow a friend or with the machine at a tech. You can also try the o with a Linux Live CD boot. I like Knoppix, but there are others. This has two advantages: 1) if the system works, you can back up all the data that missed your last backup; and (2) with the machine running Linux allows to determine whether the problems are caused by software or hardware. If the machine is unbearably slow and/or Linux cannot run correctly, you know that the hardware is at fault. If the machine behaves perfectly under Linux, you know that the software (Windows) is at fault.

Whatever you do, do not install Windows without test material. If the hardware is at fault, software solutions like reinstalling Windows will be unnecessary. MS - MVP - Elephant Boy computers - don't panic!

  • How to fix a corrupt Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo

Hello, I have a problem with my Memory Stick. I'm sure that it's corrupt, because I get the usual "No. Memory Stick detected" messages.

The problem here is that I need to know how to solve this problem by using Windows. I have a memory stick reader that I consider using a USB port and whenever I try to open the location, the computer either locks up until I have remove the stick, or he says no disc inserted in the drive. Once, I managed to get my other computer to say "Device must be formatted before use", but after clicking the format, he said that couldn't be. It seems that Windows just hate my Memory Stick but I really want to solve this problem.

If someone think of an answer, please answer. I'll give you more information if necessary.

Insert the disc, but do not attempt to access or open.  Go to start / Control Panel / administrative tools / computer management / disk management.  The disc appear?  If Yes, go to the disc and try to format it using disk management features (I guess since you've already tried to format that it contains no data to record).  If it does not, there is probably a problem with the memory stick (or the USB port - try another port) as only corruption would not prevent from being recognized as valid a drive.

    Let us know what happens.

    I hope this helps.

    Good luck!

If you have access to another computer test plug this memory stick to another computer and check if it works.

  • Satellite R20 - Memory Stick PRO Duo problem

I looked and saw a lot of similar posts from users with a similar problem. Unfortunately, most of the answers suggested by looking at the user manual and taking note that the phone does not support the Memory Stick PRO Duo. Technically, that's true. However, many Sony cameras come with an adapter that turns the PRO Duo stick a Memory Stick PRO. These include very well in Flash Media Bridge adapter. The manual also indicates that the drive supports this stick.

What's weird, is that Windows Vista recognizes the insertion of the memory stick, but he then told me that I need to format it before so I can use it. I don't remember what I used the term, but there was a time eventually (with an older driver and/or the installation of XP?) when I could operate using a tip of reboot or something. No, however, I get boor. The stick (and its adapter) work very well. I can read it using another USB adapter. (Connected to my dell monitor 24 "... so not exactly a portable solution)

My laptop is the Satellite R20 Tablet and my OS is Vista Business

Thanks in advance for your help.
